The DUMBEST CONTROVERSY of Hideo Nomo's CAREER
Вставка

- In 1995, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hideo Nomo took the United States and Japan by storm with his incredible rookie season in Major League Baseball. However, in the middle of 1995, he was involved in an absolutely bizarre controversy following a game against the Florida Marlins with the radio station WQAM. As for the controversy itself? It caused a ton of uproar and backlash, to say the least.

Two strongly hitter-friendly parks, which have been around for decades, have each had only one no-hitter thrown in their respective histories: Coors Field in Colorado and Camden Yards in Baltimore. Hideo Nomo was the author of both of those gems.
I remember seeing him coming out of relief for the Royals bullpen in 2008 and it just felt like the most random thing about his entire career
He was still playing in 2008? Man that is random.
@@dicloniusgames Yeah this video here way back from April 2008 of a fan recording Nomo’s pregame bullpen session, before what would end up being the final game of his career is the only known footage that this ever happened lol

And when you consider the fact he have not pitched yet all in the major leagues since 2005, that makes it even more unbelievable. And he was 39 years old.
For some reason I thought he pitched out of the pen for the 2010 Pittsburgh Pirates. Turns out that was Chan Ho Park.
@@crowtservo Wasn't he on the Dodgers too around the same time as Nomo or at least playing around that time? Chan Ho Park rings a bell.
He was the 4th of 5 Dodgers in a row to win NL Rookie of the Year, a record.
1992 Eric Karross
1993 Mike Piazza
1994 Raul Mondesi
1995 Hideo Nomo
1996 Todd Hollandsworth
They broke their own previous record with four from 1979-82.
Still have my commemorative poster from a game I went to in '97
The Dodgers should have sued WQAM or threatened to. If I were that guy from the Dodgers I would have said to that radio station "NO you either you issue your apology now or we will take you to court for slander and defamation.
When you said it was a station in Miami, I thought it was going to be about having an interpreter for the wrong language by being interviewed by a Spanish language station.
I was half expecting having the wrong interpreter for a radio station up in Montreal at first, TBH... but WOW... this is much much worse.
The Tigers signed him in 2000, the first season at Comerica Park. He wasn't as dominant as he once was, but he was still fun to watch.
As a kid in New York City, I quickly learned from the sports pages to take everything the media says with a grain of salt. Or a handful.
Remember how big Nomomania was reminded me of FernandoMania and much like Fernando Hideo Nomo was light out saw him pitch a few time at Dodger Stadium
I thought the same thing but some fan older than me insisted that Nomo-mania was nowhere close to Fernando-mania. Unless they were being very specific about Chavez Ravine and the Mexican community I don't see a difference.
@mysterious2ndguy Both were big in thier own era. Fernandomania was so big in Mexico that every time that Fernando Valenzuela pitch Televisa would televised the game albeit tape delay
One thing I like about you is that you say "MLB", not "the MLB", which makes no sense.
He said the MLB I think you missed it. Pfft
Hello. Future baseball fan and Dodger watcher here. You thought this story was wild? Wait until you hear the one about Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter...
The shaggy reference was awesome
ua-cam.com/video/sxKDnyzOsd8/v-deo.html Actually, Nomo was the 4th Dodgers ROY in a row. Eric Karros won the award in 1992.
Thanks for all the footage of the tornado windup. I remember seeing that at the all star game that year and I mimicked it for a couple days as an eight year old.
Speaking of tornadoes there was a Tornado in LA County Montebello California an it was EF 1.
Some pranks are funny, but this wasn't one of them. They should have said right away instead of having people think he was mean & nasty. They probably did ruin his reputation.
I remember that story on XTRA 690 I just laughed cause everyone can see Nomo is a fan favorite
My favorite pitcher Nomo
Ha. I remember this. I watched that game and heard that interview.
WQAM use to be the number 1 station.
Then 790 was created and every big name in talk radio signed with them and well WQAM has been trying for years to regain their spot. They still sit at number 2 (940 is new and challenging)
Only in Florida 😆
"they would not know sushi from a slider" is a great line anyway, lol

It’s a baseball history channel….
Friggin love that wind up. I wish guys these days had cool wind ups like that.
This is a pretty classless way to try and get a laugh...Aside from the general lameness of making fun of someone's language barrier, I imagine that Nomo was likely feeling a lot of pressure to be measured in his comments and a to be a good representation of his country and people to an audience that didn't have a lot of experience or knowledge of Japanese baseball at the time. Hell, this wasn't that long after the 1980s when there was a pretty strong current of resentment towards Japan and Japanese companies due to their booming economy and expansions into corporate America. Which is to say, he was likely pretty self-conscious about the stuff he did say, and it's pretty awful that he had to worry about stuff he never said on top of it. Anyway, Nomo-mania was absolutely awesome for baseball and a huge deal, and as a jealous Giants fan, I hated every bit of it. OK, not really, he was tremendously exciting to watch.
A bit off-topic, but Roberto Clemente used to speak to reporters in broken English with a heavy Spanish accent. So the racist print journalists of the day quoted him phonetically to make him sound like an idiot. No wonder foreign-born players such as Nomo would be reluctant to address the public in a language they're not comfortable speaking.
@@brientaylorcohen 💯 exactly why Ohtani gives two sh#ts about speaking to the media
Marlins Fans don’t leave the game early… they never show up to begin with. That’s when we knew it was a hoax.
Hideo Nomo was great as a rookie, but the rest of his career he was just a journeyman. A little above .500 winning percentage. And a 4.24 ERA which is OK I guess.
The era he pitched in had the highest average H/9in and HR/9in. He was pretty good. It does make what Maddox did that much more incredible
First!
Btw JG7, ur actually wrong, Nomo isnt the first japanese baseball player, he is technically the 2nd. Masanori Murakami in the 1964 was the first, he played 1 season for the giants.
How did he do?
It was just a prank, bro! :P
I loved this
Guy. Florida will always be second class.
