    Thank for providing me with the education in DIY blonde by very generously sharing your own personal experiences. I was blonde for many years, many years ago. I just went to the salon and never gave any thought to, or paid any attention to what my wonderful hairdresser did to get and keep my hair gorgeous. I've been dark brown now, my natural color, for about 10 years. My daughter's have been urging me to go back to a lighter color. After consistently watching you and a few others, I finally gained the confidence. It was a journey as well. Not perfection at first attempt. Now my hair is blonder and more flattering than I ever expected. Thank you beautiful blonde, smart girl!

    A protien filler is needed if your hair is pourous and your going darker so it grabs the color and not the undertone

    The worse part about my processed damaged platinum blonde hair is that regardless of whether I try to use a toner, semi permanent, or permanent hair color, none of them stays in my hair past a couple of washings anyway, so it's like a big waste of time and money on my hair to put anything on it right now with it being so porous.
    LOL about the only thing that did really latch on and decide to remain in my hair was the green color from using 100% pure virgin olive oil, (which I had no clue it could do that , lol until it did), so if you guys, or gals have platinum or light colored porous hair you probably will need to make sure you are using white or clear products/oils only, I recommend you do NOT use the 100% virgin oil straight out of the bottle to moisturize your hair, and I've even stopped using the Yellow oils like castor oil, or those with the light brownish tones like pure Argon Oil, or anything with any color to it at all. (whether they are mixed with other oils, conditioners, etc. or not because I don't want to risk transferring those tones into my hair). So now I use a good sulfate free shampoo weekly on my hair-(or use a good co-wash and no shampoo at all depending on the circumstance of what my hair looks and feels like). I use a clear clarifying shampoo as needed (but no more than weekly) for product build up, purple shampoo for 5 mins or less on my hair to remove brass (but no more often than 1x per week), I use a good conditioner in the shower, I use a good restorative leave in conditioner daily with No protein in it because my curly 3b hair doesn't seem to like many protein based products used in it along with a daily application of coconut oil only for moisture, and then I'm doing a weekly deep conditioning masque (prior to my weekly shampoo) with a white protein based product, followed by a good 5-10 minute deep moisturizing conditioner afterwards, and will decide at the end of the 6 week mark whether I need to repeat my Apogee 2 step protein treatment or not. This is my current routine, at least until I can get my hair's porosity issues straightened out some, get my hair's protein/moisture balance back in check, and get my hair back in better condition. So far this seems to be working pretty good, but had I know that going platinum blonde would have been such a PITA I would have stayed a brunette lol.

      Olaplex is a product that you add to lightener. It does miracle for very damaged hair. My hair has actually held color much better than it use to since using it😁 Hope this helps!

    Hairdresser just told me today my hair is very porous.. it makes sense now when researching, why I can NEVER leave toner on my hair longer than a few seconds without bad results.. literally I put it on and rinse immediately to get my favorite color! Also it takes ALL day to air dry which I never do anymore. Learning so much!! Thank you

    Hi Jess! I need your help! I recently got a hair color extraction to remove black dye and my hair turned orange, with several procedures i've gotten my hair to a golden but kinda brassy color, i went to the salon 2 times to get it toned to make it look like a natural ashy blond but nothing happens! The toner stays for like 2 days and it goes away, my natural hair color is medium-ash light brown and I have the shatush-balayage procedure to make it look that it's fading from my natural hair color to blond, the problem is that my hair got to a decent gold-ashy tone but my roots are still orange! What can I do? I was seconds away to get the ion color brilliance products but i've never dyed or toned my hair by myself and I didn't know which shades are right for me, also I don't want to keep damaging my hair :( what would you recommend? I'm desperate! Thank you!!!

    I Found your video really useful now as I accidentally bleached the top 10 cm of my hair to platinum blonde while the bottom stayed level 8 after having some black put on it by my former hairdresser several months ago( horror story). Your suggestion to go with the darker shade on top and lighter at the bottom was something I was considering but I was afraid it could come out uneven with a clean line of demarcation. Now I feel a bit more confident

    Your hair color is beautiful. LOL Yeah, that toner struggle is real. I worked for months to bleach my hair from a medium brown to a beautiful level 9-10. After trying several toners and it never looking right turning green, mudding my color out, etc. I decided to use Demi color on it as to not be constantly toning it so any processing damage could grow out. I picked a light neutral blonde, lol it turned medium brown, and also is still stuck in the back section of my hair-(I've tried everything except bleaching again to get it out but it isn't budging and most color removers won't remove Demi). Staying a medium brown to begin with would have saved me a ton of work, a ton of bleach damaged hair, and a ton of money considering I ended up right back where I started anyway 🙄

    I have some areas of my bleach hair, level 9 won't take toner or goes on uneven. Protien filler on hair didn't work, same uneven hair.I treated my hair with the best products, example olaplex system, protein, mask. Try to heal my porous hair, barely breakage. This time I am going to use protein filler in hair before toning and add protein filler to toner. Hope it work. Or tint hair with Kersacolor. What do you think protein filler on hair before and add protein filler in toner too.

    I finally did take the plunge, and my hair it still quite orange on the bottom where I had black non virgin color. Top hair is pretty blonde. (Funny story, I tried to tone my hair with T15 as I confused it with T14 from your video, and it turned my hair DARK brown. At which point I decided to bleach again. Should I continue with Titanium dye to tone (whilst my hair is repairing itself. It's damaged) or can I get a Colorsilk box or Demi Satin Blond from your video. My hair is 8 (ish) and 9 and 10, very patchy results due to hair being previously dyed black.

    • @os2841

      You didn't have to bleach it again. Toner washes out eventually so it would have lightened by itself or if you just wash it with lemon juice.

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  8 років тому

      +melibear0807 I would use a gel or cream Demi permanent. Maybe try Ion Color Brilliance Demi Permanent in something such as 9NG (neutral gold). This range of Ion Demi permanent dyes also carry a "clear", which is amazing for diluting the 9NG (or whatever shade you chose in that range) for your porous ends :) .. Just make sure you don't put this on your dark roots, only the previously lightened blonde. And of course if your hair isn't a level 9 blonde, you could choose the level 8 or whatever :) good luck xo

    PLEASE advice! My hair is patchy, basically the color I need to tone (pale yellow).
    PROBLEM the patches on my scalp are SO badly damaged in 2 places....I actually cut a small portion from the top! I saw irreversible damage.
    I used peroxide & then peroxide & baking soda & wasn't aware my hair could be stripped of all color & turned to mush.
    It is in only 2 pretty small places, but too much to cut at the roots!!!!
    Then I have to even it somehow! The ends are healthy & darker going up pale blonde to white on the scalp.
    I have been deep conditioning...but it isn't affecting the white patches.
    My hair is now dry from washing....but very wet in the white roots area.
    Only good news is I can go with any color. (Natural). Naturally white blond got darker in my teens, but I can go warm or cool. That doesn't seem helpful right now :(
    I'm not lightening the hair anymore right now. Trying to preserve the health at the cost of color.

    Hi, I have a question if anyone gets a chance xxx I have dark brown hair, I've bleached it twice and done one bleach wash in 3 days. I initially bleached twice in a day (30 vol) and toned with wella t18 (20 vol). The t18 did nothing to my hair so I thought, although it looked yellow more than orange, I should try a different toner. I combined t10 w t18 expecting to get a more platinum color. This for some reason turned my hair more orange!! I then bleach washed to minimize damage and just toned with t14. It's a little better but still quite brassy! I've toned 3 times and at this point I think my hair just needs a break? Before this I've never ever dyed my hair before. It's like you said, it doesn't seem to be taking anything really. Also I've left purple shampoo on for 45 mins to an hour twice and didn't notice a difference w that either. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance💌

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  5 років тому +1

      lil munda i don’t know the answer for sure but my guess is that your hair isn’t light enough for those wella toners. It can’t just be yellow - your hair has to be like pale pastel yellow in order for t10 or t18 to work. I would recommend using a demi permanent colour with 10 volume developer in a level 8 or 9 beige blonde shade. It will have minimal damage and will cover the brass better

    what color of light blonde would be best for skin with pink undertones and green eyes and also I'm super white like maybe two shades darker than you but still really white

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  8 років тому +1

      I really like pale pearly shades (somewhere between natural and silvery) on fair, cool-toned skin. I feel like the brand Ion from Sally's has a good one...demi permanent...I feel like it's 9NV or something. That line also carries a clear demi permanent that you can use to dilute the 9NV if you want to make it less intense. But if you want something like my colour, I'd try something like 9NG (neutral gold). I use Wella T10 to tone my hair, but it always fades to this neutral/golden shade :)

    • @tararanae2041
      @tararanae2041 8 років тому

      +somegirljess what does demi permanent mean? I'll have to look for that one and give it a go. I've never used any NV colors I always just got for a plain N. the V is for violet right?

    Do you know whst could be going on with my hair. I bleached it, I've bleached it for almost 20 yrs now lol, I just recently noticed that when I go to use toners, that have always worked well btw) I cannot get rid of the yellow, stubborn yellow I guess. I've used t18 first, few days later used t14 with a bit of 050 added, they both toned it but there's still a bit of yellow and I DO NOT understand bc I've never had this issue before. I even used the purple shampoo on it dry and left it for over a hr, took it off and looked like I hadn't done anything to it 😣😣😣😣 I'm at a loss, I don't know why it's not responding. I've never had this issue

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  5 років тому

      Lacey Heisler it could be a bunch of different reasons...my best guesses would be 1) it’s not light enough. Yellow is more stubborn when it’s a brighter or darker yellow, vs. Pale pastel yellow. Or 2) your hair is so damaged that can’t “take” colour anymore - that has happened to me. Even when my hair didn’t look awfully damaged, it still wouldn’t absorb anything because it was so weak it couldn’t hold anything.

      @KatherineJ1346 3 роки тому

      If it’s a patchy brassy/brown try doing a bleach bath to get it a bit more even before dying it dark. 20Vol should be perfect for that, I recommend that you add in a bond builder when you mix up the color

    • @somegirljesskent

      Steven it will fade in a couple weeks if you wash your hair often. But I would recommend toning hair every 4-6 weeks just to minimize the damage :)

    I have medium brown hair right now, it's porous not badly but its defiently porous. I want to put red over the brown, anything special I should do?

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  7 років тому +1

      Lexi Calli I would suggest a semi permanent red, they tend not to affect porous hair as much. Manic panic would be an example. You could get orange, yellow and red bottle s and mix the perfect red colour to apply on top. Of course this won't get rid of you brown underneath, so the outcome will be a red/brown mix. If you don't want brown hair anymore, then I would use a red hair dye that is meant to be used on dark hair (L'Oréal has some I think). Those dyes are high lift so they would lift some brown out. I think in either case, the red wouldn't affect the porous hair much since. Always try a test strand to make sure you like it first :)

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  7 років тому +1

      Lexi Calli just wanted to add: if you use the semi permanent option, you could add a little conditioner to your mixture just for the ends or the porous parts

      I have very porus hair from previous bleaching. I used manic panic and joico titanium a week apart each to tone down reddish orange hair. It did work.
      However I would like to color it a bit more golden ashy blonde. My question to you is can I color it after toning or should I wait for toner to wash out first before coloring.
      What do you suggest??

    I love your tips, although I'm not trying to lighten my hair yet.. I wanted your opinion : I'm trying to go darker for almost a year now, but my hair is SO porous that won't hold any, and i mean ANY dark hair dye, not box dye, nor professional dyes at hair saloons! My hair is not that damaged, but it won't hold the damn color, ever after 3-4 brown dyes i've tried! I also forgot to mention that my natural hair color is some kind of dirty blonde. Pleeease give me a tip, I really want the dye to stay for more than 3 weeks(that's the maximum it has stayed on my hair). Fun fact, I've never had visible roots 😂 Although I'm really interested in trying that porosity equalizer you mentioned!
    Thanks in advance!

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  6 років тому

      Έλλη Πόλιου it's interesting that your hair is porous without the damage! My experiences with porosity have always been because of over-bleaching. But I wonder if something like henna dye would hold? Or just Something that is more like a stain, instead of something that has to penetrate the hair shaft (permanent dyes). Semi permanent hair colours can last depending on brand - manic panic and punky colour for example are semi permanents that stain the outside of the hair and last pretty long. Although I'm not sure they have any natural or brown shades. I wonder if the brand Ion from Sally's has any more natural shades that are semi permanent. So yeah, I'd look into henna, semi permanents, and also just demi permanents - demi permanents use 10 volume or less developer (I think you can even buy 5 vol from the brand blond brilliance) - with 10 volume developer or lower, the dye doesn't have to penetrate the hair shaft as much so it might hold better as its more of a stain. I'd also recommend making sure hair is super clean and dry when you colour your hair - like wash it that day and don't use conditioner. Hope this helps!!

      @elliep1289 6 років тому

      somegirljess Thank you so much for your answer! Maybe that staining thing will work, i don't know, but I'm sure i will try it out since nothing else stays put... As about henna, i've heard that once you go with it, you can't go back to usual hair dyes because it can cause serious damage.. Although I'm not so sure i actually believe it...

    Always keep fanciful toners on hand. When i bleach hard sometimes my hair wont accept a toner. I’ve even used chocolate kiss & got a good ash color. Never panic, there’s always an answer. Baby powder also helps when your hair won’t tone. Be calm, put on a good conditioner & a wide headband, wait a day or two & your hair will calm down & take the toner.

    Maybe use conditioner on the ends if you're using a non peroxide based colour like Manic Panic but never do this if you're actually colouring your hair, the conditioner creates a barrier so the colour will not take to the ends at all.. So if you're bleaching or going darker you'll end up with ends that haven't taken enough colour in. Just don't leave the colour on the ends as long because being porus it'll suck it up much quicker (put a toner on roots and mid lengths for 25 minutes and ends for 5)
    Make sense?

    • @dasanvalentine4923
      @dasanvalentine4923 5 років тому

      I believe she is talking about when the hair is so porous that it soaks up even purple shampoo in literally a second, giving the appearance of hair being dip-dyed a fantasy shade because of how strongly it held on to the color. In this case conditioner is absolutely acceptable to be used as a buffing agent. If the hair is as porous as in this example Riah it will still take sufficiently.

    The actual definition of the porosity of hair is how well moisture (water, oils, and natural oils) flow in and out of the outer layer of your hair. Porous hair has open cuticles which release the natural healthy oils out soon after they are produced. ***Not trying to say your description was wrong, just giving a more clear definition for less educated hair gurus.😁

    Thin hair= normal? Lol ok

    • @somegirljesskent
      @somegirljesskent  4 роки тому

      frenchryah Oh, that’s not what I meant at all. I meant that there is no other reason for hair holding water - so when hair is very thick, hair tends to hold a lot of water and take a long time to dry. But when hair is thin, there’s no reason for it to take forever to dry unless it’s porous. So when I said “and I don’t mean if you have thick hair - I mean if you have thin or normal hair” - I meant hair types that have no reason to hold water/moisture. I should have said “medium thickness or thin” - not thin/normal!
