Vintage Military Pup Tent in Heavy Snow & Freezing Rain - Solo Bushcraft Trip

- When I say heavy snow I'm referring to the weight of the stuff. You know those big fat wet flakes that are super heavy, plus you throw in a good helping of freezing rain and cover everything in ice and it was a good test to see how tight I could set up my canvas military tent and not have the thing cave in on me!

I camped in a pup tent about 15 years ago. All my friends that came decided to stay in a newer cabin tent. There was a thunderstorm, I was the only one that woke up dry. In raining or non-frozen conditions, dig a trench around the edge of the tent.
I watch a lot of these outdoor camping shows. I have solo mountaineered (including winter) and camped throughout the Western USA for 50 years (usually solo). I see so many mistakes on these outdoor channels. I find yours one of the best. Your choices in tools and equipment and the way you operate is top notched (despite your UK accent lol).. Thanks for you video's. PS America is lucky to have you... you fit in well
I own a 1966 pup tent that I bought NOS from a dealer who got it from the US government back in 1986. ! It's a serious bit of kit !! Can't wait to get it broken in on my 2024 camping trip ! Great video by the way !!✌
Excellent set up. Added tip what we did in the military in cold conditions and it made a good difference is string up on the inside a poncho liner from pole to pole and tie the sides down the stakes and insulate the ground with good foam mats or make a browse bed and your body heat really helps. Also add the one candle trick to this and its actually cozy. one candle produces between 75 -85 BTU's (90 -100 watts) in an enclosed space like the pup tent it really works. Hot coffee with rum is always is a plus.( that goes without saying. LOL)
This just goes to show that coffee is a well balanced way to start your day 😂 beautiful out there!
hahahaha!! Well said Terry! That had me chuckling
a suggestion:
before you gather water, start fire, this way if fall in water, you won't literally be freezing to death trying to start a fire
Make sense - good idea!
Very true! Always a good idea to have the fire going first! Thanks
That's a great tip. I believe there is a specific order to follow when establishing camp.
Good one bro
Keep helping us learn man
God Bless
Lots of Bushcraft videos out there. Your at the tops. Yeah some channels got more subs. For me you got to like the person. Like I’d go camping with that guy.Your personality is great and your content and filming are excellent. Hope your channel just keeps growing. Thank a lot.
I second that! Awesome job! Thanks!
That's so awesome to hear William thank you so much! It took me a long time to muster up the courage to start a channel and be on camera so I really appreciate that buddy. Thank you. Cheers!!
I agree. I often watch and think how cool it would be to come along with Rob. A lot of these types of video I don't think that! Maybe it's with the lad being a fellow yorkshireman? 😁🤣
I grew up as a military brat and remember lots of times going camping and using old surplus military camping gear like the pup tent you got. I was surprised you had the appropriate tent poles, as those always seemed to be missing or broken. I don't know where you learned how to put that tent up, but I gotta say your technique looked like it came right outta one of those Uncle Sam training videos! Well Done! As I recall those tents held up pretty good in the cold, but sucked balls in the rain... I was hoping to see an old down filled military issue sleeping bag and air mattress...
Well I dont know who taught you to set up a pup tent , but that was defiantly unique and effective . All I can say is back in 1967 we did it differently . I guess you know , each soldier was only issued 1/2 a shelter ,1 pole (2 or 3 sections)and 4 tent stakes no cordage. The Army has changed . Really enjoy your vids, and the way you present the material Stay safe and Happy New Year to you and your family .
Thanks John! I watched a video by a guy called Norseman here on UA-cam, he's an ex marine I think he said and he did a video on the proper way to set up the tent which was really helpful. You too my friend! Cheers
I have the exact same sane knife purchased from a company in Brooklyn, NY. Very happy with it. Nice video.
Fire making processing and starting was 100% better than the last winter camp with the log stack! Loved it simple and enough
Totally agree Jake! Those little cotton balls in vaseline go up so quick! Amazing what a good dry tinder can do
I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting.
Nice camp out, beautiful morning shots. Whiskey and tea huh?
Awesome video, best yet.
Wow, thanks JJ! I appreciate that because I spent a lot of time editing it
Great way to start my Sunday watching Rob in the woods - awesome - nice tent and cool setup -
Thanks David! Glad you liked it buddy!
Okay, being an Army Vet from back in olden times I can tell you - the Army uses things until they are unserviceable. Shelter halves were always like this when they were issued. If there wasn't a hole in it and it didn't stink or if it wasn't covered in stains - it went to the next guy. When I enlisted in 88 I was issued clothing from the 60s when I was in Korea. For training the Army was always a little on the 'skimpy' side. Deploy to combat...you get the best stuff they have...training...not so much. The Shelter Half is an excellent piece of kit. NEVER roll it up wet and put it away - you'll get mold and you'll never get the smell out - believe me.
I have my Great Grandfathers 1945 US PUP tent. It is priceless to me
Great advice!! I was thinking that might happen so I hung it up to dry in the garage with a space heater on it to make sure it's fully dry before I put it away. I imagine that heavy canvas will mold up pretty quickly! Curious to know how guys on deployment would combat this issue
@YouWild am I understanding you correctly in that you were in the military in both the 60s in Korea *and* in 88?
Also, I'm following to see if you mention how wet tents were dealt with in the field. :)
@@jawnsushi LOL...no. I enlisted in 88 BUT we were issued equipment from the 60s. I was born in 70. My first vehicle was a Track vehicle that had bullet holes from Viet Nam too. I retired in 2009.
@@BrooksandBirches So, the Shelter halve has been around since ancient times. The idea behind them is that one guy carries half the tent, 3 poles, 5 stakes, and one rope. We would roll the stakes and poles up in the canvas and then tie it all together with the rope. Deployments today are completely different then they were back in the day. Last time I used a Shelter Half was in Desert Storm 90-91. After that we used Army Ponchos to make a tarp like shelter in the field. I do use a Shelter Half in the winter still...but this winter I am going to try out the Polish Lavvu. I too live in New York. Much of my camping kit is British made too. When I saw your channel I thought - a British Bushcrafter in America? SIGN ME UP! I spent some time with the British Military - well they were attached to my unit. You guys are just like us!
Nice little tent! Great winter camping option. Cheers!
Thanks Jason! It sure is! would be great for a sled or something like that
Underrated vids, needs more subscribers! 💛😇
Thanks Dexter! I just like sharing my experiences with you guys
Oh the good old shelter halfs. I'm a Marine veteran. I remember those so well. Love your videos. Very inspirational. I've recently been putting my kit together. Hope to get out soon. Blessings from Pennsylvania.
Thank you for your service Jeffrey! Well when you do get out, good luck and enjoy buddy
@@BrooksandBirches oh I have been out since 1993. I'm an old dude, 58 but 18 mentally. Love the outdoors.

I got a laugh out of the southern accent. It was close though! Was fun to watch and a beautiful landscape, thanks for sharing.
Really? Southern Accent.... Wow try some kind of limey
@@erickrischke2793 he was joking with the accent and it was taken as a joke. What do you mean try a limey? I have never heard that before.
Guys chill
@@Mason-dj9xp I am guessing he was trying to start something? Dont get his point and dont care. I am chill and not worried about some dude on his keyboard! Have a good day brother!
Lol you to
Great drone video really beautiful, and liquor with a perfect name for 2020.
Thanks a lot! Starting to get the hang of the drone a little better
As an old bet myself, good video! I see you did your research on how to set up the tent. Great job Rob!
Thanks Rich! And thank you for your service! Yeah I watched a video by norseman before hand that really helped
Naguelro and sweedwood is using this often.
Hello, I am a viewer from Korea. I always enjoy watching good videos.😁👍👍
Hello my friend 😊 thank you for coming to my channel
Great video as always! Thanks to U we amatuers may survive in the forest!
Thanks Morgan! Trust me, I'm still an amateur too!
Opening drone shots were gorgeous! I find the Rock and Rye to be too sweet, so, better on the rocks as the cubes melt. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe and warm.
Thanks Maggie! I'm starting to figure the drone out a little bit better I think. Yeah it was sweeter than I thought. I had know idea what rock and rye actually was till after this video and I looked it up
- Whether alone or with many people going camping, I am still happy and infatuated with the natural scenery, white snow everywhere.
Jan, 16 - 2021.
Nice upload rob. Hope all is well brother.
Summer here but a wet one. Sure beats the last few years drought and fires. Stay safe be well bud. Cheers from Australia 💯💯🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍

*Good Morning and Happy New Year Brooks & Birches!*
Good morning!!! And happy new year to you too! All the best
@@BrooksandBirches Thank you. And 19 degrees is *crazy cold!!!*
Ahh, the shelter half...technology dating back to the Revolutionary War. Heavy as can be, and that's when it's DRY. Is it better than nothing? Slept in one for two weeks in Basic Training in 1984, bear in mind that's a TWO person shelter. Bitter cold, snow...they suck. The funny thing is that once assigned to my unit I never slept in a shelter of any kind again, we slept on top our tracked vehicle (a modified ACP) and rolled up in a tarp if it rained, which was rare it being the desert and all. Great video, hope you had fun, glad you were lugging that thing and not me! LOL
haha thanks buddy! Yeah they're pretty heavy alright! Wasn't sure how I was going to get the thing on my pack to start with but I figured it out. I mean it kept me dry but spending two weeks in one..... I'd start to feel a little claustrophobic! I'm glad it was you and not me lets put it that way lol thank you for your service
Nice drone shot of Blue Hills!
Thanks Ken!
Had a tent like that in1953. It was a misquito palace. Happy New Year & Thanks Brian 80
Happy new year Brian! I bet! In the summer they would be filled with mosquitos!
A military style pup tent is two shelter halves and two sets of tent poles which are combined by two soldiers or Marines to make one tent. That, is just a standard civilian style pup tent.
I had to camp in old military pup tens my first couple of years in Scouts. Yeap, touch those sides and in comes the water. I don't remember this being an issue in temperature below freezing. During the summer camps where mosquitoes were notorious was the worst. Being down south it would be HOT, you had no choice but to stay buried in your sleeping bag to survive the nights. Nice vid, thanks for sharing.
oh man I could NOT imagine one of theses things in the summer with all the bugs! It would drive me insane! I salute you for having to put up with it. We're spoiled these days with all the camping stuff we have
The pocket chainsaw was money!!
It worked great!
Good thing you sprayed that tent with waterproofing before you went out camping.
Love the belt saw and the snow.
Cheers and Happy New Year.
Yeah I know, that thing probably would have been soaking wet if I didn't and would have weighed 1000lbs lol! Cheers! Happy new year!
Good one Rob , have a great 2021.
Thank you! You too buddy! Cheers
i saw the bundeswehr faltisomatte on pictures when they left afganistan..not really for 4000m mountains..very good video !!!

I have 2 of these pup tents and 3 polish lavvus, I love these little canvas tents.
nice place
Thank you!
Great video...
Many Thanks....
You are most welcome!
You're really getting the hang of the drone and it shows.
Thanks buddy! I'm trying too. Been trying to study how to incorporate the shots into the vlogs
Great vid .... thanks you
I enjoy your drone footage. You a brave man to fly it in the trees the way you do.
haha thanks buddy! I'm not going to lie there has been a few mishaps already! Luckily nothing too serious lol
Another great video. Happy New year mate!
Thanks Jono! Same to you mate!
So Good
Thank you!
Love my pup tent. built an ammo can heater for it just to go out in winter
That's a cool idea Jeff! I'm not sure how you have room in the thing for a heater though lol, bet it's pretty tight
@@BrooksandBirches I customized my tent 15 years ago to expand the tent and make it taller and sit the stove in the back with a stove jack. Fits me and my 100lb lab just fine but I'm only 5'11" lol
OMG you look like my son and I am completely amazed😳 I’ll show you a picture if you don’t believe me lol. My husband showed me your picture because he enjoys watching your videos.
Really Connie? I would love to see a picture! I've had a few lookalike comparisons do far but none that people were directly related too so I'm very curious to see!

Hey Rob - "How's it goin?" Enjoyed the cold with you. We are at a balmy 33 out here in Arizona this morning. Amazed that your cup of coffee stayed on that little post. Mine would have spilled "straight away". Happy New Year - Stay Safe - Stay Healthy. Regards, Randy in Arizona
Hey Randy! So far so good thanks buddy, how about you? 33 is pretty balmy, I'd take 33 right now lol me too to be honest, I thought for sure it would spill but thankfully not! Happy new year mate, same to you my friend! Cheers
Very good!
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks like it was a fun trip. Going old school is always fun.
Thanks Richard! Yeah it's fun to try and gives you a good appreciation for the people that have come before you
Cheers mate! Nice winter camp 💪🏻 Big old steak and a good glas of whisky in a cold winter night. Cant beat that 😎 Happy new year! Matze

Very nice winter camping trip👍
Yes, the instant coffee, I like the Hazelnut with a packet of Swiss Miss cocoa, does a body good!
Okay, I have one of those survival saws, how long did it take you to cut through that birch? It would’ve taken me half the day, and that’s not including rest brakes! 🤣
Great video and loved the drone shots👍
oh man! I'm stealing that recipe Dan! I didn't even think to put hot cocoa in it that sounds good
Honestly I don't think it took me that long, maybe 5 minutes with the breaks I think. That Nordic pocket saw worked great
Thanks Robert, happy new year to you too. Would love to see a full video using the same accent you use when reading the whisky label. Hilarious. Take care pal. ATB 😊👍
hahaha I'm sure I could give it a try Alan but I'm sure it would be very badly done lol cheers pal! You too!
That is a pretty good coffee balancing act. And I like the new pocket saw. The drone footage is amazing too. Keep the vids coming Robert !!! Cheers brother.
Thanks Joshua! Will do buddy! Hopefully now in the new year I can get back to my schedule I had before of a Monday upload every week

Awesome camp and beautiful drone shots!
Happy New Year from Scotland 🏴
Happy new year to you too Amanda!
So I’m laying down and I check my phone and your drone footage takes me back to the fridge and tv . Such a simple life till you have to edit .....beautiful work Robert you deserve the Accolades Rule number one don’t read the comments unless you have balls of steel
Rule number two don’t flip over in your canoe with balls of steel unless the fire is burning already
Hahaha thanks Bob!! You got that right! It's a simple life until you have to start filming it all lol and then it becomes a process!
Great solo camp, simple and cozy, looked like a lot of fun.. Happy New Year Robert.
Happy new year Scott! It was indeed! Love to keep it simple
Happy New Year Robert!!! Its a beautiful scene as always. I love it when you go to places you have been before. I go, I've been there with your before!! The drone shots were awesome, as was that dancing snow high up in the trees, the flakes were going up and down and all over,, beautiful. I liked the military take on your new year outing. Thanks as always for taking us along.
Thanks for coming along with me Jay! Yeah it was really cool seeing the snow do that when I slowed the drone footage down you could really see the flakes coming down!
Thats a seriously heavy duty tent 😁 Enjoyed the video as allways! Havent heard of the ”unicorn day” before 🤣
It sure is man! I was surprised how dry the canvas stayed! haha yeah it's a term I coined myself lol
@@BrooksandBirches I figured that 🤣
Thanks for another great video.mad saw .never seen that before, nice one.
Thanks James! Yeah me either! It worked great
Great vid your very lucky to get out in the snow I'm so jealous I live in the south UK never snows just rains 😀 stay safe peace 🙏✌
Thanks mate! I'm very lucky to live somewhere where we get consistent snow in the winter now. I feel your pain, I'm from Yorkshire originally and our winters were nothing but rain as well
Years ago I used an old French Army pup tent including in heavy rain and snow without problems. It did have a rain fly though. I upgraded to the Eureka 2 man USMC dome tent after the pup tent was stolen, I'd get another if I came across one.
👍👍👍 Nice ! ...Alan in 🇨🇱
Always love watching until people get out these nasty bottles!
Always enjoy your videos young man. Keep them coming
Thanks Clifford! I will do! Cheers
New to your channel, have only watched a couple of videos but I'm digging your content and style! I loved the drone shots of the snow either from far above down to the river or seeing the snow slowly falling. Both shots were amazing!
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you with us! I'm still trying to figure out the drone but I think the shots it gets are awesome!
That saw looked like it worked pretty darn good. I always thought of those as kinda gimmicky but that one seemed to cut real well. Hopefully it stands the test of time.
That birch log was rotted, though. You would be there for at least an hour if it wasn’t.
The individual chain links that the saw is built from work loose from the pins that connect them after you’ve used it for a while and the saw literally falls apart...
That’s my experience with several of these type of saws.
That particular saw he used was not cheap (50ish bucks). I’d be bummed if it fell apart like you said. I remain skeptical of them.
@@ScottOut-n-About
Time will tell...
A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link after all... for the long term the fewer moving parts the better is my opinion.
I'm not to sure about these saws. I haven't been able to make myself pony up for one. Good chance to see how it works out for Rob. Besides, it was a gift and it's the thought that really matters. Always carry a silky anyhow.
Happy New Year! Man those drone shots are gorgeous!
Happy New Year Mark! Thanks mate! Been trying to practice with it!
Awesome video kinda thought you were going to fall in that ice-cold water, that rope chainsaw that was the coolest thing I ever saw, I was wondering if you can buy it in the stores.
