- The debate over whether West Virginia University (WVU) should join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) encompasses various dimensions, including financial stability, athletic competitiveness, geographic fit, and academic alignment. While there are compelling arguments on both sides, a move to the ACC could offer significant benefits for WVU.
Financial Stability
One of the primary advantages of joining the ACC is financial stability. The ACC's media rights deal, while not as lucrative as the Big Ten or SEC, still offers considerable revenue. This financial boost could enhance WVU’s athletic programs, facilities, and overall university budget. The ACC's stable financial environment might be more secure compared to the current volatility and uncertainties within the Big 12, providing WVU with a more predictable and sustainable economic model.
Athletic Competitiveness
Athletically, WVU has a storied history, particularly in football and basketball. Joining the ACC would align WVU with schools that have similar competitive traditions. The ACC's emphasis on basketball fits well with WVU's strong basketball program, and the football program would benefit from playing against historically competitive teams like Clemson, Florida State, and Miami. This increased level of competition could enhance the national profile of WVU’s athletic programs.
Geographic Fit
Geographically, WVU's location makes it a natural fit for the ACC. The travel demands for both athletes and fans would be reduced compared to the Big 12, which has teams spread across the central United States. Proximity to ACC schools would facilitate more regional rivalries and increase fan engagement. Games against nearby ACC teams would likely draw larger crowds and boost local interest and rivalries, which are crucial for building a vibrant athletic culture.
Academic Alignment
Academically, the ACC is known for its emphasis on balancing athletics with academic excellence. WVU could benefit from aligning with institutions that prioritize both. The ACC’s academic consortium could provide collaborative opportunities for research and academic programs, enhancing WVU’s educational mission.
Conclusion
In conclusion, West Virginia's potential move to the ACC offers numerous advantages, including financial stability, enhanced athletic competition, geographic alignment, and academic collaboration. While the Big 12 has provided a strong platform, the ACC could offer a more holistic and sustainable future for WVU. The decision would need to consider the long-term strategic goals of the university, balancing tradition with the opportunities presented by the ACC.

In my lifetime we have been undefeated twice and played for 2 national championships. 1988, and 1993. Plus was 1 bad game away from playing again in 2008. Are we that forgotten about?? No one remembers orange bowl win against clemson, fiesta bowl win agains oklahoma, sugar bowl win against georgia? All in a 4 year period. Yes i agree, we r not always dominate or even close too blue blood staus. But we r a great program that competes way better than most teams that have so much more in location, resources, etc... Give us some props please.
WV fans seem crazy passionate and I’m here for it. Go Utes!
Let’s goooo mountaineers!!!!!!!!!
back at you brother. welcome to the conference and hopefully we will see you for the first time in the Big 12 Championship
West By God Virginia ❤
BYU fan here, I am glad we are in the same conference as West Virginia, a great state and the home for some of my dearest friends.
WV had a big crowd at UCF last year. UCF in the same boat as WV with long travel. Is what it is.
ALSO . . . many WVU fans hope with Pat McAfee on College Day folks will start showing more love for WVU. Pat is the quintessential Mountaineer for sure. -- AND Let's not forget Nick Saban, a proud West Virginia and one of many great coaches who hail from the mountain state, joining the show. West "By God" Virginia seems to be well represented in 2024 and beyond. Thanks For all you do Drake. Good Stuff!
How come when you talk about wvu all you do is talk about how horrible of a job is all this other stuff yet when you invite anybody else it’s a 10-15 minute glaze fest
I don't really understand the narrative, WVU plays teams that are hours away... that's just what it is. Nothing wrong with that. The schedule has been fair given the circumstances. And btw, UCF come to WV this year...pretty sure UCF, UC and WVU will prob play every year. This was not a great take. Creating something out of nothing.
We always show up!....it's funny watching your younger generation talking about West By God, you don't even know about West Virginia's best years.
With all do respect do some research 😉
I feel lucky to be able to go down the road to watch WVU play in Cincinnati this year. Let's go Mountaineers!
As I type this, Morgantown to UCF is a 13 hour and 49 minute drive, barely seeing any coast along the way. I’m assuming it would take MUCH longer to take the scenic “just a drive down the coast route”
WV problem is that they’re way up in a corner of the country where there’s just not a whole lot of homegrown talent with lack of schools that would either want to join the B12…or are capable of joining the B12
Well we play ufc at home this year but none the less I get your point .
National conferences will have big travel but next round needs to get some teams out east
If Big 12 doesn’t get ACC schools, West Virginia would be a nice pick up for the SEC.
Although WVU is 75 miles from Pittsburgh, West Virginia University is "kind of" their pro football team. There are THE football program for most WV fans. That is, to a large extent, the reason WVU fans are so passionate.,
West Virginia is gonna turn some heads this season
As a Native WV and huge WVU fan, we have always been screwed over. We can legit put down the haters but will never receive respect.
West Virginia ... YOU HAVE TO PROVE WORTH EVERY SINGLE DAY !!! ... The TRUE underdog !! Blue collar redneck !! I'm a native and had to prove myself every single day I lived out of state. The ignorant sh#t I dealt with was unbelievable!!
lol the SWAC is a conference of HBCU’s, not the Southwest Conference
A whole lota nothing said here
Big 12 conference makes no sense hahahaha 😂😂😂
BYU fan with WVU ties here. Mad respect for that program. Also, I love that logo.
Being out on an island isn’t ideal, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that that WVU opted for the prestige of the Big 12 over the more convenient geography of the AAC when the Big East collapsed. BYU and other schools wanted that spot too, and BYU would be on an island now if it hadn’t been for the PAC 12 collapse.
The conference is going to add whoever is best for the league, not an individual school. Maybe that’s a Pitt/Louisville/VT combo. Maybe it’s OSU/WSU or Syracuse that exacerbates the geography challenge. TV execs kind of drive that. Whatever happens, WVU should not see membership as a slight-it’s a privilege.
Imagine if WVU had been left to the AAC and just now joined. The perception would be very different.
Most WVU fans understand that and don’t make as big of a deal about it as the media does.
@@jspat1975 if every fanbase were judged by its worst moments…BYU can be pretty embarrassing at times. Proud alumni though.
@@aBrewster29 I hear ya, 5% make 95% look bad.
West By God Virginia gonna win the water down Big 12.
West Virginia would be a much better fit for the ACC. They could play their natural rivals every year and not have to travel as far.
Not in a dying ACC!
Yeah maybe 15 years ago!!!
maybe you havent kept up on current events, but that ship has sailed.
@petewilcox3354 bless your heart little guy...
You really don't know much about college football lol
History and tradition always Win out😂
Don't believe me? .....Hold my beer 🍺
Maybe a little homework might leave you better prepared for your next comment 😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂
@Jbob37 No, bless your heart ole buddy. Once the top tier of the ACC leave, WVU Is not going to leave a conference that is completely bought in on football to go to the leftover ACC rebuild. Our new media deal starting in 2025-2026 is going to be 50m per school. The ACC didn't want us back then, we won't help save you now when the ship sinks. WVU fans love the culture and atmospheres in the Big 12, we could care less about the ACC.
Neal brown better have 8 wins or his butt is gone...
They have 0 reason to talk… UCF takes 12 hours minimum to travel to a game. Either way, we both need the big 12 to expand east
The difference is WVU has been doing it for over a decade, UCF has done it for one year so far. I do agree though if we expand, it needs to be east.
Then leave the Big 12, if you don’t like it.
ACC does not want WVU. If they did they would be in the conference by now. NB success? Where? One season with an easy schedule, did not beat a team with a winning record and won a bowl game where the best players at UNC did not play. Maybe in WV that is considered success by most look at his record at WVU that said he should have been fired long ago. However, when being mediocre is the goal WV is happy along with some of the fans.
ACC is a dying conference. you been living under a rock?
As far as the UNC game goes, you can rationalize them losing however you need to. whatever gets you a good nights sleep. last I checked there is no asterisk for that win in the record books. copium is real bud.
Bless your heart...you must be a youngin😂🤣😂
Let me guess 🤔
You were born in the late 90's early 2000's🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Your lack of college football history is telling and funny 😉
@petewilcox3354 I'm obviously responding to another college football youngin...
Bless your heart little feller😂
The majority of the ACC has been absolutely horrible for years..
Do just a little homework ...I Promise, even you can figure this out little guy.
Google is your friend 😂🤣😂
WV > ACC. We beat pitt, vt, unc, last time we played clemson we scored 70. Acc is a cupcake leage that has a bunch of bad teams. The worst big 12 can beat the 3rd best acc team. It is what it is. WVU is also the 15th winningist program in history. 1 of 3 schools in the country whose basketball and football are in top 23 in all-time wins. That is far from mediocre.
What are the alternatives? The ACC is about to implode. The BIG 10 (aka Big 18) is geographically better, and maybe $$ better, but they are even considered by the BIG 10.
