The shovel has been a running joke through Helldivers since the early days of HD1. During a time when people were looking for any hints they could at upcoming content (because the devs tend to add hints into the maps for things that are in the near future), someone spotted a shovel as a prop in a scene and took it to mean that melee weapons would be coming to the game. It was funny enough that the devs decided to start scattering shovels in more places. One of the biggest call outs of this is a scene you can find on some HD2 maps where a shovel is wedged into the front claw of a dead charger. There's a similar joke with forklifts, since players in HD1 pointed out a vehicle bay in the ship and kept asking when they were getting vehicles. The devs responded with something along the lines of "you already have them. There's a forklift in every Super Destroyer". Now, forklifts are the most prominent vehicle in the game.
Fun Super Fact. The Hell Pod was originally named the Help Pod in regards to its function of delivering helpful Helldivers. Helldivers too were actually dubbed Held Ivers, as they were held in the pods and the Swedish word "iver" is a noun for "eagerness" and "zeal". Treasonous propaganda would try to twist these noble words, but the righteous spirit of Super Earth did as was done with Yankee Doodle, and we took their monikers of mockery as the honorific titles we use today!
They were actually called “here” pods. And those that would use them were called “here divers” After the practice of Heredivers entering their here pods and pointing at a random point on the map and shouting “here” for 5 minutes
I feel like you buried the humor here a little too deep. But I take it you are Swedish or at least friendly to Swedes, so who cares anyway. People who actually WORK for a living and value themselves, their families, their histories and heritage - Don't like Sweden.
You are missing the cyborg red energy they harvest from humans. Ever run through the battles and see the cages, bodies and red energy containers. Looks like the humans are being used like the bugs.
I don’t think it’s the brains given there doesn’t really seem to be a pattern to how they are torturing the SEAF folks they capture. Also we literally never find a “pow” camp with survivors and one would assume if they were using them for parts executions would only come when they detect the helldivers. I can’t imagine a brain harvested from a dead and decomposing corpse left in the open air would be viable even if the blender they dropped into the cage with them left the skull intact.
We just glazed over a few important questions when talking about the frozen backup divers. How long have they been on freeze? How many are there on freeze? How can they have a family if they are frozen down? Potentially, you could give your body for Super Earth, then get frozen during transport to the front, then stay on freeze for hundreds of years until the helldiver before you finally dies. Your "family" is long gone bro.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep details of the war intentionally vague so Helldivers don’t realize the war they’re currently fighting isn’t the same war they were fighting 100 years ago. Like he said about 1984, “We are no longer at war with the bugs, we are now at war with the Illuminate. We have always been at war with the illuminate.”
the cyborgs began altering themselves due to Super Earth putting them into the harsh climates of cyberstan. They were miners that were being torn apart by the condition and had to adapt themselves with machines to survive.
@@AlexMuseMatrix Creek is one thing, at this rate SUPER EARTH will be under attack soon enough, we need reinforcements in the automaton front and FAST!
17:17 This is a common misconception, Helldivers are quite well trained by modern military standards. Super Earth has a military culture, remember the gun for everyone's 16th birthday they're expected to know how to strip and use. This is reflected in gameplay, with them never having a single jam, being able to reload and aim efficiently while running and even sprinting. Knowing how to operate everything from lmg's to pistols, to hmg's to mechs to anti air missiles ect... They can also throw a stratagem 50 meters on flat ground which is impressive on it’s own, they’re all in good shape. They are well trained and equipped by modern military standards, the problem is they’re diving into 4v250 engagements. that's 75v1. You're always going to have a high casualty rates with those odds no matter how good your troops are The training seems lax because we don't see most of it, but the reality of it is they've been training since early childhood.
Helldiver training is pretty poor, but helldivers don't just have helldiver training, they have been trained their whole lives and they are the people that naturally rose to the top, the most fit, the most practiced and the most motivated. As for their equipment, it's all good but none of it is indisposable or irreplaceable. I remember someone once saying that the adverage helldiver only lasts 9 drops, they might have been pulling that out of their ass or it's just something the community came up with but I think it's true. The helldivers are the best of the best and that skill is most useful when they are reduced to cannon fodder.
About the shovel, there's also a chance to find a person lying dead on a grave on Terminid planets, with a shovel and a dead Stalker next to them, implying that they killed an entire Stalker with that shovel alone while burying their dead teammate, then bled out after.
you can find that on automaton planets, i think its implied he killed a rocket devastor or regular one with the dual action shotgun and finishing it off with a shovel
I’ve seen one with a brood commander with a shovel stuck in it. Only one I haven’t seen with a shovel in its side or head is a charger. Almost all of those have a hellbomb in or next to them
Helldivers being first deployed to deal with rebels reminds me of Halo SPARTANs. They were both in their respective universes just before their governments needed them for a different purpose.
It reminds me of the Russian VDV, the entire explanation seemed to me to be an allegory to Russia VDV and their mythos and mystique but at the end of the day are just thrown into the meat grinder.
It should remind you of starship troopers again if you ever read the book. The book featured a lot more than the war with the bugs. It actually begins with the cap troopers who are fired at battlefields and planets the government is attacking. The hostiles they are encountering in those initial engagements are "dissidents" and the nature of these deployments involve the cap troopers being unable to return until all of their ordnance is spent. Most modern sci-fi is heavily inspired by the older stuff and much of it is almost copy paste with some different names and plot. As much as I love it this includes things like halo.
shittiest tomb for the unnamed soldier that I've ever seen. Not even an eternal flame. Can't be it. Cool that you know what that is though, many don't these days. I like the other comment talking about shovels in HD1 and how there was some meme about shovel melee weapons...
You forgot to mention that you can find terminid bodies on automaton planets indicating that super earth did try to destroy them by sending terminids first
I think the developers at one point talked about fans wanting them to add shovels because of the common ground with 40k and the memes that came from it. I'd wager that's why the shovel is there.
Hang on a sec, on 31:00 about the idea of illuminate harvesting the terminids earlier: Do you remember the tooltips that go "you may stumble upon ancient ruins scattered in the galaxy, disregard them or it'll be considered treason ". What if, those ruins are from illuminates farming them?
OooOoOh 42:00 what if the termicide is actually meant to mutate them? Like, of course, some will die because of forced changes (think of radiation), but what if that is a massive forced Experiment? God damn, Lore can go deep

A Democracy Officer has been sent to your location. Please enjoy your time at Freedom Camp. May you come back more patriotic than ever. FOR SUPER EARTH!
The lore for Helldivers lines up SUSPICIOUSLY WELL with an old franchise called Supreme Commander, specifically the first game. A powerful faction seizes the planet, starts the earth empire, finds some aliens, nukes the aliens, followers of the aliens called the Aeon Illuminate declare war, a scientist links an AI to his brain, Earth deems that an abomination, the Cybran Nation segregates from earth and demands independence, Earth installs a loyalty program to their AI forcing them to submit, Cybrans declare war. Earth collapses from political turmoil, the United Earth Federation forms from their ashes and is tasked with reuniting humanity, no matter the cost in lives, economy, or otherwise. They call the conflict “The Infinite War.” I am damn near certain the Helldivers is the Earth Empire in the early stages of the Infinite War, before ACU’s take over conflict. The mass casualties, the factions aesthetics, the extremist nationalism. It’s all just… too perfectly lined up I would strongly encourage anyone who happens across this random comment to do some research on Supreme Commander
-Colossal class titan terminids are just Level 10 Deathdivers difficulty. -SEAF worker bodies can sometimes be seen stacked neatly on enemy planets, the same they do right outside bootcamp. -Planet Zegema Paradise holds Zegema Beach and must be protected at all costs.
Awesome video mate, really appreciate the detail and depth you go into. I love the Helldivers lore, and you've just deepened that apprecation for it with this. That automaton message where they talk about how they would just leave us in peace if they won; and give us what we could never give them... man, that's just so dark, and so 'are we the baddies'. Seriously cool stuff, lore wise. Anyway, great job, brother. I mean, erm, TREASON
Thanks so much for the kind comment, glad you liked it! Just finished recording a follow up with a bunch of fan theories from the comments, so hoping to get that edited soon, stay tuned for more!

My favorite part of Helldivers is it posits the entire human population is localized to Super Earth and we are using the vast majority of habitable planets for research purposes. One might say the centralization of the population may be intentional as to better control the populace, I say why would anyone ever want to live anywhere but Super Earth! TWENTY BILLION DEAD BUGS FOREVER
38:52 Also just because we say the planet is 100% liberated doesnt mean its actually completely bug-less. What I got from interacting with the war table for the first time was 2 back to back messages saying that they cleared all the bugs off a certain planet and not even 2 seconds later saying that they missed some and now the planet is completely infested again. Also when you close a bug hole you do just that, CLOSE it, you don't destroy it or seal it off forever you just collapse enough put a dirt cap on it. Im certain that there are thousands if not millions of bugs under our feet at all times, just look at breaches, they show up anywhere on the planet in massive amounts at a moment's notice
What I find incredible -- and I apologize if it's mentioned after 28:00, because I'm at the middle of the video -- is that the Helldivers are practically *farmed* and indoctrinated into loyalty. I especially love to talk with the mechanic girl in the super destroyer, she spits out gems of the in-game lore. When you see the sprawling suburbia scene in the intro video, that's essentially, from a certain perspective (and you already mentioned the actual life expectancy of 2 minutes) a huge farming system, not really a residential area, and I find this such a hilarious and scary, thus grotesque parallel to the world we live in. It is such a good and strong depiction of what modern capitalism, global corporations, and contemporary wars truly are. If George Orwell could've written his books without using words, this is the video game he would make. This world building is especially important if you consider the questions of morality. You, as the protagonist, are completely anti-heroic, no matter what you do. You can practically be as virtuous as possible and a phenomenal human being who hugs everybody and is considerate to everyone, but if the organization that employs you is bad, very bad on a galactic scale, doesn't that make you a villain? In fact, you are not anti-heroic, you are what is known a Byronic hero, a hero who exclusively does bad things for the greater good, however unlike the classical depiction of Byronic heroes, the way you belong to a brainwashed society aligns you well with the ordinarily heroic virtues, and classic tropes of "a loner rejected by society, who has a distaste for social norms and is self-destructive" simply do not apply any more. In this sense, apart from Starship Troopers there is also a strong shared similarity with Ender's Game, to an extent. The upper organization is technically cultivating a murderous machine through multi-generational experiments, with individual specimens all sharing a degree of implementation freedom, but which do not question their authorities, or else... All of this is technically a supernazism in disguise, and literally everything from vast propaganda machine, to gene selection/cultivation, super soldiers, and multi-generational experiments has been attempted by the nazis. Only for it all to be "shut down" with the fall of Berlin. "Could it be that it wasn't shut down, but it was reimagined and rebranded?" was the key alternate history concept of the Verhoeven's movie. Even Philip K. Dick was ready to confirm that John Smith was a better, more superior Nazi than Himmler or Hitler, with all the intrigue and nuance surrounding The Man in The High castle. So all of this is a direct question in your face "Are you loyal to this kind of service?" and people already have their response deeply embedded inside them. Including me, although I'll be reported to the nearest democracy officer for having crime-thoughts.
"By the time I post this video, it's possible that the Helldivers have battled all the way there" Meanwhile: SIR, THE AUTOMATONS HAVE ALMOST FINISHED TAKING OUR FORWARD COMMAND AND HAVE STARTED TO SPREAD TO THE NEIGHBOURING SECTOR! WE'RE BEING PUSHED TO RETREAT!
In the first game, it was a joke that AH made because the community was always trying to discover what weapon would be added to the game, so they started putting shovels in many places. It's likely to be a nod to this running joke
The kill count of Helldivers isn’t necessarily a plot hole for the automaton theory, after all think about how many civilians we go save on these planets they could be using regular civilians to make automatons as well and that would probably be more than enough to cover the number difference.
I recall a story about a mother in Russia whose son reported her for saying anti-communist things. She told him she was very proud of him for his loyalty to "the party" before she was shot.
in the book Starship Troopers, unlike the film, The mobile infantry drop in personal power armor in multi layered capsules to act as shock troops. That is the direct inspiration of the hellpod more than something like Halo. clearing bug holes with grenades and nerve agents is also directly out of the book.
Interesting knowledge: The map IS bigger than you are able to see, my buddy opened the game files and there are like 2-3 more rings on the outer edge of the map.
@@VaultLore Looking at what is in the game and yet to be added I bet they will. There are entire areas of the battleship that will be open in the future along with other things that have already been leaked. For example that area with the monitors opposite of the armory has an entire room behind it but isn't ready to use. I'm super hyped!
I agree with the Super Earth theory. In the PA at the beginning of each game, you can clearly see that the terrain and ocean layout doesn't look like anything present on our Earth
46:20 she actually question this the other day when I was playing with some randos. Is once we got back to the ship I made notice that I didn't die once but yet I had no other colors but red on my character . Last I checked the bugs bleed green and last I checked regular oil is black in color. If they're using the bugs it would technically be green in color. But since it's red makes me think they're using human blood to some capacity. Not to mention there's recently been findings of them experimenting on human captives.
42:55 listen, everyone would hate this, but a bile charger. It can spit acid and when it’s killed it explodes, but it also runs you down and has super heavy armor.
Hey bro, enjoyed the video, couldn't listen all the way through because of the mic pops. You can use Izotope RX to remove mouth pops automatically in seconds. Keep up the good work!
I like to think that the reason Super Earth needs oil as a fuel source for their FTL drives is because we did a pisspoor job at adapting the tech we stole from the Illuminates. Our drives probably aren’t nearly as efficient as the Illuminates were, since we need such a relatively crude fuel source as compared to what the drives were designed to use, which was probably a form of fusion.
The technology developed is the result of countless years of work. Your lack of appreciation for super earth soldiers who secured that technology and the scientists who reworked it to our needs will be noted for your next meeting with your democracy officer
It would be so awesome to get a series of fps rpgs to flesh out all this lore, halo style. I think it would really open up this franchise to a bigger fan base.
Something I think you completely skipped was how on the Automaton front we've been seeing massive cloaked ships that simply sit in the skies. I wouldn't be surprised if these were Illuminate ships, as I myself have seen them actually engaging with friendly destroyers. They can be very hard to spot sometimes. I think the Illuminates are probably working together with a force like the Terminids and potentially Automatons. My theories are based on the fact that Super Earth command was truthful about our victories against the Illuminates. Despite the Illuminates possibly farming the Terminids, Whats stopping them from have made an alliance? I suspect that a common enemy like humans would be a good enough way for an alliance. With the terminids being spread across the galaxy by Illuminates. This would be a way for the Illuminates to bleed down Human millitarys to make a victory/revenge against them easier. I think that the cloaked ships over the Automaton sectors could be part of the older fleets with less capable cloaking, with the newer and more useful ones being used on Terminid worlds. I also wouldn't be surprised if there were peace talks happening between the Automatons and illuminates. There have also been multiple clips to surface of blue lasers being fired at Helldivers mid combat. I saw a theory that this could be Illuminate snipers testing the survivability of the divers and their armor. We also have a whole empty sector of nothing going on in the bottom of the galaxy below Super Earth.
Fascinating video. I can't wait to show it to my democracy officer along with your name, address, and personal ID number. I think he will also enjoy this video
You got the marching wrong a bit, the premise is the same but they say "Heart steel, we kill, get up, onto war" and "Cyberstan, cant keep her down, legion go, onto dawn"
Wdym "will the automatons get an AT-AT"? Do you think they could get an even bigger walker than the Factory Strider?! Or maybe the Siege Mech from the first game will return...
I mean bigger would be awesome. The factory strider actually got released a day after I recorded that part of the video, so I didn’t know it was coming 😂
I think the shovel could represent conquest. Settlers "breaking new ground". That's how I first interpreted it, helldivers are the vanguard to pave the way for expansion, yada yada. Great video!
so basically we have to fight the worm from dune. If that enemy was added, i think it would be cool for a stratagem that drills into the ground and explodes.
take note that all areas shown as inhabitable on the earth map are extremely rich in resources. they could be actually gigantic industrial zones that need to be kept safe from the public
@@VaultLore In our time, Greenland has a LOT of mineral deposits. From oil, to gold, to rare earth elements and strontium. It makes sense that Greenland has these deposits, because they weren't exploited in the past.
After blowing up spore spewers I once went there and found that there's been a facility there. Possibly one of the units that dispense that toxic stuff that were suppose to kill them. Though it might be a compound that were designed to accelerate their growth process, but they found out that this is mutating the terminids, and now they have a flying issue on their hands. Could call it a failed science experiment added to the tasks list of the helldivers maybe. I have also noticed that chanting of automaton patrols. Though I could never figure out what they said, it just started to sound more and more like a world war 2 era SS battalion in mech suits.

Very good. This is one of the deepest lore dives into Helldivers. I appreciate the effort you've put into this and enjoyed listening very much.
Thanks for listening! Thanks for the compliment, glad it dived deeper than most!
“Could you imagine the cries of millions if even one of these devices are used” Didn’t we just collapse a planet into a black hole?
It's only a war crime if *they* do it.
Yeah, a planet of freedom-hating bugs
Have the Illuminate ever even used said weapon?
@joeking3181
Keep talking like that, you'll be talking to my Democracy Officer soon.
You're always going to have a high casualty rates with those odds no matter how good your troops are
The training seems lax because we don't see most of it, but the reality of it is they've been training since early childhood.
That’s awesome
you can find that on automaton planets, i think its implied he killed a rocket devastor or regular one with the dual action shotgun and finishing it off with a shovel
I’ve seen one with a brood commander with a shovel stuck in it. Only one I haven’t seen with a shovel in its side or head is a charger. Almost all of those have a hellbomb in or next to them
I once found that same thing on a Automaton planet there was a dead solider and in front of him was a devastator with a shovel in its head.
Helldivers being first deployed to deal with rebels reminds me of Halo SPARTANs. They were both in their respective universes just before their governments needed them for a different purpose.
Yeah so many things about helldivers is just halo haha
They remind me much more to ODST's. Their nickname even is "Helljumpers"
36:20 I’d think it’s like the tomb of the unnamed soldier. It’s a place where all helldivers who died and were unrecoverable are paid respects to.
Ah yeah good thought!
It's on a bug planet. A legendary diver. It has a shovel and headstone. It's amazing
I believe the shovel is an old gaming reference. I think it references the shovel weapon in Warhammer 40k.
@@yarguswhetzyeah I'm sure it's a Death Korps of Krieg thing
shittiest tomb for the unnamed soldier that I've ever seen. Not even an eternal flame. Can't be it. Cool that you know what that is though, many don't these days.

If walking toasters with daddy issues and bugs that make my ship go vroom are right, then baby, I'm glad to be wrong.
Ready up that HELLPOD! ASAP.
It’s all just… too perfectly lined up
I would strongly encourage anyone who happens across this random comment to do some research on Supreme Commander
Can´t wait for the

My favorite part of Helldivers is it posits the entire human population is localized to Super Earth and we are using the vast majority of habitable planets for research purposes.
One might say the centralization of the population may be intentional as to better control the populace, I say why would anyone ever want to live anywhere but Super Earth!
TWENTY BILLION DEAD BUGS FOREVER
FOR SUPER EARTH FOR LIBERTY
38:52
Also just because we say the planet is 100% liberated doesnt mean its actually completely bug-less.
One day our grandchildren will look at Helldivers and say: "And to think that this used to be fiction".
"By the time I post this video, it's possible that the Helldivers have battled all the way there"
Meanwhile: SIR, THE AUTOMATONS HAVE ALMOST FINISHED TAKING OUR FORWARD COMMAND AND HAVE STARTED TO SPREAD TO THE NEIGHBOURING SECTOR! WE'RE BEING PUSHED TO RETREAT!
Back to the war front!
There's a theory that the shovel is a nod to Warhammer 40k as a fellow satire medium that they drew inspiration from.
Oh interesting, didn’t know that!
There are quite a few parallels between this and 40k, visually and lore wise. Great video 👍 @@VaultLore
Thanks and thanks for watching!!
Yeah it’s a good point!
Eyes firmly shut for managed democracy and super earth.

There's a spot on one of the Planets where you can see a Helldiver defeated died killing off an enemy while also digging a grave for a fellow diver.
I swear I've heard Beserker Automatons scream "For Super Earth!!" as they chase me with their chainsaw hands 😱😱😱

Oh good theory

This sounds ALOT like treason
We also have a whole empty sector of nothing going on in the bottom of the galaxy below Super Earth.

so basically we have to fight the worm from dune. If that enemy was added, i think it would be cool for a stratagem that drills into the ground and explodes.

What do we get from Greenland?
@@VaultLore I'd assume most of the stuff we have everywhere else, but buried under shit tons of ice. Makes sense it couldn't be harvested till now
@@VaultLore In our time, Greenland has a LOT of mineral deposits. From oil, to gold, to rare earth elements and strontium.
It makes sense that Greenland has these deposits, because they weren't exploited in the past.
Ah yeah, after we melted all the ice it was easy to get to. Makes sense
