Guys like you and Luke played on the soundtrack of what I assumed would be my youth but it turns out it’s the soundtrack to my life. The clean guitars direct to the board for guys like Michael Jackson and the drive from songs by Springfield, Toto and hundreds of other bands. I’m so grateful for the music.
Man it's crazy to consider the body of work Quincy's crew did. Just about everything that came out from the late 70s through the mid 80s had these guys on it. Luke is on every damn song!

This is a great demo. I've always felt there was this blurry line between rhythm and lead guitar that seemed like I should be learning/playing as if rhythm and lead were one and the same task.

Being a long time Larry Carlton fan, I first heard Luke on the "Live in Japan" production with Larry. I thought that it was Larry playing those incredible leads and was really surprised when I saw on video that it was Luke. The element of Luke's rhythm that you're bringing to bear really impresses me, given that Luke's solos aren't exactly known for their subtleness . Thanks for bringing this to our attention. And, I just might add, thank your body of work , as well.

Even though I grew up listening to Toto I never realized how prolific and incredible Steve Lukather was as a musician. Tim, you have the rare ability to make me forget I play guitar, smile uncontrollably, and simply love the music I hear and see flowing for this human who is at one with his gift. Sheer joy.
I saw Jeff in San Francisco a few years back. It was incredible. No words really. And then Santana made a surprise visit. And they jammed. What a concert. In these past 40-odd years I've never heard Steve play the wrong thing. I don't mean from a technique/chops perspective, although he's up with the greats here, but I mean from a musical perspective. His musicality melts my mind. He plays the right thing for the situation every single time. Never too much, never too little. Never grabbing more attention than he should and never fading away. Absolutely perfect musician.
Best moment of the video is at 14:17 where Tim just can’t contain his love for the way Lukey plays the brilliant guitar in Human Nature !!!!!! Thank you Tim….this is Brilliant !!!
Keep Forgetting is my favorite song ever. I love Michael MacDonald. This many years later I'm watching all kinds of Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro videos and have come to realize they are the players on it. Where have I been?! Just makes me appreciate it that much more. Love this video, Tim. Amazing playing.
Tasty playing always impressed me more than pyrotechnics. That's why I was immediately taken with George Benson after growing up on rock and pop. With a clean tone and just technique and note selection I was wow'd way more than anything I'd heard to date.
I got to see Toto live back pretty early in my life, I was only 16 years old back in 1988, during The Seventh One tour. at the time my parents took me as I was a fan of theirs and my parents ended up being fans, especially after the show, it was private show in Toronto with very few seats and in the middle of the day, so there wasn't a whole lot of people there. It was very cool to see them like that.
We live in a golden era with you unleashing your wisdom and knowledge and Rhett Shull and the Great Rick Beato tuning in also. The list goes on and on. When I started out in the 80’s there was virtually nothing to gain all this knowledge. Thanks guys 👏
You're playing always amazes me, but aside from loving the sound of your playing, I think you're my favorite guitarist to watch because of the perma-grin on your face as you play. I can't think of anyone looking so joyful while playing.
I absolutely agree with you, Tim. Lukather is fantastic. Met him a few times, and I wish I could balance out what he gave me over all these years. I owe him so much simply by listening many many hours to such great music... And personally I am - of course - blown away by his "lead guitar skills", but still love much more his rhythm playing. That's where all his genius really shines. As you mentioned, Tim: "... all these firepower !!! ...and he decides to do a one note reggae thing on the chorus...". Thanks for this Clip, Tim. I am really happy & thankful for your UA-cam-Channel and the huge amount a fine, fine work you put in here....! All Thumbs Up! Best Greetings from Germany. Michael.
I love this video and find myself watching it every other day because it really opened my eyes on the beauty of rhythm guitar. “I Keep Forgetting” and “Oro De Ley” have that style of guitar that aren’t crazy complicated yet sound phenomenal.
Thank you so much for sharing this, Tim! "Human Nature" still gives me the chills when I hear it, precisely for the reasons you mention here. That tune and its performance are like a master class in musical execution, taste, and restraint. All of that comes together to make a very powerful emotional statement without having to shout it to the world. Utterly beautiful. Cheers!
Jeez Tim after all these years Im just getting into Steve Lukather and you just oh man summed it up so incredibly well. wqow Im signing up for the masterclass. Im 70 yrs old and have been playing since i was 10. Its just been a hobby but so rewarding. Love your channel and everything you do
Great video, Steve is my favorite guitar player over 35 years. And it's great to hear you playing and talking about him with so much admiration. The thing that blowed me away about him, is the second solo in rosanna it's a improvisation, that's just genius
Hi Tim, I love how much you enjoy playing music. You always look like you're having the time of you life - smiling, laughing and totally getting into it. I love your playing...
You are a true artist Tim. Your playing is not openly technically outstanding, but ridiculously tasteful. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Lukather at his studio. One of the highlights of May life.
I agree with you that Steve is playing tastier nowadays than ever before . His phrasing is phenomenal and filled with feeling, especially on his solo albums. . One of his albums is called transition ,and that’s what it is : a slow and continuous transition over 45 years of playing guitar , combined with life itself. Just brilliant!
You are Sooooo right... Leland Skar was recently sharing his work with Luke on the "transition" album... Both solos of "Creep Motel" are so musical and inspired...
You made my day watching this. I was having a bad day at work and hearing this made it go alot better. I can see how he blends a little bit of a base line into the rhythm
Great video. Been hearing that for years from instructors and at clinics "simplicity" - "service to the song". I'm a drummer so it was drilled into my head that a drummers main job is to make the other musicians your playing with feel comfortable, 'pocket', so they can do theirs. It was also drilled into me that listening and looking at the other musicians your playing with is so important. Get out of your own head and make music!
"I Keep Forgettin’" is just one of those magic tracks where the band sounds like a single organism, so keyed into each other. So many neat little flourishes, like the descending bass run, the bell-like synth part that pops in from time to time, that double bass drum part just played once in the outro, and of course Lukather’s masterful percussive rhythm throughout.
I have come to love Steve Lukather's guitar playing. Every time I've heard a guitar that catches my ear and wonder who's playing it, IT'S HIM! Introduced to him in Toto and the solo on "Rosanna" to the solo on Lionell Richie's "Running with the Night". Didn't know it was him on "I Keep Forgetting" and " Human Nature" which I really love both of those guitar parts. Thanks for what you do. And I love the way you really have fun and enjoy what you play. I see it in your face. Every time you do something nice you have the biggest smile on your face. I love it. Think I'll be joining the master class.
I love this video I have Dejavu here as just last night I was playing thos partsby ear they just jumped into my head. I am partially sighted and cn't read music I just use my ears and that works for me. You, Rick Niato and Steve really inspire me to play. I feel free when I play and it helps my anxiety go away when i'm having a bad day. Amazing
Ok. I normally dont like long intro jams. But i just played one of my best solos, on a new guitar i bought yesterday, with a killer rhythm player. Thanks Tim !! That was Awesome !!
Wow, ok I am 55 years old and never realized what a talented guitarist. Making simplicity sound amazing is easy to overlooked. My favorite Michael Jackson song is human nature and I never realized that it was Steve on 🎸
very tasteful. sophisticated. thanks for the vid! i saw an interview with steve where he said 90% of his sessions were rhythm guitar. I like the way you played a combination of muting the strings, rhythm and lead fills. and very tasteful.
The song I'm playing over is Michael McDonald's "I keep forgettin" then also MJ's "Human Nature"
indeed I just figured that out. He also did a version with the Doobie Brothers.
Yea immediately recognized it. Noice! Love 💕 how happy you look playing. Reminds me of Eddie Van Halen. You should get together with John Mayer.

We live in a golden era with you unleashing your wisdom and knowledge and Rhett Shull and the Great Rick Beato tuning in also. The list goes on and on. When I started out in the 80’s there was virtually nothing to gain all this knowledge. Thanks guys 👏
Thanks for listening
Tim Pierce is the man!!!
No, he's not.
hi Tim, thanks for celebrating Luke! truly feel he still doesn’t get the recognition and respect he deserves! but this helps! cheers!
Tim that intro is killing, that is such a great hit tune with great harmony
That Tom Anderson sounds fantastic! I've wanted to hear those tracks more clearly! Thank you so much! I love ❤️ Lukather.
Wow! That intro was the best thing I've heard in a while. Long live you and "The Luke".
Both solos of "Creep Motel" are so musical and inspired...
so good Tim, thanks
Tim sensie your playing gives me Joy and Inspiration to even practice more and furnish my craft! Bless you, always Sensie!
30+ years of playing and I feel like I need to start over after watching this. Such great tasteful playing. Jesus.
Great pocket Tim, and, what a joy to hear the late GIANT, Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro, hell yeah !!!
Double Bass? Jeff Porcaro played that with one foot
I love you Tim
Thank you for your smile and gentle way of learning
Thank You Tim for bringing this massive amount of Joy to us mortals!!!
It is delicious watching You play!!!
Thank You!!!!
The main riff to Michael Jackson’s beat it (EVH on lead guitar) was his too, as well as Cher’s If I could turn back time.
Thanks for unpacking the alchemy Of taste and groove.
Much Gratitude
Tim's joy overflows right through the technology the internet and YT!
Amazing
It’s always something special to see an older guy playing some good ol’ western pentatonic bluesy type stuff on the guitar
My favorite Michael Jackson song is human nature and I never realized that it was Steve on 🎸
I love seeing the pure joy on your face.
Incredible I can Here Michaels voice in my head
HAHAHAHAHA. Yes, I heard him too.
The joy you derive from your guitar is so infectious! I'm sure I'd be grinning like that too if I could do what you do!
Tim is in his happy place .. such a happy face and besutiful playing ..love it .
From Australia 🦘🦘 🦘
Tim reminds me of Fozzy Bear from the Muppets the way he kept smiling open mouthed while playing over the intro song "Keep Forgettin" 🤣
very tasteful. sophisticated. thanks for the vid! i saw an interview with steve where he said 90% of his sessions were rhythm guitar. I like the way you played a combination of muting the strings, rhythm and lead fills. and very tasteful.
