  • One of the biggest perks of digital illustration is the fact that you can edit your finished art in post, WITHOUT destroying it. Just like software like Photoshop, Procreate too has a myriad of blending mode options for you to choose from. Blending modes allow you to easily adjust colors, add textures, play with lighting, etc. Let me show you how to use them in Procreate!

I've been experimenting with blending modes since I first started using procreate last year, but I've never really understood the fundamentals of application. So I am really glad I decided to learn more about blending modes today - just 1 day after this video was published! I watched some other tuts before this one, and none of them were this straight forward and easy to follow. Will def check out your other & future tutorials. Thank you!!

Play around and see what it does?? You could have given info on blend modes... but you’ve given your viewers so much more... mind blowing stuff Dude!!!
Play around and see what it does... wow!!! That’s what all quality tutorials should say :/

I saw a couple of your replies on these comments, and I have a few things to say.
You have made very rude/sarcastic remarks in response to comments trying to criticize you, just like this one. It is extremely unprofessional. Just because you make tutorial videos that are free to watch doesn’t mean that you are above any criticism given by viewers. I wouldn’t recommend continuing to do this.

Atlantis The SeaWing thanks for your feedback! Every so often I have a day. Sorry if you were offended.

Actually, the instructor is 100% correct that you DO have to play around with the blend modes. They act very differently on different layers, colors brushes, etc. Come on dude, are you too lazy to put in some practice on your own? Ungrateful turd.

😭😭😭😭 since when is a *tutorial* just “go ahead and play around with them and see what they do”?💀in tears

Brave the Woods i found this comprehensive video with explanations of what blend modes are, how they work, and a detailed description of how they affect base layers. absolutely totally recommend watching it. “playing around” with them is super fun, but it is only good for when you are just playing

This was so helpful for understanding how to work with the blending modes. I’ve not used them before since I didn’t know the basics of how to work with them. I will have so much fun playing with them and finding my favourites

I noticed there are almost no videos/tutorials which show precisely what the blending modes do and explain in what situations they are applicable. Most of the videos just say 'experiment a bit' or 'play around a bit'. Your demonstration is also trial and error, hit and miss. Wikipedia has an actual explanation of how the blending modes work, but an actual video would be nicer.

Paula Bean yeah I hear that! It gets super technical and I have researched it, I just wanted this video would be more simplified in nature giving folks the gist. And honestly, a lot of the time I do just play around with the modes to see what works best ha.

A good title for this would be “Intimidated by blending modes?!” because you made them less scary but I’m still non the wiser on why they’re doing what they’re doing 😂

Hey I’ve seen that you’ve kind of given in to some people leaving negative reviews, just remember you don’t actually have to respond to them... it’s not entirely obvious to them that you aren’t going to give an in-depth tutorial of blending modes in a 10 minute tutorial 🙄 The best way to learn in art is to experiment but i guess that doesn’t really have to be said, maybe if you could, just re-title the video? Idk I just wanted to learn about the multiply layer ngl it’s the one my friends use the most and I’m glad you did show some of how to use these layers...

That’s an excellent point. And being new to UA-cam, I made the rookie mistake of reading the comments and taking offense ha. Hard not to when you spend hours creating free content thinking you are helping people, only to be greeted with such negativity. But you’re right, being passive aggressive doesn’t help anything...clearly haha. Thanks for watching and the kind words :)

@@BravetheWoods No honestly, thank you for creating a tutorial! I'm new to procreate and just using all these digital forms of creating art is pretty difficult after spending years on just traditional so it's nice to be able to find short vids on that. :)

Honestly, you don't seem to have a real grasp of the blender modes.
You also did something pretty common in these videos. You spent little time on the mechanics of the interface-- absolutely the most important thing with 90% of these subjects. How does it work? What do you click? What EXACTLY does it do so both a professional and a 5 year old could understand your explanation?
You didn't offer any of this.
The outcome-- trying to follow your instructions, I created a problem I couldn't fix.
You were so unclear, I safeguarded against that possibility so all I lost was 20 minutes. On the other hand, for that 20 minutes, I learned very little.
