- The film that horrified a generation and kept them out of the water! Steven Spielberg delivers a gripping and suspenseful cinematic experience. I hope you enjoy my reaction to JAWS 1975!

In the Jaws novel the mayor was in deep with the mob. He was desperate to save his skin. Spielberg figured the movie didn't need it and it would just add length to the movie. Also, Quint didn't destroy the radio out of fear of losing the money. He wanted to kill the shark. Every shark he killed was him avenging his friends on the Indianapolis. That was a true story, by the way.
Quint is Ahab. He had finally found the ultimate target for his rage.
Damn! This completely shifts my view of Quint at the end. I thought it was strange that he would put them in that position, but it makes sense after what he went through years earlier. Man it's kind of tragic now. I feel like he was severely scarred and traumatized that it impacted his judgement and he was wanted to kill the shark at all costs.
If they would've included the mob storyline then I might've had a small amount of empathy for the mayor. I still would've disliked him a lot but he would've probably annoyed and agitated me less.

Quint was also a trophy hunter. Look at his shack. Shark jaws hanging up all over the place. He saw the shark as the ultimate trophy. The biggest he will ever encounter. He didn't want to let anyone else take HIS shark, his ultimate trophy. He didn't simply want to kill it. He wanted to catch it. He mentioned catching it right in the beginning. Plus the line about the taxidermy-man.
It wasnt just about revenge, otherwise he would have gone after the shark right in the beginning. He didn't.

I think Quint was aggravated with Brody always wanting to call for help, so he smashed that radio once and for all. Quint and Hooper gained each other's respect with the leg comparison and the Indianapolis story. Suddenly Brody was the outsider.
This film is one of my all time favourites and I love to see people watching this film for the first time. 😊

Story he told about the USS Indianapolis is true. When Quint crushes his beer can, ya have to know back then they were steel, not aluminum, and quite a bit harder to crush. Knowing that makes Hooper's styrofoam reply all the more funny.

Fun Fact: Director Steven Spielberg named the shark "Bruce" after his lawyer.
What Script Fact: According to writer Carl Gottlieb, the line "You're gonna need a bigger boat." was not scripted, but was ad-libbed by Roy Scheider.
Location Location Fact: Quint's (Robert Shaw) boathouse set was built in Martha's Vineyard on an abandoned lot. The city council made the production crew sign an agreement to demolish it after filming and replace everything exactly as it had been, right down to the litter.
Writing Ensemble Fact: Quint's tale of the USS Indianapolis was conceived by playwright Howard Sackler, lengthened by screenwriter John Milius and rewritten by Robert Shaw following a disagreement between screenwriters Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Shaw presented his text, and Benchley and Gottlieb agreed that this was exactly what was needed. It's widely considered the best scene of the movie.
The Rest Of The Story Fact: Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro (RIP), who played Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot. I'm told Jeff still owns the restaurant at Martha's Vineyard and he loves talking to fans.

That look on Martin's face when the Shark sprung up while he was dropping chum was incredible. Looked so genuine and awesome to hear how he ad-libbed the "bigger boat" line!
That USS Indianapolis monologue had me speechless! I could literally see the events going on by how Quint delivered it. Outstanding work by Robert Shaw. I was doing some research on the actor's just now and was so sad to see that Robert Shaw died just a few years after this film was released. What a talent!!
Wow! What a crazy and sweet encounter between Mrs. Kinter and her onscreen son. That's sweet that he thought about her years later and they would reunite.

The USS INDIANOPOLIS story by Quint, is based on actual WW2 EVENT. Two films to watch about this event: MISSION OS THE SHARK. And the film, INDIANOPOLIS.
Nice! Someone else mentioned earlier that it was a true event, and going to have to check out these movies and read up on it some more. That must've been hell on earth for those that experienced that terrible event.

I remember watching an interview of a survivor many years ago.
He said that he and a shipmate were walking down a corridor when the torpedoes hit. His shipmate grabbed him and shoved him down a side passage just a wall of flame tore down the corridor. When the man got back up and looked, his shipmate just wasn't there anymore.
As an eighteen year old in 1975, we had some of the best films made! This is a classic. Another from same time that will scare you much more than this, The Exorcist. Loved your insightful reaction! Peace from Northern Michigan.

I've seen a lot of reactions to this movie, but you are the first one to say what it was that caused such fear and panic while watching this movie: the Kentner boy being killed. I wouldn't learn this until years later when I took a screenplay-writing class. On a psychological level, that particular scene signaled to the audience - without us even realizing it - that NOBODY in this movie is safe. My goodness even a 10 year old kid isn't safe. That only added to the suspense. It's amazing that this movie will be 50 years later next year (as of this writing), and this movie STILL works. It's still a thrill ride. And the story is so well told that it's not even until hours after the movie you realize there were many questions you weren't supposed to ask. Especially since we now have the Discovery Channel and Shark Week and now know how preposterous this story is - but it sure is a lot of fun (sharks don't ordinarily eat people for one thing let alone go after a boat for revenge).
Yeah I went back and watch it, and man if you pause it at the moment the shark lifts him up and blood is going everywhere sends shivers down my spine! That made moments like the attack in the "pond" even more frightening because as an audience member you just know that not a single one of those kids there are safe.
And true, it's kind of silly to think a shark would go after the boat as if it's thinking "I'm gonna get you bastards back 10 fold!" lol

When I was 10, in 1975, & my cool older sister snuck me in to see JAWS, I became obsessed with sharks. Of course my sister snuck me in to see Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Black Sabbath & Kiss. Older sisters ROCK.

My family was on a day trip to Martha's Vineyard when we stumbled on to the set of what we now know as the classic "JAWS!" We saw Quint's shack, part of the shark and a whole bunch of extra's. A very cool experience for a 14 year old kid. Nice reaction!

The summer I saw it, I wouldn't swim in our POOL, and the bathtub was suspect too. I was a pre-teen, and kids were not safe from the shark. I didn't put a toe in salt water til my late 30s.
I was fine with the pool but any water I couldn't see through? Nope.
Susan Backlinie, the girl swimmer at the beginning, just passed away 5/13/24. She was 77 years old. RIP "Chrissie"
Shaw wrote the final draft of the USS Indianapolis story after two other writers couldn't make it work. His first performance was done while he was completely drunk. He begged Spielberg to let him do it again, sober. He did and that's what's on the screen. A riveting performance of a terrible, real tragedy.

When I was 16 years old I spent a summer in Greece, rural Greece. I lived two blocks from the Aegean Sea and spent most days snorkeling or scuba diving. One day I was about 150 yards offshore on the surface of the water I noticed a large shadowy shape swim under me. It vanished but a moment later a great white shark I guessed to be about 17 or 18 feet in length surfaced and circled me three times and then dove and swam away. That was in 1971, four years before "Jaws" was released. I've never been able to find the right words that would accurately describe how I felt from the moment I noticed the large shadowy figure swim under me until I was back on the beach. Just saying I was horrified would not begin to describe how I felt.
Oddly enough by the next day I wasn't at all concerned about going back to my watery fun. What is more odd though is after watching "Jaws" I've never so much as dipped a toe in any ocean again. I think it's a combination of the movie bringing back memories of how I felt plus reminding me of what I believed at the time I was just moments away from experiencing.
I believe the movie made me fully realize just how lucky I was. I was able to see an incredibly amazing massive deadly creature so close that if I had wanted to, and if I would have been brave enough to, I could have reached out and touched it's pectoral fin ... and how lucky I was that it must have just been curious rather than hungry.
One thing to keep in mind about going into oceans or swamps or other places with predators that will feed on humans, even though humans are not by nature part of their diet, is that once you enter an ocean or swamp or wherever with such creatures you have left your habitat and entered their habitat and you become part of the food chain, and you're no longer at the top of the food chain. When someone goes anywhere with critters than can hurt them seriously or kill them or eat them it is an 'enter at your own risk' situation.

And I agree with you about staying in our lane. The ocean is their territory and we really have no business there. It's really just a part of earth that we can experience for a recreational reason, but there's really no reason to be there so it's taking an unnecessary risk.

Also , i heard that "your gonna need a bigger boat' was an ad lib line added in that was not in the original script. Roy Scheider will live on in movie history due to that line. Very little was known about sharks back then. It was believed they were literally eating machines and attacked anything. The fear of sharks went insane after this movie was released.
It's like the perfect line right after him seeing it come out of nowhere! It seemed very natural and I'm glad they kept it in. I wonder what beach attendance was like over the next year after the film was released lol
For the first few years of my life, I could not watch this film because as soon as John Williams AMAZING score started I was too scared to watch anymore. 😂
Haha! I don't blame you. It blows my mind how a composer can bring something so perfect for a particular film to fruition. There's literally nothing else that would fit this film better. It's like he caught lightning in a bottle with this.

Great natural reaction! Can you imagine what it must have been like to watch “Jaws” in a darkened movie theatre way back in 1975 with 300 other terrified screaming people? Well, I DON’T have to because I was there! Folks walking out after watching this movie looked like they’d just been in a cage match! Spielberg was only 26-27 years old when he made “Jaws.” This movie became the #1 domestic box office grosser of all time in just 60 days, unadjusted for inflation. It started the summer blockbuster movie tradition. Adjusted for inflation, “Jaws” still resides in the #7 spot. The only movies to surpass it since are the original “Star Wars,” “ET,” and “Titanic” (just barely). So, domestically, adjusted for inflation, neither “Avatar,” nor “Avengers: Endgame,” nor “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” made more money at the US box office than “Jaws.” That’s how huge it was. It was a phenomenon. You had to be there in the summer of 1975 to understand. Beach attendance went way down. It received not one, but TWO standing ovations near the end of the film all 5 times I saw it that summer - in 3 different cities. I was 15 and it was a blast! In my lifetime, only the original “Star Wars” had a greater impact on movie-going audiences.
I was 13 when this came out in '75. I still don't go out in the ocean past my knees. The movie Piranha took care of rivers and lakes 3 years later.
I stick to pools thank you. I don'tike going on water when I can' t see what's in there with me but I love shark movies of any kind. Up until jaws most sharks we saw in movies were about the size of dolphins....not huge like Jaws.

13:21 Fisherman on Left doesn't look just like Quint by accident. That's the immortal Craig Kingsbury, the local fishing legend that Quint was modeled after. Mr. Kingsbury even taught Mr. Shaw how to talk like him. As it turns out, he sounds like an Irish Mr. Kingsbury, but Mr. Shaw did an excellent job. (Mr. Shaw was actually quite posh. It's some transformation.) Interviews with him at the time are hilarious!

This film was a very rare case where the movie was actually better than the novel (which I read). The novel has allot of sub plots (like Hooper and Brady's wife having an affair). These things are just distractions from the main plot, which they realized when they did the screen play. This was the very first "blockbuster" summer film of all time and ushered in the era of summer blockbusters. I was just 9 years old when I saw it. There was a line half way around the block to get in. My friend and I got so scared in the opening scene (we were in the front row) that we had to move back six rows lol.
The thing I hate about the mayor, saying that his kids were on the beach too… Yeah, they were ON the beach, not IN the water!
Right! I hated how he went to that older couple and basically forced them to get in the water with their grand kids. He should've been the one leading the way with his own kids if he was truly confident that it was safe. Ridiculous!

Amityville in “The Amityville Horror” is a real place on Long Island, NY. It’s a suburb of New York City. “The Amityville Horror” is real fake story - meaning it was a story about a haunted house that someone really claimed was true, but it’s not. The house is real, though.
Amity in “Jaws,” is a fictional town supposedly on an island near New York. It was actually filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. A lot of real local residents had small parts in the movie, including the Harbor Master, Frank Silva, and the two kids who did the prank with the fake fin, the younger of whom is now the chief of police in Oak Bluff on Martha’s Vineyard.

Even better films for Scheider are "All that Jazz", "The Seven-Ups", "Sorcerors" and, in a supporting role, "Marathon Man". (If you don't know the iconic scene from that film…you will.)

Best movie of all time, a combination of horror and suspense. The performances by the three leads fantastic also we don't see the Shark until an hour and 20 minutes into the movie

P.S. So many reactors feel that Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want to share the money. That could very well be and even after 50 years of watching this movie, I always thought the same thing. That HE needed to be the one to kill the shark. Ego. Like Moby Dick. Not sharing the money is very possibly why (and if it was explained in the book I forgot it ages ago. I read it in 1974.) and now I kinda want to know for sure.

I saw this movie the first week it came out. Stood in line for over an hour. It was the week before my family went to Florida on vacation. I have always felt the most horrific thing in this movie was the sport jackets the mayor was wearing! UGH!

In my generation we were more disturbed when a person died.
This new generation seems to have a complete disregard to the loss of human life but extreme emotion when an animal dies. Just don't know what to make of that. I personally care about both. I guess I am just well balanced. 😆

This has been my favourite movie ever since I was little, and I love seeing people react to all the scares and screams 😂
Fun fact: hooper was supposed to die in the original script and be eaten in the cage, but while they were getting footage of real sharks off the coast of Australia, one of the sharks got tangled in the wires that hooked the cage. Obviously they didn’t want to waste this amazing footage so they re-wrote the ending and added the scene into the movie 👍
Hooper did die in the book, he also had an affair with Ellen Brody. She was portrayed as unhappy with the dull island life, she missed living in New York.

Shark attacks on humans are rare, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of being bitten:
Avoid certain times
Don't swim at dawn, dusk, or in the dark when sharks are most active. Also avoid swimming right after a storm.
Avoid certain areas
Stay close to shore and avoid murky water, deep channels, and waters with known discharges or sewage. Also avoid areas where people are fishing, especially if there are signs of baitfish or feeding activity, like diving seabirds.
Avoid certain behaviors
Don't swim if you're bleeding from an open wound or menstruating, as sharks can smell blood. Also avoid harassing or trying to touch sharks, and don't wear shiny jewelry or bright colors, as they can resemble fish scales or shark prey.
Be aware
Look for signs that a shark might be near, such as circling birds, splashing water, or feeding seals and dolphins. If you do see a shark, try to keep it in sight and slowly swim backwards towards shallow water. You can also use an electrical pulse device (ESD) to repel the shark.

12:13 those are real photos of shark attack victims. The mangled leg was of a teenage boy who bled to death before they could get him out of the water.
Man this film didn't hold back in many ways. I would've thought those photos of shark attack victims were specifically made for the film. Not sure if you've seen a recent story of someone who was bitten by a shark. Their entire calf was bitten off and even looking at that is almost unreal to think how a creature can just bite it clean off. Thanks for the insight!

Mayor is not the villain. The villain is US, the people
I've noticed that people --- even highly educated and smart reactors --- seem to blame the mayor instead of blaming PEOPLE. When you think about it, the mayor is a SUPERB public servant: he KNOWS the people so well that he knows the will of the people who elected them BEFORE they even tell him. They voted for a man who makes decisions THEY want.
You heard them in that town meeting:
PEOPLE: "Are you going to close the beaches?"
Brody speaking for the officials, INCLUDING the mayor.:" Yes. Yes. we are."
PEOPLE: groaning. unhappy. shuffling "48 hours like THREE WEEKS"
The villain isnt the shark - he's doing what sharks do (looking for food and eating it).
The villain isnt the mayor - he's doing what mayor's do (the will of their constituents)
The villain is the people - our own self interest ABOVE our fellow man.
The villian is US. The mayor's villainy reflect OUR villainy.
Most reactors and viewers cant see it, or dont want to.
True. The source of the problem is the people. The Mayor would've likely ended his political career and yes business owners would've suffered from the lost of revenue, but I can't get past the smug face the actor had when they were explaining to him that it was a great white shark. As far as Sheriff Brody, I think there's a time or multiple times that a person may encounter a situation where they have to put their own interest and possibly even livelihood aside for the safety of those you've sworn to protect and serve. This film is a great example of good men that are complex and filled with flaws that have to eventually step up and do what's right.

He's middle aged and gave up his seniority back in new york. He has a family to feed, he can either afford morals or he can afford to feed them, but not everyone is lucky enough to afford both morals and parenthood.
i agree, with the smug look...wasnt a fan, myself. BUT....if i put myself in the mayor's shoe's it's not a smug look, it's kinda JUSTIFIED: Brody is an OUTSIDER. He talks like an outsider ("cah in the yahd"), he acts like an outsider ("doent make much sense for a man afraid of water to live on an island"), his WIFE is an outsider ("when will we belong?" "Never. You werent born here.")
Imagine an outsider coming into your HOME and telling you how to run your life...how to EFFECT your income. Would that be smug or would that be gentle tolerance for the new guy?
The reality is that in the entire summer only 5 people died - 3 because of their DIRECT action (girl swam alone at night (no no), Gardner and Quint were HUNTING the shark (expect to be hunted back). Only the raft boy and the boy scout leader werent complicit.
Is 5 too many? Yes. But Sometimes people die of bee stings, peanut allergies, or slipping in their bathtub. Death is a part of life. We cant shut down the livelihood of the living because 2 people died.
Dont get me wrong, I'm 100% with you on them being wrong, and I didnt like they Mayor's mannerisms. Big picture....it's still the fault of the people. To me, this movie hits different after Covid: we witnessed, firsthand, entire groups of people working against their own self-interest. Sadly
The shark's head was filled with red paint, squid, and kegs of dynamite. The explosion went off flawlessly and it got a huge reaction. The shark dying from harpoons in the novel didn't sound good. The explosive ending is still talked about to this day!
Wow so just one take? Damn, I wonder how many shark heads they had to spare but good thing that moment was done flawlessly. As soon as I they showed and talked about the gas cylinders I thought, "Potential death of the shark!".
Remember seeing this in the Cinema at the age of 11. This was the originally released with the equivalent of a PG rating ! The studio had to fight to get that rating because it was given an 18 rating start with ! Funnily enough the year before "The Texas chainsaw massacre" was released and the film makers wanted PG rating and not the 18 rating it eventually got ! In terms of blood, jaws definitely showed more.
WHAT! NO WAY! I have The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on my list of films to react to and I would've bet money it would have more blood and gore. I'm actually surprised this would get a PG rating during the 1970's. Must've been awesome to see this on the big screen back then!
The Chief of police he was trying to do the right thing and shut the beaches down for everyone's safety. The mayor should be the one to blame. He kept the beaches open and knowing that there was a real threat out there. And look how many kills there were. Even though there not very realistic of kills considering it ate the dog first and then went for the boy, well in that since the shark would not eat again for a while or how many times this shark killed so unrealistic.
Multiply those $ amounts by 6-7 and you have something close to current day dollar amounts. Back then a modest car cost around 4,000 dollars and gas was less than 60 cents per gallon. Seeing the Frenzy the reward caused of people going out to kill the shark for 3k doesn't seem like much but if it were today, ,that would be a 18 -20k reward or more since you couldn't even buy a cheap car for 21k, but you could buy one for 3k then.
Nice! And $10k would be a nice payday for one shark. A few people have mentioned how Quint was more fueled by vengeance and not money, which changes my view of him. Wish he could've made it and reenact his best impression of Scrooge McDuck lol!

Fyi, back in the days of Free Love before Herpes and AIDS, people would often have sex first, to see if they wanted to date. Very often people just had sex to be friendly, not expecting more. It was a much more generous and forgiving world until the culture wars. Back then, Republicans and Democrats both had liberal and conservative wings of each party. But civil rights and free love and modern advances were too much change for many conservatives, who all consolidated within the Republican Party, which became a "conservatives only" club by the 1980 election of Ronald Reagan. It was a whole different world before the Culture Wars, the War on Drugs, and AIDS. We were headed in a very different direction back then, but it was all too much for many people.
There is an older movie you need to see. "Orca, the killer whale".

Oh man! I didn't even realize there was a shark week. Perfect timing lol!
Brody wasn't stupid! He did all he could with his power! The mayor has more power than the police chief! So that's why Brody was handicapped! Jaws was Steven Spielberg's huge hit movie! This movie put Steven Spielberg on the map! After this movie the movie studios gave Spielberg the green light to direct any movies! His next hit after Jaws was Close Encounters of the Third Kind which also became a big hit!
I like that Brody eventually pushed the Mayor into doing what's right. I was hoping for the classic gut punch from the main hero to the unlikeable character. lol But in all seriousness, the mayor is a flawed human being that had more bad moments than good. I do think he had a point about not doing the autopsy in front of everyone so that the body of Alex wouldn't just be there for all to see. There's a glimmer of heart within him, but it's sickening that an additional person had to die before he finally closed down the beach.
And yeah what a masterpiece by Spielberg! And I definitely want to watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Thanks for watching and commenting!

True! Yeah hooper is one of those guys that's so insanely passionate about his work that he literally forgets to do the things he needs to in order to survive (eat, drink water, heck he probably hasn't seen a doctor since he was a kid.) haha! I love the character of Hooper!
The original Alex Kitner shark attack, was cut out. It was deemed too brutal.
Man even this was pretty brutal. Seeing him get raised up into the air and all that blood going everywhere is frightening so I can only imagine what the original attack was like.
That's a myth sorry. There was no "original" Alex Kintner scene. What you see with those still pictures are just practice run throughs of the shark taking Alex Kintner from the raft. They had to practice it over and over again. While this was being done some still pictures were taken of it.
They never wanted to show much of the shark for the Kintner attack. In fact they wanted it even more obscured by the sun, but by the time the shot was ready the sun had moved and we got to see more of the fins than intended.
The scene with the pier and the unseen shark had already been filmed the month before, so it would have been completely redundant in the story if they showed the shark in all it's glory eating Alex Kintner..... then went back to hiding it completely again for the pier scene.
Also if they showed the shark fully in the Kintner scene then the whole tiger shark sequence would have been pointless, as everyone would have known the shark was much bigger than that.
Also, it's worth pointing out that 99% of the Kintner attack/beach scene was filmed in June 1974 at State Beach, Martha's Vineyard. Bruce, the mechanical shark, wasn't used at all. Water was way too shallow anyway. At the end of location shooting in the September they moved to the deeper water of Katama Bay some miles south. That's when they got all those shots of the shark attacking the Orca and eating Quint etc. While they were there using Bruce they then decided to do an additional insert shot with Bruce coming up and taking the Kintner boy dummy on the raft. That's the shot where the fins look to roll over. They never even intended to use Bruce for the Kintner attack when the scene was actually filmed three months previously.

I read about it earlier today. It's so horrifying to think about what those men went through! Just being out there wounded, starving, no fresh water, and waiting to either die or being attacked/eaten by sharks. My god it's such a terrible and sad tragedy.

Man I was just reading up on the cast and it blows my mind when I think about this film being almost 50 years old and how most of the cast is no longer with us. I was sad to see that the actor who played the oldest son "Michael" died from a heart attack at just 37. It's sad to think that more could've been saved if those responsible for monitoring the ship would've immediately acted and investigated the matter once the Indianapolis didn't reach its destination.

Quint smashes the radio not because he wants the money for killing the shark, but because he's determined to kill it himself. He starts to almost be driven mad by the shark, sort of like Captain Ahab and the white whale from Moby Dick.
Someone else and I were discussing this yesterday and I'm going to rewatch this with that in mind. It has definitely changed my view of Quint and it makes sense that his trauma from the past is driving him to do whatever he needs to in order to be the one to kill the shark.
