And immediately, one might ask why didn't fender do something more like this with their ukes? Flight went out on a limb with this one, and there are a few gaffs, but I like it, it looks like a decent instrument for some electric fun. Nice review, as always!

Boy, Flight is really kicking it, eh? This time they beat Kala to the punch. I don’t care for it, I have no desire to play a steel string E uke, but I can see the potential, especially for the younger crowd.
I have no idea what I would do with it, but a friend who is a George Harrison imitator would get a real kick out of this.

They probably added a seperate fret board to make it easier to install that truss rod. If they hadn't done that they would have had to route out a channel on the back of the neck and fit a skunk stripe, which takes longer and is harder to get right. Installing the truss road from the front and gluing a fretboard over the top is just a more economical way of building an instrument.

I actually like the darker blue on the back, I like the contrast. The electric ukes do seem to be gaining popularity, as my "pending" Vorson purchase, (two months later, and still out of stock), seems to attest. Nice to see another more affordable electric uke come on the market. The price of a Risa is a bit much, if you just want to see if an electric uke is right for you. Wow. Not really my cup of tea, but my Dad (he's 82 Dec 28th) would probably love it, but then he's been playing electric guitar in bands for 60+ years!! Might show him this at Christmas lunch...may start to see the Ukulele as a real instrument. I, on the other hand, am decidedly acoustic in preference - I do own an electric acoustic, (Martinez "Southern Belle"Concert) and have just purchased an upgrade in the form of a Flight Mustang (locally) and Romero Creations Mango Grand Tenor (no pickup) from SUS. It's actually quite a striking instrument, but I agree regarding the back colour...would have thought a shade darker than the darkest front blue would be as far you'd want to go. Don't feel the need to add it to my little collection, but it might make a good Fathers day gift in 2021. Hope you and yor family are staying safe, and have a great Christmas.

@@GotAUkulele No so i will have to do a little bit of carpentry. Dig about a 1/2 inch or so on each side so that they can fit. Like with the Vorson they probably did not use the best quality pickups to keep price low.. I replaced one of the pickups already on the Vorson actually with DiMarzio's True Velvet middle pickup in the neck position. I saw a video of someone who replaced the pickups on their Vorson with Seymour Duncan single coils which were full sized guitar pickups. I liked the sound it produced. Seymour Duncan brand is a good quality pickup too but I opted for DiMarzio. I have always been a fan of DiMarzio brand pickups. i have DiMarzio PAF pickups on my Ibanez electric guitar. At some point I may replace the bridge pickup in the Vorson too as well with a DiMarzio True Velvet bridge pickup. Sometimes the DiMarzio's i want are at a good price on Amazon for between 69 to 100 US. Changing out the pickups and strings will make it a bit closer to the same level as a Risa. May replace the switcher on the Pathfinder as well. With all the upgrades i might as well buy a Risa some would say but i like customizing.

In my opinion one major big difference regarding the sound feeling with these electric ukuleles will be that it comes in low G tuning. Lots of people have the high G tuning in their ears/mind, when thinking about ukuleles, which give this nice Hawaii sound. After watchin your video yesterday, I directly ordered one used Flight Pathfinder electric ukulele. Maybe I will also try a high G tuning, by using a differente G-string. I calculated the new G-string (0.28mm) by considering to have the same string tension (Arround 55 N) as the other 3 strings, but the G is tuned one octave higher.
    So, insted of using the original Strings (4=0.66mm(26), 3=0.43mm(17), 2=0.33mm(13), 1=0.25mm(10)), I will try this configuration: 4=0.28mm(11), 3=0.43mm(17), 2=0.33mm(13), 1=0.25mm(10).
Did you already tried this? Of cause afterwards it might be necesarry to adjust the bridge.

It looks great, i'll give you that but that's pretty much were the excitement ends for me, i'v watched a couple more reviews before i watched yours today, including the one comparing it with a Risa, i have to say i was not impressed sound wise. i love Flight and ordered a second Uke from them just a week ago but i think they have a long way to go when it comes to solid body electric ukuleles, it's a whole different animal that requires higher skills in order to achieve good intonation, smooth playability and choosing the right electronics. i also think the thin strings are a big mistake, with an electric ukulele that is designed to play rock music, i believe higher gauge and 3rd and 4th wound strings are a must . finally the amp, and i get your point but still, just as the average guitar player would play a decent quality 20W-30W amp (doesn't have to be tube amp), you need to play it through a decent amp in order to get the sound it deserves. I do hope they fix those issues for their next line (if they decide to go for it at all) as well as adding a Baritone to the mix, if the price remains in that area i'll be happy to try one.

    • @MrLoompi

Strings are the same gauge as Risa STRISAST-T 10-26 for example. Also correct intonation is easier to achieve on electric Guitars etc, due to adjustable saddles, as opposed a fixed/glued wooden bridge on Acoustic instrument.

I am curious if these solid body ukes will be any famous in the next few years. I don't understand why it goes out of tune in the first fret. The Risa solid ukes have been around for approaching 10 years and they sell out as soon as shops get them. - so I would say they will.
There is no issue with the nut on this (it has a zero fret) - but playing trad uke chord sequences tends to employ a harder grip on the neck that wont work on a steel string electric.

I'm not really a fan of electric ukes right now mainly because I feel like they are trying too hard to copy a guitar. Despite their similarity in appearance, they are still different instruments and that should be taken into consideration when making something like this. It really just needs more development to really emphasise the unique specialities of an ukulele and someone new to take it to the same heights as an electric guitar.

They are probably not by bag either - but then I own electric guitars. But when you see the demand the shops face from buyers to get hold of them, I suspect we are in the minority!

@@GotAUkulele I guess it's quite understandable considering the reputation of the electric guitar and how many people want to play the ukulele in the same way. It's just that the uke is too different and I think thats just overlooked out of excitement.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like my electric lead guitar. You have the same amp as me! I won't be buying it as not the sound I'm now after. Want a more ukulele sound ta.

It doesnt sound anywhere as nice as the the Fanner Pixelator Tenor. I think the second pickup on the bridge is completely unnecessary and one would have surficed. Sounds a bit screechy with not much low end.... Guessing its high G on the G string?

Couldn't comment - never played a Fanner - asked to get one on the site but.. no dice so far. Would happily review one if he sent one over.

    How tall is this ukulele?

Why? For a case measurement? Length of instrument is not particularly relevant - it's a tenor.

If you change out the strings for a thicker gauge it sounds much better, the strings it comes with makes it sound thin and unstable. Much better with new strings!
