When I joined the U.S. Army in 1988 we still used these “shelter halves”. Each Soldier always carried one half of the tent. The theory was that 2 Soldiers could always team up and make a complete tent. You can make a shelter with just one half. I’ve done it several times. The half alone was bulky and weighed quite a bit. With everything else we carried it was a ridiculous amount of weight. It only got worse when your kit got wet. I was a Combat Medic back then and had to carry medical supplies as well. Plus I carried a .45 ACP and a M-16A2 and ammunition. My back, ankles and knees finally couldn’t take anymore and I had to retire in 2006. I still have several shelter halves. My 7 year old son can have them now and explore these Appalachian mountains. It’s his turn to carry them. Lol. 🇺🇸
These things are so cool! The history alone is amazing. I was lucky to find this tent. I can't even imagine the weight load you, and many others were subjected to. I am sure your son will have many a great adventure with that tent. I have a 7 year old as well. What a hoot she is. Kids are fun! Thank you for your service
@@ItsGoodintheWoods kids are great and I’m just finding it out. I’ve 2 other kids who are grown but I was never around to really spend time with them due to deployments and schools. Gonna spend a lot of time in the woods this year with my son. Actually thought about camping this weekend in the Wrangler up in the mountains.
We had those PUP tents when I was in Boy Scouts. We carryied those for up to 50 miles on a weekend hike. Back in the 80s everything was heavy my gear weight was up to 40 pounds nowadays people hike the Whole AT with a pack weight of 20 pounds
These are cool tents! It is mind blowing to think about how much weight people had to carry around back in the day....and then to throw in the conditions in which they had to do it in. I am extremely thankful for those people.....and modern lightweight materials!
Always nice to see someone resurrect an old family piece and keep it going. Titanium wood stove really makes winter camping enjoyable. Great combination of old and new
That tent is wicked awesome but definitely looks tight lol but that's okay like you said if it could only tell stories. Wish my stove weighed 4 pounds I believe mine is like 7 to 10 pounds. Good stuff brother.👊💀👍
I love that tent . for sentimental reasons ! Not my first choice , but I use it now and again ! Check out seek outside stoves . they are awesome , however , NOT CHEAP ....mine was $500 ....ouch thanks for watching man ! I'm heading to the mountains in a few minutes for the weekend ! Have a great weekend !
Great camping with a wonderful gift left from your grandfather. I love old stuff like that. The stove is awesome. Stopped by to check out your channel since I am new here. 👊😃🇺🇸

Could feel the cold night. That was some pack to be lugging on your back.I enjoyed your film, and what a great way to acknowledge your great granfathers tent,i'd imagine that tent has many memories absorbed into it.Nice one buddy.Andy.
This was my very first video ! That tent is very special to me ! There will be many more outings with it ! You should have been a fly on the wall when I found that thing ! I was extremely excited!!!
Awesome man! I would like to try that tent/stove combo here in the middle of winter. There are days that go below -45C/-49F and it feels colder than that with the windchill factored in. You mentioned something very important. We have so much to be thankful for because of the blood and lives given for our freedoms. Great video friend.
THANKS KIRK ! This was my very first video !!!! Thank you so much for finding it and watching ! You can't even imagine my excitement when I found that tent , right where it had been sitting for god only knows how long !! You will be seeing a lot more of this type of stuff from me come winter ! We do indeed have so much to be thankful for ...and so many are not..... GRRRRRRRR.... you and me ...we are ! I hope you have a great day man !
I put the pipe through a small section of larger pipe that went through the tent. It works well. Didn't burn or scorch the tent at all. I did a very poor job of showing that.
@@northeastohiobeeyardwithry7360 I used a section of stove pipe to run this stove pipe through. A less than ideal situation, but it works. I should get an insulated stove pipe section for this application
This was My first video ! I carried a larger diameter stove pipe section with flat bottomed screws in it for adjustable spacers . I rigged that through the door opening on that side of the tent and put my stove pipe through that . A less than ideal situation ! LOL !
I think i just binged watched half your videos.. seriously google fat lighter knots and buy ya some. Will burn forever and a staple of the southern US.

That is amazing 🇺🇸 I’m excited to try mine out! Did you not burn the canvas with the pipe?

Cool tent and video man. Hey, what’s that banjo tune?
This was my first youtube video! I don't recall the name of the music. It was free music from the yt audio library
Just bought a 66 us shelter. Getting a stove for xmas ! But I quit drinkin :( but Ill make a pot of coffee :)
Congratulations Robert ! ! You are going to have a blast with that combination ! Those canvas tents hold heat like no rip stop sill tent can
What's the name of the stove?
This is a Seek Outside titanium stove. The large model. Years later and I still just love this stove.
Do you need anything in between the tent and the smoke pipe? To keep it from getting to hot and a fire starti.
