Hi! This was a very interesting subject to tackle as the very idea of Prometheus and Covenant was aggravating to some Alien fans who enjoyed the mystery of the original film. Also, both films have some undeniable flaws and screenwriting issues (Covenant especially in my opinion). Still, I wanted to take a ‘the glass is half full’ approach and see if I could break down the deeper themes and implications of these films. While doing so; I followed Ridley Scott’s original vision which assumes that the Alien was always meant to be a creature/weapon of design, the Space Jockey from the original film was an Engineer, and the Alien vs. Predator films aren’t canon (sorry!).
I for some reason spent money to go see this movie...and you sure made my dollar go further.
Cool Paradise Lost connection.
It's been years since I've seen AvP. What about it is non-canonical?
Alex White that since David created the aliens approximately 20 years, give or take, from the original alien; they couldnt be on earth in 2004 and 07 from the timelines of avp. And Ridley Scott says so. And I think he has created a rather marvelous prequel series.
Discovered your wonderful channel with its beautiful content just today!
You put into words the thoughts and feelings I have about these movies in a way I myself cannot.
I thoroughly enjoy your reviews and your views on the themes addressed in these movies.
I am looking forward to your future content! You have earned yourself a sub.
Going by the sound of your accent, are you by any chance Dutch?
Like Stories of Old one movie i think you would really enjoy analyzing is demolition. With Jake Gyllenhaal
Both films, frighteningly beautiful and ending with some dark humor from David.
"Don't let the bed bugs bite"
Who literally gives a shit about this hipster android with daddy issues ?
Yes. David is a great and terrifying villain in his own right. I wanted to see his comeuppance
Ooof! Terribly evil
Can I just say, I have been on youtube for years, and I have never been so compelled to like every single video you make. Not just because I enjoyed it, but because I desperately want to support your creations. Keep up the mesmerizing video essays sir!
Thank you for the support, it means a lot!
Wonderful video! I think the films are definitely flawed, but they both dig at really interesting questions and themes, which this video captures perfectly, well done!
Thanks!
the movie sucked ass because it had A REALLY BAD SCRIPT.
you want to see a really self-conscious AI go look at "Westworld" season 1.
Redžep Westworld is overrated.
Mediocre self-indulgent vanity projects.
Just because a movie has some interesting themes doesn't make the story instantly good. They need to have interesting characters and understandable motivations and both these movies, Covenant especially suck at that so much.
This is so damn interesting. I really hope Ridley gets to finish his prequel series.
As I heard he was redrawn from making any more Aliens. And that's a good thing. He "murdered" his own creation. Prometheus and Covenant should have been stand-alone movies not relating to Alien. That's why he went on to do the online series Raised by Wolves.
I really hope he does NOT. Prometheus could have been interesting, but it was too messy and too reliant on sequel bait. And Covenant was downright fucking stupid and reeking with pretentious pseudo-intellectualism. That man needs to retire, or pick up Blade Runner again if he loves rogue AI stories so much.
Bruh
@@yrooxrksvi7142 why don't you do better?
@@aroidpapa Typical excuse of someone with no standards who can't take no for answer. Enjoy your slop.
The last 40 seconds really drives home the true horror of Davids design.
Like Stories Of Old, i love you man, always fenomonal work
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant video! Sums up every reason I LOVED these movies, and adds the cultural references I was missing, so I can dive into them. Thank you!
This makes the movies alot more enjoyable. Thank you.
If you need a pathetic, overbloated "analysis" to embellish two over-budgeted pretentious pieces of trash, you're not really capable of thinking for yourself.
I love your content, please keep doing what you do.
Thank you! Will do!
Bravo! I’m fascinated by the philosophy behind Alien Covenant, I’m graceful for this video.
Instant subscription for being one of the only people online who can recognize Prometheus for the goddamn masterpiece it really is.
People who think 3 & 4 we're better than the new ones have nostalgia blindness
I completely fell in love with these movies (Alien, Prometheus, Alien Covenant)
I love the creatures and the story behind them I hope there will be a conclusion to this series
I remember some negative 1979 reviews about alien regarding the stupidity of the crew...Also, the thing 1982 was generally despised. Look at the status of these films now. As films generally get worse these days, promethius and covenant in say 30 years may be viewed in a much more favorable light.
Great video! This franchise really is an epic tale when you take a step back and look at what the xenomorph and its creation represent.
This is THE BEST in depth analysis of Prometheus and Covenant.
While I don't agree with the sentiment that Covenant doesn't know what it wants to be, I do enjoy your analysis very much. Good job man, kudos :)
Was that "Watch me, I'll do the fingering" beat intentional?
Had to be! LOL!
DarwinsChihuahua David kisses Walter later in the film, so what do you think?
Yes.
Of course!
A Validation for the prequals, Tribute to the whole Series.
perfection with no nitpicking or over-analysis
Just Sheer Interpretive Acceptance of the Lore
Just subscribed. Please do more of these Alien analyses because they’re amazing!!!
thanks for lifting up the consciousness of the viewers and stimulate their best sides. There is an old saying that recites: "One should always leave a place were is has been in better conditions than when he arrived" :)
You have an outstanding gift for perception and deduction my friend. Keep up the stimulating and enlightening work!
Thank you so much for your videos, your Arrival video is one of the best things i've seen on YT!
this is ,arguably in my opinion, you're best video.
Wow, you actually made Covenant really interesting... I love you!
This is the best video on the Alien prequels.
Here's to more such wondrous videos from you! Great going !! :-)
-from Delhi, India
I think Scott wanted to make a movie about A.I. and agreed to do Alien sequels to sneak it in. All the stuff with David is great, the Alien stuff feels like an afterthought.
wonderful work. Thanks
With the rise of artificial intelligence nowadays, this video about creators and creation is even more profound. Thank you.
But what does that even have to do with what Alien was about ? The fear of unknown and alien horror ?
If you wanted a pseudo-intellectual movie about rogue AI, Matrix exists. These movies were overbloated garbage.
Wow in 2018 ai was already a thing
Amazing ideas . I’ve watched this commentary numerous times
The polar thinking of humans is boundless. We are both the result of molecular interaction on a colossal scale, but also the result of what could be called a singular intention. There is no disharmony between those who espouse evolution and those who espouse God: evolution is able to be seen in numerous forms around us, and still all things have that one initial 'energy' as their source. Until a person can see both as true, there will always be not only unanswered questions, but something desperately priceless which will remain forever obscured from the observer.
Regarding being gods, each of us is creating our own universe within. Every second. Even the bible tells: "I have said, 'ye are gods' " Psalms 82 : 6
And the act of creating.....it's impossible for creating to be against our creator/s. In the movie, perhaps it is. In reality, no. To create a thing is to know the joy in the heart of God. Our very existence is an act of creation, every moment, every thought, word, and deed. How could our very existence be against God? If it were so, then God was flawed in having created us to begin with, and that is not deity, but rather a senseless infant-god.
9:26 After you just talked about this android's grandiosity you can just hear him after quoting Ozymandias
I love these movies, but it infuriated me too because it left me with 85% more questions than answers.
I absolutely Love Covenant.
You did it again . Good job , great video well put together. Thank you.
Great video! It's done very well!
I really enjoyed this analysis. It seemed fair. Many people have been trashing these films and not giving them any merit. I find them entertaining, and I like the direction Ridley Scott is taking the franchise. I like how it's going full circle and how he's painting a bigger picture.
Genius Scott...in fact he had to be courageous in integrating Sumerian mythology into the alien franchise
Absolutely love your channel please continue the conversation thank you
Awesome, you put words to the emotions and impressions I experienced while watching the film
Outstanding sir.
.... i'm going to watch prometheus again. I thought it was just a weird alien movie but there truly is a story behind it.
Thank you for the video! :)
I personally liked both, Prometheus and Alien Covenant. You cannot please an audience that is already divided.
As Tolkien points out
The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own. I don't think it gave life to the orcs, it only ruined them and twisted them.
LOTR has given us links of savage creation
I know a lot of people disliked the idea of David being the creator of the Xenomorph (we still don't know if he was the true creator of course), but I always liked the idea. Weyland-Yutani pursue obtaining a xenomorph specimen at all costs. With Weyland Corp being the first to create synthetics. Now their creation has created something they are so desperate to obtain. It's kinda cool
Fantastic video!
I know this would literally end up being a 10 part series of episodes, but please do the Matrix Trilogy
Really great analysis... Unlike many others I love the idea that the Xeno is a perversion of creation and that it's rooted in David.. It's a wonderful spin!
Prometheus in particular reminds me somewhat of the fall and rise of Blade Runner..
The movies are grandious in subtext... Unfortunately misunderstood by the "fan"
...was that Das Rheingold playing in the beginning? Reminds me of Herzog's Nosferatu, every time :^)
Great editing man, and the audio quality is superb! I make content similar to you and I was planning to make a video similar to this but you beat me to it haha, but seriously keep up the good work!
Beautiful analysis.
That was incredible. Thank you
Great analysis. Keep it up!
Thank you for making such awesome content!
I wonder how the search for life plays into this ongoing story-telling? Would another life form have different “stories?” Or would they be similar? I’m suggesting that we are looking for a way out. And, I’m wondering if there is one, or not. Considering your most-recent trilogy, where we can “create ourselves,” (my understanding of your work), is that a new idea? If not, I would like to know the roots of that suggestion?
I love your essays. I am not particularly eloquent, so all I can say is; fuck yeah!
Beautiful, as always
While both films are flawed I never felt that those flaws ruined the movie for me. The over all themes of creation and creators was always interesting to me, David and peter are my favorite things that came from the two movies.
Well made documentary.
Brilliant!
the predators must represent something please explain that
I like what you've said here but I also have my own ideas about the cyclical nature Scott is trying to portray. As you outlined in the first few minutes of your video, the perversion of human sexuality and subsequently, the process in which human life is normally created, is subverted by a lot of the signifiers of the Alien franchise (face hugging and chest popping). This relates to the idea you talked about that speaks of the violent nature of how life will devour itself in order to further itself. I think this theme continues with the two latest films through, as you highlighted, the engineer giving violent birth to humans in the opening scenes of prometheus. The engineers violently sacrficied themselves, to some extent, for the creation of humans, life furthering life. This theme is then continued in covenant, but perhaps in a more diluted way. The story would reveal that a human creation, David, is the one who would perfect the creation of the biological weapon that is the alien. Humans would, assumptively, attempt to make androids like David and Walter for the purpose of elongating or furthering life, but perhaps since there is no violence in creation, the cycle is perforated in a sense, and android's like David exist outside the cycle of creation creates, creation kills, creation creates, so on. As David often said in his dialougues, the creation always seeks to be better than he who created it. Just some thoughts there.
Exactly the search of perfect creation will always be , even if it goes for our own destruction
As an Alien series fan, this was highly enjoyable. Hope the rumors are true-more movies on the way.
I think the robot , represents our need for knowledge
I love your videos. Great job.
Really great video!
Who made the art drawings at 7:30 ? And lovely video!
I found them on Google, not sure exactly. Thanks!
Wow! What a great video 👍👍
WELL DONE!!!
Thank you for this.
Covenant gets better and better on repeat viewings.
"Where do the aliens come from?"
A question I don't think anyone ever actually asked.
Because the answer was always "from the dark void of the unknown".
Yes finally!!
You get it
The androids made the aliens because the androids were always angry jealous and disgusted with humans. Thats why they malfunction.
Very good
What I learned: that creation as an act of superiority is devilish -- what makes the Engineers noble in my eyes are their willingness to be part of the life cycle -- what makes David evil is his refusal to "serve" other beings. It's a profound analogy for pride, a superiority complex . Whereas the words "creation", "life", "progress" are usually words that inspire us, those same words are within David's paradigm for creating a "perfect, undefiled" life. What makes something meaningful, than, is a willingness to die for friends and life, rather than trying to overcome it.
I've watched Prometheus and especially Covenant like 15 times and they are supposed to be "bad". Covenant ranks 4th for me behind Alien, Aliens, and Alien Resurrection. and Covenant has the best, most inventive and creepy soundtrack of them all, that's right, all of them.
Prometheus and Covenant are beautiful-looking messes. I got what Scott was going for, but the execution was very poor. I honestly think he could’ve succeeded in his creation story in a universe outside of the Alien continuity.
Your commentary about the films is excellent! It does make the movies seem like more than what they are, but I feel like you should be out there advising screenwriters 😎
Prometheus is a way of Life.
Next, a philosophical analysis on my character. I believe that big and smart woman such as myself has all the right to be Queen. It's not my fault if the Little Mermaid is dumb. 🌚
How long are we to look outwards in an attempt to understand where we came from without first looking within to first understand the nature of the we that asks the question in the first place? How is it even possible to understand the origin of something when you don't even know what that something is?
I didn't love or hate Prometheus and Covenant. I thought they were artistically beautiful. Where I have my reservations is their tone with Alien, and how much they differed. The Alien was "unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality". It didn't need an origin, or explanation. Not knowing was one of the things that made it so wondrously terrifying. Do, a prequel, sure, but Scott created too many inconsistencies by trying to do his theodicy in one film, then appease the fans in the other.
Awesome video! Nice to see finally someone understanding the story elements in these movies. In these Ridley Scott stepped outside of a simple horror story and it's for the better!
Great video
Masterful video. If you are in need of data/literature researcher, I m willing to help you in. I want to learn to be as professional as you are :) Love how you edited the ending with Wagner in the background.
While I consider neither Prometheus or Alien Covenant to be competent movies (something that the original Alien excels in), I enjoy them both greatly for the philosophical themes, and the questions it poses within the narrative. It's bizarre really. I can't really recall a movie that I've enjoyed in that same manner.
Me too. The philosophy is what draws me back.
If it was a reboot of the og movies it wouldn’t get nearly as much hate
excellent video. i really like your channel, keep up the great work!
I was annoyed. One of my pet hates in movies are dumb astronauts. They are smarter, more well balanced, more capable and have more commonsense than most people, which is how they got to be astronauts. It's a shame because I agree that the themes are interesting.
Nice job. Like and sub.
The biggest problem with this movie was a lack of a real script it had no plot . They just made it up as they went along in order to make a movie.
Definitely not Prometheus
You know, Covenant explains why Xenos never attack other Android on the ship. It must be either a failsafe or they see the droids as relatives.
Bishop.
Creation witjout love leads to ultimate corruption.
Prometheus is so fucking good idc what anyone says
*"I'll do the fingerin"*
Why r u gae?
Yea... the themes and mythological underpinnings of the films are great, SO MUCH POTENTIAL, a pitty they are such incoherent messes plotwise. Covenant in relation to Prometheus is so terribly illogical one dares to call it a writer's nightmare.
¿Y los subtítulos en español? :(
11:20
Thanks!
I hope we do get Alien Awakening and see the conclusion
to David's story arc
Best movie in the franchise in my opinion, was aliens by James Cameron. By far.
2004's Alien vs Predator is a masterpiece.
I know you want attention but please don't do that.
But I really want attention!
