    Lived in NYC for a total of 20 years, I moved there in 1998, then left for 2 years between 2006-2008, then back again until 2012 and I’ve gone back to work there since many times and he’s right, the city has changed a lot in terms of opportunities, but it’s still very diverse, I was never mugged once while living in NYC nor since working there. I miss it a lot sometimes still and it molded me as a person, the good and the bad.

    The frontal lobotomy quote is actually not Tom Waits'. There's quite a debate about who said that first. But Tom Waits himself said in an interview that he read it on a bathroom wall. So it was definitely not him.

    Decentralization. Social media and just the internet has matured to the point that people don't need to go to NYC to "make it". A sense of community is important but that can be found in many other places.

You have been one of my teachers that have inspired me to "Love So Much Till It Hurts So Good" (emphasis mine). You even inspired me to write a poem about unconditional love. Not many people inspire me to write poems about UL, other than God (and a handful of others). I love you until noon and back. Kidding. The problem with new york for artists is its way too expensive to move there as a poor person from whatever working class hell you come from. I know I can't and it breaks my heart. Just a bunch of rich kids now. It used to be a mixture of the two, now not so much. Not only that, they keep tearing the romantic history out and replacing it with corporate building blocks.

    New York, lately you get the sense that the party is over. Could come back but it would take some pretty special circumstances. Transplants will still come and think "wow" because its bigger than their flyover towns, but in reality all the cool left NYC decades ago. The tourists just get high on nostalgia for what the city used to be. And the poseurs who move to Brooklyn from their meaningless home states desperately cling to their new hometown pride.

    That's the thing about "gentrification": it doesn't stop until it devours the cities that enable it. You start with a developing neighborhood, then slowly a few restaurants and bars start to proliferate. Once a neighborhood has a few "anchor" spots, people become aware of the flourishing and money pours in, with residential and commercial development flourishing. Then, suddenly almost, rents become so high that the "mom and pop" spots that gave the neighborhood its appeal can no longer afford to move into these neighborhoods, so the only businesses that can operate are those with massive financial underwriting (aka corporations). Then there is a Target in the neighborhood, a Chipotle, unique architecture is replaced by generic mixed use condominiums and whatever gave the neighborhood character is replaced by the same generic stuff you find in the city's most boring neighborhoods. There is barely anything anyone can do about this pattern, but once it has happened in enough neighborhoods, the whole city takes on that vanilla flavor and it does begin to feel as though these cities are "over." You are just left with people who work for financial instruments as the only people who can afford these lives and these people, without being judgmental, have seldom been the arbiters of "cool."

    sounds like 2 non NYers not understanding NY, the city has always and will always be changing but it will always have its benchmarks, thats what makes it the city it is, always has been and always will be, if you want it to stay a certain way then you dont understand it, its like old people complaining about the youth not being the way they remember it

    • @Austin25254
      @Austin25254 2 роки тому +1

      I am not NYer but I like to study the history of cities, your right cities always change. The boomers are used to the gritty and artsy New York of the 1970s and 1980s and they assume that's the way its always been. But before that New York was clean and upper class during the 1940s and 1950s.

    • @ottebya
      @ottebya 2 роки тому

      @@Austin25254 I think also overlooked to non-NYers is that a lot of the things people know they liked about NY were likely unknown hidden little places at first and people who dont live in those city circles dont find the new hidden places tucked away all over NYC that are currently there under the surface or now in the boroughs, NYC has always been a city that gives to those who search deeper :)
