Thank you Peter for the excellent videos on the 351W Build. My younger Bro, a mechanic, built a 351W for me back in 1983, for a XW GT Replica. It was a 4V 290HP from a ZC Fairlane, He scored a set of forged pistons and chrome moly rings, brand new, super cheap, and I think it ran about 10.5:1 comp, standard heads, with cast 4BBL Man, and Cast Exhausts, and a small cam. it ran a 600 vac 2nd Holley, with FMX auto. The damn thing could haul. From side by side standing start against a XY GT 351C auto, I would pull a car length in front, and stay there, till about 100MPH, then the 351C, would catch up. Of course this was at the drag strip. Pure torque!! Massive torque!!! You will enjoy that motor. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the videos! I’m getting ready to build a 351w for my wife’s ’67 Mustang. I’ll definitely be following your instructions. . .except without all the dog crap :)
Thanks Christopher, That car you had sounds brilliant I've never driven a 351W powered car so looking forward to it. Just unfortunate that the Weiand manifold I had was too high, but I have a Holley 600 here, so I will put it on. Had a few Cleveland powered cars, but prefered the Galaxies 390 just for the pure torque it had, even though a couple of the Clevo powered cars were quicker. I've been collecting loads of parts for the XW and I'm just about to get stuck into the rust repairs... always a drag until the body's done. Where the original 3.50 rear axel would work with the V8, just didn't want it screaming at 100km/h, which was the reason for the taller 2.92 ratio I was after. Thank's for the great comments mate, enjoy your Christmas and new year. Cheers Peter
Well done Pete, The little Winsor sounds great through my HiFi system. As always your work is impeccable. I'll be looking forward to the rest of your video's. Oh yeah by the way, I am rebuilding a dash cluster for a R31 Skyline made by VDO instruments Australia. Its going into my 01/01/1990 ( The date on the compliance place says New Years Day 1990) Nissan Skyline TI Sedan that I have been lucky to own since it was 4 years old. It has always been garaged and never driven in the rain. It is Nissan Classic White with dark blue crushed velour interior with black highlights. The Dash is black with all controls green backlit. The car was a custom order and first rego was 02/02/1990 here in Perth. The car has never been restored in anyway at all. As they say it is Totally Factory Stock. Thanks for the great video.
Love that sound! I'm going to be building a 351w for my F150 here in the states. Got some GT40P heads I'm rebuilding and will be putting in a 4x4 cam for good low end torque. I'm hoping it sounds just a good!
Great video and great job you have done to the engine!!! Could you please tell me the basic connection to make the same engine run. I am trying to make my 351W engine run. Please and thank you.
I've been watching your videos here there the last couple weeks, sounds nice, as far as axle goes I'd swap to 9in if I were you. I live in the states, in my opinion these engines are the best, I have a 97 f250(last yr of the 351w) with a 351w absolutely love it.
Beautiful engine my man. I'd give an arm and a leg for a engine that sexy to swap into my truck up here in the USA. You reminded me to, I need to one day build an engine stand for this sort of stuff. Might do it a touch more mad max style, have it hanging by a chain and running in at some wilder RPM's.. Course that'd be after the cam is broke in and I've confirmed it won't lunge a Rod clean into my leg. All in good fun and proper build up brother.
Hi there I'm binge watching all your excellent vids in this XW series. and lovin it. I was wondering if you have a video on how you build this engine stand or any info on how it is set up? Cheers
They were old F-series truck manifolds... weighed a ton and were quite restrictive - more so than stock 302 ones. I bought them off eBay, then sold them off soon after this video was made, cheers.
Hi Peter, Thank you once again for your very interesting and informative videos. We did'nt have teachers like you when I went to Tech. but that was nearly 50 years ago. Keep up the good work, hope you have time over the summer break to continue with your projects, make sure you have some wine for Sue !! that's what I do when I'm in my garage with my toys. Best Regards, Gary.
Thanks Gary, I dare say there will be more video's sooner than later, just hopeful that they don't wear their welcome out... I'm glad you like them. I've been collecting parts for the XW, the 14/56 and doing some work on the Fairlane as time and family commitments permit. As we speak, Suzie is having a glass of wine. Thanks again mate. Peter
Hi mate, great job, good to see a big air cleaner. I dont have to ask when you fit the engine to the car about your radiator shroud. Theres only one thing better than the sound of a v8 and thats another one .
love the videos Peter. i agree with the stands. iv just put a 351c into a 82 LTD and after 20mins of driving it the rear main started to leak. so now its engine out again. just in your opinion do you like the windsor or the clevo motors, i say the clevos as the manifold does not control any coolant flow so its every easy to work on and do changes etc
I'm a Cleveland fan... had quite a few of them now, but I picked the Windsor for this car as it's a little different and period correct for the year of the car. Thanks for the great comments. Cheers Peter
Thanks for your videos. I have a 351 Windsor 5.8 and it's only running in 4 cylinders. Looking on the distributor top the # 1 no working, 3 yes, 7 no, 2 yes, 6 no, 5 yes, 4 no, 8 yes. I have the correct firing order but I can remove the 4 wire plugs for the 1-7-6-4 and still running good, but when I put it on drive it doesn't has any power the all. Any ideas? Thanks.
Would suggest for more power and efficiency to put a dual plane manifold on with 2V heads, 2V heads for street cars has been proven to run better at lower rev ranges and the dual plane allows you to run at least a 650 vacuum secondaries 4 barrel
Hi Peter, astonishing work, can you help me a little bit, i have a 351W EFI 1990, a f350 truck manual transmission, so i have a lot of problems with sensors and ECU issues, so i whant to swap it to carb, and of course i have in mind to use a HEI distribuitor and buy the lower intake manifold with carb, my question is if it´s possible, i need to change another parts, like heads or cams, what jets and intake-carb kit do you recommend, thanks for your help.
Thanks Peter. I have a 351W-4 barrel I need to rebuild for my 1969 Cougar. This helps. If you feel like coming to California, can you come on over and lend a hand? ;)
The block is early 1974, taller deck height for smog - the reason I hunted for the right pistons to raise the compression height to gain good compression.
Amazing videos! I watched all of them because im looking to buy a 351 Windsor for my ford ranger that we are trying to make into a prerunner. I was just curious what the total cost for the build was? Including machining and parts. And was this a step by step engine rebuild series or did you leave out some steps along the way while rebuilding this engine? Again amazing videos and very informative. Thank you so much
Thanks Karen, So glad you liked them. The condition of the block was good, so it didn't need to be rebored, although I changed the pistons to raise the compression - it was initially a mid seventies low spec smog motor. Raising compression and dialling in a new high performance cam will really wake these things up - provided the cam you choose is compatible with the rest of the engine specs. I still need to fit a good intake and Holley carburettor, but that can be done later - I really need to concentrate on the rest of the car now. If you need to get a lot of machine work done, the price will increase. This motor cost a whisker under $3000, but really should have been just under $2500, because I doubled up on some items and bought some expensive parts that I didn't need. Thanks again for your positive comments. Cheers Pete
Peter Anderson When you changed out the pistons, did you have the machine shop balance them to your rotating assembly? I've got a 1994 351 roller block with factory cast dish pistons and will be swapping them out for some speed pro hyper flat tops with 4 valve reliefs and would like to know if major re-balancing is required? Awesome motor by the way!
only the real early 351w had 16 intake bolts they stopped that right around 1973 I have a date of C9 4bb stock intake and heads dated D0 they both have 16 intake bolts
hey Peter how's it going, I'm doing the exact same engine build as you, just curious the year of my engine is a 1979 it rated at 143hp at the time, which was pretty sad considering its a 351w, how much gain do you think id get with the same exact build as yours ? I was told the bottom end is capable of holding 500hp plus, but I'm not really looking for that really, but I sure want a little more kick to it with at least between the 250 to 300hp area, any suggestions would be great and info on your cylinder heads what have you don to them ? my engine's a D9AE, it'll be going into a 1984 f-150, if I can keep the stock crank and connecting rods that'll be even better, let me know what you think :) thanks
I'm sorry didn't mean to be critical at all just helpful. that one gasket I saw could have been made to work for both type heads but would block of some of the water passage at best
Windsor's are not like a 302 Windsor is like to run a little bit warm 302 likes to run cool but the Windsor definitely likes to run a little warm it performs better
Nice job - thanks for explaining all the detail work that often does not get done and shortens the life of the engine.
My first car - 1972 LTD had a 351W. Great engine.
As soon as you hit that starter for the first time, I bet every1 who viewed this had an instant smile.
Yup.
I did to.

Thank you for the series video's on the 351 Peter and she sounds great ! We are getting ready to pull one apart & rebuild in a Ford Ranchero .
Sounds great!
Thanks for all your info, it's helping me with my rebuild, of a 69 351w alot. I'm going to put engine in a 66 Fairlane, with a c6 auto transmission..
It sound so sweet , you did an awesome job, Peter love that engine tester stand I really like the way you explain you work ,thank you for posting
Thanks for all the great talk! Just about to restore a 351w and it's been great to watch what you have done. Keep it up👍
+Jimmy eklöf Thanks Jimmy.
Nice. Good job.
I have bought a 1979 Ford LTD here in Germany. He has the same engine 351 cui Windsor. Greetings from Germany
Great Vid! Thanks for sharing. I'm doing an in-frame freshening up of mine now. I hope mine can look and run nearly as nice as yours
Great video! I can tell you know what you're talking about and I enjoyed hearing about your 351 build!
kick ass!!! i love the 351 sounds awesome! good video
Sounds great music to my ears
I love your motor stand that thing is the cat's meow the motor looks really good good job
Great torque from these 351 Windsor engines
Sure are, but not quite like the old 390, cheers.
Thanks for the videos! I’m getting ready to build a 351w for my wife’s ’67 Mustang. I’ll definitely be following your instructions. . .except without all the dog crap :)

nice stand deffintly a good investment
Great video and great job you have done to the engine!!! Could you please tell me the basic connection to make the same engine run. I am trying to make my 351W engine run. Please and thank you.
At first start no drama at all which was what I expected. Fired instantly.
Pete... also should mention, we were running 2:92 302 V8 Diff, the XYGT ran 3:25 9".
Just about ready to fire my 400 up for the first time. Hope it sounds as good
6.6 litres mate, an animal indeed!

Bro your videos are awesome
great video
Great job. I want to do the same to my 69 351w and stick it in my 68 f-100. About 290 hp. Factory rated. Came out of a 69 mustang.
Hi Peter, just wondering if you would be happy to share the measurements of your engine run stand and maybe some detailed pictures.
Hi there I'm binge watching all your excellent vids in this XW series. and lovin it. I was wondering if you have a video on how you build this engine stand or any info on how it is set up? Cheers
the sticker you have on the valve cover were did you get that? The Ford 351 M working on was painted over. thanks for your help
I want that V8 351 in my Subaru
Where do I find set headers like them b perfect for a build I'm doing!!?!?
They were old F-series truck manifolds... weighed a ton and were quite restrictive - more so than stock 302 ones. I bought them off eBay, then sold them off soon after this video was made, cheers.
hey hi sir. I couldn't tell by looking at the head but the gasket you are using is for a 16 bolt type intake and head most are 12 bolt
Hi Peter, Thank you once again for your very interesting and informative videos. We did'nt have teachers like you when I went to Tech. but that was nearly 50 years ago. It's all some engines were provided with for lower performance applications and trucks etc

Is the 5.0 better than the 5.8 opinion
Whats the plug gap to the 351w i have same motor but in my boat
Corey Couch .035
Does it go fast
I need you to come look at my barn find 351w :P
the first intake gasket looked like like the right one but the last one just looked wrong

only the real early 351w had 16 intake bolts they stopped that right around 1973 I have a date of C9 4bb stock intake and heads dated D0 they both have 16 intake bolts
I had a 351 windser and Cleveland the windser is cheaper to build up cause the 351 c are very rare
Windsor, not Windser.

I would assume it was rated at Net power and not the actual HP which should be somewhere around 250
Could you do a video on building the engind stand , please. Thank you and God bless.
What,s with the gloves man
Yup.
you do have a 12 bolt intake hope you didn't mix up a 12 bolt intake with a 16 bolt head
Bone stock, but beautiful!
I'm sorry didn't mean to be critical at all just helpful. that one gasket I saw could have been made to work for both type heads but would block of some of the water passage at best
wha wha bleat mone mone are you for real?
that gasket looks like the wrong one it sure looks like a 16 bolt and your engine is a 12
it's could be a gasket made for both by looking at it as close as I can but I see a 16 bolt hole
Windsor's are not like a 302 Windsor is like to run a little bit warm 302 likes to run cool but the Windsor definitely likes to run a little warm it performs better
stop your winging its all your fault! !!!!!
Sooooo human error, not engines fault.
