  • In today’s video we return to the subject of true horology. Most watch enthusiasts love to throw that word around but fail to understand that timepieces on the wrist are only a tiny part of a story going back to the beginning of human civilization.
One of the most profound ways horology has left its mark on history is its influence and impact on art. In this episode I discuss the legendary English artist Wright of Derby and how he captured one of the most important moments in the evolution of horology and science. I then explore why the Orrery is perhaps the greatest of all complications and why Derby is one of the greatest artists of the 18th century.

I'm actually from Derby, born and lived there all my life (apart from the last 2 years as I live in Abu Dhabi now!). I've seen both the painting and the Orrery many times! Next time I go to the Derby museum I will have a whole new appreciation thanks to this video! I didn't realise the Orrery in the Derby museum wasn't the original though. Nice to see Derby getting some love, the industrial revolution itself began in Derbyshire! Cromford Mill (in Cromford, Derbyshire) was the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill developed by Richard Arkwright in 1771. So, in a way, one could argue that Derbyshire was the birth place of the modern, industrialised world!
    Thanks TGV! :)

Hoot AL here, an old country gent who is proud to be a part of your "urban gentry." Very much enjoyed learning about the English artist, Wright of Derby. My wife and I will be in London for two weeks in May. I look forward to viewing his work in person at the British Museum.
Thank you for your reply to my message that related my Swiss heritage and its connection to horology. That message went on and on...So I didn't get to mention the watches I have bought since discovering your channel. What most appeals to me is the Hamilton Field Watch. But I could not justify the price. So I made a 180 degree turn, buying a mimic of the face with the CASIO MRW20H (black resin) at just $16! Undoubtedly a great value but it just did not scratch my itch. Next, I purchased the SIEKO SNZG15 and the ORIENT Defender--both satisfy my lust for better quality but not fully. So mainly based upon your recommendation, I pulled the trigger for the SEIKO SARB033. What a beautiful watch! I am declaring a moratorium on buying more watches (for now). I will concentrate on watch straps to compliment my present collection. I am aware my jump into horology is not a huge leap for a real collector, but for me, I am thrilled. Thanks again for your videos--such great content, good humor, thoughtful commentary, sound advice, and truly stellar production quality. Sincerely, Hoot AL

Hi TGV, well, I did as you suggested last week and checked out your video on this masterpiece. Another fine piece of work on your part I have to say. Just the motivation I needed to take a drive into town this week, head to the Derby Art Gallery and sit myself down in front of this most memorable piece of art. And stay a while in contemplation. While checking the time on my Orient Howard, no doubt! Stuff like this is the reason I seldom watch television these days. Looking forward to the next one. Best regards from Derby, England. Trev

Thank you for drawing my attention to Wright. I won't say I pride myself on my knowledge of Art History but it is a subject near and dear to my heart. Having said that, I can honestly say that I have never heard of, nor seen any of Wright's work. I will definitely keep an eye out for the book you recommend on him. Looks like a treasure I've missed out on. Thank you Tristano for the heads up. That's one thing I like about your videos - not just the same old, same old watch reviews. Ciao, John

I'm relatively new to your channel TGV, but the plus side to that is that I still have so many of your brilliantly produced videos to watch. This gem caught my eye because I am reading a book at the moment about the 18th century clockmaker and natural philosopher John Whitehurst FRS who lived and worked in Derby for over forty years. He was a good friend of Joseph Wright and a member of the Lunar Society. The caption to the painting A Philosopher Lecturing Upon An Orrery in the book, states that the lecturer may indeed be John Whitehurst and that the figure on the far right may be Joseph Wright himself. John Flamsteed FRS, the first Astronomer Royal, was born six miles from Derby, and the house he lived in was rebuilt and subsequently lived in by John Whitehurst and later became the last home of Joseph Wright! Another, among many interesting connections, is that John Whitehurst was the brother-in-law of the well known and respected Liverpool clockmaker Joseph Finney. If you are not already aware of the book it is simply titled 'John Whitehurst' the author is Maxwell Craven. A great book well worth checking out. Happy Christmas and lets all hope for a better 2021. Oh, and how about some vids about your clocks as you've said you have a collection. Best wishes from the U.K. Chow.

I don’t know if it qualifies, but my favorite sort of horological art would be Salvador Dali and his famous melting clocks.

    Hi Tristano,
The Abeler family from Germany has produced 26 watchmakers and jewelers over many generations. Georg and Jürgen Abeler are the best known from the last century. The watch museum in Wuppertal goes back to the private collection of the Abeler family. Unfortunately, the watch museum was closed a few years after the death of Jürgen Abeler and auctioned the historically significant collection. Soon after, the family business was abandoned after 178 years. Jürgen Abeler has also worked historically and scientifically and has written several books. As far as I know, the books are in German only, but maybe I'm wrong about that. The books "5000 Jahre Zeitmessung (5000 Years of Timekeeping)" and "Meister der Uhrmacherkunst (Masters of Watchmaking)", a compilation of all master watchmakers in the German-speaking world, are absolutely recommendable.

Very inspirational video. I like the contemplation of influences that led to the different epochs in art. Before the invention of photography the realistic depiction of the natural world was the pinnacle of artistic expression. Later on psychological and sublime aspects of observation dominated the work of impressionists, expressionists and modern artists. Dali's melting clocks come to mind. Please continue your videos about cultural aspects of horology.

Amazing review. Haven’t heard of this painter before but watching his work rang 2 bells for me. One related to my own preferred style of photography, the Chiaro-Scuro that I practice a lot and the other is of me being an amateur astronomer loving everything related to the sky. So this book is a must have for me. Hope I can find it.
By the way, I had a chance to see the 1 or so million dollar Astronomia and was literally blown away

Interesting Video & well thought out as always... The painting oozes a sense of calm and intrigue... Certainly puts you in the moment and in the minds of the people present.. I personally love it.. Very informative... 👍 BMJ ENGLAND 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Hi TGV
Stunning art work indeed. From a time when philosophy, science and religion was integrated in an effort to establish a true world view. How did we ever loose that angle?!?🧐
    Keep up the good work👍

Very true, it might be the end times, then again, even Socrates thought that of his time!
I guess we all just have to do our part.
      Thank you Kjeld,
      Best regards,
      TGV

A pleasure Ryan and hearing that you enjoyed it makes it all worth it, thank you.
The UK has so much to be proud of, especially when it comes to horology, it's such a shame it does not get more credit. Oh well, I will have to do my bit to try and correct that ;-)
      Best regards,
      TGV

Great subject matter tristan , horology was a huge part of science .....leaps forward in clockmaking was always followed by leaps forward science ....
