ok i THOUGHT I knew the scoring rules for this era but maybe I'm wrong. For quite some time, it was Compulsory 30%, Short 20%, Long 50%. If this is the case...Potsch only won compulsories, while Fratianne won both short and long. Potsch = 1, 4, 3 = (0.3+0.8+1.5) = 2.6; Fratianne = 3,1 2 = (0.9+0.2+1) = 2.1. This would give Fratianne the gold. Do I have my percentages wrong for that year of competition?

Dick Button is (still) unsurpassed as the finest skating commentator there has ever been for English-speaking countries. Not only does his commentary perfectly communicate technical elements and performance to viewers, but gives us information about judging, about coaching...most importantly, though, he provides this fairly to non-US/Canadian skaters as well. He gets us to root for GOOD SKATING, no matter what country the skater represents. I wish he were still doing this - I grow tired of Tara and Johnny...the post 2004(?) CoP commentary is really dull. Points, points, points. There's not much enjoyment when the judging is so mathematical (The 6.0 system was math too but you all know what I mean). There's no mystery in the artistic marking, trying to impress both blocs of judges with technique that can't be faulted, and artistry that has to be respected. For the young skating fans out there, I hope you'll spend some time watching competitions from the 90s particulary, but 80s were good too. Midori Ito's (JPN) international debut in 1988 started the first real technical revolution for ladies after she was the first woman to land the triple axel...Tonya Harding was the first woman to catch up to her in 1991, and then Miki Ando (JPN), the first woman to land a quad, in 2002. Go watch these!

1:22:00 & 1:39:30 I saw Sachie Yuki and Juri Ozawa a few times in the very early 1980s in the junior ranks, first time in 1981/2 or so at Ennia/Prague (I think). They were both sensational jumpers, trained by a relatively unknown coach, Mr. Moriyama-very much like the Eteri girls today. Those skinny girls (at the time) could do 3-3, 3F and 3L left and right, and Sachie was even landing 3Lz and 3A, although their overall skills left much to be desired. It looks like their triple jumps left them as they physically matured and their skating remained unpolished.
