Papadakis & Cizeron were extremely dominate ever since their 2015 World and European wins (coming from 13th and 15th the year before, respectively). They only narrowly missed the gold medal at the 2018 Olympics to Canadians Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir.
Sinitsina & Katsalapov were usually a bit more traditional in their musical and style choices and maybe that stems from their coach Alexander Zhulin who himself probably feels he lost the Olympic gold because he went outside his comfort zone.
The most recent match up between Papadakis & Cizeron and Sinitsina & Katsalapov was the Grand Prix Final where "Vicky and Nicky" came in last, with Gabby & Guillaume winning the title. The last 4 match-ups between them since the 2018 Olympic season were won by Gabby & Guillaume by 11 points or more.

Gabriela et Guillaume méritaient largement la première place
Gabriella and Guillaume are like a poem on ice; they have elegance and beautiful lines. In comparison to the Russians, who have a magnificent interpretation, there are certain elements where they appear heavy. Gabriella and Guillaume will remain number 1 for a long time. No one compares to them. Also, the French team finished 2nd because of a mistake in one of the elements, while there are other programs that are perfect. 🙄
