I've never thought of painting them as Raven Guard because I always think "it's just black, that's boring!" but this ultra matte black with the blue hue and brown-red shading looks fantastic and is really making me want to paint mine up the same. End result is superb.
I've often felt the same about them.
Makes me want to completely repaint mine honestly, haha
@@cultofpaint One of the best black paint jobs, most turn out too grey or blue like you said.
This is a video i’ve been looking out for, my favorite loyalists!
I wish I had more time to paint. Thank you for reminding me what it's like
Thank you so much for this! Exactly what I’ve been looking for!
Amazing!!! Been waiting for this one.
Yay! Super pumped. Lovely result. Thought about the colours you'll use and was quite close. Already got a Marine for testing build and primed. Cheers!
Would love to see a candy style black armor! Maybe a black legion marine in honor of their new codex?
Looks really good! I did a test model for Raven Guard using your Black Templar tutorial and I was really happy with how that turned out.
Love the look. I know for my own force's I'd covus black, a dry brush of longbeard grey, a nightshade wash and corax white for trim and other stuff.
The best legion! At long last.
Outstanding
The fact you guys only have 40k subs is just criminal....another great quality tutorial!
Yoink!!! Consider that black recipe nicked ;) I don't know when I'll use it but I'm definitely going to find an excuse to do a black with those sort of oil washes. Another lovely scheme!
Brilliant work as always Henry ⚡⚡⚡
Thanks Adam
That looks sweet, great job
Thanks!
Amazing tutorial as usual! In order to finish my backlog I'll need you guys to do a tutorial on pretty much every Citadel model and some battletech stuff so keep at it!
On it!
totally stealing a lot of this for my justaerin terminators! tysm
Someone's been watching alot of Richard grey videos lately 😉 great video doing something similar with my iron hands definetly gonna have to try the brown wash
If I wanted to watch hobby painting videos then Richard's would certainly be on the list.
Been looking forward to this for a while! I've been pondering a shadowy black scheme for some Shadowkeeper Custodes...
ooo nice!
Heresy Raven Guard.....
_Beak helmets are heresy_
I have to admit that my Raven Guard aren't coming out *quite* as nicely as yours, but I still like them. This recipe for black is amazing and I want to try it with other colors in the black as well. (Like a black/green for the first highlight instead of turquoise)
lovely base color, going to use this for some ebon keshig :)
Nice!
I know you already have a Dark Angels guide (which I used on some 40K Consecrators) but I think I'll be using this for my First Legion - it's pretty much exactly the look I was wanting to do (I'll just need to add in some red bits!)
More dark angels is always better.
Have you considered doing a Horus Heresy level up series. Like some considerations on upgrades and conversions for you characters and how to push the character models to the next level? Sounds like it would be a good sequel to the current series
Fun idea, I’ll scribble some things down.
@@cultofpaintplease do this!
I’m loving the Horus heresy series, really tempted to try a one off raven guard. Cheeky question - do you have any plans to paint any more chaos marines with the codex coming soon?
Oh yes indeed!
Hi Henry! (From Everyone)
Must be awesome on “regular” raven guard, can you apply the ultra matte varnish with a brush?
I wonder if the addition of a green filter in selected places on the model would add to the subdued oil-slick-on-water effect seen when strong light is reflected off black feathers? Really interesting approach, an inspiring must-try formula.
Go for it!
Great tutorial Henry, good to see how using shades of black can still create interest without needing to go mad on the edge highlights.
Small question, what is the ratio of your gloss varnish to thinner/flow improver. Struggling to get it right with the windsor and newton gloss i have.
With that poly gloss it’s thick, like golden syrup. So I thin that around 3-4 drops thinner to one drop varnish. Then give the mini at least 3 coats.
@@cultofpaint Thanks :)
Henry. My love. Did you say that the REST of the legions would be out in the next week or so? I’ve been WAITING for your Word Bearers and Ultramarines. I’ve got a Calth campaign coming up and I need my demonic boys.
Thanks so much for these, can’t wait!
I did indeed! I think its sallies ultras and WB left right? 3 of my absolute faves.
@@cultofpaint AH SO COOL! Can't wait to get going on them! And yessir, those three, plus the SoH. I know Andy did his Contemptor tutorial, and it's easy to translate to army painting. But dude, I'd love to see your take on the Salamanders!
I was wondering if you could do one on Night Lords in the Heresy era. I know you already did a video on them, but I'm curious to see how you'd approach them now and if you could make it a bit more grimdark?
The nightlords video is how I’d do them for heresy era.
Great inspiration for the leftover beakies form the boxset ;). Thanks
for the video. A small question. When i look at the Playlist for the
Horus Heresy there is no video for army painting of thre Sons of Horus
but a far more advanced video for a SoH contemptor. Does this mean that
there will be no Army painting SoH tutorial ot will there be one ?
Thanks for the answer
There will be more for the SoH.
@@cultofpaint Great ! Cant wait for it :)
Any plans to do the 40K chaos legions? Would love to see your take on the pink emperors children
Yep!
Impressive, I was definitely skeptical at first but the black really came together nicely.
My question, though...you've almost done every legion now. How much longer must the Word Bearers wait? There's so many tutorials out there that are very bright or otherwise don't feel stylistically appropriate for the Heresy era, so I'd really love to see your take on them.
I've got something tasty planned for the WB, they are one of my faves.
@@cultofpaint excellent, I look forward to it!
@@cultofpaint Oh boy, can't wait for that!
Hi! I really want to do this scheme but I don’t have access to spray cans or airbrushes. Do you have any tips as to how I can get the same matte finish? Liked and subscribed your channel!
Mix some matte varninsh into your paints
Great tutorial, just have a few questions, did you use Vallejo model colour black air or just the model colour with thinner? Same with the corvus black was it the air or normal layer paint thinned down? . Also do you think tamiya xf black would also work?? Many thanks 😁😁
Model air would be fine. I used model colour thinned. I used normal Corvus black but again air would be fine. I think those work better than flat black.
Love the look of these, i only have some burnt sienna oil color on hand. Do you think that would be too bright for the pin wash ?
Yes. Check out the Ulthwe video i did, that will give you a good idea how that will look.
How would you go about applying this scheme to vehicles?
Marvellous, was intending to do rave guard when my box arrived, where did you get that left shoulder pad? Is It aftermarket?
It’s off the forgeworld Ravenguard special unit.
How did you do the brassy/gold colored bit of the back pack?
It’s just s75 decayed metal.
Where did that raven guard dimpled shoulder pad come from? Same as the mor deythan
yeah its off MOr Dethyn
Hearing you say that the series will be done soon made me kind of... Sad really. Guess you guys need to start doing alternative schemes/subchapters/obscure lore gems for all 18 next!
Well there’s only one scheme each so far. And we know there’s variations. And then there’s Badab….
@@cultofpaint bring it on!
I can't stand the "Beaky" marine helmets, the design keeps reminding me of the characters of Spy vs. Spy from Mad Magazine...
