Yes, definitely Back To The Bars era. Don't know where the video is from, but I was lucky enough to see this show many times when Todd played the Bottom Line in NYC for almost a week. A mixed band, and it kept changing all night. With all the aforementioned folks and Kasim and Moogy too!
Thanks for posting this. The mimes are a bust as mimes and backup singers. Todd was never afraid to take a risk though. Considering that TR was his own backup singer on the album version of this song, they'd be hard pressed to top him. The album version is better, and I've listened to and loved that one since I was 8. But at 3:20, the hair on my neck stands up. Todd lets out a blood curdling scream that conveys a raw emotion that is different than the album cut. EVERYTHING is on the table and pushed across the line at this point. Everything. As a performer and artist, Todd Rundgren made a habit of doing this like few ever dare to do. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Please. Love me some TR!
this guy has to be Liv Tyler's true father. anyone can see that. it is in the way he moves, the tilt of his head, his facial construction. just look at him.
Any videos of performances from "A Wizard , a True Star" or "Initiation"?. I have to agree on the mysterious quality of his singing- it conjures up more than it should.
I think the Hello People should probably stick to what mimes do best...silence! Wow, some off-key singing in the chorus! Still great to see this performance.
Man, Bag Lady--another great combination of melody and lyric. I get ticked off when I try to sing it--not enough range. :) Have you checked out the "Change Myself" Letterman video?? Roger
One morning in April 1989 I heard that my dear old nan had died. I played this song and balled my eyes out. It’s reminded me of her ever since
Bag Lady always makes me feel humble! and thankful for what I have been given.
Todd is a true artist, love this.
This song I claim as my all time favorite Todd piece--not an easy task picking one. Lyrics are awesome-gives me chills.
And if you are a musician, he is the guiding light. He certainly is mine.
Probably the best album of all time, Hermit of Mink Hollow, class

The mimes are The Hello People. They were Todd's backup band in the early 70's and sang backup on tours.
I have a Hello People record from 1968, and it is surprisingly good!
The recorded track from Hermit is the version to listen to, it's great

This was a late June 1978 broadcast of the Midnight Special.
I Totally agree with you, This whole album is Awesome. Bag Lady always gives me chills. bei1016
I see the Joni Mitchell connection... this piano intro reminds me of a song on Ladies of the Canyon...
Love Todd, Hate mimes
Excellent... 5 stars!
Love it, Todd is Godd!

It looks like Willie Wilcox on drums, and John Seigler on bass though.
Thank God for punk rock.
R.I.P. Moogy

Have to agree. Great song, but I could do without the mime.
The Hello People's singing is right in key. It's Todd's guitar that's out of toon.
I could really do with out the Mime skit.
what does that mean? i dont understand this new use of the word gay. please explain?
Did you do the bird? Go do the bird. Come on don’t talk back, mime is money!
mimes are like STINK BUGS...kill one, another appears...damn pests!
alright Todd your turn
The difference.
stop hating on the mines people.....mines get no respect.......
Joni Mitchell? What are you talking about. Laura Nyro YES J.M. ? ? Not so much
oh god, make it stop.
Todd is God, but even God makes mistakes. Not his best moment,
