    Starting the business is the easy part. Finding clients has proven to be a challenge. I'm almost three years in and only have two clients. I'm actually getting ready to go back to work outside the home. 😢

      I quit my 9-5 and at 4 months into it I only have 1 client and 1 potential client. I've had 1 clean up and 1 training session. I know my name has been given to several people but they don't call. It's hard to be pushy when it comes to someone deciding on their finances.

      Truth is, it takes time. And this line of work excels much on recommendations. It is not easy for someone to trust you with their business secrets.

    Great video. I told you in a comment 2 maybe 3 weeks ago that you inspired me to take the quickbooks online exam overnight and how I literally passed it overnight. Thanks for your inspiring personal response. So inspired , I took the advanced quickbooks online exam a week later and passed that too. Then I did the intuit bookkeeper exam badge. Passed that one too 2 days ago. Now I am trying to take a nice picture to put on my ProAdvisor profile, then put myself out there. Thanks for all the great tips....and inspiration.

    I am looking to leave my current job in about a year to travel more. I am looking for a career change that I can do virtually while traveling. I already do the bookkeeping for my husbands company and I really enjoy it but it is very basic, so I am wanting to learn more to take on other clients.

    Hi, Morgan, I’ve been watching your videos for probably around a year now, and I just finished the Keyboard Rich Challenge with Bill from Booming Bookkeeping Business. I am working at my church as the bookkeeper, a job I started in October 2023, and I inherited messy books. I really want to start a bookkeeping business and quit my part-time cleaning job. However, inheriting messy books has caused me to feel like I don’t fully understand how to do bookkeeping because the way they’re set up is wrong & in desperate need of a cleanup. I have a lot of anxiety surrounding owning my own business, but I’m also really motivated right now, having just finished Bill’s challenge. In my job, we’re looking into having a good bookkeeper help us clean up our books, and then I will work on making sure 2024 is set up the way we want it from here on out. Once that’s done, I feel like I’ll have my head around the skill of bookkeeping better, and I’ll have more time to focus on starting my business. I’m not sure why I’m telling you all this. Do you have any suggestions on how I should proceed?

      Hey! Learning on the job can always feel a bit uneasy, but it sounds like you're taking the right steps (getting training, making sure things are done right moving forward, etc). Have you seen Morgan's video on clean ups? It might help you as you work on getting your church's books on the right track. ua-cam.com/video/2B6zFQurRXQ/v-deo.html

      I see that as a challenge. In their way, cleaning messes tells the client how badly they need your services. You should be glad there's a mess to clean. Thats mostly the reason for bookkeeping.
      And yeah, its okay to be overwhelmed by that. But you'll be fine. Trust me, it always get better.

    I'm afraid of starting my own business and not making as much as I do now. Especially since you are now in charge of both sides of payroll taxes. I am also afraid that to make up for my 9-5 income, I will have to work a crazy amount of hours that will make it not worth it. I want flexibility, not 60-hour work weeks :( Is it possible?

    I am having difficulty figuring out what permits and licenses I need. I went with sole proprietorship with dba if I do well change to llc later. Do i need a security alarm, land use permit and I recently heard I can't use my personal computer space that I have to have a private dedicated room for my business. My computer is in my living room and I use it for gaming also.

    • @FinePointsBookkeeping
      @FinePointsBookkeeping  3 місяці тому +2

      You may be overcomplicating things? I would say, just get started with clients if you're ready. I don't know what a security alarm or land use permit is. For your office space, there may be certain parameters if you want to use the office as a tax deduction... but that is likely a small dollar amount. A tax prep person could help you with the specifics, but I wouldn't let all those details stop you from running your bookkeeping business. You can figure out some of it as you go. :)

    • @AvatarKira
      @AvatarKira 3 місяці тому

      I get what you mean about the security alarm and land use permits and such. Certain counties/states do require the security alarm depending on how you intend to set up your business with your local government. I live in an apartment in Oregon and I'm going through the process of setting up the business licenses and the county requires specific applications to be submitted since I'm wanting to run my business from my home. Best bet is to go to your county's government website or even to their offices to get clear and concise requirements for submitting for a business license.
