    Important note on any strenuous physical activity, in this case the brush flicks
    Discomfort is okay, because that means you’re working muscles that aren’t used to being used in that way, and are conditioning them
    Pain is bad. Pain means you’ve gone too far. Stop & care for the injury properly, be it as simple as just relaxing it for a while, or ice, or whatever is best needed

      This, so much!! I don’t play brushes or any spam weapons, but I do a lot of strenuous physical activity. I’ve permanently janked up my back, knees, and hips from not knowing when to stop. I even got carpal tunnel from drawing for 8-16 hours a day. I was always told that pain means you’re growing, and that’s fully untrue. Like OP said, discomfort is fine and it’s usually what you’re going for. You are NOT going for any kind of pain!!! Your body will thank you!!

    One thing to note about Inkbrush vs. Octo is that the former is immune to enemy ink while rolling, even when doing a tight turn that would have your character walk on enemy ink. The Octobrush, for whatever reason, lacks this ability and CAN be slowed/damaged if you happen to step on enemy ink while rolling. So take advantage of this with the Inkbrush and don't be afraid to take hard turns to keep your movements unpredictable, and be cautious when moving with the Octobrush that you don't slow yourself down.

    • @SquidSchool
      @SquidSchool  Рік тому +87

    Great vid, Gem!
    Here are some tips not mentioned about rolling in the video:
    1. Run speed does not affect roll speed, so dont bother trying to stack to become the speediest cephalopod
    2. Inkbrush has an ink resistance effect while rolling, while Octobrush does not
    3. If you're walking on an uninkable/grate, roll on it to move faster

    • @slashley6106
      @slashley6106 Рік тому +14

      This! #3 NEEDED to be said, since on some maps grates(/uninkable) are important, and brushes are the only weapons that can breeze over them. At least this was shown in the video at least once 40:20
      But it's so short that any aspiring brushers probably won't even notice.

    We really could use a new Brush.
    I'm thinking something like the Fineliner- you have the thinnest ink trail when rolling with minimal drain on ink, but you have a longer range swing that can hit like a truck in melee. It's based on a fine, thin brush.
    There could also be the Broadstroke- something close to the Carbon in size but chugs ink as you roll. You do not want to be slammed with it, but it doesn't have amazing coverage from swings. It's supposed to be a very large brush, where you can leave a trail but you have to play with the drain. Beat the devil out of em.

    As an octobrush main, i feel like the buff they gave the zipcaster in the last update (ink consumption decreased to 67% of previous) really quickly turns into a nerf when you try it, cause you're in the special for longer, and the longer you are the more you're in danger, the more you risk to die. You can just flick wildly to empty the ink tank and go back faster if you're in danger, but since the update i've found myself dying even more often than before just because the thing is so long now.
    Also, can confirm, at high level you just don't survive, X 2500 is as far as i've been able to take the octobrush before i get my butt kicked by more conventional picks, i believe they need to make both the weapon and the special slightly better for it to be viable, but i still do believe in it (sort of)

    I definitely play it more aggressively than you did, which shows in the stats as I often get double digits in kills and sometimes in the amount of times I was splatted as well.
    One other thing I've noticed is that Inkbrush Nouveau is actually _really_ good for Clam Blitz. You set up your ink mines in spots the enemy will need to go to to be able to throw a clam in, and since everyone will be crowded around the basket you can just pop your Ultra Stamp and get 3 kills in 2 seconds.

    I'm an inkbrush main because I have terrible aim and because, gameplay-wise, it feels startlingly similar to playing as Scout from TF2. Let me explain:
    You are very fast, so you can reach and push objectives quicker than anyone else. You can be absurdly mobile in enemy territory and do your best work striking from unexpected angles up close, so maps with only a few obvious access points to enemy territory make life suck for you. Juking and being as annoying as possible can tie up one or more enemies for long enough that the time they're spending not shooting at your allies becomes meaningful. You will die a lot and feel like you are made of paper. The more of you there are on a team, the less effective your team will be.

    My best friend has been playing Splatoon for the first time and she loves the ink brush. But unfortunately she’s physically unable to mash because of her hand pain that stems from a really nasty car accident that messed up her back.
    I recently got her a new controller, one that has a turbo and gyro, so she can have fun in turf war using her favorite weapon.
    While not exactly something that’s legal, and some may see it as cheating, she would physically be unable to play her favorite weapon otherwise. It’s a failing on Nintendo for not caring about accessibility more than anything.
    Nintendo in general needs to improve their accessibility features across all their games, Splatoon especially.

    Generally the key thing that separates the Ink/Octo brushes from the Nouveau is that the Nouveau CAN NOT make front line aggressive plays.
    All brushes can play in 3 ways: defensive, sharking and flanking BUT only the regular Ink and Octo variants can do front line aggression with their sub and main combos.
    The Nouveau acts more like a defensive troop for teams but can also take a wide back route to snipe a flank on most comps, though it can also be strong in the distraction department of things which I think a lot of players sleep on with all the brushes, it's a strong ability when a weapon can play aggressive, defensive, stealthy and distraction all in the one class.

    this has little to do with the actual video but its always a fun little thing when everyone on a team has the same species/style combo and something like 40:15 happens where the same voice clip comes from like 3 people at once.
    getting more on topic, im glad you brought up the physical strain aspect of brush usage. back in 1, i could be an absolute inkbrush Fiend thanks to being able to mash with two fingers instead of just one (thank you, tiny hands), but it took me years and being just out of commission for months on end after doing a bunch of tight wrist movements from games and art to take stretching and hand care seriously. if i didnt become more interested in splatlings and stuck with brushes back when i didnt even Think about my hands, i think i could have done some serious damage to myself. all this to say, caring for your hands is really important and the more people talk about it, the more common it'll be to know and act on it. thank you for mentioning it!

    As an inkbrush main and watching this video I could tell that you can survive longer than most of the deaths you had. My playstyle is quite different than yours but a good way to use the killer wail 5.1 is to launch a bomb, use wail and then use another bomb, this makes your opponents much harder to survive since they have to dodge the bombs and the killer wail at the same time and you can have a better chance of splatting multiple players who are in range or leave them very weak. I also think twice on going for the flanks on Hagglefish because players at higher level will do a map check and stop the flank but in the very end, great video! I have a different playstyle and I can get an idea of what can the other kits can do.

    26:21 As a Nouveau main, blocking shots is not what I use the hammer for unless there are no Splatlings and/or Chargers (especially E-liters) on the enemy team, and the jump swing is really only useful if you're on the tower in Tower Control. The way I use the stamper is to either create a wide line to get behind enemy lines, use it as a range throw the same way a regular Inkbrush player uses Splat Bombs (a perfect hit does 220 damage or 60 damage if it's not perfect but close), or use it to reclaim a Splat Zone if I'm playing that. 28:47 Yep, like tri-color, a defensive brush player with Ink Mines is great for protecting the signal (depending on the map, you can put 3 or 4 on top of the signal if you line them up).

    Brush down, moves about as fast as max run speed up, still notably slower than octobrush. The trail's width is only somewhat smaller than carbon roller. However, it gains a brella-like shield slightly after you start trailing. Contact damage 3-shots.
    Swings are large and very wide, paints very well but about 3 swings a second. Swings come in a combo, always starting from 1st. 1st one about octobrush range and 2nd somewhat longer while the 3rd is narrow but reaches pretty far. Swings deal the same damage each and can 3-shot, although drop-off can make it a 4-shot

    Yessss the video I've been waiting for! I've been maining inkbrush mayhem since Splatoon 1. One of the things I really miss is having the big giant ZR trigger on the Wii U gamepad that you could use your pointer and middle finger on easily to keep the hand fatigue at bay.
    I find all of your points to be very cognizant, and I can definitely tell that this is *not* your playstyle, Gem 😂
    I tend to play way more aggressive, and actually don't end up sharking all that much. If you can shark, great, but if you can roll up into someone's back/face and hit them before they can hit you, it's perfect. The analogy someone said of being the Scout from TF2 is perfect. Your job is to go in, cause chaos, and get out.

I have an officially licensed Power A controller with programable buttons on the back. The programable ones are tactile instead of the trigger type of buttons that have a bit of travel distance to them on the trigger. So do to this I can mash that little bit fast and splat someone that little bit faster.

    For playing ink/octo, here's some tips as an octubrush main (dunno if these are said in the video):
    •If you want to go a bit longer range, jump. You have a bit more distance and it also paint a bit more ink.
    •Don't bother going directly to the enemy, because you don't even NEED aim with brushes. It's outrageous how you can get 2+ people at once by just spamming ZR confront of them carelessly.
    •When you just pick it up, don't go forward to enemies quickly, as you'll need to get up fairly close. Going on a higher platform can splat enemies from a longer range when boosted with jumping.
    •Snipers may seem deadly as ink/octo is short range, but we can kill them faster as they have to charge. This may not apply for some people, but for me that's how it works.
    •Use bombs (preferably) for inking small corners and gaps. Suction bomb, which is on octo, helps a lot with this.
    •For zipcaster, start in small corners so people don't camp your return point. And for killer wail 5.1, don't use it in sticky situations. Use it when there is a lack of enemies, so you know their locations. Ultra stamp is hard to use for brush mains (well for me, mostly) because we need a decent aim.

    I was lookin' forward to Gem finally talking about my favorite weapon.
    I do agree that Noveau is just not as good as the classic kit, but I have fallen in love with how chaotic Noveau can be. I used Noveau to climb to B, but I was caught up in the idea that Classic wss more meta and was stuck in B+ for the longest time. But I decided to swap back to Noveau and I'm finally in A halfway to S. I know its not as optimal as classic, but I just feel so at home with this weapon.
    I use a sort of...aggressive sharking method? Its hard to get into position to do this, but basically what I do is use ink mines to lock down an enemy's portion of the map or paths. I stop enemies from making it to objective and guard an area sort of playing a semi support/sharking role? Inkmines make the kill time slightly faster so I don't have to mash as much. Another way I use it is to delibrately lure enemies by pretending to retreat and they follow me into mines so i can turn around and jump them instead.
    Stamper is a bit weird with Inkmines but I actually just use it as a stamper without jumping or throwing (usually at the end). Its an excellent way to pave the way to the Rainmaker and from what I've seen, its also good at messing up enemy positions if you use it from behind them to surprise them. It may cause them to scatter, retreat, or turn around, making it easier for teammates pick off.
    Sadly though, Noveau gets shut down hard if your team doesn't have the advantage or if you can't find an opening. And with maps having limited flank routes, it becomes harder to play this. Also like, this might not work agaisnt smarter players xD

      Yooooo I super agree with you on Noveau being a fun chaos causing weapon, as people really do pass over how good ink mine can be, especially on a weapon that can move as quickly as the inkbrush can. I like to charge/sneak into enemy bases all time, and with the Noveau I can leave fun surprises for them on pathways out of their spawn, or in likely sniper perches.

I just have so much fun running around like a 6 year old on a sugar rush, being annoying and getting all up in people's faces and splatting them. And killer wail synergizes so well with brush, sack killer wail on someone, swim/run back around their back, they're backing off to escape the wail, get a face full of bristles 🖌️🖌️
    The octobrush is also cool, I literally play it sometimes if I wanna give my trigger finger a break (all the non brush mains are horrified at me considering octobrush easy on the button mashing) but it just feels like slow inkbrush to me.

    Im an inkbrush user and i enjoy the vid about this weapon. I love inkbrush. Personally i play more agressive style, spaming splat bombs and, with a constant practice, i can say i get a lot more kills with the bombs itself compared to just mashing. The inkbrush is really a versatil weapon, depending on your style or the situation, you can be defensive, agressive, camp, stealth, distract, etc... Using more bombs reduce the time you are mashing and the pain or stress derived of that repetitive action. Great vid and cheers to my inkbrush pals.

      With Inkbrush, it's more about flanking and running because you won't have many times to initiate a trade due to short range, so don't worry. With Squeezer, accurate shots are better than fast ones because single-fire shots don't paint as well. Just practice and you'll get them down easy 👍

    I wonder how much Run Speed affects Brushes... usually the worse a weapon is at any given skill, the better a skill is. Ink Saver (Main) benefits weapons with few actions per tank (like Explosher and Dynamo), Swim Speed has a way better curve on heavyweight weapons...
    Of course, I ultimately wouldn't use it, I just don't think Brushes have need for their strafe speed and walking and flicking is such an awful way to approach (and in fact, despite playing Brush for YEARS, this video is the first time I've ever noticed how awful the strafe speed is! It's just not something you really use), but I do still wonder!
    though maybe it's like splatana and just completely unaffected

    • @TaxeAndStuff
      @TaxeAndStuff Рік тому

      run speed pretty much does nothing, especially since it doesnt affect rolls. the strafe speed is fine if you know how to swim up to people effectively, since you will mostly swim or roll.

    Brushes utilize their mobility to even get something worth. Their range is abysmally short, but they have some of the fastest mobility in the game because of their attacking dash.
    Brushes have the role of Slayer/Skirmisher. They skirmish the enemy by moving fast around he map to get the enemy's attention, and slay if the enemy is too close to the Brush where the Brush is in range.
    The only thing that makes this weapon hard, other than its short range, is the mashing on fire to strike multiple times. Just to note, the mashing capability is needed for this weapon class.

    • @babywizard9027
      @babywizard9027 Рік тому +2

      I think the duration buff was good, but they should add the option to recall early to the user.
      Maybe if you press the R button while the special is already active, you will instantly go back to the starting point and end the special early.
      That way you can use the extra duration when it benefits you, but it you are in danger and need to escape quickly, you can do it at any time, it would also help make camping your landing harder because you can mix up the timing and land earlier than expected.

    • @babywizard9027
      @babywizard9027 Рік тому +2

      When I say the R button, I mean the button you press to activate your special, just to be clear.

      its both a win and a loss, really. Wish theyd have buffed smthn else, like length you could jump to, or the splash it makes when you zip somewhere. Duration was never so much to problem, range was a bigger issue for me. I'll be just a step out of range of zipping somewhere, and then die because of it cause im jsut standing there smashing the button lol.

    • @lucanimations_
      @lucanimations_ Рік тому

      @@babywizard9027 I agree with the recall thing, as well as a better landing explosion, another thing could be to give it a more reliable armor while you're in the middle of a zip going from point A to point B more safely, but mostly i wish the maps gave brushes and other short ranges more options, that's the biggest part why it's a pain to play them right now
