I've yet to see any rival to this legendary group. Their unique fingerprint signature sounds are unrivaled anywhere in the jazz music world. I grew up on this, emerging in the late 1970s, peaking in the 1980s and summiting in the 1990s. My children are officially "Spyro Gyra" children, all avid lovers of this incredible group of dynamic artists.
As a high school student in 1985, I listened to the ACCESS ALL AREAS album repeatedly while reading the book Helter Skelter. To this day, it is the soundtrack of that book. When I see or hear them play, the mayhem the Manson family caused replays thru my mind. I'm not sure if it is good or bad, but these were forever engrained into my young brain. I still love this band and their unique music.

I have such a hard time calling this smooth jazz. It's way too good, haha! I'm only joking of course. I think a lot of their music would be considered more jazz fusion than smooth jazz, wouldn't it?

I agree, I always loved Azzolina's phrasings and improv much more than Fernandez's. Fernandez's biggest influence is Santana so it isn't much of a surprise that he doesn't really go too far outside that box.
Always liked this lineup with Jay Azzolina on guitar, Richie Morales on drums, Oscar Cartaya on bass, Dave Samuels on vibes, and, of course, Tom Schumann and Jay Beckenstein. I was fortunate enough to catch them on this tour. Just to fill in some of the gaps: Song 1 is "Swing Street", Song 2 is "Fairweather", Song 4 is "The Unknown Soldier", all from the "Point of View" album. If you haven't heard it, POV features this particular group and is well worth the buy.
Saw and talked with these guys at the West bend Jazz Fest in the 90's the highlight of the evening, you could tell they enjoy their work. True pioneers of the smooth jazz movement.

ask any musician performing live is a very daunting task. a lot needs to gel in order to pull off a memorable performance. for me this was one of their best performances ever.partly because they had what is arguably the best line up in jay azzolina oscar cartaya and richie morales

I feel like this line-up (Beckenstein • Schuman • Samuels • Morales • Cartaya • Azzolina) is probably the peak of Spyro Gyra. Not to discredit the other members through its history since they're all epic, but it's a bit of a bummer this specific roster only lasted for just 2 albums.
It took a favorite cousin whom was an outstanding musician for me to go looking for outstanding, solid music which of course brought my thoughts to Spyro Gryra! Whatever happened to the band? I'm back home in Pago Pago American Samoa so I would have to plan at least a year to see them in concert. Hopefully, y'all that are stateside take advantage on your opportunities! DNA True, people often call it fusion. But it's still smooth jazz to me. The Yellowjackets are probably in the same category and I love them too.

I feel like this line-up (Beckenstein • Schuman • Samuels • Morales • Cartaya • Azzolina) is probably the peak of Spyro Gyra. Not to discredit the other members through its history since they're all epic, but it's a bit of a bummer this specific roster only lasted for just 2 albums.

It took a favorite cousin whom was an outstanding musician for me to go looking for outstanding, solid music which of course brought my thoughts to Spyro Gryra! Whatever happened to the band? I'm back home in Pago Pago American Samoa so I would have to plan at least a year to see them in concert. Hopefully, y'all that are stateside take advantage on your opportunities! If I only could fly since my legal name is Lorraine...LOL!

Julio Moran hes the same one that played with the Rippingtones with Russ Freeman back in the days, great cat, like his style
