  • Alien and Predator are two of cinema's greatest monsters. Each franchise fits perfectly in with the other, so why did the highly anticipated 2004 film disappoint?
This is a brief retrospective and review of Paul W.S. Anderson's AVP: Alien vs. Predator, a look at what went wrong and the impact the film had on both creature's respective series.

they were designed to destroy the franchises.
consider this before you call me a conspiracy theorist:
-conspiracy theories now have a better track record then CNN.
      -these movies subvert literally everything established in earlier films;
the alien is no longer alien, it is man made.
the alien is no longer distinguished by it's life cycle, robbing it of literally everything that makes it what it is.
the spacejockey is no longer alien, and everything interesting about it is now a suit.
scientists are religious zealots willing to gamble lives on a belief, and the least scientific.
the cutthroat corporation WY is no longer interested in money above and beyond all things,
and thereby robbed of it's only function in the movies.
everything that was once the mystery that was the core of the franchise is explained and exposed
to the point of becoming boring and mundane, and everything that happened in earlier movies
has been negated or changed and all of the threat has been reassigned to humanity's own self destructive nature.
why does it have these things in common with every major sci fi franchise right now?

One thing comes to mind: PG13
I’m more of a Predator fan than a Alien tbh, I say Predator is absolute classic and inspiration for me personally (to bring back the Predator to his roots in my fan film script of Predator Bad Blood), Predator 2 is in my mind is the most underrated sequel ever, Predators is another underrated sequel and doesn’t get the hate it deserves.

Oddly, I preferred AVP to Prometheus. It was more fun. Shallow and thin it may be, but it's a decent romp that doesn't really pretend to be saying anything profound about Lucifer or Satan or Creation. Some of the sets are amazing. I love the shot of the sea-vessel powering its way to the whaling station through the ice. I found the Aliens to be interesting characters. I liked the way they moved. And as an Ancient Aliens sort of film, I appreciated its attempt to place the story's plot in some sort of historical context. It was a sort of fan-film that I thought somewhat displayed a love for the Aliens and their nature. Of course, Scott has dumped all over it, which I can sort of understand. As for what J Cameron thinks, have you seen this at www.aintitcool.com/node/22405 I'll leave it to more skilled sleuths than me to determine if this interview is authentic. There are some great bits in it that, in retrospect, are loaded with irony.
    ***
QUINT: I remember before Paul W.S. Anderson did ALIEN VS PREDATOR it came out that you kind of made an offer to do another ALIEN film with Ridley Scott...
JAMES CAMERON: Yeah. Ridley and I talked about doing another ALIEN film and I said to 20th Century Fox that I would develop a 5th ALIEN film. I started working on a story, I was working with another writer and Fox came back to me and said, "We've got this really good script for ALIEN VS PREDATOR and I got pretty upset. I said, "You do that you're going to kill the validity of the franchise in my mind." Because to me, that was FRANKENSTEIN MEETS WEREWOLF. It was Universal just taking their assets and starting to play them off against each other.
    QUINT: Milking it, totally.
JAMES CAMERON: Milking it. So, I stopped work. Then I saw ALIEN VS PREDATOR and it was actually pretty good. (laughs) I think of the 5 ALIEN films, I'd rate it 3rd.
    QUINT: Ummm...
JAMES CAMERON: I actually liked it. I actually liked it a lot.
QUINT: You know, I hate it when movies don't abide by the continuity of their series...
JAMES CAMERON: When they make up their own rules.
QUINT: Exactly. They did that a lot with the alien incubation time, where from egg to chestbuster it happened...
    JAMES CAMERON: In minutes, yeah...
QUINT: That kind of stuff really pissed me off with the movie...
JAMES CAMERON: Well, it starts to become a video game. It's like, "Okay, that can be in him and that can show up over here..." It becomes more metaphorical or more comic book. I don't mean comic book in a negative way, I just mean that it's working at a kind of mythic, metaphoric level as opposed to really trying to immerse you in reality.
I mean, I felt when I was making ALIENS I think the same thing Ridley was doing with ALIEN, which is... "I'm going to make you think this is real." Even though it is completely ridiculous deep space adventure. We were going to make you feel like it's real. It's a question of does the film take itself seriously or not.
    ***
Yes, AVP took liberties with what had already been set with the Alien's lifecycle in terms of the chestburster's incubation time, etc. But it creates a sort of frightening place for the creatures in Mesoamerican mythology without messing with the mystery of the Alien's origins in deep time. Sir Ridley, for all his disdain of AVP, has given us Covenant, wherein he takes liberties of his own with the very 'rules' he put in place regarding the Alien's lifecycle, which he established in Alien. (Hey! He sort of ripped Anderson off!) And as for the mystery of the Alien's origins? Aryan Android Frankenstein did it. As a Science Fair project. Because he was bitter.
So although there were parts of Prometheus that were indeed beautiful and deserved further exploration, for simple story telling and for the sheer joy of watching the Aliens playing merry hell and seeing the Queen appearing out of nowhere yet again, I'll side with AVP.
Never saw AVP2. Not planning on it either.
Keep up the good work! Enjoying your channel a lot.

That was well said. In my opinion, AVP is one of those movies like Jurassic Park 3. It doesn't have an intelligent story or much of a likeable set of characters, but it IS fun to watch for the sake of Alien/dinosaur/ creature action. Not a good movie if you want to pick the ins and outs of compelling storytelling and worldbuilding, but for what it was, it has some great aesthetics, practical effects, creature designs, and fight scenes. It was a fun movie nonetheless. And even though it wasn't the best movie, it DID succeed in some very interesting concepts (like JP3)
As far as AVP Requiem.....you're not missing anything. It's abysmal. They turned both the aliens and predators into a cheap teen slasher monster, everything is shot in pitch black darkness so it's hard to make out ANY coherency of the fight scenes and the best part....the main character is a sapless pizza delivery boy. Creature design was the only positive point of the film (I will admit the xenos and the predalien DID look really cool) but the movie itself is a disaster.

Firstly, can someone please explain why Fox continues to produce films that are steadily getting worse? Is there some big behind the scenes problem going on?
Secondly AVP1 is my guilty pleasure, it being my first introduction to both cretures when I was young. However, to make a good Aliens Vs Predators movie I would recommend taking a thread from the (relitively) recent comics Fire and Stone. In it the predators come across the aliens and the enginer's black goo from prometheus, which begins to wreak havoc on them unexpetedly. However it still show the predators kicking ass and taking names, but also coming to grips with something they cannot comprehend, and that could satisfy the creepy alien feel of Alien while also keeping the unrelenting power of the Predator intact.

Nah, this movie fared way better than I expected. The Thing/at the Mountains of Madness vibe really saved movie. You see, whether you're on an unknown planet, a derelict ship, or in the Antarctic continent, the Alien franchise is about isolation. That's why AVP Requiem sucked balls. It stripped away that key concept.

The studio could have shot the film at Fox Studios Australia(since the film took place on desert-like planet), cast an up-and-coming actress, say Kelly Hu as Machiko Noguchi. The rating should have been R, just like the other films in each franchise.

In my opinion, the first Alien vs Predator is pretty good with interesting Alien and Predator lore, I love the idea of humans and Predators teaming up to fight the Xenomorphs just like in the original AVP comic, and it had great special effects, but the problem I had is how Paul W. S. Anderson directed this movie where it sets in the present day instead of the Alien franchise like in the original AVP comic, it has a PG-13 rating instead of an R rating, and all the characters are just red-shirts with no development whatsoever.
The second movie is the worst of all Alien and Predator series (even with good effects, this film is a disaster) all thanks to Brothers Strouse's poor directing: the lighting is tough to see, the character inspirations from the Alien franchise are poorly written due to the fact that the Brothers Strouse aren't Alien fans and decided to direct an AVP movie for some reason, the human characters are paper-thin and boring, the acting is terrible with cliched writing, the Xenomorphs, especially the Predalien, are misrepresented, the deaths are nothing but a random collection of bloody bodies and misanthropy, the Yautjas are idiots, especially when Wolf the Elite Predator is treated like a Bad Blood and an unrepentant murderer who also ends up slaughtering humans for no reason when his goal was to exterminate Xenomorphs, the story felt like a Friday the Thirteenth movie than an Alien and Predator movie, and even the ending is forgettable.

I know AVP wasn't fantastic, my biggest problem was that it was a too fast paced and short film; the story was actually very solid; setting it on modern day earth probably wasn't the best of moves, but they do ensure no one knows about the xenomorphs and the 2nd film helps give the government an inkling about them as well as establish how humans achieved space travel by the end of this century; Shane Black, director of "The Predator", has said there's still a potentially good AVP film to be made; I think with the right writers, it can be made and have a connection to the universe established by "Prometheus" and close the circle; I still love them though and nothing will change that opinion...

I didn’t mind the aliens being on earth in avp with them being in Antartica and a remnant of an ancient civilization. At least it was only a small group of people in an isolated part of the world. Avp r on the other hand takes place right after the first one and undoes everything Lex and the predator did to stop the alien. At least with avp, you could still make it fit since it’s suggested the engineers were all but completely dead, or at least remained isolated. I’d like to think the predators found an alien egg and started breeding them to hunt after seeing what they could do. I consider avp and the 2010 game canon, but not avp r. I can at least see Peter Weyland as being Lance Hendrickson’s descendant that inherited Weyland industries.

    • @tgiacin435
      @tgiacin435 4 роки тому

I also didn’t mind the predators being bulkier. The head definitely could’ve been better. The animatronics could’ve gone that close. It just makes me think of a predator version of a derp face. Since there’s like different predators, I figured they were just another type.
Also I’m curious, what must’ve their first encounter with the alien was like. How did they cultivate these versions. They tend to do between 2 and 4 legged stances. More organic, but smaller heads. Longer pipes. Bulkier, whatever planet they found these on, those creatures must be huge

Yeah, gotta disagree. AvP is a good film and along with Alien and Alien 3 are the only films from the franchise that I still watch. At this point they really need to stop making Alien films. (AvP:R was awful).

I mean it certainly had potential and was entertaining enough but it's clear it was just meant to be a cash grab blockbuster crossover. The story and characters could have been deeper and sort of elaborated on a deeper meaning or theme. For instance where mankind fits in with these alien species and how many more are there out there.

It would have been so easy to make them colonists who discovered this pyramid on some distant planet. It could even have been underneath the ice still, maybe it’s an ice planet, who knows. Anyway there are still all the other issues with this film but the fact that it’s set on Earth bothers me so intensely that I don’t really get around to caring about everything else that’s wrong with it

Characters that have the only reason to be in the movie is as a casualty or filler waiting for their nemesis to be put out of their misery. 😂😨😲😎

Good to know I'm in good company (Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron) in that I hated the premise of an AvP movie from the get go. Let's be honest here, it's cheesy, gimicky and feels more like a fanfic. It demeans both universes, not to mention retcons and completely undoes the events of the earlier movies (Ripley's entire motivation to keep the aliens from reaching earth, for example).

  • @saxbend

  • @iarneson814

    Simple:
    1. Writers and director
    2. The PG-13 rating
    3. No source material whatsoever
    4. The overall look of both aliens and predators was over exaggerated, almost characters of the originals.

I feel like it needed the future space setting of the comics, books, and video games; better characters and directing; and last but not least make the damn fucking movie rated r. I don't know who thought it was good idea to get two r rated franchises and combine them to make it pg-13.

The reason the Predators look too squat and fat is because they were average human sized people in the suits (probably stunt people). Without the 7' 3" frame of Kevin Peter Hall, the Predator suit unfortunately looks too chunky. God knows why they just didn't hire wrestlers or basketballers, ok they mightn't perform fight scenes, but there's ways around that.

    • @IntrospectiveEntertainment

Sad thing is Alien Covenant was bad with David being the only saving grace surrounded with moronic characters. The Predator just tells a story that makes no sense and try to hard to be a action comedy flick. It's sad how far removed both series are. Prometheus is the only decent movie released in both series since the 90s. AVP can be done. Just setting a movie on earth present day is a big no no.

Alien: Horror Masterclass. Predator: Action Sci-fi/Horror Masterclass. Aliens: One of the best sequels in film history. Predator 2: Divisive, but imo still really good. AVP: Meh at best, forgettable at worst. AVPR: Had potential, too many humans, poor lighting. Alien 3: A good wrap up of Ripley's story. Predators: A decent return to form but still lackluster, Force Awakens of the Pred franchise. Alien Resurrection-Covenant: Trash. The Predator: Should have never been made, ruined Shane Black as a director. Modern filmmaking has turned these once Icons of the big screen into a flaccid, tone deaf joke. The Predator was literally a joke-filled, buddy-cop movie where the Yautja try to upgrade themselves with...autism. Alien Covenant was almost a return to form but ultimately was a forgettable, unneeded movie. Instead of relying on hype and modern movie tropes, have actual characters (Even though most of the characters in the older films were a tad 1-dimensional), take it seriously: Predator had funny moments but they were that, moments. Hollywood is starting to think audiences are dumb with low attention spans and it shows.
