I was 24 when this was originally released. To say it was a blockbuster is an understatement. This was a worldwide cultural phenomenon. So much changed after this movie. We used to get the credits at the beginning of the movie but since Star Wars, credits appeared at the end and seemed almost as long as the movie.

@@garybassin1651 that's funny, Gary, I talking to a friend of mines and I was explaining to her about movie credits, and why there are so many. The guilds. As an unwritten rule, no commercial film can be made without union craft people, or the film may have trouble being distributed, or even shown. Lucas was fined a quarter million dollars for insisting that " A New Hope " have no opening credits. He insisted again for " The Empire Strikes Back ", and the guilds told him NO, so he quit the writers and directors guild and formed LucasFilm Limited. That's why Lucas has very few films outside Star Wars. He may have made the greatest movie of all time, but he also had a hand in making one of the biggest flops in " Howard the Duck ". Anyway, do YOU know what responsibilities a Key Grip or a Best Boy are ? A cameraman's assistant and an electrician s helper. Respectively.

@LeopoldoGonzales-og9wc I worked as a PA on a movie many years ago. I was originally hired to do props, then they found I could paint so I painted some scenery. They liked me so much that I got hired as a PA so I stayed on through the entire filming. One day, as I was painting, the director walked by and said, "I like your face. Would you like to be in some scenes?" I got to be in 3 scenes. The major thing I learned is that with all the hurry up and wait, I'm surprised that movies get made at all.

I was a freshman in college in 1977. In 1976, imagine everyone trying to catch a rerun of the Star Trek TV 1960's series.....because they were the best space Sci-Fi that we had. Then Star Wars debuted in '77 and a bunker buster bomb went off. The movie theater I saw this in was the first time I had ever experienced surround sound in a movie theater.....with the fighter ships screaming (and I mean screaming) from front to back or back to front or from left to right to left. Coupled with the special effects plus John Williams iconic score, I was thunderstruck to say the least. I sat thru all the end credits to pull myself together, while listening to the musical score. I will never experience something this epic again in my life.

"The Force will be with you, always."
Fun Fact: The first movie to make over $300 million domestic box office. It was also the first movie to cross $500 million worldwide in its initial release.
Action Star Fact: Stunt doubles were not used for the scene where Luke and Leia swing to safety in the Death Star. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher performed the stunt, shooting it in just one take.
CGI Over Practical Fact: All the CGI was added in the late 90s and NOT part of the original release. I don't mind the changes, except for originally Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shot Greedo (Paul Blake) before the bounty hunter could do anything.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: The weapons the stormtroopers used were essentially the Sterling L2A3 9mm SMG (sub-machine gun), a military weapon developed in the late 1940s in the U.K. and adopted by the British and Canadian Armies in the 1950s. The curved left entry side mounted magazine was removed, and that was as much as it was modified for the movie. The longer sandtrooper weapon was the MG-34 machine gun from Germany.
Location Location Fact: The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia. There is a town in Tunisia's rural south named Tataouine (Berber for "eyes") and George Lucas liked the name so much, he adopted it for Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) home world. Some of the interiors and the courtyard of Luke's house were filmed in a hotel in Matmata, Tunisia. One can visit this two-star hotel and see some pictures and the painted ceiling of what was used for the Lars' dining room. When Luke goes out of the farm, he appears in a flat deserted area, while the reality, when you get out of the hotel, there are a lot of other houses, small stone hills, and a lot of prickly pear cacti (a variety very common in Tunisia). The skeleton that C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew once more and the skeleton was still there.

Man! This is awesome! Love the insight! It's always great to know that the actual actors performed some stunts and very impressive that they would nail that down in one take.
As far as this digitally enhanced version, obviously I enjoyed it but I'd like to get my hands on an original theatrical version of the film.
That artificial skeleton must be a crazy sight to see for anyone who is not familiar with the backstory for it lol!

Yes very good casting as Peter Cushing that played Grand Moff/Governor Tarkin was a true gentleman and always very nice.
It was very hard for Carrie Fisher to deliver Leia's angry lines to him as he always was polite and smelled good like linen and lavender, and she was a big fan of him too.
She had to imagine another guy to bring up the authentic anger the scene needed.
There were only 2 big stars in the movie at that time.
Peter Cushing as Tarkin and Sir Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan.

They were making up the special effects as they went along. There had never been anything like it before. It was taking g too long to film and going over budget. 20th Century Fox was willing to just shut it down and rake the loss. Locals pleaded with them and agreed to take a pay cut if he could have the Mr handing rights. As someone who built the Models and even had Star Wars sheets on my bed I think he made the right choice.

To imagine the experience in 1977, imagine if roller coasters had just been invented and everyone was taking rides on them. For Star Wars, a groundbreaking computer controlled filming technique was invented, allowing for the first time very dynamic filming of moving spaceships. That plus the story and music created a unique experience. The first six movies (I through VI), were entirely controlled by the artist (George Lucas), so they weren't subject to Hollywood studio commercial exploitations.

Btw, any effects that look TOO good, are probably the digital "enhanced" effects that Lucas added in the 90s. Jabba the Hutt and the big lizard on Tatooine, for example, weren't even in the original release cut. The only way to see the original trilogy the way they looked upon release is through some amazingly intricate reconstructions made by skilled fans. They're worth tracking down. Lucas tweaked the effects for years, to the frustration of some of the older fans like me. I'm old enough to remember seeing Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in theaters when they came out. That's the only good thing about being 50 -- I was around for some amazing pop culture. 🤩

This version was upgraded. First off the movie when released was just called “Star Wars”. Once it was a hit, they re-released it with the subtitle because of the sequel. As far as effects, George Lucas had cleaned up the effects, and in the 2000’s, added new CGI, which wasn’t available then. So the dinosaur-like creatures are obviously CGI. I prefer the original film myself, because it was as it was seen in 1977.

There's no REAL way for someone who has grown up in the CGI era to REALLY understand what a massive leap forward Star Wars was ACROSS THE BOARD in movie-making technology, but the best way I could demonstrate it would be to have you watch a movie that was released just a year earlier in 1976 - another mid-budget SciFi movie called Logan's Run. Now, Logan's Run is a good Sci-Fi movie with a good story, but in every movie-making way, it was typical of the SciFi and movie-making in general of the era. Certainly the only thing anywhere close to Star Wars was1969's "2001: A Space Odyssey," but that was written by Sci-Fi superstar author Arthur C. Clarke and directed by Stanley Kubrick, who was the Steven Spielberg of his time, and thus had a relatively huge budget and as much time as he needed to make 2001. But 2001 was focused more on "future realism" and much less on adventure and war, so it was much more intellectual and much slower paced. Star Wars - ESPECIALLY in the context of the era - was fast-paced and thrilling, and NOTHING before had even come close to looking that good (again, with 2001 having come the closest, and 3rd Place being WAY back in the distance). Compare anything in Logan's Run - costumes, set designs, prop designs, lighting, music, creature design, and on and on, to Star Wars, and it's like looking at one of Spielberg's home movies he made at 12 years old compared to Jurassic Park - there's just no comparison.
And the impact it had on the public was massive. Star Wars stayed in theaters as a first-run release for at least 6 months before contractual obligations forced many 1 or 2-screen theaters to replace it, and multiplexes often kept Star Wars for 9-12 months, still having occasional weekend sell-outs of screenings after 9 months. And then, a little while after Empire Strikes Back left the theaters, they re-released Star Wars. Hollywood intentionally tracks movie success via box-office revenues, knowing that inflation will always make newer movies out-earn older ones, and thus allowing them to constantly set new records. But Star Wars, from 1977, would EASILY hold the record for number of tickets sold - by a wide margin - compared to any movie released before or since, and it's a number that may never be surpassed. Then you can talk about the fact that Star Wars absolutely blew the lid off of movie merchandising. It wasn't just toys, it was EVERYTHING - the list of things that you COULDN'T buy with Star Wars licensing was shorter than the things you COULD by with it. Before the movie was released, McDonald's rejected a Star Wars tie-in, which Burger King jumped on, and for the first and only time, Burger King KILLED McDonald's sales, and BK kept their Star Wars promotion going on for nearly a year because it was so successful. I still have some of those Star Wars glasses. George Lucas made over a hundred million in late 70's dollars off of Star Wars merchandising alone.

As for the special effects, a lot were added in the remasterised version. Orginally, the stormtroopers on Tatooine did not have creatures to ride, and the creatures in Mos Eisley were not there, they were added later. Also, Jabba did not appear because the technology was not available at the time, so he too was added in later. You liked the score too, but just wait till you see the Empire Strikes Back, the score is even more phenomenal.

9:05 Keep in mind. In 1977 this scene only included one shot of a Stormtrooper on a Dubac (the big lizards) that didn't move, it was a static prop. In 1997 George Lucas started releasing the "Special Edition" releases for the 20th anniversary of each film. He has declared that these are the "official" releases, and it's almost impossible to find theatrical release video.
The Special Editions are remastered but also include CGI that was impossible at initial release including some deleted scenes that were cut because they couldn't be done to George's liking at the time.

The original versions of the films are essentially impossible to find, at least from any official sources. Lucas ensured that they don't exist. I get where you're coming from but this is an extremely common mistake by first time viewers without any context, I've watched loads of reactions to these and a lot of people simply don't know until it's pointed out to them.
But yeah, the more I've seen it the more I've realized how damaging it is to the actual legacy of these films. I grew up having seen the Special Editions in theaters, and owning them on VHS, which had behind the scenes features before each film about the scenes that were added. So I always took it for granted that I knew what was in the original films and what wasn't. I knew at least one generation was displeased with the amount of new CGI in ANH, which, in conjunction with having far less time to modify the next two films, is why they didn't really add as much as they simply enhanced the existing effects for Empire and Jedi, which is all they should have done here.
But I never imagined that what I assumed was common knowledge would be lost to time, and entire generations going forward would mistake the CGI which wasn't even in the original film as being one of the reasons it was legendary, when the reality is that THOSE effects had nothing to do with it...

In case you weren't aware there are actors inside R2-D2 and C3PO so their movements and sounds, etc. were contributed to by them. Kenny Baker is in R2 and Anthony Daniels is C3PO. So that definitely helped with depicting the nuances of their relationship. I believe (and I could be recalling incorrectly) that George Lucas once said something about that R2-D2 is really very foul mouthed but we just don't know how much since we don't understand his beeps - but C3PO does. After I learned that I gave C3PO (who was never my favorite) a little bit of a break on the things he said to R2. Everyone gets all over C3PO for things he says to R2 but if R2 is over here cursing up a storm and such than have at him C3PO. I think I saw that in a behind the scenes documentary and they were interviewing George but I could be mistaken it's been a while.
The actor who played Obi-Wan is Sir Alec Guinness, a award winning actor (including Academy Award and Golden Globe). For example, The Bridge of the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia are just two of his films. He also did considerable stage acting and was a writer. He got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame before he was even in Star Wars. And, yes, you saw that correctly I addressed him as Sir. He was knighted in 1959 by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the arts. And he also served the Royal Navy in World War II. He was a very interesting fellow for sure.
Jesse (talking about Obi-Wan Kenobi): "He knows his stuff. He's very capable." then moves on to the next character.
Me: waits-blinks-waits-blinks-waits I can wait you just keep watching those movies and see if capable is the only word that comes to mind.
Just kidding. You had a fair assessment based off what was provided in this film.

"...how could not one of them get hit, slow as they were walking..."
Put yourself in the situation. You're in a fire fight against enemy forces. Two droids, unarmed and not shooting at you, cross the field. Are you aiming at the _droids_ or the guys _past_ the droids that are shooting at _you?_ ... Yeah, exactly. They got through because no one was _trying_ to hit them, they were aiming for the guys shooting back.
    "...that's a powerful, powerful voice..."
James Earl Jones. Yes, he had one _heck_ of a voice! ... And he's not the guy in the suit. The guy in the suit was someone different (name escapes me). During filming he said the lines so that they would have the _timing_ right, but Jone was the one who did the recording for the voice, so you get the best combo of someone with a _dominating_ physical presence, which the actor in the suit has, even _without_ that voice, and the _power_ of that voice... the combination is _super effective._
"...I wonder if this is a real location..."
Tunisia. They filmed the Tatooine stuff in Tunisia.
"...for 1977, that looks pretty damned good..."
That's because it's from 1997. In 1977 they didn't have that (or several other) bits in there, but they were later added for the 'Special Edition' (there were many later revisions, too) which added in CGI and many deleted scenes. Most of the restored scenes and CGI additions are fine, but in _this_ movie there's three scenes which were altered in ways that _hurt_ the movie. In some cases they were deleted for a reason, in others they were just silly. While Star Wars has some humor, the original trilogy isn't silly for the first two movies the last... is silly, but by then the realization set in.
See at the time, movie studios didn't know how much the toy rights to a movie could be worth, and in lieu of pay to keep the price down for the studio, part of the deal for Lucas was toy sales. As such, as the movies went on, _especially_ the third one and all the prequels, he kept trying to appeal to a younger and younger audience, making it more childish, suffering from power creep, because the integrity of telling a good story was overshadowed by the greed of selling toys.
"...who came up with these names..."
The screen-writer... George Lucas. He was pretty awesome. He wrote and directed this. But part of what made the originals so good was the editing. Sometimes knowing what to keep and what not to is as important as the story. Though often overlooked, the editor who made this movie so good was Martha Lucas, George's wife... whom he was divorced from later, before the version you're watching now.
    "...what's gold tin-man's name..."
    C-3P0. Technically, it's not a name. It's a model number.
    "...he's like a snail..."
Both are. It's not easy for one snail to stop another. :)
"...you'd have to be living under a rock..."
You'd be amazed at the number of people down there. There are reactors on UA-cam who _did not know_ before hand. Not many, but a few. It's a shame, though, that one of the biggest twists in cinema history is ruined for everyone after because it's so iconic.
"...I'm almost embarrassed that that sh-t scared me..."
Don't be. It startles a _lot_ of people.
    "...they went like that..."
Yeah. That's brutal. That's _maybe_ kids aged 12 to 14 or more type stuff. Keep that in mind as you watch the rest of the movies... and watch them be targeted at younger and younger audiences... so Lucas can sell toys.
The first real added scenes that hurt the movie come when they enter Mos Eisley (the 'wretched hive'). The silliness of the bots smacking each other, and other things that are there. Those seem _much_ more aimed at young children, right? ... And they were _not there_ in the original 1970's and 80's releases.
"...why can't the droids be in there..."
Prejudice. It's why droids are _all_ slaves and biological beings generally aren't. Beyond that, there may be a more practical reason. It's possible any droid might be able to record what it sees and hears for playback. In a shady bar where people discuss illegal trade daily, no one wants people with recording devices around.
"...just slice his arm off... everybody just get back to what you were doing..."
I think it's a _great_ way to demonstrate the sort of place it is. How rough and shady does a place have to be that someone _losing an arm_ is so low-key an occurrence that as soon as it's clear no one else is picking up the fight they just go right back to BAU? It's basically an old-west saloon type scenario.
"...they just go back to minding their own business..."
This, too, is a scene some purists hate. Notice how Guido shoots at Solo but misses? ... Why? Why would he shoot at Han like that? He wants to collect a bounty, which is _much_ harder to do if Han is dead. On top of that, what are they odds they fire at the _exact same moment_ like that?
In the original, Han shoots first, Guido dies, and that's all. It underlines the cold, mercenary person that Han is. Han isn't a _hero_ at this point in the story, or even an _anti-hero,_ he's a criminal working with the _actual_ heroes.
    "...always talking sh-t to him..."
We don't know what R2 is saying in return. In the _original_ script, apparently R2 was gonna have a foul mouth and return everything he got, so for all we know R2 has been giving 3P0 the business this whole time.
"...wait, did he step on him..."
Yes, and you laughed. And think about what that means for the movie.
This scene, with Jabba, _was not there_ originally. Which means you _hear_ about Jabba but never _see_ him. This guy supposedly scares _Han Solo_ who, in cold blood, blasted a guy (Guido) in a bar. _That_ makes Jabba a credible threat.
But _this scene_ entirely undermines that. Now Jabba is just some big, goofy thing to laugh at, not a real threat. It's the sort of thing you have in a movie for young children, _not_ one meant for teens.
Try to consider how big a threat Jabba would seem to be if all you saw was Guido mentioning a bounty, then Han _obsessing_ over money, and then getting his money to run as quickly as he could. It makes Jabba seem low-key _terrifying_ as a thought, an unknown menace acting in the background and driving Han's actions. And makes it _far_ more meaningful when he comes back at the end to save the day.
"...how did it look that bad-ass for the mid 70's..."
_That_ one, the Death Star... that was how it looked. And it did so because they made a scale model of the thing and moved it slowly. Practical effects were king at the time, and it was _awesome._ Now lots of movie CGI is just... bad... and makes it look _wrong._ More wrong than a _cartoon_ looks.
    "...Vader's tall AF..."
Yep. That's the physically imposing part. 6 and a half feet tall. I think they gave him platforms to make him taller by a couple inches. It just made him more threatening.
    "...that suit must be hot..."
And, after the garbage scene later, stinky. They never managed to get it clean after that. Ew.
"...he must be on some stilts or something..."
Nope. Chewbacca was played by Peter Mayhew, and he was 7' 3" tall.
    "...one of his homeboys?..."
You're confused, right? This scene, with Biggs, was _also_ not in the original release. Why? Because _Biggs_ is mentioned, otherwise, in _exactly_ two lines. Once on Tatooine (the desert planet) where Luke is complaining that he's trapped on the farm ("Ah, Biggs is right, I'm never getting out of here!") and once during the flight combat ("Blast it, Biggs, where are you!?"). And that's it. This scene _doesn't_ need to be here and just causes confusion. There's a _reason_ it was cut and it was a good one. But, later, in the 90's, when Lucas didn't have Martha around to edit sensibly for him, he crammed it back in, even though it mostly just adds confusion to the movie, with a character Luke doesn't otherwise show any attachment for and who just dies anyway.
"...as much sh-t as he talks to him, he loves him..."
Yes, and this is a _wonderful_ dynamic between the two. I love their relationship!
    "...this ship is f'ing gigantic..."
Remember they first mistook it for a small moon. Different sources give different sizes, but it's apparently around 100 miles across... as a _sphere._ So yes, it's huge.
You asked about budgets. This was... somewhat of a pricey movie, but not _hugely_ so for a special-effects heavy one. The average from the majore studios at the time went from 2.3 million in 75 to 8 million in 80. For instance, Superman from 1978 cost 55 million. So 11 million isn't even _that_ much. In _today's_ terms, 11 million from 1976 is about 60.7 million today.
It's a shame you can't get the de-specialized edition. Yes, there are a _few_ things the Special Edition does better. But not much, and what it gets _wrong_ hurts more than what it improves.
Great reaction! Looking forward to the next!
    Have a nice day!

29:52 Ironically, the late Peter Cushing who played Grand Moff Tarkin used to bathe in lavender oil and apparently smelled lovely. It's also humourous to note that the boots he was given to wear for his costume were too tight so during that scene with Princess Leia when her home planet is destroyed, Cushing was actually wearing fluffy slippers.

Note: You are watching the 1997? version. Lucas added CGI later to scenes he wanted to add or update. It should stick out becaue the movie was all practical effects initially.
Lucas had, what we know as A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, written as one giant script. He thought it was going to fail and try to finish the series as a serial.
The budget was moderate for the time. They did have to go back and get more money to finish the film.
I knew I saw the movie over 10 times in the theater. I can remember the full amount. It played for about a year.
There was a definite Before Star Wars and After Star Wars as it became the father of modern special effects.

I think there were already a few minor changes as far as sound but no CGI. Except for Jaba and a trooper riding a dino, it wasn't much different. I saw it in 1985 and it was just as amazing as it was to you. Even then there was nothing like it. Filmography wise I would say Lawrence of Arabia in 1961 was just as clean. While most of the original practical effects are in the film, some of them have been updated over the years with newer technologies. The film was not expected to be a big hit so the budget was not that much. When it became a hit, there was more money for the next film so the next one has had fewer alterations made to it. The lightsaber duel looks stiff and clumsy because when it was filmed Lucas was attempting to achieve the lightsaber effect entirely as an on-set practical effect without using any special effects in post production. This involved a lightsaber prop that had a stiff blade covered in highly reflective tape. The blade is then spun by an electric motor inside the handle giving off a flashing and throbbing effect. The motor was then supplied with power via a cord that went from the actors sleeves down on to the floor and trailed off. The actors had to be careful not to break the prop and not trip over the cords.
The way the process worked was, the tape reflects the studio lighting so brightly it can make objects look like they are glowing. There are a few shots, especially in the original release, where this effect is still in place. Luke's lightsaber practice scene aboard the Millennium Falcon, you can still see mostly what the original effect would have looked like. Lucas was ultimately unsatisfied and had the special effects department add a colored glow to the lightsabers in some scenes, others he left with the original rotating rod effect in place.
In all the sequels the rotating rod was eliminated and the fights were performed with more rugged props with no concern for creating an authentic looking laser sword on set, knowing it can all be created in post production. This frees up the actors and the director to be more dynamic and exciting in creating fight scenes.

Regarding stormtrooper aim... its a huge fallacy by fans NOT listening to the dialogue and following the plot.
In the opening scene, both sides are hitting, and stormtroopers are taking out plenty of rebels. It's one thing to have time to aim, quite another to be rapid firing while breaching.
On Tatooine with the killed jawa vehicle, Obiwans' exposition told us stormtroopers had precise aim. And we're given in dialogue that obiwan is a veteran, not just in age but of war. If a vetwran tells you the enemy can aim, you dont shrug it off.
The issue is that "show dont tell" breaks down. The reason why is the next and only other time we see stormtroopers shooting is on the death star.
Do you REALLY think a room full of troops couldn't hit Han, evwn accidentally, when he pulls up on them??
From the get-go, Tarkin and Vader guessed they were returning the stolen plans to Leia. And he's too careful to assume they have the plans ON them. And you can't torture dead prisoners.
Thus, the stormtroopers weren't TRYING to hit Leia's rescuers, merely herd them, round them up, but they had to do so while being shot at.
Its not that stormtroopers can't aim. They were intentionally missing when shooting at Luke and co.
Nobody seems to get that even though it was heavily implied that the Imperials were trying to take Luke and co. alive.
By the time the 3rd movie came out, it was already an incorrect meme. So Lucas made it even worse by having teddy bears with booby traps decimate the stormtrooper legion.

I don’t get why everyone goes off about Stormtroopers missing their shots. I can name 100 movies off the top of my head where the bad guys fire off thousands of rounds & miss the protagonist. Just watch Commando, or any Schwarzenegger film & they miss far more than the Stormtroopers ever did. And that’s one of hundreds of examples.
So, go easy on the Stormtroopers. They’re just draftees. Most of em probably don’t even want to be there🤣

Mate, you're watching the digitally remastered version released by Lucasfilm during the 90's. CGI was used to enhance the original 70's film. Loved Star Wars though. It was the first Sci Fi film that didn't have all shiny new government operated spaceships. Things broke, were worn out. The universe it showed felt lived in. Not a polished utopia like star trek. More spaghetti western in space and less James bond with a phaser and a warp drive.

I agree, that element of things looking worn out made it feel more organic in a way. I can appreciate a sleek and shiny look, but a more gritty and grimy look works great if implemented correctly. And I'm going to have to find an original cut of the film to check it out. I remember one really late night after work at a theme park when I was in my 20’s, me and my friends got drunk at my house and watched a vhs of this ….. yeah I’m that old…… there were no special releases and no internet to discuss things. But I was watching the scene where the stormtrooper hit his head on the door. Remember at that time there was no mass communication and distribution so o was not aware of it. But that night for some reason I was lying more attention to the background. When I saw him hit his head I freaked out!!! I started laughing and my friends were like “ what’s wrong with you?” So I backed it up and pointed it out!!! They had no idea either!!! We rewound that scene ten times just rolling on the ground. I know Lucas’s wife won an Oscar for editing , but that shit and the R5D4 on Tatooine mishap made me say “ oh, George must have been under a lot of pressure to just get this movie out the door. “

The first 2 places where you said "this looks awesome for the 70s"
Bruh... you're watching the Special Edition version....
For the 20th anniversary in 1997 they digitized thw original film, did some color correcting...
    And added in CGI...
The entrance scene into Mos Eisley was all CGI, as was the lizard like creature a stormtrooper was riding earlier. But pretty much everything else was practical effects using minatures etc. Luke's landspeeder was a set piece on a wheeled chassis with a mirror in front of the wheels and attached to and spun around a motorized hub at the end of an arm (like a fairgrounds ride) with a camera at the hub.
Lucas waa the 70s version of Jamea Cameron... always innovating. He founded Lucas Arts to make the matte paintings for background ovee the blue screen work, as well as the Insustrial Light And Magic special effects studio.
The scene with Han and Jabba was re-added in 1997. It was filmed but dropped (as was an earlier scene BEFORE the droid sale where we meet Luke... Luke witnesses the opening battle via binoculars then speeds off to the local fueling and repair depot to tell his so-called friends, where he meets hia friend that lefr last year, Biggs.) Jabba is a cgi overlay over a human actor. Jabba in the 3rd movie is like 4 times as big (and was puppeteered, not cgi)

9:11 yes that is obviously a cgi added scene. The original scene had a static dewbak in the background not moving. It looked better to be honest then the ps2 level animation that was added. In my opinion the best change to the original movie was not even a cgi change. It was a tonal shift in the scene where R2 gets kidnapped. The original scene it was broad daylight …. Which was confusing when they took him to the dandcrawkwr and it was night time. So that change was good.

Welcome to the Star Wars fandom, Jesse! If you are going to watch the Star Wars movies, I highly suggest that you watch them in this order (after this movie):
    Episode V: Empire Strikes Back
    Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Episode II: Attack Of The Clones
Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
    (Stand Alone) Rogue One
Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi
And from there, watch whatever you want. Honestly, the Sequel Trilogy (and Solo movie) sucks more than the Prequel Trilogy and I refuse to watch reactions to them.
Again, this is just a suggestion. You can take my suggestion or not. However you will greatly appreciate the order that I suggested afterwards. The plot twist in Episode III is more impactful and Episode VI makes a more satisfactory emotional ending, because it is the end of the story. This also solves the prequel paradox by making all these movies just one story. I can't say anything else or I would go into spoilers. Now some other people will suggest the Release Order. I can't stop you from watching that order, but the "because we watch them in that order" is a super weak reason. My "Satisfying Order" serves a narrative purpose (something the gatekeeping Release Order purists can't say) and you'll be watching all of movies anyway. If I could blank my mind and watch these movies fresh, that's the order I would love to watch them in.

    • @jessebatres6895

Even as typing out this comment my intrigue to go with this order you suggested is going up. Thanks for watching and commenting! I can't wait to watch the rest of the films!

Pre-Disney Star Wars (episodes 1 through 6) •IS• the story of Darth Vader. While he is only in Episode 4 for about 12 minutes, it is only Vader, Obi-Wan, C-3PO and R2 who appear in every one of the initial six films (the first two trilogies).
The other relevant 'frame' to view these films: Things are almost never what they seem:
Is Han the cynical smuggler who is only "in it for the money"?... or is he a badass pirate who proves indispensable to the Rebel cause? Is R2 an insignificant little maintenance/Astro-Droid, or the lion-hearted hero with unswerving dedication to destroying the Empire? Is The Force the equivalent of a 'cosmic butler' which helps select trained individuals perform Jedi mind-tricks or Vader's force-choke? ... or does it have a Will of its own (that only becomes apparent when all six films are taken as a whole?) Is Vader's suit an intimidating "Batman-style" fashion statement... or is it a mobile "iron lung" acting as life support gear to keep alive someone no longer able to breathe on his own? (...and so on.) Buckle Up!

This was the first movie. The only movie! Then came two and three. I haven’t seen the other movies made after #3 and I probably won’t.
We watched it at the movie theater the day it came out in Santa Cruz, Ca.
I remember carrying our youngest (born in ‘75) as we walked in. He was terrified of the dark theatre and clung to me (quietly) - this was his first movie. It was packed. Both our little kids were as transfixed as everyone else during the entire movie.
The audience loved it and was was blown away. Everything in this movie was an original idea - never been seen before.
Lucas tinkered with perfection and added the ridiculous first jabba scene that ruined the momentum. The theatrical version is not available to buy. I much prefer the original version. It made me so angry I boycotted this film for a long time, but when I finally saw it, Lucas hadn’t ruined it as badly as I thought.
He shouldn’t have been allowed to touch it. It’s extremely horrific that first time viewers to this film already know about Luke’s father. Such a crappy spoiler. Oh well.
I’m glad back to the future is hands off to making “improvements” on those perfect movies.
