Ha! I wasn't expecting a gurdy mention in the comnents :) I thought using the e-bow and sustain sounded closer to a hurdy-gurdy since it is continuous sound.
Thanks for today's episode, I was feeling a little bit ebowtional, so this cheered me right up. Today, I learned that cellos don't actually do anything, they're just there so the rosin has something to rub against and make sick toans. And the more bows, the better it sounds. Now that you have used the world's tiniest cello to play a normal sized one, you are legally obligated to go to that museum with the world's largest double bass and use a normal sized cello to play that. Personally, I've always used the Jonny Greenwood quarter trick where you rub the edge of a quarter on the string, but that would probably shred any string other than steel so quickly. Mr. James came ready to throw bows, and for that, we salute him, and for his strength in thrashing and flapping. Also, just smacking the harp strings with reverb speaks to the little avant-garde part of my heart; maybe some dulcimer hammers next? Today, I found something to sustain me, a rosin to live. Thank you, and take care. I wonder if corn silk can be used in a bow-like context... (Also how did we not have Scissors Em in the Emily bracket. just give her a giant scissor like Faust's giant scalpel in Guilty Gear.)
Lmfao omg we NEED scissor Em in the bracket!! Alongside Goth Em™️ - oh man we all need to convince Mr. James to bring his cello to that museum so we can try it!!! That is GENIUS!!!!
Not gonna lie, using the tiny cello as a bow actually could have instrumental possibilities with its ability to both play and pluck strings at the same time
I'm so grateful for this video. I played violin for like a decade of my childhood and love the sound of a bow on strings, so when I heard about ebows, I was intrigued to know what it (and other bows) would sound like on the harp (which is what I play now). Well, now I know! It's not a worthwhile investment! Thanks! This video was tremendously informative 🙂
This entire thing was hysterical ! I am a guitar player who loves to fool around with stuff as well.....I have used both an e-bow and a violin bow on my guitar with lots of effects....it is ridiculously fun....Thank You Mr. James !... your using the tiny violin on the cello reminded me of the movie Spinal Tap.....Nigel Tufnel uses a violin on his guitar....Thanks Emily ! This made me laugh a lot!
I love how no one can agree on what the first vowel in "Rosin" actually is. "What have we learned today?" Don't let Emily near sharp objects, MORE ROSIN, harps on bows kinda suck, Emily strings her harp with the bowels of the dead, cellists are weird.
Hahahahaaaa “on todays episode of “will it harp?” That was amazing! Rosin is like sawce you need a good amount says Mr.James 😆 also the slapping of the harp with astral destiny almost sounded like the Sony PS-one console boot up screen. Sooo what did we learn kids? “Nothing.” 🤣 I needed this laugh, Thank you
Cellist here! I used to play in a harp / cello duet so this video is highly relevant to my interests. Watching this made me laugh till I cried. Y'all are so cute / funny!!
I loved the "patting your head and rubbing your belly" analogy. I recently started working on double bass vibrato while bowing, and that "patting head/rubbing belly" analogy was my exact same thought. You're trying to keep the bowing even and consistent, without obvious pulsing -- all while trying to work on left hand vibrato and different rates. I'm glad that I practiced patting my head and rubbing my belly when I was younger. (Oh, and the rosin on the strings when you typically play pizzicato!!!)
I was hoping to see Mr. James bowing on the bass strings while you played the higher strings. It's amazing how even he could make the sound, even on a not-cello. It's almost like he's been doing it for a few years!
A lot of your videos came up in my feed and now I am binge watching all your videos. It's super fun. I've seen a lot of them but I also missed a lot. You've probably seen a lot of my comments in random videos but it's truly me, a genuine fan of yours, not someone hacking my account. Lol also, thanks Mr. James for being in this video. Lol
hahahah thank you so much for all of your kind comments, and thank you for being here with us!! I really appreciate you! 🥰❤️ also yes Mr. James is the BEST hahah
Thank you 🙏 The fun is infectious, and genuine laughter makes my day. I have my mother's violin that I've had recently reconditioned... not sure I want to gum up any guitar strings with rosin. Be good to you 🙏🤍💛
This is such a wholesome, fun channel. I love it. I don't play any instruments, don't know anything about them, but still am amused and end up laughing when I watch your videos. Thanks for making them.
Check out "bowed piano". They treat the piano like a bowed harp basically. They use string with rosin and multiple musicians so they can play more complex music.
Mister James was right about the rosin though. I played in the backup band for a country fiddler and one of his tricks was to break bow hairs on purpose (on a sacrificial bow of course) for dramatic effect. He'd cut the broken ones after each show and use it again until they were all gone. I remarked that the bow had gotten pretty bare and I wasn't sure he'd have anything left to make sound with after he broke some on the next set, but he told me it didn't matter. He had enough rosin on the stick to get through the song.
This is the first time I've ever watched a video and wished there was a second thumbs up button to give this two thumbs up. Thanks for brightening up my day!
That part with human hair reminds me of the time my friends and I used the (long) hair still attached to our heads on our violins and violas 😂 it really does work! Great fun. Though as someone who now takes much better care of their hair than I did then, I really can't recommend it - using shed hairs would be best 👍
As a cellist, I can confirm that when you get a bow rehaired, you have to rosin it like all hell. That said, I do know people who seem to rosin that much *every single day* and just leave, like, a cloud of rosin wherever they go. =V
hahaha this is great I bought a bow for my guitar years ago and never got it to work.....I never bought the rosin! Now I love rosin! Thanks Mr. James! 🤘😎🤘
Delightful creative nothingness 💖🎶🎻 It's the first time that I have watched one of your videos all the way through. You have a nutty chemistry with James. I play guitar, but I play with a lot of fiddle players and have a buddy who builds fiddles and restrings bows. I think a bow with the harp to play a drone while you pluck sounds cool. Have you made a video of tuning the harp? How well does it stay in tune with temperature and humidity changes?
Just started watching your videos and they’re really awesome and informative! My friend is a huge guitar pedal nerd so this is cool seeing all the different pedals that are out there! Keep up the awesome videos! Oh and Mr.James was a great addition to this episode!
I tried playing cello when I was younger and I can attest you can always need more rasin. I stopped because my fingers had not enough strength to hold the strings
Always fantastic content with you guys :3 and I'm not just saying that, I have honestly enjoyed every single video I've seen from u guys! definitely not bc I simp over the BEAUTIFUL harp lady or anything. Only for the music of course 👉👈
Make sure to rosin that like button...
Thank you Mr. James
Thank you Mr. James
Thank you Mr. James
Thank you, Mr. James.
Thank you Mr. James!
this guy's bow skills are so good. This episode is like different orchestra sections vibing together, I like how wholesome that is.
Haha thanks so much! He is amazing
Thanks for showing us all the bows, Mr. James
Thank YOU!
Gracias, Señor Jaime
As a cellist, I can confirm, it *is* the rosin that made it work. The bow itself is just to throw everyone off the scent.
This has all the energy of instrument petting zoos, and I'm here for it! Mr. James was an awesome guest, Emily!
lmfao we need to bring back Mr James!!!!
The absolute chaos of the scissors bit had me rolling lol. Playing the cello with the tiny cello is also masterfully brilliant. Awesome video!
Hahaha thank you so much!!! This was such a fun video to make!!!
@@emilyharpist I love how goofy that dude was. Fun video.
@@emilyharpist lol, it was like you were waving around a loaded gun

Ha! I wasn't expecting a gurdy mention in the comnents :) I thought using the e-bow and sustain sounded closer to a hurdy-gurdy since it is continuous sound.
Some say Mr James is still maniacally applying rosin to this very day
I can confirm this to be true
But where?
Applying rosin is the cellist equivalent of shoegazing.
@@Sushi_Dinner Shoegazing is so you can press the pedals
The eBow didn’t work in the cello because you forgot to apply rosin to it
that is very funny
Wow i didnt think of that
I am cracking up! Lol
OF COURSE!
Thanks for showing us all your bows Mr. James!
Thank you Mr. James! 😂

@noyd Wtf are you even on about? 10/10 comment
Mr James is a true legend! thanks for bringing him on
Such a legend!!!!
You should bring back Mr. James and play a harp/cello duet, each through different effects pedals!
My next video features Mr. James playing through a REALLY cool pedal!
Well but then you need to make shure to have a Lot of rosin
Amazing that the world didn't crumble apart when he played the Cello with the violin.
So glad Mr. James could drop by the class and teach us about the big violin.
slowly, one by one, emily is bringing chaos to every instrument she can get her hands on
Lmfaooo IM TRYING!!
No instrument is safe. Muahahaha.
This video has soo much chaotic energy and I love it! And thank you Mr. James! (I hear rumors he's still applying rosin to this day)

Mr. James ripping out his hair and playing cello with it was frankly mindblowing.
james applying that rosin had the strongest little cousin energy and i can't elaborate any further because im still half asleep
I'm so happy you did the video with Rob Scallon, I love your energy and Mr. James was so chaotic, it was great
This is quality content. Mr. James needs to be a regular guest.
I think Emily brings out the ridiculous in her collaborators and it's the best thing

The moment he tunes that violin during the guitar solo is like the apex of comedy for me. I can't get enough of that moment.
Thanks for showing us all the bows, Mr. James!
the tiny bow at the end killed me! that's so cool :D
Haha.. a complete chaos! We love it! Even though our bow doesn’t really work on the harp, we really enjoyed this video. Thanks guys 😀😆
Thanks Mr. James for bringing all of your best bows today
That was fun, Mr. James 🙂
I love how everything with Mr. James devolved at the end. All the rosin, using a violin as a bow.
