Tiznow is number 1. Only horse to win twice. Plus in New York 6 weeks after 9/11 leading to the greatest race call ever. I loved Zenyatta and Cigar, but for a race fan "Tiznow wins it for America" may never be beat.
Frankie Detroit said when he was riding Sakhee down the stretch he suddenly felt this dinosaur of a horse loom up alongside him, that was the legendary Tiznow coming.. he beat both Giant Causeway and Sakhee two truly great horses in monumental stretch runs.. An amazingly tough and talented horse. Heart pounding to this day to watch that duel with Sakhee.
I think, even though she lost, Zenyatta's second run at the Classic was my favorite, she made up so much ground to just barely lose and she was closing like a freight train, I was so impressed with her effort, just sad the race wasn't like a foot longer.
I was there at Churchill, and she was unbelievable! I wanted to cry when she came up short. She had a really rough start, didn't like the dirt in her face, and had a difficult time finding her stride. At one point she had to have been at least 18 lengths back. To come back from that in the biggest World Championship race, and only miss the win by a nose? Absolutely remarkable. It's the best race she ever ran, despite the fact she lost. I agree with you, she deserves a bit more respect.
@WonderDrugEchinacea Not saying this race was the best Breeders' Cup race, just my favorite race of hers. I really do love Calidoscopio but my favorite horse ever to watch was Ghostzapper who ran the fastest BC Classic to date.
While I completely agree Calidescope's win was very impressive, you need to look at these two races again. He was never. 30 lengths back. The announcer said 10 lengths off the lead at his furthest point back. I think it was probably closer to 14. Remarkable win either way, he passed the rest and won pulling away. Brilliant horse!
@WonderDrugEchinacea I didn't delete anything, UA-cam glitch? You're absolutely entitled to your opinion, I just don't think you can compare a two mile race to a mile and a quarter race, that's all. Thanks for the conversation! You had me looking back on a great horse and I'm always happy to do that!
Zenyatta proved herself in defeat. She never really traveled before and you could see her not liking the footing most of the race. To come through that the way she did was amazing. Not every horse loses something in defeat (also look at Songbird vs Beholder in 2016 Breeders Cup Distaff)
Many of these horses and editions of the BC are legendary, but the only one I watched live on TV was Zenyatta coming up short by a head to Blame. You can literally hear people screaming like the world was coming to an end in the stands as Zenyatta was trying to close the gap with Blame down the stretch after being 18 lengths behind early in the race. I was huge fan of Zenyatta and always will be...and this is her greatest race she ever ran even after being unbeaten in the first 19 of her career.
Sunday Silence winning in 1989 to take 3 outta 4 against Easy Goer is the greatest Breeders Cup race. Not just because of the horses involved, but because of the race itself, which was sheer awesome and had one of the best race calls of all time.
Easy Goer had everything against him coming into that race and during the race as SS had everything in his favor...GREAT race but the Better Horse Lost by a Neck in my opinion...Easy Goer was Sluggish throughout and did not do any running at all until Mid stretch on a speed favoring track...Closing to lose by a Neck at the wire is unforgivable by the Jock....He also broke slow out of the gate with the horse...Nothing went right for Easy Goer...Connections also should have Skipped the 12 Furlong Jock Club before the Classic and let Easy Goer rest up more off that Grueling campaign...They discussed scratching him from the Classic cause he was Training Poorly....Whittingham did a Tremendous Training Job with SS
Oh come on Zenyatta’s 2009 win is the greatest ever! Last to first, she came from double digits back, only mare to win the classic. Alphabet Soup upsetting Cigar that has to make the top 10
It was a sad day when the horseracing community found that Cigar was infertile and he would never breed..... just think about it tho, the Colts and fillies he could've brought into this world with his bloodline!
It is sad, but AP Indy's breeding almost makes up for it. All that Bold Ruler/Nasrullah blood on both sides, Man o' War, and a bit of Native Dancer's bloodline brought in through Somethingroyal, who appears TWICE in Indy's pedigree - something you don't see very often.
Yeah, but even on his best day with a perfect trip (which he had) he would never run a mile and a half in under 2:26, so he never would have won the triple crown with Easy Goer in the race.
The best was the race between Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, a combine 34:23-10-1 and arguably two triple crown winner who ran into each other plus the best Béyers of 124 for a Classic.
Zenyatta gets my bid for first and second. Her 2009 race was unbelievable but 2010 against an even more loaded field of males she made up 18 lengths behind from the backstretch and overcame being held up by Quality Road at the final turn and still was running Blame to the ground and would have passed him the next step past the wire and would have kept going! She beat every male she faced and just needed a better ride in 2010 to knock Blame out. I still feel sad as it was said Zenyatta seemed confused as she was led back to the paddock instead of the winners circle! She had never lost before in 20 races.
I was alright until your #1. The "Midnight Classic"- Alysheba winning in the dark, on a sloppy Churchill Downs track that he did not care for, and becoming the richest horse at that time. Definitely a way better race than Curlin's.
My personal Classic favorites: 1) Zenyatta 2009- for a filly/mare to win the Classic was monumental-considering her running style,- Trevor Denman's "This is Un-Be-Lievable!". Goosebumps. 2) Blame/Zenyatta 2010- Mike Smith left her too much to do but she almost pulled it off! Heartbreak. 3) Tiznow/Sahkee 2001- "Tiznow wins it for America" Tom Durkins call says it all. Back to Back Classics. 4)Cigar 1995- The Incomparable, Invincible, Unbeatable Cigar. The horse that made me fall in love with horse racing.
She is 17.2 hands high, which is actually more typical of draft horses than thoroughbreds! Taller than Secretariat, American Pharoah, Justify, Man O' War, and most other thoroughbred champions!
I was fine.. until Ferdinand.... I burst into tears.... I still can't deal with what they did to him.... it broke my heart.... and I couldn't follow the sport again for many years......
Ferdinand was my favorite and I was there at Hollywood Park for that race! I also can't deal with what they did to him-he gave the Sport all that he could! The race should of been #1 NOT #4 the field was packed with Champions and had the 2 Kentucky Derby winners and 3 Classic winners together!!
Cigar..one of the greatest horses to ever wear hair...and of course I must include Ghostzapper ( the best ever from 6f to 1/14) in that rare air who blew away and wired the greatest field ever assembled in the Breeders in 1:59 and change winning horse of the year over Smarty Jones in 2004.
Arcangues in 1993! Despite the surprise for American punters the horse wins very easily. The jockey had not asked anything Arcangues before the last meters and when he decides to ask his horse he easily exceeds everyone! Arcangues would have won at least 10 lengths if Bayley had wanted to start earlier but he did not know his horse and only thought to follow and finish among the last. Then in the last corner, Bayley realized that his French horse unknown to the Americans was far superior to all the others .... This extraordinary acceleration of this very good European horse (beating Arazi the best 2 years in history when they were 2 years old) made all the public mute and this race will remain legendary because the American bettors learned that day never to underestimate a foreigner and better inquire about him .... 133-1 ??? 10-1 was the logical maximum ahahahahah
He beat a very weak field and Bertrando could not race 1 1/4 miles. He maxed out at 1 1/8. The trainer said he had a wrenched back and had difficulty on the hilly turf courses, but might appreciate dirt racing due to the flat surface. Still a shocker.
Alyshebas win in 88' my favorite, but ill never forget the very 1st one-- with Wild Again-Slew O' Gold and Gate Dancer--- I knew right then, the BC Classic would be a fall Ky Derby
Easy Goer was coming into the 1989 Classic off a long grueling Historic campaign that included a 12 Furlong event The race right before the Classic While Sunday Silence was "Very" lightly raced and well rested...Sunday Silence also had a Great Trip and a Great Ride that McCarron called "The Greatest ride of my career"...Easy Goer broke slow in 6th position 6 lengths off his Rival...Made a mid race move to make up those 6 lengths on backstretch only to have to make up another 6 lengths in Stretch...All the Circumstances "Heavily" favored Sunday Silence in this race...Easy Goer closed to miss by a "Neck" at the wire as the heavy 1-2 favorite...Easy Goer was the "Better" Horse but was Very Unfortunate...Easy Goer had the Natural Talent to be a Top 5 all time Horse but got "Unlucky" in some Big races
I have 2 greatest Breeders Cup moments: 1: 1996, before paramutuel payoffs, I got 19-1 on Alphabet Soup, my first ever $50 win/place bet. I was the only one cheering in that Laughlin Nevada casino. 2: Tiznow in 2000. Some kid was showing off to his girlfriend, and as they crossed the wire, he told her NOBODY hit that. My buddy screamed: '$100 Win and Place AND the Exacta!" I replied "Exacta AND Trifecta!!!" Kid tucked his tail between his legs and left. Bet he didn't get none that night!
Chris McCarron taught Pat Day a Valuable lesson in the 89 Classic....McCarron put on a BRILLIANT display of Racing Tactics as Pat Day just loped along without a care in the World and missed by a Neck at the wire...Once Easy Goer hit his Best stride he was coming like a Train as he blew by after the wire...Pat Day waited too long
Not Pat Day’s fault. Easy Goer disliked Churchill track. Never ran good on it. Fought Day for a mile and an eighth until he finally got on some ground he liked. Horses are quirky.
Aside from the inaugural race, Wild Again, the Classic with Alysheba and Ferdinand was the best for me. Rarely will we see a previous K Derby kept in training the following year battling the latest K Derby winner. Too much risk; more money to be made in the breeding shed.
Both Tiznow wins belong on this list. The 1988 revival was no slouch either. The 1996 Classic at Woodbine, with it's four-horse finish, was as good as any of these with maybe the exception of Zenyatta's score, and easily better than the most overrated Classic ever - 1989. After SS passed Blushing John, McCarron eased up on him, which made the visual (and Tom's great call/beg) appear like the race was close.
SS was still driving to the wire though...Both Jocks let up on their Horses after the wire and Easy Goer went by him so easily....89 Classic was an example of everything being against Easy Goer heading into the race and during the race while SS had everything in his favor including a ride that McCarron called the Best of his Career....Pat Day needed to keep Easy Goer closer to the pace in that race on a speed favoring track like Gulfstream but Easy Goer was Sluggish throughout and broke poorly and moved up and fell back and moved up again and fell back top of stretch...Connections should have skipped the 12 Furlong Jock club and let Easy Goer rest more before the Classic from his grueling campaign
@@jeffsnell2795 Nevertheless, the race was over and SS won; McCarron nearly fell asleep in the last 100 yards; EG was never at his best on mile tracks, and Tom Durkin alone made it the race of the decade.

Pay day on Easy Goer was just a TERRIBLE ride and decision..not the 1st time pat day gave Easy Goer a terrible ride..Pat Day cost Easy Goer from becoming arguably the best racehorse ever
Easy Goer had bad ankles and could not run the turns at full tilt, on the other hand, Sunday Silence could run up steps. Watch the 1989 Preakness, one of the greatest contests ever.
That is true Easy Goer had bad ankles. Remember me and Doug McCoy drinker cold beer that was in Ice bucket for his ankles at Pimlico after the Preakness
Hey postcardterry, I'm pretty sure your're the one that's biased, you were so eager to try and criticize this person that you must not have paid attention. It clearly says "Breeders Cup CLASSIC", those horses you named didn't race in the Classic, Golidkova just kept running in the same race every year instead of trying one of the bigger Breeders' Cup races like the Classic or even the Distaff [Ladies Classic] but hey if i was her and I saw Zenyatta's name listed in the race I would probably avoid her too. (And Goldikova fans couldn't use the different surface as an excuse, because the 2008 & 09 Breeders' Cup were held at a track with synthetic surface which feels very similar to grass and give turf horses an advantage and so the Europeans did really well on it coming from grass and won a few) American Biased? It's funny how Europeans act about the US (I'm merely guessing that's where you're from) when most Europeans think they are better and try to look down on Americans. We're not the ones stuck in the Middle Ages.
As an American and all things being equal, Europeans may have a leg up on us. the turf races at the BC points that way. but we do bred for dirt, so it really is hard to compare.
mr goodbytes apologies,I got my homework wrong. But the commentary on these two classics was done by Trevor Denman a South African sports announcer..cheers
More American bias! Where is Goldikova and where is Arazi?t amazes me how little race fans like you know.Arazi should be number one on several grounds. He had the worst draw, which gave the yanks an advantage. He was the widest margin winner,he travelled from Europe, which gave the yanks an advantage. Most pertinent;he was tiny! at around 2 hands smaller than Bertrando,he gave that horse a 20 pound beating.Clever people bet on big horses because they're at a distinct advantage.Arazi defied physics !
Hey bud I know this comment is three years old, but maybe you're still angry. Just reminding you that the title says Breeders Cup CLASSIC moments. But maybe you are right, maybe we do have a bias against non-Classic horses in a Classic compilation.
After all these years, I still get goose bumps when I watch Zenyatta!
Tiznow v Giant's Causeway was the race of the decade.
Tiznow is number 1. Only horse to win twice. Plus in New York 6 weeks after 9/11 leading to the greatest race call ever. I loved Zenyatta and Cigar, but for a race fan "Tiznow wins it for America" may never be beat.

That was the closest Frankie Dettori would come to winning the BC Classic until 2008 where he rode ravens pass to victory

From what I could see, AP Indy's jockey never had to even wave the whip at him. That colt just loved to run every other horse into the ground!
How sad to know that the great Ferdinand ended up at a slaughter house. And Zenyatta's loss to blame... Ugh.

No 98 Classic? lol
I bet Blushing John in the race Sunday Silence won.
trying to fight back.
Who picked the order of these races? are you nuts.....
Alisheba was nothing like his dad, alydar. if Affirmed had not been in the triple crown, alydar would've won
Alysheba was a Great Horse himself but i would give Alydar the slight edge over him
I to this day can not watch that race
Hi
Zenyatta arrogate Super american pohrah mükemmel ya
Sunday Silence or Zenyata. #NOTCIGAR

Ruffian would beat zenytte by open lengths there was nothing to close into she was gone by 10 out of the gate and opening
Arcangues was 99-1 not 130-1
+#Howtobeme? The tote board can only show 99-1. He was 133-1, and paid $269.20 to win on a $2 bet.
+Venckman sorry I thought Tom said he was 99-1 but I guess your right, my bad !
The tote board only goes as high as 99-1. Arcangues was actually 133-1 that day and paid $269.20 for a two dollar win bet.
Toteboard only goes up to 99-1 Odds....When you see a Horse at 99-1 on the board he could be 300-1
Zenyatta is the best . This count down is a joke
Tiznow #7? Should be #1. Terrible list
i really hated that british commentator, curlin zenyatta's time, i was so glad when they got rid of him
mr goodbytes I think you’ll find the British commentator you hated is actually Larry Collmus a born and bred American from Baltimore in Maryland
@@catonahi so what your saying is that his accent changed to the guy who commentated the 2015/18 triple crown
mr goodbytes apologies,I got my homework wrong. But the commentary on these two classics was done by Trevor Denman a South African sports announcer..cheers
Zenyatta is still overrated , always beat the same horses and that classic was weak
But maybe you are right, maybe we do have a bias against non-Classic horses in a Classic compilation.
arise beating bertrando was his best race.
@@KevinSmith-ee4jb When did Goldikova and Arazi run in The Breeders Cup Classic?...i Must have missed those races...
