I've read an interview with Tommy where he credits his mother for teaching him that it wasn't enough to play the guitar well.. you had to engage with the audience and be an entertainer. I think he might have listened to her!
Tommy Emmanuel was the first concert I attended when I was 13 in Australia. Got to see him again when I was 16. Both concerts were him electric with his full band. Huge sound and amazing band. He was my inspiration as a guitarist. He is such a down to earth, likeable and natural entertainer. I'm glad over time he has achieved the global recognition he deserves. 🎸🤘
I remember the first time I saw Tommy play live, it was at a music exhibition/guitar show at the RNA show grounds in Brisbane in the late 80's. I had only just started playing and fell in love with the then new Ibanez jem 777 which was on display at the Ibanez stand. My Dad was with me and he said let's go and see Tommy play at one of the stages. I had never even heard of him before but my dad was a fan. I knew we were about to be blown away when he come on the stage and introduces himself and then says " For those who haven't seen me play before, don't worry I won't break the guitar!" He definitely didn't disappoint.
When Joe openly humbles himself and bows to Tommy it is a true mark of respect.... it would have been amazing to have heard Tommy play with SRV as neither of them needed to look at what they were doing coz they were so 'in the zone'... awesome !!
I'm happy that Joe Satriani, a person who I immensely respect and admire, also thinks that Tommy is just on another level. There are many levels of great, but very few people ever become a transcendent master at something as artful as being a musician. Tommy is one such person.
Joe Satriani is such a gentleman. He would make any top ten list of the best guitarists in the world, and the respect he pays to Tommy is humbling to watch.
Even the hero's have hero's, Tommy is great, how about Phil Collen Definatley flying under the Radar in Def Leppards song before guitar solo phil-osophy
These are three guitarists that changed my life while getting older. It started with the DefLep guy Phil Collen, it continued with Satch and finally I discovered T.E. So for me this lineup is pretty off the charts.
And Tommy is a true gentleman too, met him years ago at Downtown Music in Annandale, I was a kid and he still chatted to me for ages and taught me how to tune my guitar so it would stay in tune.
This is the most awesome video. Seeing Joe Satriani give his stage to Tommy Emanuel.!!! Awesome job all. I hope everybody knows about Tommy Emanuel, everybody already knows who Joe is. I'm 50 and.only learned about Mr. Emanuel a year ago Super artist. Maybe I've been living under a rock...'nuff said.
I happened to see and hear Tommy Emmanuel live on Dec 5 in Lincoln, NE. He is among the greatest guitar players who has ever lived. I was totally blown away.
He is great but i do not think he is amongst the beat that ever lived. There are and have been guitarist just as good and or better. SRV, EVH and many more
Well Dion there is no bigger Eddie fan than myself as I was trying to learn his shit in the late 70's. I'm an accomplished guitarist and I couldn't say this with the amount of deserved passion that Tommy is by far the most incredible acoustic guitarist I have ever seen (3) times. SRV had a smooth style with some great licks and could write and sing and perform and was incredible. EVH is the most innovative electric guitarist to have ever lived. He could have retired after eruption as a god. But Tommy is so versatile and creative. He plays drums on the damn guitar, go check it out and enjoy. Cheers from Canada.
That was great! I never would have thought Satch and a telecaster would have been on the same stage! What I liked the most was Joe's subtle rhythm guitar on the first half of Stevies song. Reminded me kind of Steve Luthaker on Rossana. Very nice, very subtle. Tommy - what a guitarist and entertainer. You can just tell, he loves music and loves sharing. I think he is one of those extraordinarily rare guitarist that can literally be dropped in any venue and shine. Phil sounds great as well! Great post!!!
Thanks for posting this! I was watching this and reflecting back to the 80s when concerts and jams like this would happen at shows in the San Francisco Bay Area and video cameras were not allowed in so the only people enjoying these "magic moments" were those in attendance. Now people world wide can experience timeless moments like this. Thank you!
Without question these are two of the very best guitar players on the planet. Would love to have heard more of Tommy's guitar but having the cam next to Joe's stack smoked him out. Still an awesome clip. Not only is it rare to see a private concert, it's super rare to see a private concert with two monster guitarists. Big props to whoever recorded this.
I've been to 12 Tommy concerts since 2008....geez, what a talent. It's hard to believe that somebody can master an instrument like that until you see it.
I don't think anyone can beat Tommy on acoustic guitar. He has no equal from anyone I know of or have seen. How he manages to have exceptional rhythm, melody and beat at the same time is just Godly. As an electric guitarist he's as amazing and holds his own against any virtuoso blues/rock guitarist.
Wow! Satriani plays Tommy Emmanuel's version of SRV's Scuttle Buttin' (A.K.A Stevie's Blues) - Great thing that Tommy could do a dive bomb using a Telecaster. A lot of guitar magics under his sleeves
When you get into this level of excellence any attempt to rank one of them as better than the other is simply nitpicking. They live in a different universe.

Awesome performance by all three axemen and Stuuuuuuuu on bass! Love all these players!! Would have loved to have been. In attendance at this show! Awesome talent pool in this video!!
Great to see another one of these odd little gems on UA-cam. Some pretty heavyweight guitar talent. Emmanuel has long been an amazing guitarist and if anything he keeps getting better. I remember him as a much younger man doing all sorts of stuff. Accoustic and electric with his brother Phil (sadly now departed, but also a fantastic guitarist); electric with Dragon (for one album), with Southern Star Band backing Doug Parkinson, playing (very respectable) drums with Goldrush, touring and playing accoustic with Mike McClellan - just an incredible and versatile musician. Satriani is also amazing and Collen, who perhaps I have only thought of as a very good but not great guitarist really holds his own in very, very elite company. That must have been one incredible concert.
I couldn't hear the other guys as well as Joe in the mix and no Paul Gilbert but it was still great! I wish there was more. Big Joe Satch fan here! I've seen him live twice and was blown away.
Joe Satriani has made and played some of the finest music in this Universe. His precision and ability to create new technique to "bring it here" has no equal IMHO.
Tommy Emmanuel is as a fine a human being as he is a guitar player. I kind of know a local player name of Loren Barrigar who attended a workshop Tommy held in Nashville. They've been friends ever since. He loves sharing the stage. He loves teaching. He loves talking to fans.
These guys are just wow!! Tommy harmonized the melody with crazy color!! SSSSHEEEZE!! He's next level and is one of the few that are tagged: Certified Guitar Player!
I ABSOLUTELY love how Tommy is THE man of the hour. All the personality. All of the chops and more! The only one to bring an honest guitar player's sound. LOVE him soo much!!
What is a dishonest guitar players sound? The sound a player does not make, they still have to know how to play! There's room for them all, and it's not a competition!

Saw Stu, Johnathan and Joe at an Ibanez private NAMM party in 87. I sat on the front edge of the stage 6 feet from Joe. Got the entire set on a portable cassette. They played most of Alien.
Joe and Tommy are two of my all time faves and Phil Collen is incredible too, but don't forget the greatness of Stu Hamm, even though you don't see his "epic-ness here" all that much.
Saw these three back in 88 at a bowling alley called the Ranch Bowl in Omaha NE. Stuart Hamm played the Charlie Brown theme on bass. Joe had long hair. Maybe a hundred people are in attendance. Brilliant show.
Because of BB KING n STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN I play the Blues them two are No 1 in my heart i grew up listening to them in NEW ZEALAND thank you USA Peace n love for ever
I don't recall ever seeing a guitarist have as much fun as Tommy does when playing. He simply exudes joy every time I see him play.

He did not buy a guitar to punish his ma. Anger does fuel the expression of a lot of guitarists, but not Tommy.

Stu is incredible both in his performance and how calm he all takes, the rock in the river ...
Sheesh Tommy! Haven't seen this side of you before!! Incredible gift you have my friend!!
Gotta be one of the best versions of Johnny B Goode I've ever heard.......stunning and totally outstanding skills from all of them!
Saw these three back in 88 at a bowling alley called the Ranch Bowl in Omaha NE. Stuart Hamm played the Charlie Brown theme on bass. Joe had long hair. Maybe a hundred people are in attendance. Brilliant show.
The first song is "Stevie's Blues" written by Tommy Emmanuel. He wrote it the same day he heard Stevie Ray Vaughn had died.
Yep, the first phrase he plays resembles a lot the beginning of "Scuttlebuttin' " by SRV. :)
SRV forever

They are saying "Stu, Stu" for Stu Hamm.

So true, like everybody has throw in their "expert" opinion. Why can't they just be quiet and listen to the music.
