    Zenyatta 09 Classic, Great Communicator in 88 turf , & Precisionist in 85 sprint.
    Plus the most unforgettable Go For Wand going down while beating Bayakoa in 90
    Races I will Never Forget!

    Whever compiled this wasn't in Florida in 1989. The whole city of Ft. Lauderdale was talking about the race between Easy Goer and Sunday Silence. You'd get on a bus and the driver would say, "Who do you like?" Standing in a line at a drug store somebody would ask the same thing. There were banners everywhere and when Easy Goer began to make his move like Neil Diamond sang, "the whole valley would shake."
    It was by far the most-anticipated B.C. race in the events history. But, again, if you weren't there you have no idea of what it was like--and I've been to a bunch of these things.
    Hell, even Pebbles winning the turf race in 1985 at Aqueduct was more exciting and remarkable than some of these.

    Its crazy how Arazi could not be number 1 on this list.No 2 year old in the history of the breeders cup,or in the history of Thoroughbred racing ever produced such a devastating run.

    1989 Classic was such a Great Race...Easy Goer had absolutely "Everything" going against him Heading into the race and during the race...Closed to only miss by a "Neck" at the Wire was Very impressive under all the Circumstances...He was the "Best" Horse in the race...Easy Goer is probably the Most Unlucky Great Horse in History...Only "13" days rest heading into Derby and caught a Muddy Surface on same Track he disliked...Pinned on rail Entire stretch in Preakness to come up short a "Nose"...Easy Goer had the Natural Talent to be a Top 5 all time Horse...That Belmont Stakes Performance was just Electrifying...NY was the only state in the Country that did not allow race days drugs also...Connections also Entered him in the Met Mile off only a little over "10" days rest while giving a Ton of weight to rest of Field...Connections were Greedy with Easy Goer trying to Win every NY race possible including a "12" Furlong" event the race before the Classic...They should have Skipped that Race and just let the Horse rest up more heading into Classic...He suffered through career ankle problems...Easy Goer...What could have been...Still had a Great brilliant career though...1989 Gotham Performance should be in a Video Museum somewhere

    I think the Arazi race was the most dominent but how could you agrue with Personal Ensign's race. The fact Arazi was only 2 is just amazing.

    If they're talking moments, then I'd have thought Dayjur's jump, and Swain going walkabout should be included.

    • @chrispafrieddreams9118
      @chrispafrieddreams9118 3 роки тому

      One got me a winner, one lost me a probable one. I had safely kept, enough said. Silver Charm was in front, more importantly, in the good part of the track, then Stevens steers Silver Charm out to follow Swain, then, most importantly, opened the hole up for the winner. I had $400 to win at 5/2 yes, it still stings a little bit..

    EVERYTHING was against Easy Goer coming into the 89 Classic and During the 89 Classic and EVERYTHING was in Sunday Silences favor...All the Circumstances and on that Speed favoring track and only coming up Short a Neck at the Wire Closing was very Disappointing...Easy Goer was The Best Horse in that race...He was also training so poorly that the connections debated scratching him as his ankles were flaring up...But how could they ever scratch in such a Big race...Easy Goer was a Very unlucky and unfortunate Horse with all the Talent in the world

    Old Friends is a nonprofit equine retirement facility in Georgetown, Kentucky. It is the only thoroughbred retirement facility in the United States that accepts stallions.
    The facility was inspired by the death of 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand, and created in 2002 by Michael Blowen who runs it almost entirely from donations and also Exceller fund was inspired by Exceller, anyway i thought of telling you the whole story. RIP Eceller and Ferdinand forever in the memory of many!

    I remember the 2003 Turf -- but to be fair, the most amazing part of it, for me, was how freakin long it took for them to finally declare the dead heat. I think Johar and High Chaparral had to walk around in circles (to cool down and not cramp up) while awaiting the results for ten or fifteen minutes. It was absurd. And Falbrav came sooooo close to making it a triple dead heat, too.

    This top ten list is spot on, with one exception. I would remove the Arazi race and replace it with the 1990 Breeders Cup Distaff. The duel between Bayakoa and Go For Wand was breathtaking, with a tragic ending.

    Oh remember when the Breeder's Cup was meant to be a meeting of champions? Remember when they had to overcome a new track or mud or cold? Remember when they didn't run nearly every year at Santa Anita.... So many of these moments took place over off tracks, champions are meant to overcome all odds not just win because it's what is expected. A depressing end to what could have been the scene of some of the greatest racing the world has ever seen.

    • @chrispafrieddreams9118

      I think we just had 2 yrs. Churchill, 1 Keenland, with a Santa Anita, somewhere in between. Funny Keenland was a gorgeous warm day last year, had a cold winter storm in the west. But just BV the time of year, it shod be out west 3 of 4. Monmouth was a swamp, so was lone stars turf course. Churchill muddy about 50%

    Phar Lap was long ago dead. Citation was dead. Spectacular Bid was retired.

      @Lloyd Bonafide Horses don't know what phony means. Only people can be phony. And Andrew Beyer is a first class phony . She won every race she enterred but one, and most people, including me, believe she would have beaten Blame in 99 out of 100 races. She had very unfortunate luck in her race. Remember Man O' War lost a race because he was facing backward when the race began.

    On July 11, 2011, thoroughbred Deputy Broad ran his last race at the Mountaineer track in W. Virginia. He came in last, and labored throughout. Two days later, he was sold to a kill middleman at Mountaineer by his owner/trainer Danny Bird for a few dollars. Then taken to a kill buyer who had a contract with Richelieu slaughterhouse in Canada. A few days later, Deputy Broad was slaughtered at Richelieu. He was only six years old and never had a second chance. From track to plate in a week

    It amazes me how little race fans like you know.Arazi should be number one on several grounds.He had the worst draw,which gave the yanks an advantage.He was the widest margin winner,he travelled from Europe,which gave the yanks an advantage.He was sired by the great Blushing Groom but most pertinent;he was tiny! He was around two hands smaller than Bertrando but gave that horse around 20 pound beating.Clever people bet on big horses because they're at a distinct advantage.Arazi defied physics !

    McCarron said the 1989 Classic was the 1 Race over all others in his career that he felt "he" Won the Race by using "Tactics" aboard Sunday Silence to get to the Wire 1st...Watching that Race most would agree...Pat Day however thought Easy Goer was going to Win no matter how he rode him and McCarron taught him a very valueable lesson...Pat Day was always Spoiled aboard Easy Goer and never respected any other Horse or Field

    Aiden O`Brien is quite unconventional.In the old days an unbeaten record was protected but he has no problem placing his horses in races they can`t win.In any other stable George Vancouver,Mars and Christopher Columbus would each be a mini superstar but hes happy running all 3 in 2000 Guineas.G.Washington was special and, as well as a good looker,his form with Sir Percy stands up to scrutiny.Percy`s career was ended by habitual back problems.So You Think was a stunning looker too.Take a look!

    Worst was the 1989 Classic...Worst is because Easy Goer should have won that race as the heavy 1-2 favorite...Pat Day moved up on the back stretch to sit right behind Sunday Silence...Jock under Sunday Silence knows he has to move around the turn with such a short Gulfstream stretch...He makes his move and Pat Day just SITS there aboard Easy Goer and waits and waits instead of moving when Sunday Silence moved...Easy Goer should have been right at Sunday Silences throat latch heading in the stretch...instead Pat Day leaves Easy Goer with so much to do and so much ground to make up in the short stretch and loses by a NECK...Hard to forgive that ride

    "Sunday Silence holds on and he wins by a desperate neck."
    Seriously? This comment bothers me every single goddamned time I hear it. Had he held on by a desperate neck, he would've crossed the finish line being whipped until he reached the finish line, really giving his all. It's obvious that SS's jockey just let him go home in a hand ride and Easy Goer plainly and simply couldn't get to him.

    • @timgregory2393
      @timgregory2393 8 років тому

      Easy Goer passed him after the wire. Therefore, you could say that the lead was "desperate" because Easy Goer would have won if the line was moved back 30 feet.

    • @the-golden-paw9759
      @the-golden-paw9759 8 років тому +1

      Tim Gregory Of course Easy Goer would have passed him eventually, but Sunday Silence's jockey didn't push him to any more than that neck. He could have held on by - let's say - a length or so, too. It's not just a "desperate neck", it's more a "desperate whatsoever the jockey knows he's got it, but a couple meters more and they fade".

    • @DELMARCLUB1
      @DELMARCLUB1 8 років тому +2

      +C-Fox SS officially won driving - officially by DRF (Racing Form). Driving in the DRF glossary defintions means strong urging by the rider. The official margin was a neck in this race. Clearly, it was a very rapidly diminishing neck, as Easy Goer blew by at the wire. The official DRF chart notes SS won "driving" (strong urging). McCarron was told not to hit the horse by his trainer due to his disdain for being whipped (as well as weaving tendencies) - though in some races like the Preakness & Belmont SS handled being whipped ok. But what did he do for it to be driving (strong urging)? He was repeatedly & continuously asking him (driving - strong urging) to run by throwing crosses (flicking & swooping with the reins, cross reining), and poking him (as McCarron said in the Blood Horse Nov. 11, 1989 and LA Times Nov. 5, 1989 articles) on his shoulder, and showing him the whip with his left hand. McCarron stated the horse was running all out at his top speed and doing the best he could & he was just trying to keep him straight as well - because he was lugging in a bit as well. McCarron said, "He was running FULL OUT for the last three sixteenths of a mile (which in the entire home stretch at Gulfstream). Easy Goer was really flying the last eighth." Hence, as he said, the poking him on the left shoulder, the showing him the whip on the left side, and the throwing crosses, cross reining, and the flicking and swooping with the reins. In the 1989 Belmont, Day actually did whip EG a few times at the top of the stretch, then hand rode him the entire last eighth of a mile while widening to win by 8 lengths. The chart noted he won ridden out in the Belmont. Ridden out (1989 Belmont) is much less vigorous riding than the strong urging of driving (1989 BCC). I am not even going to get into the ride by Pat Day in the BCC, which was very similar to Pat Day rides on Forty Niner (1988 Derby), Seeking the Gold (1988 Travers, BCC, & Haskell), Menifee (1999 Derby), Timber Country (1995 Derby), Turkoman (1986 BCC), Surfside (1999 BC Juv Fillies), Heavenly Prize (1994 BC Distaff), Java Gold (1987 JCGC) , and many others.

    yeah hard to argue any of these, im sure everyone has their personal favorites, being from Canada, seeing Dance Smartly, Sky Classic, Chief Bearhart, even Regal Classic in the juvenile finishing second or maybe our most underrated horse With Approval just getting beat in the Turf....I do think that Inside Informations Distaff win goes under the radar for some reason, she CRUSHED a great group of mares the like of which never happens, if Arazis crush is there so should Inside Infos, imo.

    In the summer of 2006, the New York Owners and Breeders' Association, based in Saratoga Springs, New York, initiated the small voluntary per-race charge (collected from owners of NY Breeds) called the "Ferdinand Fee" that will funnel the revenue to Bluegrass Charities and the Thoroughbred Charities of America, two organizations that help fund race horse rescue and retirement groups. Another small step in maintaining the safety of Thoroughbreds sent to breeding sheds around the world:

    Arazi's amazing race is a Breeder's Cup classic. I am not trying to downplay Arazi at all. He was a great 2-year-old who had some physical problems as a 3-year-old, and yes he was small just like his grandsire, Northern Dancer. Arazi was also bred in the USA.

    I have a great appreciation of overseas racing. My all-time favorite was "George Washington", who was perhaps the most beautiful thoroughbred I have ever seen (hence his nickname of "Gorgeous George"). When he broke down during the Breeder's Cup Classic back in 2007, it shocked me to my core. I still wonder why Aiden O'Brien ran GW on a sloppy dirt track that day. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that GW had been previously retired, was found to be infertile, and was then un-retired?

    No doubt about it the race with Sunday silence and Easy Goer the race of the decade. The first Classic is a close second. Please don't mention Personal Ensign race as top race, they labored home .

    @TicinoParadise yeah the only reason I love with approval is he race better than Izvestia down south....same with Peteski, Peteski beat the Belmont winner and the Derby winner (sea hero) in the same race at woodbine..but with approval set a track record at belmont i think in the bowling green (maybe wrong)...but anyway nice chatting with you and bringing back the great canadian memories :)

    in 2002 Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners. He likely became either pet food or steaks for human consumption, another gr8t champion horse that had the same horrific end was Exceller he was taken to a slaughterhouse and killed for meat.

    i'm sorry but zennyatta should be on this top.
    I never saw a horse sitting on the back of the race like she did

    Good vid although I was sorry to see excluded (especially) the '96 Classic and the 1994 Juvenile Fillies which seems to have made nobody's list yet produced one of the greatest races ever. I would use them to replace the '84 Classic (exciting as hell but poorly run) and the 95 Classic (I understand a need to honor Cigar, but his winning that race was not big deal).
    But thanks for the memories

    3600 horses since 2009 have died in racing or training incidents. Yet in that same time period (three years), it's estimated that 60,000 thoroughbreds from the U.S. have gone to slaughter. I

    It's too bad this list wasn't made a year later. Zenyetta in the 09 Classic would have made it easily.

    Only Pat Day would keep his 1-2 favorite horse 10+ behind on the far turn on such a speed/pace favoring racetrack like gulfstream with such a short stretch...Easy Goer should have won this race easily...Missing by a neck is disgusting...

    if not for the superior talents of Randy Paul Romero, the great mare doesn't win that race....RP gets her going even though she was NOT handling the surface at all...you could see Personal Ensign struggling with the footing.....Romero's brilliance won this race

    #4 was about as fiddled as it gets, clear winner was High Chaparral....People have long argued this but never mind. Lester Piggott's victory in the 1990 Breeders Cup Mile on Royal Academy should have made the list, the man was 54 at the time & it was a scintillating ride. Poor music but good watch.

    @TicinoParadise The Ladies could be very itneresting if both Blind Luck and Havre de Grace run. The Classic could be interesting if either or both of the ladies run there. Like you, I am looking forward to Goldi #4.
