Andrew deserves an Oscar nomination for his performance here, he's damn perfect and did a great job playing Jonathan Larson
I 100% agree and I love your profile picture. "Last Night in Soho" is my favorite film of the year and "tick, tick... boom" is my favorite musical adaptation of the year as well!!
I so agree with you!! I can’t stop watching it
So true
Tbh he deserves the Oscar award for his performance.
@@viveksunilrao9360 agreed .. I think Lin deserves one for the directors stand point..
In my opinion this is Andrew Garfield's best performance of his career. The emotion and heart he put into this performance, he embodied Jonathan Larson and I'm sure he's proud of what came from this movie. Andrew Garfield deserves an Oscar for his performance at least a nomination.
Really love this movie! if you haven't, go and watch Hacksaw Ridge! His performance in that movie was also nominated for an Oscar.
Under the silver lake is probably my favorite movie of his, but I agree this is his best performance.
So true
Silence was another good one
Andrew has delivered many incredible performances. For me, his role in Silence was the best.
For those that don't know - the woman in the teal scarf at 1:04 is Julie Larson (the real Jon Larson's sister), who produced the movie and was heavily involved. She praised Andrew Garfield's performance, and even said that watching him perform at times felt like she was seeing her brother again.
Wow!
:'( i don't cry

They must perform this live at the Oscars.
Yes yes yes
YEEEEEES
Ikr I want to him Andrew sing live so bad
Why, no one watches the oscars anymore
Absolutely.
This ending had no right to hit this hard, this whole movie had no right to hit this hard
Jonathan Larson's story isn't just his, it's everyone's. It's an inspiration to all those who are struggling, feeling worthless, burdened, afraid of running out of time, its an inspiration for them to keep at it because sooner or later you will make it, we are all surrounded by despair, by fear but we can still choose to be driven by love, love for our work, love for our friends and family and most importantly, love for ourselves.
This one scene is just so well done, he doesn't have the success he's dreamed of, he does not have a second chance of bringing back the love of his life whom he himself drove away, his best friend is sick and has difficulty expressing his identity, many of his friends have died, he's 30 and time is running out for him but he still chooses to be driven by love, to do what he loves and its beautiful and what's better he's supported by the people he loves, people who have helped him hone his craft, his inspirations, his mentor, all of them and that final tune of Happy Birthday is so weirdly triumphant, it just works.
I love the story of Lin throwing a shoe at Andrews head when he found out he could sing.
Where can I find this story? I want to hear or read about it.
@@michaelcox1305 I think Andrew mentioned it when he was on Stephen Colbert.

@@jeroenuwland Thank you!
Agreed
They’re all surprisingly great in different ways. Andrew because we‘ve never seen him sing before. Vanessa because of how much she’s grown from HSM. Joshua because I’ve never heard of him before but now I’m obsessed with how rich his voice is.
Joshua is amazing!! Look for some of his work on Broadway. He's an amazing performer
Robin De Jesus???? But yes, I agree
@@themoviecritic1092 oh yes, DEFINITELY. The chills I felt during real life. And Alex’s voice in Come To Your Senses was perfect I love that they performed it as a duet. I just didn’t mention them cuz they weren’t in this song. Andrew Garfield was a standout but the entire cast definitely pulled their own weight.
@@55MikeMusic I found out he has been in every LMM musical. When I saw that he played Aaron Burr I was like “of COURSE he did”.
Joshua is incredible! His voice reminds me of Darius Rucker mixed with Jesse L Martin.
Seeing Stephen Sondheim (at least, Bradley Whitford playing him) in the audience watching Jonathan Larson perform his final song just hits more now than when the movie came out.
RIP Stephen and Jonathan. Your works will live on
I was crying when he heard Stephen message. Having the aprobation of you ídol is more satisfaying than sucess
They're writing musicals for the angels now 🌼
Hering the real Stephen Sondheim on the answering machine got to me
At first I was weirded out that another actor was playing Sondheim but as soon as I heard Bradley Whitford talk and act, any and all doubts were gone! He perfectly captured Sondheim’s mannerisms
Andrew Garfield is criminally underrated
I see these silly statements everywhere. Who underrates him exactly? He's extremely successful, well recognized and well paid A-list actor. He worked with world class directors such as Gibson, Fincher and Scorsese as the main star of their very successful movies, and all of them praised him for his performance. It's all well deserved, but that's hardly "criminally underrated".
@@lurras6666 Not that popular? Seriously? Tons of interviews, invites to late night shows, he just did wired autocomplete adding to other stuff you can watch on YT with him. Recently his hilarious constant denials of his involvement in new Spider-Man movie became a meme, because no one actually believes him. And yeah he's really more pupolar than Tobey Mcguire in that regard, people really wants this cameo to happen. Right now he has more attention than he wants probably, cause people really bug him about this Spider-Man shit and they should leave poor guy alone. You want more?
@@GiltleyRage its like almost every week he has new interviews 🤣
@@lurras6666 its just not everyone knows him i think this guy deserves a bigger spotlight
@@GiltleyRage Thank you for bringing some sense to this "underrated" nonsense! They're absolutely ridiculous
I feel like Andrew did this movie out of pure heart and soul not even caring about a paycheck, you can tell how much fun he genuinely had in this like he was putting on his own Broadway performance
I mean maybe... but he definitely got paid for this shit lol
yea this and his dying mother was in the audience and he felt blessed singing to her before her upcoming death from cancer
@@smmshoe his real mother? Sorry i dont really up to date but is his mother died?
@@iamgorgeous yup from cancer. and she was on the crowd while he was singing.
@@smmshoe I don't think this can be true, his mother died in 2019 and production on this movie didn't begin until early 2020. They started just before the pandemic.
Who else is here after Andrew was robbed of his Best Actor Oscar?
The atrocity.
100%
Loved Will Smith in King Richard and thought he was deserving. However the Oscar’s should’ve called an audible and gave Andrew Best Actor after the nonsense Will pulled that day.
I'm here and Andrew deserved that Oscar
Me
The editing done at 2:16 always gives me chills; just hearing that lyric "How can you make someone take off and fly?" then that image appearing immediately after answers that question. Really powerful
I know right it made me cry the first time I watch this film. Rent is so much more and powerful.
can I ask who are the people in that picure?
@ it’s the original cast of rent, who he unfortunately never got to see perform his show live
Is it the original stage cast? I ask because I only saw the movie and I recognize several of the actors (like the two on the far right who have been a bunch of movies). If so, it makes me love the movie more to learn they used some of the stage cast.
@@rossbooth4635 yes, this is the original 1996 cast. The 2005 movie features almost all of them, only two of the main gang were recast due to various reasons (Mimi and Joanne), the rest are state actors first and movie/TV - later. Almost all of these people jumpstarted their careers because of RENT.
The fact that Larson didn't live like 15 more hours to see at least once the thing he created that literally changed the world makes my heart bleed every time I think about it.
Who know that Andrew Garfield went from playing Spider-Man to Jonathan Larson in tick tick boom. He has an amazing voice. This movie should get a ton of Oscar nominations

Dr. Parnassus, social network, never let me go, hacksaw ridge, breathe???
3:14 is the part that made me cry. The whole bridge was composed so perfectly and portrayed perfectly. The message is so moving and the emotional tears shown by Michael is so heart touching because it really reflected how proudly he felt that Jonathan achieved his goal. Andrew portrayed Jonathan so perfectly and did an extra 100% percent by adding his singing and piano talents. Andrew should win or at least be nominated for an oscar. Lin-Manuel miranda should have more recognition as well, this is literally his first film as a director. LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH!
it’s a cut away montage
It should also note that one of the biggest reasons this film is so good is because Lin was a big fan of Jonathan Larson. He was influenced by him.
This film was robbed...Best Picture...Best Director...and Andrew Garfield Best Actor....although had he won it would have been overshadowed by the whole Will Smith Extravaganza. He is the most talented actor of his generation...so his time will come...but this film, his performance...BRILLIANT
So many valid questions in this song. Genuinely got me thinking about the answers.
I’d been holding back tears throughout the last act of this movie, but at 2:16 I bawled. He truly woke up a generation and shook up the nation - but he never got to see it. Thank you, Jonathan Larson.
Now I'm crying again! Well said.
Why is this film not even being considered for the best picture Oscar? I’m seriously asking. This is one of the best films of the year. Is it because it’s a musical?
Just wait, it's not even award season yet. The nominations won't be announced till next year. Maybe March or April 2022
Well "Chicago" won Best Picture and "La La Land" almost did.
The nominations for awards haven’t been announced yet, but I have been incredibly frustrated at how critics have reviewed it well on its own, but don’t include it in “Best Film of 2021” lists. I think they’re biased towards films that only got a theatrical release, but that’s silly.
I mean it got Best Picture nominations at both the Golden Globes and Critic's Choice awards, both Oscar precursors.
@@chriscarpenter1920 La La Land maybe isn't a terrible movie but it's a crappy musical, very boring and the singing in it isn't even singing - it's whispering!!! Even during the grand opening number...
For me, this movie is an introduction to the musical genre and I am loving it. All of it, Andrew Garfield's playing, the story, songs and hopefully it is getting the attention it deserves. Grateful Netflix is making these kinds of gems for everyone to see.
For me theatre plays
Interesting!
For me is RENT introduce me to the musical theatre world and I never look back
I think Netflix is getting a hang of movie musicals because this is only their second movies musical after The Prom
Why do we play with fire?
Why do we run our finger
through the flame?
Why do we leave our hand on the stove-
Although we know we're in for some pain?
Oh, why do we refuse to hang a light
When the streets are dangerous?
Why does it take an accident
Before the truth gets through to us?
Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds.
Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer
Actions speak louder than words.
Why should we try to be our best
When we can just get by and still gain?
Why do we nod our heads
Although we know
The boss is wrong as rain?
Why should we blaze a trail
When the well worn path seems safe and
So inviting?
How-as we travel, can we
See the dismay-
And keep from fighting?
Cages or wings
Cages or wings
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds
Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer
Actions speak louder than words
Louder than, louder than
What does it take
To wake up a generation?
How can you make someone
Take off and fly?
If we don't wake up
And shake up the nation
We'll eat the dust of the world
Wondering why
Why
Why do we stay with lovers
Who we know, down deep
Just aren't right?
Why would we rather
Put ourselves through hell
Than sleep alone at night?
Why do we follow leaders who never lead?
Why does it take catastrophe
to start a revolution?
If we're so free, tell me why?
Someone tell me why
So many people bleed?
Cages or wings?
Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds.
Fear or love, baby?
Don't say the answer.
Actions speak louder than
Louder than, louder than
Louder than, louder than
Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
Ask the birds
Fear or love baby?
Don't say the answer
Actions speak louder than
Louder than, louder than, ooh
They speak louder
Louder than, louder than, aah
Actions speak louder than...
Words
Thanks
And he never sang before filming this movie... Mind. Blown.

I am not a huge musical fan. I tend to go for comedies and science fiction over dramas. And yet this movie is the most emotional experience I've had in ages. God damn.
That’s Jonathan Larson for you.
When I watched this the first 3 times, the piano happy birthday at the end was the icing on the cake to make me tear up. What an amazing movie
What I loved in that scene was the shot of Jonathan looking tearfully at the audience. It’s just bittersweet to me
Omg. This is me 😭💖
I’m so here for Andrew Garfield and Vanessa Hudgens’ journey from overlooked teen stars to solid musical theatre performers. 👏🏻
I really wouldnt say that Andrew Garfield is an "overlooked teen star". He has two academy nominations and has been in some very big productions the last 10 years with high praise.
It's so impressive that he is British and can even sing in an American accent
@@cam52391 he’s also American
This song shows how Andrew really puts his emotion and everything for the role. I just love the energy of this song (and of course the whole movie). Been watching it for 3rd time until now! The movie itself deserves awards!
I hope we get to see Andrew Garfield in future musicals cuz he’s really opened himself up to this genre.
I'm obsessed with the way he sings "birrdssss"
ikr! it’s so soothing that it gives me goosebumps every time!
This song is so beautiful 😭 It's like he's asking "cages or wings which do you prefer?" And the logical answer might seem simple like who would prefer cages right? But the examples he gives throughout the song, "why do we refuse to hang the lights when the streets are dangerous?" "Why should we try to be our best? When we can just get by and still gain?" It seems like we always choose suffering that's why he says "actions speak louder than words" and i love the lyric "why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution?" Like why do we wait things to burn down and why don't we take the action before something horrible happens? And the whole "fear or love" thing 😭 it's like if we fear then we would do the logical things like we won't try to be our best cause we can just get by and gain but we don't do that, we choose love and thus our actions are not logical. Humans are driven by love not by fear.
Love your interpretation ❤️❤️

This song has me in a chokehold right now. So magical, it makes you think these thoughts that need to be thought about more, and when Happy Birthday starts playing at the end I will always start to cry. It's so brilliant, Jonathan was ahead of his time
1:33 I love the addition of the side character in the final scene who loved their performance so much.

This and 30/90 are my favorite songs from Tick Tick... Boom. Andrew Garfield is an insanely talented actor and singer. I hope he gets an Oscar or at least nominated.
This song has really given me hope as I navigate my 20s trying to figure out who I am and what I should do with my life when everything about being an adult feels so hard. Thank you Jonathan Larson for giving hope to so many people!
I swear in god’s name that if Andrew doesn’t win the Oscar to best actor for this magnificent work, i will hate Hollywood the rest of my days
I second this!! I haven’t been this passionate about a potential nomination since rami malek in bohemian rhapsody!
Ehh as of now he is in like 3rd
Took decaprio ages to get recognition with a Oscar so hopefully not as long for Andrew
@@videogameguy1988 ehhh technically no he didn't. Leo, while a phenomenal actor, did not deserve a win until 2014 with the revenant. Every nomination he lost is because someone else gave a once in a lifetime type performance.
It'll either be him or Will Smith. Javier Bardem (Sp?) could be the dark horse winner though.
The more you listen to this song clip, the more you love the people's reactions at that moment. Micheal, his parents, his colleagues from the restaurants, the lady from the survey (don't remember well), his agent, Susan, all of their reactions to this Jonathan's Tick tick boom musical were the BEST of the bests. They were so amazed and so proud of Jonathan Larson. And Jonathan was also so happy to see all of them enjoying his music. This song gonna be my FAVOURITE of all time.
BTW, even Julie Larson, Jonathan Larson’s actual sister, is in the audience
This is a film that should really surely be the subject of the next Academy Award / Oscars ceremony. The energy and passion that has been put into this film is second to none.
Garfield, Hudgens, Shipp and the rest of the cast absolutely raised the roof with this masterpiece of a movie.
When Andrew Garfield sung the lyrics, "so many people bleed" he put his ENTIRE soul, body, mind, voice, and just his absolute everything into it. This will forever be my favorite Andrew Garfield movie because Andrew Garfield was just so f-ing amazing in it. He put his everything into this movie and that's why It turned out so great.
Also, great job to everyone else because this movie was just so amazing and everyone put their absolute ALL into this masterpiece. The ENTIRE team was just so incredible and really worked HARD to make this movie the best it could be. And they accomplished just that. So really what I'm trying to say is thank you for allowing us to rest our eyes on this treasure and thank you for sharing Jonathan Larson's story. And thanks to Jonathan for getting up everyday and still writing even when you were told not to because people didn't believe in you. Thank you for creating beautiful pieces of artwork for people to hear and see.

Thankyou Jonathan Larson for the amazing song and Thankyou Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, and Joshua Henry for delivering this song beuatifully 🖤
Thankyou Lin-Manuel Miranda for casting these talented actors…
Andrew Garfield deserves an Oscar for this !!!
Thank you, Garfield, Hudgens, and Henry, for giving this song the justice! It sounds a like from the original which how it's supposed to be.
"Why does it take catastrophe to start a revolution if we're so free? Tell me why - someone tell me why so many people bleed?"
hits home in a polarized USA today.
Finally I no longer need to open the film on Netflix to listen to the video-version of the song. Thank you!
One thing particularly beautiful about this for me is who is singing. Andrew, who comes into this project with a history of only dramatic or action movies and not musicals. Vanessa, who has such shining moments to prove she’s grown since her most recognizable movie, HSM. And then there’s Joshua Henry, who has the rich voice of a broadway veteran and together they create a story with perfectly balanced harmonies. I will never not cry at 3:39 . There are no words for the feeling. It just is.
Literally how was this not nominated for Best Picture
And how did Will Smith win an Oscar instead of Andrew Garfield
Lin Manuel, you sneaky man. You fit a curtain call into a movie! I see you, all those shots going from smaller roles to the biggest roles last, I see you!
In my opinion, tick, tick... BOOM! is undoubtedly one of the best musicals ever, and is a chef’s kiss to Musical Theater. Thank you Lin-Manuel Miranda, Andrew Garfeild, the amazing cast, and most of all, Jonathan Larson.
That's a very touching and sad movie. I feel like Lin captured a beautiful moment in Jonathan's life: the one where he doggedly, obsessively chased his dreams. And we've all gone through this when we become adults. Sometimes life changes our course, but we've already had a time when we struggled so hard for our dreams that we felt unstoppable.
Vanessa Hudgens is criminally underrated. What a beauty and voice 😍🥰❤
This song is so well written and still so relevant today. It was written in the 90s and yet if you had told me it was written 2 years ago I would’ve believed you
This song brought me to tears yesterday when I watched the film. I do not like musicals that much, and the fact that this made me cry, shows how good it is, and how great Andrew Garfield's performance is
Vanessa Hudgens is really amazing in this movie 🔥
Jonathan really was ahead of his time. This song is so applicable to today.
im not a theater kid and growing up not knowing this kind of magic can happen in a room performed by several people. but damn i wish i was because of this movie. not only andrew aced this but the entire cast and crew did such great job capturing everything and trying to tell the story as truthfully as possible. andrew gave his all to this project, lin really knew the materials he was given, and the cast!!! i cannot tell you how much i want the superbia songs to have official recording and being released because i couldn't get enough of it!! i will surely be jamming to the album for at least the next month (i didn't stop listening to hamilton for about 3 months straight, and in the heights for like 2 months, so yes)
This film was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I was sobbing by the end it was so moving and Andrew Garfield's performance is mind blowing. Give them ALL THE AWARDS!
Just give this guy an OSCAR !!!!!
This is right up there with Seasons of Love!
1:32 that dude was DIGGING it.
I don’t know if anyone who worked on this movie will ever see this, but I just want the creators to know how much their work here means to me. I can’t think of another movie in the past ten years or more that has affected me so deeply. I’m a 28-year-old disabled writer, and I connect to Jonathan Larson's story on a visceral level.
The desire to create regularly takes precedence over other things in my life, as does the notion that I may be running out of time. I especially love that moment in the Therapy scene when Jonathan starts writing a song in his head, right in the middle of trying to make up with Susan. It’s such a poignant moment that speaks to the obsessive nature of artists everywhere. Also, because I have a progressive disability, I've lost friends in my community too soon, and I worry every time one ends up in a hospital. Seeing Jonathan lose friends during the AIDS epidemic hit me on another note.
This movie is absolutely beautiful from start to finish, and it continually provides me with hope, empathy, and a reflection of my own story every time I watch it. And of course, I listen to the soundtrack religiously. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for putting this out in the world, and thank you Jonathan Larson for your spirit and artistic ingenuity.
Andrew Garfield can literally do anything - act, dance, and sing. I find him very smart too. It’s time we give him the flowers he much so deserves!
I've watched this movie only once, but find myself coming back to its music quite often. As soon as this one begins, as if on cue, my eyes and my heart become full. It's amazing to me how much power this song has on me.
I will forever be upset that 1. Andrew didn’t get his well deserved Oscar for this. 2. We didn’t get a live performance of this song at the Oscars
3:12 the best part 😍
the ending of this film makes me cry and sob every time. no matter how many times i watch this clip. it's just so beautiful, and honours jonathan larson in such a beautiful way.
I want them to perform this song at the Oscar. Andrew is an amazing actor and singer. Can't wai't to see him in a Brodway musical. I miss Jonathan. I wish he was here to see the influence he has on people all other the world. It was a great movie. Thank you Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Sadly that’s reserved for original songs and this is not an original song.
Andrew Garfield deserves the Oscar for his performance in this movie. He has shown his acting skills not just with a single type of movie. Its from musical, action, adventure, war, and drama. I get chills every single time I listen to this song.
If you ever had or have a dream, this movie, this song gives you the freedom to believe that through all the "NOISE" out there, there is still hope for a brighter day. New beginnings come when you make a decision to change. To make a change, "YOU" have to change first before you can ask someone else too. But once you start to change and people see the change in you, it will give them the confidence and the courage to change and become the one they always dreamed they would!! "Actions speak louder than words!"
I mean... Ive never *not* liked Andrew Garfield, gut he's really having a moment this past month... This was a fantastic role for him.
They should include that happy birthday song at the end that I ended up sobbing, I can't even stop my tears. Thanks for this movie and Jonathan Larson..I remember how I used to believe in myself regardless of what others say
