Brake Assembly & Engine Tests | Franna Crane Project | Part 6
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2023
- We’re continuing on with stage 2 of our Franna crane project! This video is Part 6 in our crane project and we’re progressing on the repairs to underneath the crane. We’ve got pricing to replace the damaged brake assembly but now we need to remove all of the wheels and check what condition the other 3 brake assemblies are in to see what other parts we need. We are also still having issues with the crane intermittently starting and stopping so we do some troubleshooting by compression testing the engine and checking the fuel system! Stay tuned for the next part of our project!

Is this turning into a DIY crane build based on a Frana frame? 😂
I’d love a segment where Karen explains the mechanical things in her own words 😂
@@invoidker1049 That would be awesome.
yes.

“Because I don’t have a drift car I’m going to bling out the crane” music to the nation, full wrap maybe, this is an awesome series, absolutely loving it. Huge shout out to Karen, I watched another overseas video today and they mentioned Kurtis, CEE and the fantastic job Karen does of filming and editing and I couldn’t agree more, without you Karen and the work you put in in the background, CEE would not be receiving the worldwide popularity it is, so bloody good job both of you
That would probably be Baz over @ WelderFabber who is a fan of this channel.
@@lemmy9996nah, I think it was allistairC something
Adam savage of myth busters fame mentioned this channel a little while ago
I'd really like Karen to do a video about her process and tooling for the videos...
@@jonomoffat3536 there's a lot of tubers that love this channel. Phil Morrison from driftworks has mentioned it previously
Hung over, fried egg sandwich, hot cup of tea, fist full of aspirin, feet up and a CCE video...its going to be a good one.
LOL...remember those days unfortunately can't drink alcohol anymore so I don't have them any more, the older you get the worse and longer it takes the hangover to go away! 🥲🥲🥲
Same here!😂
Sounds like a perfect date night....Good on ya!🤔
That's why I feel sorry for people that don't drink, that's the best they're gunna feel all day!
I'm also lying in bed at 6:30 pm on a friday night but the pain was infliced by weeks of non stop physical work, 3 hours of endurance or weight training every night. 20 + km runs for example (speed work for part of it) after working out in the hot sun. Saunas, brutal 5km swim sets with lots of 100s butterfly then leg sessions after at the gym. Eating like 5000 to 10000 calories a day I guess. I just COULD NOT train again tonight. Couldn't even bring myself to go sit in the sauna. I even do it on Saturdays and Sundays. Anyone wants my advice, train and train and train plus work and work and work🥇 Forget women, family, friends and of course alcohol🫡🤘
Dear god this has turned into a full blown rebuild fast. Can't wait to see it all done.
Man I don't know how you remain so patient and calm! A litany of faults and you just keep on going, well done and you're an inspiration to us all.
no point getting upset about it cause the issues are still gonna be there 😂 Kurtis likes to just move ahead with solutions
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering yeah I've been there before on vehicles. You just end up focusing on solving each problem one at a time to get to the end. Anger is not productive and will only impede the process. Sometimes I'd have to take a break because I uncovered something the moron before me had butchered. Not long mind you because the job aint getting done on it's own.
Before I read this comment I had a quick thought of "at least when he's done he'll have a nice crane he knows is mostly done right (cause he didn't do all of it). You could also look at the crane as a source of future content that diverges some from the traditional offerings of this channel.
EDIT : What I've found funny is that the amount of rust/corrosion is reminding me of some of my old cars back in the day. Once I went to do a brake job on a cheap dodge omni I was driving in highschool only to discover that the car was basically rusting in half under the back seat area. Salt in the winter up north in the USA eats cars.
However bad you think this is, there has been worse in the past and there will be worse in the future
careful editing 🤣
@@CuttingEdgeEngineeringYeh. Swearing at it doesn't fix it any faster. I've tried. 🙃
The best bit about having a 6 part (that I reckon will probably end up being 10+ parts) for a rebuild - is that all the other interesting stuff that you are going to be doing in the meantime - will make for even more epic engineering content.
I see your 10 and raise it to 12.👍
Especially now we know that there's been some pretty heavy water ingress in the rear end..... I won't be at all surprised if the next episode is "remove engine" and then the following episode is "replace rear diff".....
@@lemmy9996 Part 14 is the drift kit.
So what if there are 20 parts, nothing to your account mate and he even has an apprentice to help him!
@@hot_wheelz my thoughts exactly. And I raise it to14 part series 😅
Yes, bling out your crane, brother. Here in the States, major crane companies take pride in their big mobile cranes and are always wiping down and shining their money makers every chance they get. I remember on one job we had a company called Hill Crane operating a Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 and every time we had some down time between picks the driver (not the operator) would be wiping down the crane, polishing the wheels, etc.
in australia they are the same person usually but yes some companies take real pride in their fleet.
Love hearing George chirping moral support in every video!
I have long argued that not everyone needs a college education, as many of us are not cut out for it. It is not an indication of intellect, rather how we learn. I've known many people who are brilliant at what they do, yet didn't do well in school. I don't know your background, Kurtis, but the fact that you can transition from metalworker to mechanic so smoothly while still bringing an enormous amount of knowledge to bear on the problem, is most impressive. My hat's off to you. Thank you, Karen, for making the content as entertaining as it is. Keep it coming.
YES, Karen must do a video where she does all the talking (you can coach what to say before each part), just for fun! I know at this point she must know more than most, having carefully watched so much of what you do.
Christmas special, Karen does the machining and Kurtis giggles behind the camera.
Christmas Special: Kurtis is mashining and giggeling, and Karen does all the talking. :-) Put on the santa hat! :-)
@@xkblxcripple 💯
A switch up would be so awesome!
Kurtis could write her a short script and Karen could do the voiceover!
I absolutely appreciate y'all leaving the clips of Kurtis being frustrated when the crane won't start, because every single one of us that has ever worked on a project like this knows _exactly_ how he feels.
The eye of Mordor . . you need Finnish swear words to unlock some puzzles
when kurtis is done with this thing it will be in better shape than when it left the factory. i just imagined curtis doing a fixup job with andrew camarata or Matt (Diesel Creek) on their used and banged up machines, he'd get multiple nervous breakdowns in the process
I and I'm sure many other guys watching this sequence have unwittingly ventured into a pit of problems like this. Kurtis, your patience and perseverance with your machinery is becoming legendary! I know how a frustrating job like this makes me less cooperative and friendly, less likely to want someone taking a video of me while I steam. Kudos to Karen for (lot of 'K's' in this post...) for persevering during the video work on these jobs to bring us this content.
this is like the project car videos. "Well, while i'm cleaning the interior, i might as well pull the transmission and rebuild it. while the tranny is out, i might as well repaint the engine bay. to do that i need to pull the engine. while that's out i might as well rebuild the engine... on and on and on until the thing is completely disassembled down to the frame.
Things could have gone so differently for that poor crane if it hadn't found a good home with the Staffie, Magpie, Franna sanctuary. Thanks for posting this heart warming tale.
They are actually Butcher Birds, not Magpies
I was wondering what those birds were! I mean, I can hear magpies and crows in the background, but you rarely see them in the videos.
Back in the bad ol days of fj's and fx's(yes I'm that old) the common saying was "Jack up the petrol cap and replace the car".I really hope the sun starts shining on the Franna project for both you guys.Great show as always. Thanks .
*Butcher birds.
@@ozwalkerzthe crows could be ravens.
32:18 Karen's laugh is the best part. She is very spontaneous and makes the video more relaxed.
She does have a nice joyful laugh!
Those are the best jack stands I’ve ever seen.
Being a diesel mechanic this has been really interesting to watch you take this apart. This thing is super weird and I don't think the last owners knew what they were doing when trying to repair it. But I do 100% agree with you it would be a lot safer to upgrade to the new 10-lug style hub and rims. Not only are parts a lot more readily available, but they're also safer to work on. the rims you took off are called widowmaker rims for a reason.
Mate, just a heads up. Be extra careful with the injection pump of this model. The input shaft has a key groove but no key to align it with the drive gear and the timing can easily go off when tightening the gear nut👍🏼
theres a locking stud on the side of the pump and yes the gear is held on a tapered shaft.
Can the gear be cut to fit a key?
The heavy corrosion on the brakes is par for the course here in Canada. It's from the road salt they put down in the winter to melt ice. My dad had a trucking company and all the tractors and trailers had the spoke and wedge type hubs. Our wheels never came off as easily as yours did. Much swinging of sledge hammers was needed to get them off. The spacers were a particular nightmare and much time was spent wire brushing the spokes so they would slide off. Out on the road our drivers would loosen the nuts and then drive slowly down the highway for a mile or so to break everything loose. When you have both rust and ice in the hub assembly it gets very difficult to get them apart. Ken
What a nightmare Ken! 😢
Whoa! that is a LOT of work to rebuild this crane. Kudos to you, Kurtis, for doing it!!
" And because i don't have a drift car, i'm going to bling out my crane" 😂😂😂
Great video. Before disturbing the pump I'd definitely confirm that the power and ground to the stop solenoid are spot on. I.e that neither are intermittent due to bad wiring, there are no voltage drops in the circuit and they can continuously supply enough current etc. I'd then suspect the solenoid sticking. They're relatively cheap, so might just be worth trying a new one. Or on a lot of pumps you can remove the solenoid, take out the plunger, then thread the now plunger-less solenoid back into the pump body. This then obviously robs you of having a working stop solenoid, so you have to stop the engine by other means (stop lever if it has one, stall it, block the air intake or disable fuel supply). It does however allow you to rule out a shit stop solenoid (itself or the electric control of it) as a cause. Looking forward to the next video. Cheers
I also had a shudder when Curtis said he wanted to take out engine and pump. I also mailed him to prevent him from taking out engine and pump if he do not read through our comments.
I found that the voltage drop when you crank. that closes the solenoid.
That is the reason that he can start it with starting fluid.
It was like watching Gold Rush and you know the problem and you can not help the guys.
@@jacquesvanniekerk2896 I agree, that wiring is suspect. I would even consider testing with another 12v source to the stop solenoid, because it sounded like it was cranking slowly.
This guy is incredible. He always takes something that was in a horrible state and when he is done it is completed to perfection.
I want to see a partial episode of you two switching it up 😂. "I don't know words" "I don't know the mechanical stuff" it would be great! Cheers y'all. Have a wonderful week/weekend
"bling out my crane" - caused an involuntary chuckle and almost spat my coffee out! Can't wait to see
I admire your analytical evaluation and problem determination. The cost issues are troubling but I can see why this is more cost effective for you. It is a sad commentary that you are told the engine is relatively new when you purchased the crane and your trouble shooting tells a different story. I respect your tenacity in going forward to solve all the issues you are aware of at this date. The water in the axles is perplexing. I also respect the hands on assistance Karen provides as you trouble shoot the issues. Her videography continues to be outstanding as well. I can only provide moral support, but know that I will be watching ALL of your videos and wishing you well as you both go on with the restoration. Best of luck in all your work. You both are a cut above the rest.
My guess for its poor state and all that water is that it has been for a swim at some stage. That would explain a lot of the problems, including the ratshit electricals.
Hey mate thanks so much for the words of support we both appreciate it!
@@kenoliver8913 I mean that's pretty close to being in a wash station. High pressure chemically treated water everywhere while it's running. Key to electronics is most corrosion and damage happens when power is applied. Since this thing was running while the water was going it's worse than if it was just dunked!!!
You both are quite welcome. sincerely feel that both deserve those thoughts. All I can do is provide moral support at this time in my life.@@CuttingEdgeEngineering
@30:50- 31:45 had me in tears, basically sums up most conversations I have with my wife, and yes we also blame other things for our issues, dog, kids, neighbours.... who or whatever is in line of sight. Great to see some natural conversations from you both, one of the many reasons I love this channel 👍
Keep it home; not on Y T
The whole video is awesome, but the 'domestic conversation' bits are the funniest. What a lovely, normal, well adjusted couple.
Kurtis is a Zen Master mechanic! He can fix anything!
No such thing as a free puppy. Like the idea of blinging the crane.
Really appreciate the commentary and explanations. Never would have realized the energy in the wedges. Assumed it was to move / dislodge as they were stuck. Makes such a difference to have well explained actions, and rational!
They are really really dangerous can break your leg or arm or kill you ! I saw one going through a 3/4 plywood at 25 feet
They do get stuck, but with the force they can contain is so high that when they break loose they can cause great harm. Leaving the nuts on the studs keeps the wedges from flying, striking the wedges/studs with the hammer breaks them loose, but in this way they are retained so they do not cause harm.
the split rim wheels are even more deadly, and can cause serious injuries or death if they break
You will get there I am sure. Don't throw anything away too soon, you are getting a small spare part collection for the crane. Must be frustrating though.
i rebuilt 4 cars which were probably as declaired dead as your crain project, and i instantly caught your look at 2:09 which, if i interpret it correctly is a mixture of "oh god what have i gotten myself into, dont have the time for this" and pure willpower " i will get it perfect and it will be awesome". cudos to your spirit and as always, awesome video, never stop what you are doing :)
and please add chrome rims, which would go awesome with the black cylinders. many contrast, much blings!
The editing is spot on, Karen is really great at what she does 🙂 Great upload as always.

Loving the Franna crane project just as much as the birds 😂😂
The stands and compression tester look brand new - I could also find reasons to get new tools for a project 🛠

Karen might have to add a dollarydoo to the swear jar 😅 Had to buy a new compression testing kit, went to try the "old" set and the gauge wouldn't hold compression...Kurtis had let a "mate" use it a few months back, low and behold now it's not working and we have to buy a new kit...this is why his friends are now birds 😂😭

Morning Kurtis!! I used to wrench class 7 & 8 trucks at a Peterbilt dealer here in the states, after three back surgeries my surgeon suggested I make a more body friendly career change, that was over 20 years ago, don't miss it whatsoever. You made a good decision to change the dayton style spoke wheels to the Budd wheels...bling my crane....never heard that one before!!! Y'all stay safe!!
Kingpins and bushings are probably alright, we hope so at least.
That might be a real nitemare to make right
It was a brilliant episode, and it was great to see another side of the business and Kurtis's endless skill sets. Massive credit to Karen for filming. I think we need a Karen narration takeover soon 😅
Your repore with those birds is incredible.
My uncle Al, vice president of a major automotive supplier company said, "Large commercial machinery, large commercial repairs." and this crane suggests he was right. It also reminded me of the Jaguar XK120 FHC I bought in 1961 thinking I would just paint it and have a lovely car. I wound up doing an off chassis rebuild, full engine rebuild that took me 3 years. I'm pleased to hear that parts are readily available and that you will be upgrading the brakes and rims. It's a super machine and I'm sure it will serve you well! Karin, Bruce, Halgrim and Bella wish you a pleasant weekend!
Who ever edits these video does a very good job. She knows when to fast forward through lug nuts and get good close ups. It really makes a difference when watching a video. Thank you so much.
That’s the other half of the team of two, Karen.
'Bling out your crane', is a great line, you know your audience to go over the cost-effectiveness of picking this crane out cheaper and working on it yourself.

Hi CEE team :) Just down the road from your workshop is another small business that could be a good collaboration on the crane project. i had do a kia J2 diesel pump and injector rebuild recently - Karl at KRM diesel in Ormeau i found to be a straight up good bloke, truly helpful, did a fair price on pump and injector rebuild - after install the result is flawless they did a good job. Being a small business as well as being just a good bloke Karl at KRM diesel would be just the diesel pump/injector service rebuild to help out. Give them a call. Cheers Paul.
Great recomendation !
How interesting, Kurtis has another name and that is Karl or Carl, it’s a bit of an ‘in’ joke among long time watchers of the channel. Someone sent Kurtis a box of beers and there was a note that started Dear Karl. That name stuck for a while as a joke. Anyway I wonder if the postie mixed up the two workshops and the beer was supposed to go to the diesel shop. 😂
I was working with my uncle on this style of lug nut when I was probably 16, first time I had ever been around any sort of big truck.
He didn't leave the lugnut on and the little wedge flew across his shop and hit his pole barn wall and bounced back roughly 10ft.... we were probably 40 feet from the wall 😂

Man the next few + videos of this crane are going to be Awesome!!! Lots wrong with it but the videos about it are great. I ended up swapping all my hubs/brakes over to the same 10 bolt on my crane about 2 years ago and I can say this it's way way way cheaper than the original parts that came on my crane and very easy to find the parts as well. Great work!!!
Not to mention how scary those wedges are.
Hey Kurtis, hey Karen. Hope all is great with you guys. Shout out to Homie! I think the birds are spreading the word that Kurtis has free food for them! Cheers!
Used equipment is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get until you start tearing into them! Love the series. Sorry about the parts situation, makes sense to switch over to something that's readily available to you. In the US those are bog standard parts. P.S. I'd pay money to see Kurtis drift the crane!
That might require Karen to learn some CGI animation skills.
Would be easy here in Finland in the winter, I have (usually unintentionally) drifted trucks, wheel loaders and even tracked excavators on ice. In Australia not so easy.

@@dhache1195 I used to drive a Chevy Express 2500 panel van, we carried a quite a lot of weight in them so the rear wheel drive in the snow was not as bad as it could be but when you were on the road in snow it was still easier to goose the throttle just a little to get the backend to slide out when you needed to make a turn. I was quite good at it, a few times I ended up a little past 90 degrees in my turn but I never lost control and ended up sideways. If I just relied on the front wheels for steering I would never have made a successful left turn in heavy snow!

Really glad you explained about the wedge locks on the spiders. I knew what you were doing but I wonder how many people didn't. Well done.
Thanks Kurtis, helps a lot!
I had to laugh when you said that there isn't much room to get at the fuel pump. My '90's era Telehandler has a Perkins engine and to get at both sides of the engine you have to go from underneath or take the cab off. Great content, I am looking forward to the next instalment.

We love projects!! Gotta think on the brightside, you got the gift of youtube to make it all better 😊 the more broken the better
I own an excavator which had the same engine/pump problem as your crane. Though my excavator is a bit older, the high pressure diesel pump on a Perkins engine, is rather straight forward to dis/reassemble. My pump just needed a new set of gaskets, which I found in the UK priced at around 25 £.
So it should be fairly cheap to get the pump working again.
PS: as always, excellent video. Love such projects.
The word - fantastic for this content is not enough.
