It always surprises me in videos like this that they don’t talk about children walking on the street alone, without their parents. They ride with their peers on roller skates, bicycles, and scooters. For example, this is not possible in the USA. Parents may be fined, or the child may be taken away from the parents. In Russia it is safe, children ride alone in the metro and other public transport.

Thank you for your kind comments all. My last full blood Russian ex used to say to me "but your soul is fully Russian". : D I must admit I infinitely more Russian than British. Even my phone ringtone is Katyusha. hehe And my Siberian cat is named Mishka in honour of the Olympic mascot my grandmother brought me from Russia. : D I think I will return to my ancestral home sooner or later. Right now, I just want to see the rightful Russian lands liberated as easily as possible. Britain is in a mess... mainly culturally. Whereas Russia has good cause to be proud of the direction it is heading.

What shocks me though is how brainwashed western people can be when they think of modern Russia as if it is still the same as 30 years ago. I would compare it with Great Depression in USA when millions died of hunger, some families had to sell their children as they were not able to provide enough food for them. 30 years later the same country became the leading economy in the world. Should we in Russia think of the USA as if they are still in 1930-s, begging for a piece of bread? Sounds crazy, right? This how crazy westerners sound when they say/think this about Russia. Well, too much propaganda and bad education....

"And we remember every snobby Western m-f…er who ....." Excuse me, this Westerner remembers reading what happened to your country in the 1990s, and reading of the plight of ordinary people who suddenly found that they had no jobs, no income and no future. It wasn't pleasant reading. I was not happy to read of how such a great nation had been brought so low. So I - and many other people - can understand why so many Russians support Putin.
However, Russia has debased itself again by murdering ordinary civilians in the parts of Ukraine that they have invaded. To add to these crimes, they have also inflicted barbaric torture upon civilians.

My comment to western person about gdp: average US person makes a 5k per month after taxes or before? Does an average American own one or two apartments, land and summer house? Cause it’s a very common situation for Russians. And I’ve heard many times, there are lots of Americans who own nothing and pays his mortgage life long, which is very uncomfortable and depressing life by Russian standards. The thing is, owning an appartment and making 300-500$ pro person in Russia = descent life, just like a middle class person from Europe. My perception is that many people in the West don’t understand the reality’s of Russia, being heavily influenced by media, and that’s not new, it’s been like that for centuries, because Russia and the West were rivals for influence, dominance and resources always. Also I’ve noticed there are lots of people from the West who don’t realise that GDP is just one criteria which doesn’t reflect the real living standards in different societies. One have to know cultural, political, historical context of the society. For example a person from Russian provincial city earning 385$ per month is obviously poor, judging from gdp perspective, and that’s actually the most important criteria in todays media and in the mind of an average westerner. In reality, that person, earning 385$ per month has 2 apartments from his grandparents, in 1 he lives himself and the other for rent. Then there is a common practice among Russian employers to pay big part of the salary unofficial to avoid taxation. And you will not ever find this information in the gdp Ratings. Then this person has high standard education for his children and healthcare for free. All the services, cafe, cinema very cheap in Russia compared to western world. So, it turns out, our „poor“ guy is actually doing very well and it’s not visible from outside of the Russia, for an average westerner who can only rely on gdp comparisation and western media, historical stereotypes. And that average Russian doesn’t work his ass off for this standard of living, he doesn’t really fear to lose his job, because he owns a property and has a good education which costed him 500$ /semester at max or for free if he was good at high school. And that’s only economic part of the societies, covering only the very average standard of living, not mentioning that there are several millions of Russians who live much better than that. I didn’t even start with safety issue and cultural aspects. You’ve been lied to your whole life and will never have courage to acknowledge it even for yourself.
P.S it’s not about who is better, we are all just humans after all, irrational, struggling to survive for the most part, ordinary mortals. In that regard, all the internet debates about who have better cars and salaries are laughable. My comment is simply about critical thinking in the truest meaning of the word.

@@andreyiforoff8891 When I lived most of my life in California cost of living was extremely high due to the number of things to be paid for is greater in number than anywhere else. GDP is a false scale and PPP is much more realistic but does not count the vast number if additional expenses on has in the US. My basic cost of living in a home that was fully owned my me, in Marin Country in California was $23,000 each month but I gave all my assets and businesses away to employees, cars to girlfriends, an airplane to a flight school in the end of 1999. I took $6000 and 2 suit cases and moved to St Petersburg Russia. That $6000 lasted a long time bust eventually I started a business in a field I never worked in and found hiring people was hard, everyone one I interviewed sounded too good to be true but I discovered that regardless of degree subject every person was so incredibly competent. So instead of worrying about which of the very good were best, I just announced to the office staff that is anyone known anyone wanting a job, tell them to start Monday morning. In 18 years and peak head count of 83 I never once had to fire anyone. The level of honesty and competence was amazing, In the US one has to put 6 people on probation trial to get 1 keeper, someone who knew even 1/2 of what they claimed. In Russia pick anyone off the street and the are a positive resource.
Another major difference is everyone gets along. It is true, those with different beliefs get a long well with anyone regardless of their beliefs being different.
Another difference is that everyone is highly cultured, the bottom 97% of Americans have never had access to performing arts such as ballet or opera. The last time in NYC with my Russian GF she spotted an a for an opera we both liked so I headed off to get the tickets, I found that the theater was the MET and the tickets were $1600!!!!!!, The performance was good but not like in Russia from 6-8 opera houses within walking distance of my city center apartment with better theater, sets, performance, conductor and acoustics.
Every 10 year old here in St Petersburg has experienced better performances than the 1 in 25,000 adults in the US has ever had even one opera one opera experience.

Because of the exchange rate, it may indeed seem that salaries in Russia are very low, but this is a deceptive statement. In order to understand whether salaries are high or low in any given country, it is necessary to understand what a resident of that country, in this case Russia, can afford to buy with his/her salary, whether he/she can save money. And in this context it will turn out that many westerners with their seemingly large salaries live poorer and have less than the residents of Russia.

I live in London and going anywhere from public transport to shopping is an absolute nightmare. Literally a torturous experience. Everything in covered in shit from actual dog poop to human vomit or chewing gums everywhere to the point of your shoes getting stuck in them. People are not only unpleasant - they are literally dangerous, stabbings and gun shootings in London almost daily now. Not to mention gangs and people throwing acid at will. And the streets are covered in garbage and dozens of homeless and professional homeless who will rob you if you have a shiny watch or (god forbid) a piece of jewellery. Not to mention professional "charity" mugging gangs trying to rob you on every corner if you still have anything left on you.

I've been to Scotland in the summer of 2014, 10 years ago. Wow, time flies! It still feels like it was a year or two ago. I visited Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Glenfinnan. It was amazing and it's a pite that I couldn't visit more places. As a tourist, I loved it so much. I found Edinburgh to be a perfect combination and equilibrium between historical and modern aspects, as well as the sea, despite being cold it's stunning to be close to the sea and hills at the same time. Then I visited the Lake District in England and spoke to some British people. Paradoxically, they had never been to Scotland, even though it's so close. They were surprised that I loved it so much and made dozens of compliments about the nature and architecture, but I understand that not everyone in England take Scotland for granted and also it happens all over the world, also with russians as well, we do not appreciate what we have and what is close to us.
I'm from Moscow and I am very glad that you did an honest review. It's always great to see foreigners who appreciate Russia, because we are always kind of traumatizedhat, at least I felt and continue to feel so, that we are traumatized by the mass media and western governments painting us in a negative light. It would be nice to see a blog about a normal subdivision out of the city center where the average Muscovite lives. the neighborhood, the playgrounds where children actually play, the green pathways in between the housing high rises, all of the resources you need are available at a short walk from your residence. the metro and public transportation is fantastic. Thank you for articulating everything clearly and precisely. Recently, President Putin said that non-traditional people are not persecuted, but only they should not take their personal lives outside the walls of their bedrooms and houses. And rightly so. Society should be guided by the lifestyle of the majority and raise children traditionally, but when they become adults, let them then determine with whom to live and sleep. I agree with your other principles and it is a pity that Europe is degrading. I love Scotland, the poet Robert Burns and the novelist Walter Scott are the ones I first read when I learned English.

Yekaterinburg - the best kept secret of Russia. It is called 'the Capital of Ural' for a reason. Fourth biggest by population and at least used to be third biggest by economy - that is after Moscow and Saint Pete, both of which have the 'city of the federal importance' status btw.
I have said 'best kept secret' as a joke, but during the Soviet Union it used to be a closed city - people could not visit it unless they had a reason. The whole region is where the various industries were evacuated during the WW2 and they have stayed because there was not much reason to undertake the gargantuan task of moving them for a second time. Lots of undustries here. Historically a mining town, it have had the 'factory of factories' built which would produce heavy industrial equipment. Most of the Russian tanks are still produced in the Ural region. Yekat is producing self-propelled artillery units and surface-to-air missile platforms. The Soviet military nuclear project's development partially took place in the region (uranium- and plutonium-enriching reactors). Big transport hub on the Trans-Siberian railway.
It's that kind of a city. Pretty chill and advanced even though the development is lagging behind the two main capitals a little bit. Ah, take all the metro stations and wash your streets twice a day why won't you. We will breathe some more smog it's no problem. Cities of federal importance. We understan xD

As a Russian who’s lived in Moscow all my life (20 years old) I can say a few things:
    1) The crime. Yes, the crime rates here are lower than in a lot of Europe, but it still exists. None of my friends have ever been mugged on the street, but I did have my phone stolen out of my pocket on a bus once, and someone stole the headphones that I accidentally left at the mall. Also, as a woman, there are some parts in Moscow that are unsafe to be in after 10 PM or so, but it’s generally very safe.
    2) The cost of living. As mentioned in the video, if you’re living here on a Russian salary, things will not seem so cheap to you as on a European salary for example. But it’s still pretty reasonable and cheaper than in Europe I expect.
    3) The cleanliness. Yes, everything in the video is true, Moscow is indeed very clean.
    4) The transportation system is indeed one of the best in the world. You can get by very easily without a car, and the local government in Moscow invests huge amounts of money into transport every year.
    5) The traditional values. As someone with more liberal views, I admit that LGBT people might struggle in Russia thanks to the recently introduced laws. You can no longer legally change your gender, and if you kiss your same-sex partner in the street, you can get arrested and fined or people can be violent towards you, especially if you’re a gay man. Generally, however, being gay in general is not a crime here and most people I’ve met are indifferent of accepting towards the LGBT community (the situation is different the further away you are from large cities as people there are less progressive, especially in the Caucasus with larger Muslim populations). Additionally, there is a lot of social benefits to having a traditional family with children as the government actively tries to boost the population growth.
Other things to love about Moscow:
    1) Entertainment. Moscow is full of bars, clubs, museums, exhibitions, parks, movie theaters, workshops and just about anything to entertain yourself.
    2) Bureaucracy: Moscow has some of the most efficient bureaucracies in the world. Almost any paperwork you need can be obtained online or in one of the «Мои документы» (My documents) centers in every neighbourhood.

There is no untruth here; Moscow is a wonderful city to live in.
However, I live in Yekaterinburg, with a salary of $1400, supporting a family of four. With side jobs, I earn an additional $500-600.
For a four-room apartment, including heating, we spend $100-110, and for the car, we spend $100-150. Food, clothing, and all family necessities cost $500-600. We still have enough left over for mortgage and car loan payments, which, by the way, have long been paid off.
I rent out two apartments and own a dacha with 10 acres of land outside the city. Most of the people I know live no worse, and many live much better than I do.
We have enough to go on vacation to the Emirates in the winter and take mini-trips around Russia every few weeks. In August, we're going to Altai with friends on motorcycles. That's how we live, thriving in our so-called "decay"!

      Which way u gonna choose?
Student visa provided by a Language school related to University?
      Or smth else?
By the way, people after 60 years old don't have to pass language tests, as it was said at Sam's Russian Adventures channel.
U can get a Residency visa - this is a new option. U can get it only in Russian Embassy. According to this visa, u have to find a job in Russia during 30 days. But u can change the employer.
Immigration lawyers can get a residency quota for u as well, but u will be tied to the region that gave u this quota.

maybe an option of buying a property can help u to apply for a residency quota. U not being a citizen can buy a house with 1500 sq.m. plot of land. U can buy a flat. So, Student visa at a Language school would give u an opportunity to stay while u are learning, u can durate it, or as u applyied for a temporary residency quota and permit u are allawed to stay in Russia untill u got citizenship. This is from the latest update in immigration law proceedures.
Every University that invites foreign students have a 1-year preporational course (they study language, culture, literature, history basics) but they not prepare for residency tests. There are a lot of Language school related to Universities (only they can provide Student visa).
New thing is as u come u have to register yourself in police office or MFC (multifunctional center), u will have an RVPO (residency permit on studing) and u have to fill the blank with your adress of living in Russia and in MFC they have to register u and fill some additional blanks (smth like that).
The President ordered to make "The Programm for westerners resettle to Russia" but it is not ready yet. There is no such option as Retirement visa. U can adress to Russian Embassy with your suggestiones, so that they could take it into account.
About regions: there are flooded areas, there are forest-fire areas, moskitous areas, windy ares. Areas with coal mining or transporting - this is not good for health, hard to breath. National republics inside Russia have their own peculiarities, so not for everyone to like.
      Contacts:
movingtorussia - (web-site of immigrant lawyers company)
dommigranta - (web-site of a Language school in Moscow related to RUDN University, it is a center of support for immigrants, they teach and train for tesidency tests, consult, organize the testing proceedure).
EXPAT American - ytchannel, his wife is a coordinator for western immigrants Svetlana Anohina, her contacts in description to his videos, she also teaches Russian language.
      * Important - if u chose the help of lawyers and they get u a regional quota for temporary residency - U WILL BE tied to this region untill u got citizenship.
About work: there is an option to Teach English, we bave very tough exams in schools (because it is all in one - school and University exam). U can be a private geacher or work in College or can be a Village teacher. There is a special Programm to attract teachers to village - Zemskyi uchitel'.
TEACHER - is a profession from the list of the most needed profession that after 6 months of legal working will lead u to a right to apply for a Foreigner's tesidency permit (Vid na zhitel'stvo - VNZH). Or lawyer can get a quota for u according to your profession.
THE LIST OF the most needed professions 2024 is on the web-site: migrantcapital >vnzh - po - professii - 2024/.
U need to have papers that u are not a criminal, have no debts, about your income rate when u applying for a residency. Maybe smth else.

The contrast between the media and what can be shown just by looking at daily life is staggering. Granted, most of the footage is coming from upscale and "nice" areas and there are certainly poor and underdeveloped regions in Russia. However, as a whole, the country is modern and has a well-diversified economy with a strong industrial base. Like it or not, the country is going to stick around and have a say in international matters. My biggest worries for Russia include low birth rate and public sector corruption. If those problems can be (somewhat solved) they aren't doing all that poorly.
