If Todd had written just this one song it would qualify him as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. But he has a 40 year catalog of songs like this. Makes no difference if he ever receives a nod from the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame or the mediocre "world at large." He's touched the lives of millions of fans and his great art and integrity are intact. Music this good will never fade away.
It's amazing that so many of his real fans often have the same sentiments toward him. His music has become an indelible part of our lives. We attribute certain songs to certain times in our lives, happy or sad, there they were. Telling our story in a way that says..."you get it...you know how that feels". He is our personal storyteller. Some people just don't get it, but that's ok. And for those that do, no explanation is necessary.
We all love you Todd... Your message of love, compassion and peace is ...THE message. You are our musical-poetic voice. We long-term fans...our DNA is woven with your tonal fibers. The true voices are rarely recognized - take it as a complement. Bob -Ultrasonic Studios
I stopped crying long enough to stare mesmerized near the climax of the song where he hit the high note...and flawlessy. no auto tune or back up singers.
So Glad to hear that a person of 19 can "get it" with Todd. His music is all about love...and much of it is quite sophisticated -such as this piece. We old guard love you Todd.. always will. Thanks for not loosing your muse through the bumps.
I am so proud to be able to listen to the genius that is Mr. Rundgren. I couldn't ask for better music to chill to, reflect upon, dance to and walk my doggy with. His music moves me more than any other artist. Even though I was a mere child when his first albums came out, his music continues to survive the decades.
Nearly 60 years old,and he's still got it. I tell ya,if he never gets inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, then that'll be in my opinion a spit in the face of music itself. Todd is unarguably the most under rated musical genius of all time.
Before attending this very concert, I told my brother of a dream I had the previous night that he sang this song, my favourite, to both of us whilst sitting under a parasol on a sunny day. Imagine my surprise when the opening chords started - he has such a huge portfolio of music I was astonished when he sang it. It reduced me to tears- only the second time in my life at a live concert. He just did it again listening ten years later. What a genius this guy is....
Astounding artist. Nobody in popular music has the range and depth of Todd Rundgren's power as a performer. They all pretend while he delivers the real deal.
I've always adored this song. It's heartbreaking. Full of longing. The music, the lyrics and his achingly plaintive voice. Why don't you care about me? Oh, God. Brilliant.
Oh my freaking god. This is outrageously great...one of my favorite Todd songs. No Autotune here, folks (or on any of his albums). Lot to learn from Rundgren, one of the greatest talents of the music world. He's a huge influence on my writing.
I know I've commented before, but this is truly the most incredible and heartfelt performance of this beautiful song. The lyrics make me cry... every time.
That's a haunting tune-classic Rundgren-he's great at comin' at ya sideways with suspended chords that are almost like modulations, and they really work!!Thanks Matt & Rundgrenfan once again!
When my daughter was a baby she needed major surgery, I stayed in hospital for many nights. Trying to calm her, this was the only song that I could remember every single word to. I sang it to her quietly over and over. Now when I hear Todd sing this, my eyes just tear up very quickly. It's a beautiful, haunting song, and the strings added to it just amazing. Thank you Todd for so many years.
I have also been fortunate enough to see Todd many times in my life. His soul pours out into his music, pure passion, raw emotion, perfection at it's best! Love you Todd!
A belated Happy Birthday Todd. So, yeah, we're all a little more filled-out and silver-haired, but your voice, lyrics and talent only get better as time passes. You are my true musical messiah. Thanks for all the years of metamorphosis.
I was at this very show. I can't tell you how happy I am that there's a record of this performance. Genuine musical history right here and never bettered.
I love this song, it is one of his saddest. Usually there's some sort of positive message in his songs somewhere. This is one where I think he was letting someone go and it hurt like hell.
The best live vocal performance I've heard from Todd in a long while. I know it's 13 years ago that's what makes it so great. I'm glad I caught MANY live Todd shows in my day.
Watching and listening to Todd R. has brought my understanding and appreciation for music to a whole new level. He is in a certain genius category all by himself. Very unique.
well said....and those who LOVE TODD do love him well ....I've seen him only once in Austin; I had somewhere to be that night, was driving, heard on radio tht he was playing in Austin....in 1.5 hrs...I called the person I was to met elsewhere whil I was driving and said, I CAN'T MEET U, I HAVE TO GO SEE TODD RUNDGREN!
how does tod know just how to express all this" terrible beauty", called the human condition , so well it rips ur heart out, but yet u cant help but want to hear more? beautiful, my man, and thank you, dam you! lol!! you express things of the heart that most people dont have the words to describe... like nobody else...period!

This is absolutely amazing and wonderful and beautiful. Thank you sharing it. I am a huge fan of the Acapella album and this song specifically. Peace Always, Jason
Todd is the best! He is nominated for the 2019 R&R Hall Of Fame and he deserves to be in there! You can vote for him daily until Dec.9th here: www.rockhall.com/fanvote
When I first heard this song I became Addicted to hearing it on repeat as I then Worked On What Turned out to be One of my most favorite drawings which Became a Painting Everyday For 2 Months Which I made a playlist of This Song with Hundreds of this song. Todd Is Such a Genius w Music. We Are All so lucky to Listen To his Fab Tuneage ❤️🔥☮️🕊️🗽🌹💙🎂
What a nice odd off key song to put the nail in the thought that someone pretending to care about you is bent and a twisted emotion..an oddly beautiful song from a guty whose willing to show people how to feel ,when they have no way to express it themselves ...Todd the musical life coach. very nice video . thanks for posting it here 4 us .
This is easily one of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs of all time. In fact, there is only one song that I can think of that compares: "When You Go" by Jonathan Coulton, and Coulton himself admits that he kinda had this song in mind when he was writing his. Anyway, just beautiful... I need a tissue, I think I got some 'dust' in my eye...
He looks great. I get the feeling he'd be happier singing to noone else, but we all want him to perform for us and he has succumbed to his destiny as a great talent that needs to be shared. I don't see any ego in him.
I have been a TR fan for a short time (compared to some of you). I saw him in concert recently, and his voice was amazing! His talent is beyond what words can describe. A true American Star.
That tour was awesome I wish he would do that again. Starting out as a teenager and for the most part I think Todd was self learned music himself with his body of work and mind I would put todd with the greats I thank God that Todd is still doing music Milan276 akron ohio
Todd IS Godd, this just goes to show, among so many other fantastic songs!! Fuck Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame if they can't see the genius that has been so productive in over 5 decades. That's only because he never went corporate and commercial but just did what he wanted to do and never cared what you and i or anyone thought about that! That's why he is more PUNK in my opinion then any tattoed and pierced punkband of the '90's or '00's will ever be, no matter how hard they try!!
sapienza43; you said it all...I love the comment about "we have his music all to ourselves." I struggle with the fact that he has not gotten the acclaim, as you mention. But, I love going to see him at an intimate venue in NYC.
The video was shot by my good friend Paul T from Phoenix AZ in the next seat to me. I posted the whole concert on Dime a while back. The string quartet is Ethel and backed TR and Joe Jackson on their tour. They have their own career. Hey rundgrenfan, maybe post The Lord Chancellor's Nightmare Song too. That was a show stopper!

No pretending here. I really care. My tears are falling into my kepboard. Todd will NOT fade away.
BRAVO
Todd still can make me cry..Thank God for you Todd, I'm in a world that just doesn't want to cry.
It's amazing that so many of his real fans often have the same sentiments toward him. His music has become an indelible part of our lives. clehrbar I so relate to your comment.. Long time Todd fan, always hanging onto his every sung lyric. ❤❤❤❤

Anyone wanna doubt this man's genius after that clip? Pah. I hope he does get the credit he deserves before he's gone.
Such divine sorrow in this song. Every word, every note reaches deep into my soul.
That's a haunting tune-classic Rundgren-he's great at comin' at ya sideways with suspended chords that are almost like modulations, and they really work!!Thanks Matt & Rundgrenfan once again!
Love the A Capella album, and this song in particular - but the string quartet gives it a classic, ballad, chamber-music sound. Lovely indeed.
An amazing artist, an outstanding song. Thank you Todd Rundgren for staying true to yourself and not selling out:)))

A belated Happy Birthday Todd. So, yeah, we're all a little more filled-out and silver-haired, but your voice, lyrics and talent only get better as time passes. You are my true musical messiah. Thanks for all the years of metamorphosis.

This song makes me cry every time.
I was at this very show. I can't tell you how happy I am that there's a record of this performance. Genuine musical history right here and never bettered.
This is so incredibly beautiful! I love this performance. Thank you so much for posting this perfection.
I love this song, it is one of his saddest. Usually there's some sort of positive message in his songs somewhere. This is one where I think he was letting someone go and it hurt like hell.

Got to be one of the best ballads I've heard in a long time.
i agree, this song always makes me cry
This version is king.
It would be wise IMHO to reproduce it in the studio in this manner.
The string quartet is perfect for the song and perfectly arranged.

I cannot watch this too many times. I saw him do it during his A Capella concert in 1985 or 86. Absolutely freaking amazing.
This is absolutely amazing and wonderful and beautiful. Thank you sharing it. I am a huge fan of the Acapella album and this song specifically. Peace Always,
Jason

A performance with Ethel and Joe jackson
I saw and heard them in Brussels in 2005
Great !!
i love this man so.
sapienza43; you said it all...I love the comment about "we have his music all to ourselves." I struggle with the fact that he has not gotten the acclaim, as you mention. But, I love going to see him at an intimate venue in NYC.
Could this be the saddest song ever written? It's hard to type through the tears.
He's the only artist that does this to me on a regular basis.....L
This guy is a musical genius period! If you dont like this song too bad.. Go listen to Kid Rock!
amen! sometimes i wish todd would be on Idol as one of those guests who help the kids-he would have so much to teach them about passionate singing
Aspire to this, whatever your genre of music, rap, hip hop, grime, put you back into it.
He still sounds excellent!
Todd is 61, he was 59 when he did this and I agreee he still gets the job done
The 3 that dislike this song have no heart at all. I pity them.
We love this.
Incredible!
amazing he can still hit that upper register with such power!
Its such a treat to hear live strings instead of fake keyboard sounds!
