    What a lovely little car. I am lucky enough to have a standard N12 Pulsar hatch down in Australia, identical mechanically & a real good thing to drive for the class of car it is from that era. A good friend of mine has the KN12 Exa coupe with the E15ET - now that is a rapid motor! Surprises even a lot of modern cars.

    Typical Period Nissan interior!
    ASC did a lot of conversions, first, sunroofs, then convertibles, for US vehicles.
    I think the next Pulsar NX got a squareback hatch; you could have a coupé like hatch or a squareback that makes it look like an estate! An AM radio!
    Haven't seen a Pulsar NX in decades!

    That 0-60 spec is undoubtedly in KPH. I had a Sentra with that engine and 0-60 was around 15 seconds. 😊

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 3 роки тому

      For 0-60 kph it is too slow, it really could be mph, if it uses the veeery "best case scenario" time. There are a lot of fanciful ways to test, or even calculate 0-60 times to get the results you want. As was popular back in the day.
      Sidenote: Did you know that the stated "dry weight" of a japanese motorcycle is without gas... coolant.. fork oil.. and even battery? Yes, it is true. Lies, statistics and all that.

    • @Rico_G
      @Rico_G 3 роки тому +1

      @@GoldenCroc Perhaps if it was dropped off of a building it would hit 60 in under 9 seconds. The spec actually matches well with 0-50mph which was commonly stated for cars with an unimpressive 0-60 time.

    I'd heard that these existed but never actually seen one. So odd! I had an 85 Pulsar NX and that was easily one of the coolest cars I've ever owned. And I owned two 280Zs. It's a shame cars like the NX/EXA don't get built anymore. I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat. A fwd go-kart that looks cool and is excellent on petrol. Ugh. Why do we not have a modern version of these today?

    Very interesting video of a very rare car. The time frame for the Japanese tax law is 5 years. That is why there is a solid trade in used parts from Japan. When you think about it, the whole idea of cars being scrapped as routine after only 5 years of service is downright terrible for the environment! Great to see this rare beast so well cared for.

    I'm guessing that Nissan were planning to enter the lucrative market for convertibles that was reopening in North America in the eighties, and for some motive abandoned this model in the early production phase.
    It would be explained by a remarkably harsh road test that Car and Driver published in 1983-84, where they acquired the Turbo model, and discovered that the turbo lag and tall gearing made acceleration slower than the carburettor model. Car and Driver suggested that the acceleration was so slow as to be hazardous in traffic.

    As memory serves, this period of Nissan special vehicles also included an, as memory serves lift back, coupe that could convert into a pickup by removing and changing some of the plastic panels. It sounds a bit of a crazy idea, but the actual vehicle really looked quite neat, especially when you consider it was, if I remember correctly, a Japanese market vehicle only from a period when those vehicles could have decidedly challenging styling...
    That steering wheel is exactly the same one as was used on the Nissan Cherry Turbo in the UK, though for that model it didn't have the leather rim, just a soft-feel plastic item, so the leather steering wheel rim and horn push for these cars was probably another item unique to this car as a leather steering wheel rim was not something commonly seen on Japanese vehicles until well into the 1990s due to Japanese attitudes to things being rather different to ours and leather being viewed as not being luxurious as it is here but just rather unpleasant in the Japanese summer heat with very plush velour being very much the interior trim of choice in the really posh Japanese market vehicles like the Toyota Century...

    From what I understand it was actually cheaper for companies to have their convertibles done by a different company. Probably why Ford had all the Mustang convertibles from that era done that way.

    When one thinks about it prior to the Lotus Elan inspired Mazda MX5. Nissan was actually the best candidate for reviving the small British influenced RWD sportscar and they were actually a company with some history ties to Austin/BMC too (that produced the Midget/Sprite) with even a number of Nissan's engines (including the E in the EXA) sharing some characteristics with the BMC A-Series engine. A shame really the EXA was not front engined RWD, the closest Nissan thought of a small RWD sportscar after the 1960s was the mid-engined 1975 Nissan AD-1 concept based on the F10 Cherry and powered by a Nissan A14 engine.

    • @furiousdriving

      Specs wise, there's also the S13 cars from the late 80s (240sx in the States) and I believe there was a short run of convertibles. But most were the usual 2+2 coupes and hatches.

    • @wickiezulu
      @wickiezulu 3 роки тому

      The general Silvia models would be too big to be considered a direct MX5 rival, that is not to say Nissan couldn't have developed a shortened S-platform (a version of which allegedly underpinned the RWD Sunnys up to the early-80s with the B310) to spawn a small MX5-rivalling Nissan A/E/CA/SR-powered 2-seater sportscar below the Silvia.
      It would be similar to how the first two 1989-2005 MX5 models were said to have been derived from the 1978-1992 1st/2nd gen RX7. One left-field example in terms of size and concept (if not execution) would have to be the CA18ET powered 1984-1995 Reliant Scimitar SS1/Scimitar SST/Scimitar Sabre.

    Matt, this thing has a lot of "not matching" colours like the plastic interior trim and the carpets. It's a kit car! And rare kit cars are still kit cars. This re-painted thing is horrid! But I will agree with you that it's better in white; but alas, it would be more better in a wood chipper. How many points out of ten did Mrs. Furious give it I wonder? What about her hair dresser? Surely Alfonso thought it a nippy little number. LOL
