Certianly corn starch as that is the main ingredient in baby powder these days after ditching the talc. Wouldn't surprised if baking soda didn't work too, although it might be a bit abrassive.
I was just going to say the same thing and you wouldn't have the scent of baby powder on the tarp if you were trying to be stealthy. I don't think corn starch has that much of a scent compared to baby powder.
Hmmm...didn't know that. Hope that corn ain't GMO. Wonder if they have to label it as such if it is?
I commissioned a lady to make one of these Marpat Tarps to my specs with highest quality fabric. It's perfect, but I only set it up once. It is designed with catenary cut to keep it from flapping in the wind. It has a grosgrain perimeter with grosgrain loop tie outs instead of grommets. The coated underside is a drab brown I don't use it though I really like the way it turned out. It's absolutely perfect for woodland.
Any interest in selling it?
what has that got to do with the present topic ?
@@skipper9400 Skipper, I'm right on point.
I love this topic and the premium MARPAT tarp fabric. Mine doesn't stick like that, probably because it is factory new and has been stored in a dry climate controlled location since the one initial test when my seamstress sewed the grossgrain binding to my specs to reinforce the edge and provide tie out points.
Many hours searching and by the kindness of God found the last roll of new USMC MARPAT coated fabric that was milled for their previous contract. They will never make it again and the source dried up that day às far as I know.
I had put untold hours in researching the best tarp designs used in the lightweight backpacking industry for ground and hammocks. I decided on a caternary design that provides max coverage, cuts out the excessive wind flapping without overtightning the sewn tabs. No grommets to pull out or penny tabs necessary although I like Blackie's idea. The last I checked, it was not sticking together needing multiple guys to pull it apart and grateful that talc not necessary.
I was thinking about hanging it on the wall of my living room/ man cave because I enjoy the looks of the camo pattern better than any military camo in history. It's best for forests. It's not going to see use unless due to disaster. I don't know of any other tarps out there that are Barry Amendment compliant and work in the woods. I would follow Blackie's advice if you want one. He has another video on this subject if you haven't seen it yet.
Blackie, Thanks for sharing this information , great tip and trick. Appreciate all your hard work and sharing your time and knowledge and wisdom and experience and passing on the Craft.
Much appreciated
I’m a retired U.S. Army Infantry NCO who served 23 years (1986-2010) and deployed to combat zones multiple times.
I’ve used the army version of these tarps for years. They’re made the same way by the same company (ORC Industries) who makes the USMC MARPAT design.
1. Any tarp that sticks together has been stored incorrectly. It’s been stored compressed and in a humid environment. This makes the plastic sweat and break down. That means it’s in the initial stage of starting to rot. That’s also why they stink. When it gets to that point it’s garbage. Throw it away. If you don’t the problem will continue until you start getting leaks. Putting powders on it might make it not stick to itself, but it’s still rotting and will never “fix” itself even by adding powders.
2. Only get new tarps. When not in use hang them up in a cool dry place. After use, clean them, dry them and hang them back up in that cool dry place until your next use.
Having served so many years, I can assure you that MOST service members don’t care for, or store, most of their issued equipment properly. This is why we have inspections.
Knowing what I know about how poorly “military surplus” gear has been mistreated and stored, I would never buy anything old or used. Spend a few more dollars buying new and spend more time storing it properly. Just my two cents. 😉
Hello Blackie- Yes- we used to use baby powder, foot powder, gold bond, ect, that would work. Back when I first enlisted, the ponchos were solid green and they were thick, I mean so thick, that you could barely fit one in your pants cargo pocket and still close the buttons. After marching several miles with the bulky cargo pocket hitting against your thigh, you usually had a nasty skin rash when you got back. The poncho you are speaking of, has an outer side and inner side (sticky side)- if you fold or roll it a certain way, with the outer side against the inner side(sticky side), the material will not stick together. Anyways- thanks for the video. Be safe out there-
thanks
Just saw your tomahawk video from 12 years ago, good to see you still making videos sir.
thanks
Thank you Blackie. I have used candle wax with great effect. I used a block of wax, the type you'd buy to make candles. It appears to be much better than talc etc. leaves no mess and doesn't come off on your clothes.
Baby powder...who would have thought it. Great advice.
Very good tip! Thank you 👍👍
They are excellent tarps and I appreciate the tip about the baby powder!
thanks for watching
Good video Blackie , thanks for sharing , God bless !
I’ve used tire talc on them, I think the sticky factor is due to waterproofing. They’re good tarps strong and waterproof.
they are good tarps out of my 5 1 is sticky the others are less so
You look younger today blackie! You mist have sweated out all your toxins!
Maybe he gave up the MTN dew🤣
thanks
Baby powder or foot powder works well on the old ponchos too …Have fun stay safe.
thanks
Blackie you are one of my favorite outdoorsmen pesenting common sense advice. Once again I have to take a minute to digest that southern speak. " Double it in half". Love it, carry on.
I appreciate that !
In the field, going from point to point, before you fold them up, lay them out on bare dirt. Roll on it, or have the new pvt roll on it. 😂 Flip. Do it again. Fold it. Do the same for your poncho if using as a shelter half. Only need to do it if it's hot out. Wash, dry, and powder before storing long term.
Thanks Blackie
glad to help
Great idea Blackie, Thanks
Glad you like it
Good tip, talc, chalk, corn starch
Great tip!
Try graphite, grind no. 2 pencils leds if you need a cheap source. They may sell big tubes of it at the parts stores.
Pencil leads usually are a mixture of graphite and clay. That may be abbrasive. Cornstarch or talcum powder might be a better choice.
should work well
Thanks for the great tip Blackie, appreciate it ! 👍👍
Any time!
I remember back in the day, when I would open them like that, it would literally strip off the rubberized membrane.
yes my old vietnam poncho gave up the ghost like that one hot summer day i pulled it out ahead of a coming thunderstorm was in a hurry and when i pulled a huge part of the coating gave way i was a unhappy wet camper
i used some powdered graphite i had on a sticky bastard and i've used fine dirt both solved the problem pretty well! basically i put the ones sticky side down in a silty patch and dug it around some rubbing it in good! personally i prefer a pair of pull outs in the center that way you can cut a bar and spread the stress load out!
good idea
Modern baby powder has corn starch in it, instead look for magnesium silicate, French chalk, or tire talc.
Thanks
Welcome
the powder is a great tip but I think Id use plain talcum powder with out the perfume that baby powder has which may attract skeeters, gnats etc..
Diotomatrius earth,, i hv a big bag of it, so I'm gonna try it.
Thanks for sharing!!
Yup baby powder ! Former Canadian forces same problem with our tarps I prefer the marine tarps ! Lol don’t tell anyone haha ours are a weird shape hahaha
We always use potters clay dust because - I hate the smell of baby powder. If you know someone that throws pots they will let you have all the dust you want. I never get mine off the floor just to try to keep out things that might harm my tarp.
Diatomaceous earth might work really well too. Get it at health food stores.
Our issue 'Hutchie' tarps here in Australia don't have this issue either, I wonder why they chose something so complex and inconvenient like this?
Better water-proofing maybe?
I have many surplus hutchies from 70s 'til current day as well as non-issue Valhalla, Huss, TAS made and would have agreed 100% until last week. I picked up a 2013 issue hutchie and had a job to unfold it. It is real sticky.
@@adriancowell6850 most unusual! I've never seen that happen before! Still the best tarp going I reckon!
I recently purchased one of these tarps from a local source
Good to know thanks for the info!
No worries!
Probably a good tip for any New Tarp, not just Surplus .
thank you sir great vidio
Most welcome
Corn starch too
What's the size on those tarps, Blackie? New piece of gear to me...
90x80
@@BLACKIETHOMAS thank you, sir.
I've seen a stack of hard core survivors make the best out of a trash bag.
Made me realize that I got a lot to learn.
i agree the woodsmans skill is about layers of knowledge use the best you can afford but also know how to use what ever you got and what ever you have to make
Have you ever had to grab a bird out of the air to see the next day¡?
The BASHAs don't have the lining on the inside so don't stick so much, who'd a thunk the British army being cheapskates had an advantage for a change😅😅😅. I am told the MTP tarps aren't as well made as the old DPM ones and id still get one of those US Marine ones if I got the opportunity at a reasonable price!
I have a MARPAT tarp, as well as a dpm and desert basha.the bashas win hands down imo. The stitching, grommets, tabs, etc are much better on the basha. The USMC tarp is lighter to carry though.
@@boomshanka8743 I cut the webbing that is used to make the basha a stretcher out, makes it much lighter.
My basha seems to retain smells more than my marpat... still smell of fire smoke after all these years😂. The basha has more tie outs hands down. But those shock cord soft shackles that come with the issued marpat are definatly indispensible in their own right
If you can get some old school talc it would be much better than the new corn starch based baby powder. Corn starch can tend to pick up moisture and become almost glue like when it dries.
good idea
Hey, Blackie, what's the name of the company? Didn't see it in the description and couldn't quite make it out. Something like Coffin? Also, how big are the tarps? Thanks. 🗽🇺🇸🤙
Kaufman
Most of the issue ones are 81"x88" or close to it. Hope this helps plus you can join more than one together.
Thanks, guys. I'll check them out.
kaufmans military surplus samson alabama 334-898-1770
I just bought one from sportsman's guide for $26 (buyers club )looks brand new, never issued, I had paid about $50 for another new one from Coleman's that was not bad but had some tape patches and was a little more faded. They won't last long at that price. The one you get may not be like new.
My GS issue bergen in the 1980's was made of butyl nylon. My goodness that thing got tacky as it aged.
some times but not all the time the coating will do that
Baby powder works great. Already employed it!
awesome
I've asked this question to UA-cam bushcrafters more than once. Nobody ever answered me till now. Id rather use cornstarch if it works and have even thought about wood ashes but never tried it thanks.
fine hardwood ashes might work well
Will you do a review of the USGI OD brown wool sweater AKA the Jeep sweater?
sure i think i did one of those in the past
I've got my q&a questions written with a temporary tattoo pen on my belly right now so I can't forget any
lol awesome
They are great tarps, the sticky goes away after some time.
I had one that didnt but it was the big exception
Ha anyone tried some sort of silicone spray......like you would spray on your snowblower chute or power window tracks?
Blackie- what is the size of that tarp?
90 x80
I wonder if CRC aerosol Silicone would work?
Do the penny mod Blackie
Use marble,, no sharp edges
i will
Iv never used one ? How big are they really
90 x 80
If you have to use baby powder to solve such an issue, then that poncho is no good.
Better get an olive miltec poncho.
I definitely expected more out of a $100 tarp at the time
yep but these are 25 bucks each now in surplus so i expect a little problem to work around
@@BLACKIETHOMAS may have some holes. I got new ones at the time. Turned into a blob in my bug out bag. Not cool. I’m going to recommend a nylon Coleman tent wall over the marpat tarp.
There are fragrance free baby powders.
YEP
You folded it backwards, hence it sticks.
DOOD!
DUDE!!!!
anybody have a website for this "Kaufman's?"
it is easier to just call them kaufmans militarty surplus samson al. 334-898-1770 tell them i sent you and they will hand select for you
Old card trick lol
yep still works
