was about to buy the Tiffen but after watching this, will buy the K&F. much more subtle and I think better image quality overall. PLUS cheaper: what's not to like here? Thanks, man. Very helpful.
Just saw another video that showed the contrary. I believe this one though. K&F it is :)
The review and comparison that I was searching for! Great video!
Wow. Uploaded a day before I searched for this comparison. Thanks for making this! a perfect comparison!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful :)
I own several K&F Black Mist filters....they work very well, & I get the results I want.
The first of your videos I’ve seen and it was really helpful with so many different examples! Thank you! I like the K&F too!
Thanks so much, I'm glad to hear that! :)
Good review in-depth review. On the strength of that I ordered the 1/4 and 1/8 twin pack which works out to a good saving.
Thanks for reviewing this! i definitely needed this video
Wow. I really need this comparison. Thanks bro! Cheers!
K&f also has the black mist PRO which comes in a traditional square case. I have both the non pro and pro version, the effect seems the same
Great job on the comparison samples. thanks for the info!
Awesome review, thank you for this! Could you update us on your opinion on K&F Mist 1/4 vs 1/8, if you get your hands on the second one?
Thanks for the video.
I use 77mm Tiffen Black Mist filters on my 85mm f/1.4 Nikkor lens and on my 180mm RB67 medium format lens.
If I were buying black mist filters today, I would get the lower priced K&F.
Great video with some quite useful examples ~
This was perfect. I was about to buy another Tiffen version when I saw these K&F at about 2/3 the cost and wondered if they were any good, so this helped inform my buying decision-I’ll go with the K&F. I’m probably weird as I always screw on filters with my left hand even though I’m right handed, so the case works for me at least😂
I always screw also 😂😂😂
@@leysmart7593 You should be a comedian.
Thanks for the awesome detailed review, I was also going to buy Tiffen, but after seeing this, K&F works well for me!
Thank you for the review! Helped me a lot :)
This is the comparison I was looking for.
However, I would have much preferred the different sample images in full screen view with their respective filter sizes (K&F 1/8 vs Tiffen 1/4 vs Tiffen 1/8) , rather than showing them in the Capture One software.
Thanks for your video! It was very helpful. I noticed that K&F have a K,D and X series. From what I can tell it has something to do with nano coating layers and wether it comes with a case. Price is definitely different tho just a heads up as I haven’t seen anyone talk about them :)
x is there prime series, the one that can compete with tiffen, nisi etc. it is like the hoy pro line
Thank you for that video! I choose the K&F Concept 1/4 filter ☝🏼
I believe that the this copy of the 1/8 from Tiffen might be missassembled, i've seen some reviews saying that. And if you compare with other reviews this one comes out really strong, idk. But thanks for the review, love your vids.
Thanks for the heads up! It's possible I guess, but I have 2 of them actually and they both seem similar... Anyway, thanks for watching :)
Thanks for doing this, very helpful.
Thoughtful and articulate comparison.
Thanks for the comparison man🔥
Thanks for the great review!
Thanks for the video! Would you recommend the K&F Black Mist 1/8 over the Tiffen BPM 1/8? Thanks
Good review, I would like to see the haida compared too.
Great video. Helps me alot
Thanks so much for this review
I have a knf nd theyre not too bad and from what I've seen compares well to the super expensive nds
Excellent comparison, thank you so much. Really helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I got the same effect by dusting enricheded white flour on an extra inexpensive UV filter. Give the same blooming effect with good clarity. Extra dose of flour dusting and more intesive the effect without spending a dime. Of course, not for outdoor rainy weather. Haha
Interesting solution! I like it :)
Great video - thank you!
Very helpful, thanks!
5:27 i was expecting less bloom effect on 1/8 but turns out it's more harsh or it's just how I see it
Very useful video, can you mount additional filters (example ND filters) on the K&F Concept Black Mist?
K&F offers a pro mist and ND combo lens. Think it’s 2-32 ND.
Nice video. I try to save that money and add the effect digitally for now. Since you can always add it, but not remove if you film with a filter like that.
hmm. While that's true, the edited effect doesn't look as beautiful as the effect you get with the filter. But I get your point
Great content :)
Hi, K&F has a shimmer filter. I can't find any video on it. They are saying it's a Glimmerglass alternative. Could you please review this?
Ya that back lighting blur reminds me of my Cataract days before I got Ocular implants. I never was attracted to black diffusers because of my Cataract P T S D.
Awesome video.. :D
I had a question can I use the K&F VND filter with the k&F mist filter? are there threads to stack filter on each other?
yes!
My KNF nano VND cannot be stacked. I can only put it on after I add my pro mist filter
@@andrewchristian3017 Usually the ND filter should come last in the stack anyhow.
What are your thoughts on the Urth diffusion filters?
Did you review the k and f 1/8? Isn’t that their least amount one
I saw another tests where K&F was worse than Tiffen or Nisi. I think Tiffen has the darkest blacks and shadows so I'm wondering about this test how K&F was better. I have 1/8 K&F and planning to buy an 1/4 filter. I think the same filter can works different according to lightning situations. If light comes from the side it is sowns between layers. This causes "fog" over the image.
Bravo K&F!!!
If I’m not mistaken, the PolarPro filters are meant to be kept inside of the case while they’re being screwed on. Do you think that may be that was the idea with this one? Hence, why it’s face down inside of the ribbing?
It could be what they were going for but the hold isn't tight enough to be confident the filter won't fall out and/or it would end up being a little awkward to do with the camera upside down.
Hi I have one question, can you stack nd filter on top k&f filter?
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the strengths labeled on your tiffen mist filters, despite what people are saying. The shots are are all tight and the apparent effect between 1/8 and 1/4 seems right in my experience. The 1/4 does make a difference and blooms more.
With a subject that is distant from the camera, the difference will be more obvious.
Appreciate the input! Like you said I was fairly certain I double and triple checked them haha. I’ll be quickly comparing the K&F 1/8 too today or tomorrow so I’ll try and get a wider shot with a bit more distance to the lights.
@@ScottDumas did you end up checking out 1/8 filters? Appreciate any input on 1/8 filters
With k&f concept, always try looking for it on aliexpress / ebay, takes longer but i got mine for about 35-40 euro shipped
Would tiffen's Glimglass filter bring the similar effect as K&F's as Glimglass filters claims to bring subtle effect on highlights while retaining overall contrast as much as it can
Tiffen has an infographic on it. I think it has more softness in resolution over halation softness (halation remains sharp but blooms). But not loads quite similar?
About the compartment complain with the k&f: what if you open up the box the other way around? Is this possible/practicable?
I got exactly the same idea … I don t understand Scott s restriction about It … you just have to reverse it :)
Hi Scott, can you add another filter in front of the K&F?
Thinking on the comb Mist+ND.
Yep! There are filter threads on the front of the filter :)
Freewell also makes a 2in1 nd mist
2:16 it is made like this so that you can screw it on lens with its base attached and then take off the base plate so that there is no contact with hand.
In all honesty, if that’s true I like it even less. It’s not actually “stuck” in there, it’s just enough so it doesn’t slide around side to side, so tilting it up or otherwise trying to screw it on just like that is a recipe for disaster... at least I’d never be comfortable or confident with it.
1/8 is the best choice for 90% of cases unless you are looking for a specific/intentional effect.
no
Could always be particular shooting conditions but I prefer the K&F. I'd be tempted for a 1/2 model though to up the strength. As for the 1/8 being stronger than the 1/4 that seems strange and am tempted to ignore the 1/8 in case it is some bad batch?
I wondered about a bad batch too, which is a little concerning regarding quality control.
Good video, but I think you may have confused the 1/8 for the 1/4...
Many people have said so, but I'm fairly certain I checked and re-checked. I have 2 copies of it, and maybe there's something wrong with one or both? I got the K&F 1/8 filter now as well, so I'll re-test them all and post some comparison photos up on my facebook page if you're interested :) facebook.com/scottdumasreviews
1/4 is this subtle. I wonder what kind of effect their 1/8 is.
Great review, thanks Scott, this is really useful. I agree, the K&F looks better all round to me. Have you tried their ⅛ at all? I'm thinking of starting out with that for a subtle effect, mainly for smoothing skin tones more than adding bloom from lighting. Then maybe add the ¼ afterwards.
I haven't tried any besides the 1/4 from K&F but I like more of a subtle effect too, so it might be the best way to go to start off :)
@@ScottDumas Thanks Scott 👍
@@ScottDumas in the end I had to go for the ¼ as I can't find an ⅛ anywhere. It seems K&F don't make one, though Alibaba does!
@@alzibaba you can find 1/8 on Aliexpress
@@jiyeonhyomin Thanks very much!
So if you're going to show what effect the filter has on skin, why keep the backlights on? I'd really appreciate knowing just how much the filter softens. It would be nice to have a much closer framing showing the skin texture without the filter or backlights and then see one with the filter for comparison. Thanks.
Hi # can we stack circular filters? Say I wanted to use a variable nd and mist filter, is that possible?
It is, but it will sometimes cause vignetting depending on your lens/focal length
5:24 I thought the 1/4 should be the lower one ( more diffused one)? and the 1/8 is on the right on top?
That's what I thought too, but I tested it a few times and these are the results I got... makes me wonder if something is wrong with one of the filters somewhere, but I actually have two of the tiffen filters and tried them both with the same results.
@@ScottDumas at 9:50 the result is as expected though. I am guessing the direction of the light made the 1/8 become more diffused in this case for some physics reason.
I think there is a problem with your Tiffen 1/8. It should be more subtle than the 1/4
Others have said the same thing. I actually have two 1/8 filters and both showed the same behavior in these tests... I will get the K&F 1/8 soon to compare and I'll post updates including both of the Tiffen 1/8 filters I have just to be safe. I'll probably just make a quick post on my Facebook page about that so if you're curious be sure to follow the page :) facebook.com/scottdumasreviews
I have same tiffen 1/8 & 1/4 and 1/8 seems to be more bloom than 1/4
What about flares problems? i tried the tiffen 1/8 pro mist. it was terrible
i’ve had the same issue, i returned my tiffin BPM filter and i’m hoping that KF’s are much better.. well see
I think 1/8 BK Would look better, Don't you?
What happens if you add also a polarizer before the Black mist? Do you have a pre contrast hi definition frome the polarizer to who is added the atmosphere from the mist, so the details don't get wasted and you keep the etmosphere?
Lol thats good question tho
What camera bag was that?
It's the Wotancraft Pilot messenger bag :) One of my favorites.
Screw it on the lens without removing from the case..?
It doesn't actually hold in the case enough for that- it might be possible but it would be awkward and risky
@@ScottDumas fair, would have been cool if it had. Oh well.
Something is wrong with those tests , I got a k&f filter 1.4 and the whole image is lifted up and very strong compared to tiffen , tiffen usually keeps the bkacks down but in this video something is wrong .
I'm more interested in 2 things now after watching this video.
1. How does K&F 1/8th compares to Tiffen 1/8
2. How does K&f 1/8th = K&f 2-32 variable nd (stacked) costing roughly $120 look vs Freewell ND MIST filter as $110
If you can test it out, it will be a huge help!
2. I'll actually be getting the K&F 1/8 very soon and I'll post a comparison on my Facebook page facebook.com/scottdumasreviews if you want to check it out :)
2. I don't have those particular filters to test but I do have some others from Freewell (as well as K&F) and in general Freewell make amazing filters so I would not hesitate to recommend theirs.
@@ScottDumas ah that's great nut I don't use Facebook unfortunately. Can you post same photo on UA-cam too ? Thank you.
Don't bother with the K&F Nano-X line and get the Nano-K. Much cheaper and really well made and multi-coating. I believe Nano-K has marginal to no benefit and is 99% marketing for those who want 'the best'. I use the Nano-K 1/8 and 1/4 on my Fujifilm lenses. The 1/8 is perfect for everyday use and quite subtle. The 1/4 is best at daytime if you want a more pronounced effect. At nighttime the 1/8 is strong enough.
Had the Tiffen before. Very expensive, no visible difference at all and I had several quality control issues with Tiffen (returned twice due to scratches and dirt).
Note that the K&F 1/8 is about the same strength as Tiffen 1/4, so K&F is slightly stronger effect.
✌...
Your video is hard to follow; should have labelled the filters used on the pictures themselves. But thank you, helped me regardless.
Thanks for your your review Scott ! This made me buy the filter =)
Here a dance video that I made with this k&f black mist 1/4 : ua-cam.com/video/Mut3FxU7EH0/v-deo.html
If you guys want to take a look and see the result on a video
Enjoy :D
It should not be called a black filter if it doesn't keep your black point
Your promist filters might be mislabeled by the factory. I suggest you email Tiffen with some samples maybe they will give you the proper strength filters for free. Tell them you did a UA-cam review and want to redo it if your filters are made wrong by the factory because you don't want to mislead your viewers. Lemme know how it goes if you do contact them.
Flipping the filter from the case is the dumbest complaint i have ever heard of.
So ignore it. But in real use it's one more chance to get fingerprints on it or drop it. This is a review- I'm supposed to point out any little weird thing and it feels weird that grabbing it out from the case it's not oriented in the way you'd screw it onto your lens. Doesn't mean don't buy it. More like feedback for K&F.
doobie aware of your lighting
Worst filters ever, gives the look of dirt on your lens, stay away!
Dude nobody cares much, make it shorter and more solid by swapping on filters back n forth u talk alot.
