- Conroe is a daytrip full of all kinds of things - from exhilarating water fun to significant Texas history. Whether you’re looking to roam a lakefront playground, enjoy a getaway to the Piney Woods of East Texas or learn about the beginnings of the Lone Star Flag, Conroe is the place for you!
Contrary to the what you may have learned from a certain amusement park, Texas had more than six flags before it settled on the Lone Star flag, and the Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park is the perfect place to learn about all the flags in our history. This park features all 12 flags before Dr. Charles B. Stewart of Montgomery finally created the Lone Star Flag in 1839.
For a history of Montgomery County, head to the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County in the 1924 Grogan/Cochran home. Learn more about famous Montgomery resident Dr. Charles B. Stewart who created the Lone Star flag and served as the first Secretary of State to the Republic of Texas, and try on period pioneer clothing in the Children’s Room.
Visit the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary that rescues wolves in Montgomery. You can learn all about these majestic creatures and even meet a few of them!
Unfortunately, Conroe’s biggest attraction is the lake and an awesome way to explore it, has permanently closed since we filmed this episode.
Hydro Rockets extreme water sport has also closed since we filmed this episode.
In Historic Downtown, you’ll find the Red Brick Tavern that serves food just as legendary as the musicians that rock its stage. They specialize in revamping old favorites like BBQ Meatloaf topped with Yukon Potatoes and Pistachio Crusted Pork Chops, as well as delicious new creations like Pulled Pork Nachos and Bacon Fried Oysters.
If a day on the lake makes you crave fish, no need to hop in a boat and cast a line, head to Kuntry Katfish for the best fried catfish around. For 30 years the Vernon family has been serving up fried Southern fare and fish just like mama used to. Start with fried green tomatoes, and end with crispy fried catfish, frog legs and shrimp for one fantastic fried feast!

I am the current Flagmaster for The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park, thank you for sharing the amazing Flag Park for everyone to see. For everyone else, come on by and see and learn our incredible Republic of Texas history.
Super cool park. Love it.
In TX history they taught us how to remember how to fly the flag. "Blood runs down", to remind u that the red is on bottom.
I’ve lived in Conroe Texas since 1977. All of my grandchildren were born here. I really enjoyed the video. I didn’t know there were things in there that you brought out like the wolf farm and the story the flags. Thank you very much for visiting our little big town.
Wolf farm was in Magnolia, I thought he said.
Great video! loved all the coverage on Vernons Kuntry Katfish!
Thanks for what you do, it keeps me smiling and Texas in my heart. It takes me back to my youth and I remember so many of the places you visit. Born and raised Howard county . Hi from Montana
Conroe, Texas is where my ex resides and i avoid like the plague!
LOL…😆👍I have a few of those places on the map, but Conroe ain't one of ‘em…
buwahahahahahah
Thanks for coming over!
I was born and raised in Conroe for half of my life, I loved it there and miss it ao much. It was a great place and all around it has been expanding a lot in the last few years
You’ll be glad to know how much it’s growing and improving
@Spacecadet0720 my family's in Montgomery County and just going down to visit recently for a funeral theirs stop lights all down the street leading to their house and several subdivisions going in. I'm glad it's finally getting some love
Candy Cane Park is fantastic. As well as their Parks and Rec team for having a city sponsored youth swim and dive teams. Go Rattlesnakes!
You have to go up to the north end of Lake Conroe for the natural experience. Cagel National Park is my preferred launch
Rewatching the video 😂 i love seeing my home town. I rememver going to that museaum and having ao much fun on the hands on part
I love Vernon's. They do a good job at cateering also. Was so glad to see it made it through the lockdowns.
The fact anyone in Tx obeyed lockdowns breaks my freedom loving heart
❤❤❤ my Mom and Brother and his family lives there
this feels so surreal to finally see my town getting recognition. we truly are just seen as a pass through town loll. we do offer some cool things if you have a good community!!
Yup, I ate at both those places, and you can't go wrong with either. Great edit.
I've been to Red Brick Tavern, it was really good. I have never thought about going to Vernon's but I am looking forward to it now
Good to see the Houston area with a catfish place worth trying. My next time in Conroe, I've got to give Vernon's a try. That shrimp looked huge!
Yup live here in Conroe and it does have its bonuses
Lived in Conroe for several years & Vernon’s Catfish had the best burgers & fries!! Yum!
Downtown Conroe and South congress in austin are the 2 coolest places in Texas
Served at the Army Reserve unit over at the airport for 8 years. Passed by Vernon's many times and didn't know much about it. Now I will have to go.
L👀ks like soooo much fun‼️ 🙋♀️💖🇨🇱
I am born and raised in Conroe Texas. 😊❤
Im 73 born and raised in Montgomery county
Yes Paul and i went here and paul threw up in the car after having spicy Mexican food 😂
I never new there was a wolf sanctuary there.
It's actually really cool. My kids love to go and watch them howl.
Neither did I, that would be something fun to take my younger cousins to
Knew
My grandma and grandpa used to live in Conroe
Day trippin in Cornroe
I live between Spring & Conroe on 99, and you’ve set forth some great knowledge on me 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
You didn't mention the largest inland water boat in Texas is on lake Conroe named the Southern Empress Sternwheeler 1880s replica paddlewheel
Vernons has been open for a lot longer than 30 years.
COOL
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The birthplace of the flag is Montgomery
The wolf sanctuary is in Macgomery also
Dr. Stewart actually lived closer to Conroe BUT who's counting, we love him for creating our BEAUTIFUL Lone Star Flag! GOD bless Dr. Stewart and GOD Bless The Republic of Texas!
That was old Vernon's lol!
You need to come back to Conroe there’s three more places you need to visit a place called dragon bowl c kofe num pang and a winery called b&e it was originally opened up by three retired Conroe police officers and one of the officers still owns it the other two went off to do their own things one of them went off to be security for nasa
RIP Buster Bowers what a good dude
Conroe isn't the birthplace of our flag, that would be Montgomery.
I was thinking the same thing. And the wolf sanctuary is in Montgomery
Montgomery county is the birthplace of our flag. Encanto is the capital.
Dr. Stewart actually lived closer to Conroe BUT who's counting, we love him for creating our BEAUTIFUL Lone Star Flag! GOD bless Dr. Stewart and GOD Bless The Republic of Texas!
@toddhomman2569 fair enough, it's like telling someone from Dallas the cowboys actually play in Arlington.
@@conordugan3305 LOL so very true!
Try Vernons Bar B Que. MUCH better that Vernon's Catfish and seafood, IMO. McKenzies Bar B Que and Joes Italian on Frazier are great also.
Joe's Italian has great Alfredo and their pizzas are great. Not their actual entrees though. Very bland.
Shouts out to Vernon's!!
What's with the dude in the photo stand-in? LOL 5:55
Lol that's a lil creepy
Kuntry Katfish is awesome...
VERNONS CATFISH, USED to be the best, when the dad was around with its nice portion sizes, thick fillets, now: its super thin filets, like fried fish jerky & very small portions😢
Vernons used to cater to the veterans at the every Wednesday meetings in Conroe & we ALWAYS had to go somewhere else afterwards to eat.
The place you "should" showcase if back in the area is: Magnolia Diner in old magnolia on FM 1488.
The best huge fresh catfish thick fillets, with all the trimmings! They did have Fridays nights ALL you can eat catfish but it was sooooo popular i think they saw people could really put their catfish away. When you order the 3 piece catfish dinner, at first you think thats not enough fish, but wait till you see how big they are.
This episode filming was done 7 years ago?
Yep. We've been on PBS for 15 years. So all of this is our old content from television. But it seems like most folks aren't watching TV anymore. Including you. So here you go.
I want fried catfish now. I hate you. Go visit Kb's BBQ in Victoria . The have some of the best food.
Check out the breweries
B-52 is legit.
Sadly Conroe is a split city, depends on what side of the highway your on.
Mythology 101
No!!! Conroe is NOT the birthplace of the Texas flag. Montgomery, just 15 minutes west of Conroe is.
Maybe 15 minutes with no traffic on 105.
Conroe tx is where I was born but as of late it’s been getting awfully ghettoish
How old is this Busters been dead a few years
2017 IIRC
conroe is not the birthplace of the texas flag, montgomery is, not far from conroe 👍🏻
