An inspiring before and after video documenting the recovery of a boy with Autism using The Son-Rise Program® treatment, a cutting-edge approach for Autism treatment which flies in the face of the conventional ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) approach. The video features Simon, just one of the many children who made a full recovery from Autism using The Son-Rise Program. Simon tells his story from his Autism diagnosis to his hopes today as a gregarious 19 year-old college freshmen.
The Son-Rise Program has helped treat roughly 25,000 children and adults on the Autism spectrum worldwide in 78 countries. The Son-Rise Program was developed by parents Barry Neil Kaufman and Samahria Lyte Kaufman 35 years ago in response to the diagnosis of severe autism given to their son, Raun. Rather than follow the advice to institutionalize Raun, the Kaufmans developed and implemented a radically different treatment that embraced their childs repetitive behaviors (isms) like plate spinning and hand flapping. Rather than judging and suppressing Rauns behavior as ABA typically does, the Kaufmans joined and celebrated Rauns isms, thereby creating a connection that allowed him to emerge from his isolation. Raun Kaufman fully recovered from Autism, attended an Ivy League university, and today, is the Director of Global Education at the Autism Treatment Center of America, with speaking engagements on Autism worldwide. Barry Neil Kaufman is the author of Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues, made into the award-winning NBC-TV movie Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love.
Im thrilled to be able to share this video with the autism community. Like many of the children who have benefitted from our program and like my son Raun, Simon is an excellent example of a Son-Rise child exceeding any expectation that his doctors had for him and eventually even being off the autism spectrum, said Barry Neil Kaufman. Simons story is a testament to never giving up hope, never setting limits on any child's future just because they are diagnosed with Autism. As Simon's video story shows, this belief enabled Simon and his parents to choose an alternative to institutionalization that enabled him to leave his Autism behind to become a communicative, social young man. The sky is the limit for him.
Simons mother attributes her sons recovery from Autism to The Son-Rise Program. Simon was diagnosed by doctors who told me he had a less than 30 I.Q., would NEVER speak or recognize me again, and he would be severely autistic. Today, Simon is an authentic, loving, introspective person...truly a young Son-Rise Program child growing into his future. Years ago, I was told by a Son-Rise teacher that by growing up with the principles of this program, it would continue to be our guide to living. He had found that many of the children he had known worked with would grow up to lead extraordinary lives. We believed in that possibility for Simon, and he has already fulfilled that vision. My husband and I hope that by sharing this very personal video with the world during Autism Awareness Month, that other families will hear Simon's words and find their way to The Son-Rise Program as well.
The Son-Rise Program and the Kaufmans have been featured in over 2,000 articles and programs appearing in major media worldwide, including: The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Self Magazine, Parenting Magazine, The Daily Telegraph, A.M. Chicago With Oprah Winfrey, The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) and Good Morning America. The Kaufman's work has been endorsed by Jimmy Carter, Dr. Carl Rogers, Deepak Chopra, Bernie Siegel, Norman Cousins, Lou Holtz, John Bradshaw, Bill Cosby, Dr. Wayne Dyer and many others. Barry Neil Kaufman is the author of Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues, made into the award-winning NBC-TV movie Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love. In total, the Kaufmans are the authors of 12 books. Through the Autism Treatment Center of America, thousands of parents and professionals from around the world have been trained and helped by this extraordinary method to reach children with Autism previously considered "unreachable".

I used to watch this video when we first started our Son-Rise program, about 2.5 years ago, because it filled me with hope so I could go back into our playroom with joy. Now, I watch it and I still can't believe we had the same kind of success. It is, truly, a miracle.

"When I was autistic" A phrase most of the medical community finds impossible. Much love, Simon! Thank You! One day my son will tell people "At one point I was diagnosed with autism. It is a part of my past". Thank you ATCA! Thank you Lord for leading us there!

Stacey Wheeler my son is currently non verbal. or rather somewhere between. he says a few things. not as much as he used to. he's in therapy twice a week and on his second ot he has speech as well. he knows exactly what Daddy and I are saying to him. he follows instructions. he does not listen in public he does his own thing so we're trying really hard to work on. But he's responding to his therapy I just of course want to cover every facet of this. I wish all the best for your child and you. And if this is true maybe someday I will hear "I love you Mom", though thankfully he has been saying Mama more lately like he used to

I think people who are offended by what this program offers needs to realize that treatment for Autism is a GOOD thing. Ok, so I agree that it is incurable, but treating children who have Autism in order to help them connect with society as well as easing their strong sensory issues WILL make for a more happy and satisfied person. Just look at this young man; he's proof. He can call himself "cured" or "treated" or whatever, but what matters is that he's proud of himself and his experiences.

@ Psionic 7Rat -This guy didn't just have speech difficulties; look how self absorbed - running in circles, patting his head - not looking at his caregiver. To AllOtherNames Taken2; He's not "acting" normal. There's no "do this and "do that" here. It's about helping him understand what it feels like to be in a shared world and inspiring willing engagement. DIR Floortime play does this also. I worked in a Son-Rise program..no role play needed. The brain can re-wire and does. I've seen it.

The governments in the world should support this.
I think it is totally worth it though in both human and financial terms. A nation wich supports this financially gets productive citizens in return so everybody wins if this is widely implemented.
I am afraid a lot of kids get left out because the parents lack financial resources. SO we have to spread the word.

I completely agree. However I do think it varies on what kind of autism the child is, there are HUNDREDS of different kinds of autism spectrum disorders over the world, for some families it works and for some it doesn't. My younger brother was diagnosed as severely autistic after his MMR jab in 1993 and we tried out Son Rise in 1997, although it didn't as they say "cure" his autism, the workshops did however help us strongly reach out and communicate with him. My heart goes out to u

This program does not say that those with autism are an 'unperson' at all. The basis is that all 'behaviors' should not be judged as inappropriate or wrong - but they are rather logical if we could understand where the individual is coming from. They invite you to join the child in the autism world, develop an understanding and love for where they are coming from - then build the trust to invite them to understand and participate in our world.
