Jane Hedengren's dad was quite a distance-running star at BYU a couple decades ago. Jane's NXN race was crazy good. I thought Elizabeth Leachman had a great race to finish 3rd. She's been battling injuries since the summer and missed a lot of training for the fall cross country season. Hats off to all the girls who ran that course. It wasn't a race for wimps.
Great update Coach Rob. BYU must be soo excited. Coach Kevin - former head coach of Georgian Bay Coyotes [2010-2020] - coached the 2004 Canadian Jr. XC Champion from our little town of 4400 people.
Jane Henegren has always been a phenom from day one. I was at her very first cross 5k when she was a freshman and she stunned everyone beating a number of the top Utah runners. Her dad and coach were really careful in terms of making sure she wasn’t burned out by her senior year. Jane is the best female runner for her class.
I was a competitor of Charlie when he lived in Ohio. He wasn’t the fastest of our grade during underclass years, but this guy had charisma, grit, and dare I say wisdom to be a national champion at the collegiate level. Honestly just a standup guys and really genuine dude. His accomplishment is absolutely insane, but knowing him, I can’t say I was too surprised to see him taking the crown.
Jane Hedengren’s performance not a surprise. While she has been plagued with injuries and illness throughout her four years of cross-country, a few weeks ago, she finally felt healthy and like herself. That’s when she ran in the state championship where she’s a three time winner but won by 60 seconds. At the Western regional meet, her performance was just as ridiculous. It was on a cross country course that was mostly golf course, where she ran a time of 15 minutes and 50 seconds, which is the best cross country time for a 5.1 mile course for a high school cross country girl ever. But courses differ wildly so that isn’t a good measure. The good measure is that she did this beating last year‘s NX and champion by 41 seconds. Then at nationals, this is arguably the best field ever and she beat them all by 40 seconds. It may not be a record coach Rob, but that difference will likely never be improved upon.
Jane was sick and had just gotten out of the ER/urgent care the night before Brooks PR 3200 this June. She still took a second place against Allie Zealand. She was still not well later that week when she won the NON 1600. It doesn’t require hills to develop grit. Her brother runs for BYU, Her father was a 6 time all American, and she took about 7th place at AAU nationals in 8th grade. She won brooks PR mile against the best Juniors and seniors when she was just a sophomore, clocking a time of 435. She has also run that at 4500 feet elevation. That’s another form of grit you may not get on the East Coast. I grew up running cross country through woods and over logs and over little streams, we loved/hated the hills and bad weather. But I think Jane is the greatest of this generation and will do well running with Zarriel Machia at BYU next year!
Hedengren is truly an amazing runner but Leachman is a special talent. Leachman qualified for the Olympic trials as a HS sophmore! Now a two time Footlocker champ! I look forward to watching them both compete against each other in the upcoming indoor season and then outdoors. Last year was a great rivalry.
Charlie was so strong looking finishing that race. One thing I would note is how much time lapsed between the WIAA Washington state race, NXR Northwest wrapped to NXN. I think it spelled doom for Owen Powell especially since he had no teammates qualify.
I've been watching Jane's progress over the last couple of years on her dad's channel. She was always fast, but her improvement and her drive to be the best is very impressive.
Vause is a powerful looking athlete and I hope he has a quality development program to now pick up on his obvious talent, he looks to me to be a more 1500-5000mt guy with that body type. Jane Hedengren...what can you say but "Super Star" at this level, and, what have they got here!!!...BYU Coach is outstanding, so going to an awesome program no doubt, but how do you imagine is the best way ahead, steady easy or let her push herself or even train with the guys???.... I look at her as the next Valby but might have more pace, anyway I will be tuning in for more!
like College preview. But then that lineup changes in college years. Then also what will happen during the Footlocker Nationals. This NXN messes up with some of those athletes potential for that race
CORRECTION: Prior to the NCAA administering women’s athletics (including XC) starting in 1981, NC State actually won 2 national Championships under the auspices of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (in 1979 and 1980). By 1982, the AIAW ceased administering collegiate sports for women and the NCAA was the only governing body left.
Up until now, I had considered Jane Hedengren as Utah's star runner, just a cut below California's best. Last year at Arcadia, she challenged Sadie Englehardt on the last lap of the Invitational Mile then got promptly dusted by the Venturan who had been dominant for two years in that event. Rylee Blade beat her at Woodbridge, so up until this NXN, she had been nipping at their heels. Now she's broken through, setting up what could be a very interesting track season. Another one to watch is Holly Barker from Trabuco Hills. She finished 14th at NXN, just three spots behind Sadie Englehardt. Though she hasn't been consistently at the top, she has turned in some impressive wins in key races and has said in interviews that she's made some mental breakthroughs. Hedengren has been on a very impressive performance arc this year. Let's see how it carries over to track season.
Odd conditions can often produce extremely odd results. On a normal day the winner would not contend but on this day he caught the perfect conditions and thrived. Very similar to Yuchi Kawaichi winning Boston in 2016. Would prefer to see a normal day with good footing but the race was won and Charlie will forever be NXN Champ. It will be interesting to see if he can step up and compete on a normal day now that he has that huge confidence building win.
Thanks Coach Rob,,, friendly suggestion? make inspirational "short-videos" with no background music so i can use your wisdom & voice in future running songs.... maybe? make shorts on running-motivation & psychology.... (I'll make you famous ha ha) Thanks again
Congrats to Jane, but the one to watch is Elizabeth Leachman. Losing close to 3 months training because of injury and cardiac issues and still finishing 2nd at NXN is phenominal. Don't forget, she ran 15:25 at 5000 as a Sophomore.
Cross country is about rain, sleet, snow, hills, trails, puddles, and mud, not hard-packed dirt and well-cared-for green lawns. The tracksters who run fast on smooth flat surfaces in warm dry weather aren't necessarily the ones who can compete when it's cold and grey and the footing is ridiculous.
Right, and some of these distance boys/girls who are better at the difficult races but are not the fastest now as of the mid 2000's go on to pro level trail ultra running/trail careers winning events who are paid by a few companies to run being pro or nearly pro sponsored to run full time. Before you had Pros being more like a Semi-Pro in the 1990's with the Ultra Running having maybe a single sponsor or 2, rarely a full on pro athlete/almost pro basically getting for free some items for races.

Hendengren had a number of injuries and sickness as well and didn’t train for two months

@@maritwelker-fc8gx her time at nationals was a record , she beat tuhoy’s time by 5 seconds

Jane ran a 15:50.01 XC 5K. That was stated to have been the fastest HS 5K ever.
For a women/girl in high school.
Elizabeth Leachman won Footlocker today, but the other top dogs weren't there.

Its nice to see sports wins enjoyed on a straightforward way. If this was cycling there would be a bunch of negative comments.
Jane will join my son's (coach at Hinsdale Central HS) former runner Aden Bandekwala at Duke. Aden was a 2x state champ in the 1600 and in XC. Cool!

Absolutely! 12 to 15 American HS girls starting college are going to be fun to watch.

It was 2018 not 2016 when Yuchi won the Boston in that horrible rainy windy day.
100 creakings as a prank is brutal 🤣

Anyone remember Julia Stamps?

they need to unify the XC champs... nxn vs kinney (yes i still call it kinney)
she...
I thought Jane did get the national record
In the 5k. The two seperate records talked about here were the 3mile record and the nxn course record
