  • Let's Dance is the fifteenth studio album by David Bowie, released in 1983, with co-production by Chic's Nile Rodgers. The title track of the album became one of Bowie's biggest hit singles, reaching No. 1 in the UK, US and various other countries. Further singles included "Modern Love" and "China Girl", which both reached No. 2 in the UK. "China Girl" was a new version of a song which Bowie had co-written with Iggy Pop for the latter's 1977 album The Idiot. The album also contains a rerecorded version of the song "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" which had been a minor hit for Bowie a year earlier. Let's Dance is also notable as a stepping stone for the career of the Texas blues guitar virtuoso Stevie Ray Vaughan, who played on it.[1] The album was also released as a limited edition picture disc in 1983. Let's Dance has sold at least 7 million copies worldwide, making it Bowie's best-selling album.[4]
The success of the album surprised Bowie, who felt he had to continue to pander to the new pop audience he acquired with the album. This led to Bowie releasing two further solo albums in 1984 and 1987 that, despite their relative commercial success, did not sell as well as Let's Dance, were poorly received by critics at the time and subsequently dismissed by Bowie himself as his "Phil Collins years".[5] Bowie would form the hard rock and grunge-predecessor band Tin Machine in 1989 in an effort to rejuvenate himself artistically.

Still fresh and so brilliant after 40 years, Iggy Pop cover, the difficult passage from the so freaky style of Ziggy Stardust to the 80s commercialization. Only Bowie could do that, missin so much this charismatic genius

The bass and guitar on this song follow each other and the beat so well, anytime I hear them it’s so distinct and satisfying... it’s hard to think of another song with quite this kind of sound...

That was the work of Carmine Rojas, who was with Bowie's band at the time, and Chic's Tony Thompson.
Chic's Nile Rodgers produced this album and played rhythm guitar on it. You will also find his (and Thompson's) imprints all over Madonna's "Like a Virgin" album.

The hard and motoric quality of the bass and drums (they're fairly high up in the mix and never budge for the vocals) sort of suggests the feel of inevitability or captivity around the lovers in the song: they are not really in control of what's happening to them but trapped by powerful forces (and this is also suggested by the images in the video). Dark passion...

David Bowie has such a unique sound. What was most amazing was his ability to proficiently sing a blues song, "It's Gonna Be Me", blew my socks off! He wrote a lot of his own music, wrote the songs in Jim Henson's 'Labrinyth'' movie, and sings with that distinct tone. Bowie sure was a talented dude.

My favourite Bowie album. Ballsy and brilliant, one superb track after another. This was drum and bass before drum and bass. Right at the top of his game here, off the drugs and looking great. Gone too soon

    Little China girl
    Little China girl
I could escape this feeling with my China girl
I feel a wreck without my little China girl
I hear her heart beating loud as thunder
    Saw the stars crashing
I'm a mess without my little China girl
Wake up in the morning, where's my little China girl
I hear her heart's beating loud as thunder
I saw the stars crashing down
I feel tragic like I'm Marlon Brando
When I look at my China girl
I could pretend nothing really meant too much
When I look at my China girl
    I stumble into town
    Just like a sacred cow
Visions of swastikas in my head
    Plans for everyone
It's in the white of my eyes
    My little China girl
    You shouldn't mess with me
    I'll ruin everything you are
    You know it
    I'll give you television
I'll give you eyes of blue
I'll give you a man who wants to rule the world
    And when I get excited
    My little China girl says,
"Oh baby just you shut your mouth."
    She says, "Sh."
    She says, "Sh."
    She says
    She says
    And when I get excited
    My little China girl says,
"Oh baby just you shut your mouth."
    And when I get excited
    My little China girl says,
"Oh baby just you shut your mouth."
    She says, "Sh."

I miss Tony Thompson's drum grooves man. This song is nothing without that sweet groove of his. Tony was really hot in the early 80's, (some would even say they liked it that way 😜).

    • @louise_rose
      @louise_rose Рік тому

I think he did much the same kind of skips, cracks and soulful slides with his voice in Young Americans, almost a decade earlier. I agree this is an amazing recording, even if at first sight it could sound straightforward and "simple".
