I'm going to be making my own jeans from Japanese selvedge denim. I'm new to sewing but have made a tester jean with a cheap cotton and have had some good , positive feedback. I'll be making a couple more pairs with some light weight denim until I am confident enough to tackle the Japanese selvedge . I'd be interested if anyone else is making their own. It is recommended to wash your fabric before sewing to get the right fit. Cheers from Australia.
I make my own jeans as well. Happy to share some resources and techniques if you're interested. I'd start with a channel by Paul Kruize. He has two videos of him sewing a pair of jeans. They're not how to videos but I picked up a few techniques that were game changers. The method he uses for flat felled seams is ingenious.

The only thing that you don't mentioned is the widespread story about the first soak after six months of wear. As it seems you soak your jeans before the first wear what I've never done until now, but I'll definitly try in the future. Right now I'm breaking in a Naked & Famous Fire Monkey New Year edition, because it's a super skinny fit. I'm planning to buy an Iron Heart 21 for my next projekt, because I think the 21oz' can be worn without 'pain', the 25oz' I tryed was too heavy, stiff and uncomfortable for my taste.
zumdidum hey man. After the six months you're not really looking at a soak, you should be looking to do a proper wash. Either in the bathtub or the machine. For simplicity sake I always just do the machine wash. Inside out, at 30 - 40 degrees, gentle wash cycle and some kinda detergent for dark clothing. Then hang dry. I never quite understood the hype of soaking jeans. If you're going to get them wet on purpose, may as well wash them with soak.
I do that in a rather similar way. But what I meat is the advice a lot of companies like Nudie or Naked and Fomous give to their customers: wear your jeans for at least six months before washing. :-D
Hey Matt, thank you for your videos! two questions: 1) Is there any reason to not soak while the jeans are turned inside out? 2) I'm almost sure this would sound like sacrilege to you, but would you consider covering dye fixing via soaking in salty water? I love my raw selvedge Jeans but I'm not going for sick fades per se, and would want, for at least some of my pair,s to have a more uniform shade.

I turn my jeans inside out every time and they turn out fine. It would help keep the color uniform for sure. I would imagine the salt would help with that as well. Try a bunch of different methods and see what you like!

Question for anyone: I have bigger legs. Normally wear a 34. Recently bought some Freenote Cloth Wilkes. Had to size up to 35 to get them to fit in the store. Wore them around the house and after a day they’re stretched out now like 36… they’re not longer jeans and now they’re baggy pants. Would soaking these help resize them smaller to fit better? Is this wise or what? Maybe I need 34 and to just bare with not being able to move or sit well in them for a few days. It’s so hard to side raw denim for any one who’s remotely athletic in the lower half. Greatful for any advice.
Hey, do you still recommend soaking “one wash denim”? … also I have really big thighs and I’ve noticed that when wearing sanforized denim, it still shrink a bit when I wash it in cold water.. any tips to reduce shrinking?
All fabric will shrink up a bit when washed. The yarns twist back up a little. In general, sanforisiere denim will shrink around 3% which ain’t a lot and it’ll stretch back out with wear.
Did that as well to my 21oz Samurais. Turned 'em inside-out (as recommended by Samurai), and soaked for 1 hour in a ~36°C. Soaking did it's job, denim shrunk well.
I completely agree that stuff they put on the jean in the cloth stage has to come off. I just don’t think that a soak is going to do it all. I turn new, straight out of the unwrapping, inside out in the washing machine the day I get them. My thinking is what ever indigo is lost is lost evenly right at the start. After that they can fade away without the effect of washing for a long time - baring an accident even two years if hung out to air often.
@@Joshuajames310 Josh depends if the jeans feel almost like I could have them on as is when they arrive then just cold water no soap of any kind. If they feel like the have sizing on them or tones of dye that is ready to come off. Then maybe a sock in cold water and woolit for a few hours then a cold water wash inside out in the machine no soap. In all cases inside out
Hey, can you talk about sizing and shrinkage? Because this is gonna be affected by the soaking. I have GUSTIN 13oz from CONE MILLS, its too big for me by 1" so I soak it. It shrink 1" in waist, inseam and leg opening.
I’m seriously contemplating purchasing a $$$ raw unsanforized Jean jacket Evidently according to the manufacturer the chest will shrink 5cm’s and the sleeves 1-1.5 cm’s. A large will fit me perfectly IF I NEVER WASH IT. An extra-large with - shrinkage - factored in will fit will be near perfect as well (after shrinking). My question is will the denim stretch back to original size? In which case I’d choose a Large and shrink and then re-stretch it. -OR should I go up a size shrink it and have it hopefully fit in it’s shrunken shape. Does raw demin stretch completely back to its original dimensions? Any help would be appreciated.
Hi I've got some lee 101 selvedge denim jeans I've only dry cleaned the jeans as that's what the label says I'm assuming it isn't as good as washing them as there is some dirt not but I can see it and wondering if it would come out with a rinse or wash but kinda afraid as don't want to ruin them
Hi Cee Are Dee!! I just got my first pairs of Bravestar Selvedge denim jeans. One black Cone Mills 12 oz, and a 14 oz Iro Japanese Selvedge Denim. One of the pairs is a 30 and the other is a 31. I'm right in between the sizes and was hoping to stretch out the 30's a bit, and hopefully shrink up the 31's a tiny bit at the waist and thigh as well. How would the first soak affect the new jeans' sizes? And if i'm trying to shrink one and keep one without shrinkage, would I do anything differently during the first soak?

Yeah, absolutely. This actually makes it easier for both the brands, the stores and the customer in the long run. It makes it less of a gamble when it comes to sizing. But a lot of people, the hardcore denimheads that is, love the shrink to fit process. I have my eye on a pair of one was TCB's and I am really curious how these will fade in/fit and wear. I will of course keep you updated.
@@CeeAreDee Good to know, commenter and Matt :D I now know that my one wash black Momotaros actually do NOT need the soak. I did soak a pair of Rufskin stretch... It bled a lot of indigo before (had it on like three times), I mean not a lot but definitely stayed on my fingers. When I was hanging it up to dry, it still bled but it seems they're okay. I'll use the water I was gonna soak the Momos in for washing another pair lol. Where's that video...
Not at all. It’s a very good question without an easy answer. A good general rule is that unless it specifically states unsanforized then there is a good chance it’s sanforised. The thing with unsanforized denim is that is is quite rare and not really for anyone outside the denim heads circle. So when a pair are unsanforized the info is usually part of the marketing around it.
Hi Cee are Dee! Love your content!!! Have you had any experience with "Red Tornado" selvedge jeans? I got a 17oz pair modeled after the SD-107's and they absolutely crush my unbranded 101's as far as construction.
Hey man, easy answer. Never. the initial soak is to get out any starch or other chemicals int he denim from the weaving process. The wash would be to get out the dirt and muck. Simply soaking the jeans with no soap wont really do any good at all so there is little point. In my experience this will just make them foosty.

Too late or impossible for me to soak since I've been wearing it for quite a row and no bath tub whatsoever lying around, but not the first wash hopefully. For I only recently got some raw. Hope the chemical won't get to me though. But the light coloured sofa is having its fair share of some indigo. Thanks for the education.
Not tried the water and vinegar thing... I hate the smell of Vinegar so never wanted to do it. Thomas from Denimhunters said it works tho. If you really don;t want any bleeding the only way to really prevent it is a run in the washing machine. Inside out at about 30 degrees, gentle wash.
Nice video mate. I'm new to this raw denim stuff and just bought a pair of naked n famous real gold selvedge jeans. I believe there not unsanforized and thought I could just start wearing them. Would your advice be to do this soak to them anyway?
I routinely do a soak, it just reduced any of the chemicals/starch that were used in the manufacturing. Amongst my denimhead friends and I, we believe that this will make the threads a little less brittle and lead to longer lasting jeans.
Can you soak in a bucket instead of a bathtub? I have a lot of people in house who use bathtub so me leaving jeans in there will not be popular) Also I assume you do this with denim shirts as well but how would you hang a shirt vs the jeans?

Hmm, that is a tough one. I wouldn't want to tell you to shrink them down in the washing machine or tumble dryer. I think this would be quite unpredictable. Having said that. I did that with my Red Clouds and they turned out perfect. It is a gamble though.
CeeAreDee / Rope Dye any tips to gamble better ? I have a new sanforized IH634 in size 30 in sight for a bargain but i wouldn’t mind shrinking it. Does soaking in hot water would do the trick or is a dryer mandatory to really achieve a good inch of shrinking ?
Guillaume Leroux Maybe try soaking in warm water, then hang dry, and before they competition dry, wear them. They will shrink a little to fit better. Maybe soak with cold water if you’re concerned with over-shrinking
Cult Boy yep, i did that and they fit perfectly now. The guys at IH said it’s not an exact science and results may vary but i confirm you can shrink sanforized jeans a little without f***ing up the indigo. 👍🏻

Have your jeans sun bath inside out, the UV light will kill the bacteria & viruses. I leave my jeans sunbathing around 4 hours after spraying them with baking soda solution.
My understanding is that pre-soaking lessens the denims drastic fades but does add longevity to the garment. That's why all the denim heads have crotch blow out; they're not soakers; they're tokers. I think the lack of indigo in your test says nothing as you well know that the indigo needs to be removed by friction as the garment has already gone the finishing phase in production. Should you have agitated the jean in the water you would have had a lot more indigo bleed into the water. Never trust a dude that wears sun glasses in his house.
Pre-soaking won't make much of a difference when it comes to fading potential... there are too many other factors at play for this to really be a factor on dramatic fading. But you're right, it does add to the longevity of the jeans... crotch blowouts are inevitable, however, if you have a look at the last few videos, you will see that my jeans are headed for repair for just this reason and they got a soak right at the start. The crotch is just the place that sees the most friction.
People a thousand years from now will study this video in horror and disgust that a bath tub a quarter full of water was wasted to soak some jeans for an hour whilst they have to purify their own liquid waste to get a drink of h20.
haha, its a good solution to a tricky bathroom shape... thing is, it is from the late 90s and needing replaced along with the rest of the bathroom... hope I can find a more modern equivalent.
Keen to do this on my next pair to avoid another blowout - one question - there can’t be any harm in using a hairdryer on a medium heat a few times to help the jeans dry is there? My flat is always the warmest or best ventilated in the bathroom, so think they may need some help. Advice?
Hey man. Not meaning to be pedantic about this just filling you in. Sanforization is the process where you get the shrink out of fabrics, so pre-sanforized denim would actually be unsanforized denim. I always do a soak with any denims just to get the nasty chemicals left over from the weaving and sanforization process out of the fabric.

Hi there, recently I bought a new pair of N&F Weird Guy 12.5 Natural Indigo Selvedge. It fit's me pretty tight in waist and a couple inches longer with no cuff. I wear them for a few days a week for a month. Now I'm looking to shrink them but still worry about loosing too much in sizing. Your recommendation? Great channel btw!
Damn, that is a nice pair of jeans! Amazing denim!!! I could not find much info on whether or not they are sanforized... Hmm, I would not like to hazard a guess. Might be good to send them a mail and see what they say before diving in. For the waist, in my experience whatever the waist shrinkage is, they denim stretches out after a couple of days wear to what it was before. For the length, sounds ike you could spare a little los in length but 2 inches isnt a lot. Haha, not being a load of help here. Sorry. Tell you what. Write them and see if they are sanforized and let me know. We can take it from there.
Oh, one more thing... maybe an odd question. do you have any issue with the small? I have a few pieces that are natural indigo. And they have a very specific musk. Nothing too offensive but it does tend to get a little anti-social meaning the jeans tend to get a load more washes than my synthetic ones.
I did the initial soak on my momotaro 15.7oz tight tapers after having worn them about 2 days, after the soak they really softened up and idk why but they felt more textured than before, is this normal?
Totally normal, all the starch and other chemicals were (mostly) removed and the cotton had a chance to hydrate and tighten up a little. Think of it like a really greased down hairstyle and then after a good wash and good conditioner , the hair can be a little more free, a little more wavy and much healthier. Looks better, feels better and you don't run the risk of looking like Ross from friends cira 2001... but in a denim way ;)
Trey Greenleaf Mine were a sanforized pair and also quite tight to start with. I went for a cold soak anyway, after the soak I felt like the fabric had a lot more give and stretch to it. So if they’re tight fitted now, don’t worry about it and go ahead and give it a soak anyway, the fabric really soften ups and makes it a lot more wearable.

Hey Stefan... Hmm that is a tricky one and I know you are not alone with this issue. Soaking in the sink I cannot recommend because the jeans will not shrink down evenly. Although I know a couple of guys who are fine with doing this I would be reluctant. Maybe you have a buddy with a tub? You only have to do it once

Nothing bad will happen to them. Make sure they are sanforized however. Otherwise you may find that they shrink up. But better to find out now than in 6 months after the first wash.
I have a pair on right now that were machine washed in cold water inside out. They are great! - trust Master Cee Are Dee “Nothing bad will happen to them”

If you're like me and like to soak jeans in boiling water to shrink them, use a little white vinegar to prevent color loss. Seems to help.

It bled a lot of indigo before (had it on like three times), I mean not a lot but definitely stayed on my fingers. When I was hanging it up to dry, it still bled but it seems they're okay. How do I find out if my jeans are Sanforized or unsanforized ? Sorry if this is a stupid question
Not at all. It’s a very good question without an easy answer. A good general rule is that unless it specifically states unsanforized then there is a good chance it’s sanforised. The thing with unsanforized denim is that is is quite rare and not really for anyone outside the denim heads circle. So when a pair are unsanforized the info is usually part of the marketing around it.

Why can't you put the jeans in the washinf machine for a spin cycle after this first soak?
One question that I find that rarely gets answered. Is how often or when should I soak my jeans in between washes?
Hey man, easy answer. Never. the initial soak is to get out any starch or other chemicals int he denim from the weaving process. The wash would be to get out the dirt and muck. Simply soaking the jeans with no soap wont really do any good at all so there is little point. In my experience this will just make them foosty.
What did these jeans look like after they dried? Did they look the same as pre-soak? What was the texture like, just as stiff?

Too late or impossible for me to soak since I've been wearing it for quite a row and no bath tub whatsoever lying around, but not the first wash hopefully. For I only recently got some raw. Hope the chemical won't get to me though. But the light coloured sofa is having its fair share of some indigo. Thanks for the education.

How much does this prevent bleeding compared to cold water with vinegar? I’ve heard both and I just don’t like the dye bleeding.
Not tried the water and vinegar thing... I hate the smell of Vinegar so never wanted to do it. Thomas from Denimhunters said it works tho. If you really don;t want any bleeding the only way to really prevent it is a run in the washing machine. Inside out at about 30 degrees, gentle wash.

If they are one washed then you are good to go. No need to soak them.

Hmm. That’s a good question. Can’t be too cold otherwise they won’t dry properly. Just a guess. Over 10 degrees maybe with a good fresh breeze.

Hmm, this is a tricky one. Do you have a buddy with a tub? I would avoid putting them in the sink folded up.

Nice video mate. I'm new to this raw denim stuff and just bought a pair of naked n famous real gold selvedge jeans. I believe there not unsanforized and thought I could just start wearing them. Would your advice be to do this soak to them anyway?
I routinely do a soak, it just reduced any of the chemicals/starch that were used in the manufacturing. Amongst my denimhead friends and I, we believe that this will make the threads a little less brittle and lead to longer lasting jeans.

Hmm, that is a tough one. I wouldn't want to tell you to shrink them down in the washing machine or tumble dryer. I think this would be quite unpredictable. Having said that. I did that with my Red Clouds and they turned out perfect. It is a gamble though.
CeeAreDee / Rope Dye any tips to gamble better ? I have a new sanforized IH634 in size 30 in sight for a bargain but i wouldn’t mind shrinking it. Does soaking in hot water would do the trick or is a dryer mandatory to really achieve a good inch of shrinking ?
Guillaume Leroux Maybe try soaking in warm water, then hang dry, and before they competition dry, wear them. They will shrink a little to fit better. Maybe soak with cold water if you’re concerned with over-shrinking
Cult Boy yep, i did that and they fit perfectly now. The guys at IH said it’s not an exact science and results may vary but i confirm you can shrink sanforized jeans a little without f***ing up the indigo. 👍🏻

Have your jeans sun bath inside out, the UV light will kill the bacteria & viruses. I leave my jeans sunbathing around 4 hours after spraying them with baking soda solution.
All benzak’s pre soaked?
All Benzak’s are made from sanforized denim, meaning there’s little to no shrink even without the soak.
My understanding is that pre-soaking lessens the denims drastic fades but does add longevity to the garment. That's why all the denim heads have crotch blow out; they're not soakers; they're tokers. I think the lack of indigo in your test says nothing as you well know that the indigo needs to be removed by friction as the garment has already gone the finishing phase in production. Should you have agitated the jean in the water you would have had a lot more indigo bleed into the water. Never trust a dude that wears sun glasses in his house.
Pre-soaking won't make much of a difference when it comes to fading potential... there are too many other factors at play for this to really be a factor on dramatic fading. But you're right, it does add to the longevity of the jeans... crotch blowouts are inevitable, however, if you have a look at the last few videos, you will see that my jeans are headed for repair for just this reason and they got a soak right at the start. The crotch is just the place that sees the most friction.
People a thousand years from now will study this video in horror and disgust that a bath tub a quarter full of water was wasted to soak some jeans for an hour whilst they have to purify their own liquid waste to get a drink of h20.

Hey man. Not meaning to be pedantic about this just filling you in. Sanforization is the process where you get the shrink out of fabrics, so pre-sanforized denim would actually be unsanforized denim. I always do a soak with any denims just to get the nasty chemicals left over from the weaving and sanforization process out of the fabric.

Hi there, recently I bought a new pair of N&F Weird Guy 12.5 Natural Indigo Selvedge. It fit's me pretty tight in waist and a couple inches longer with no cuff. I wear them for a few days a week for a month. Now I'm looking to shrink them but still worry about loosing too much in sizing. Your recommendation? Great channel btw!
Damn, that is a nice pair of jeans! Amazing denim!!! I could not find much info on whether or not they are sanforized... Hmm, I would not like to hazard a guess. Might be good to send them a mail and see what they say before diving in. For the waist, in my experience whatever the waist shrinkage is, they denim stretches out after a couple of days wear to what it was before. For the length, sounds ike you could spare a little los in length but 2 inches isnt a lot.

Oh, one more thing... maybe an odd question. do you have any issue with the small? I have a few pieces that are natural indigo. And they have a very specific musk. Nothing too offensive but it does tend to get a little anti-social meaning the jeans tend to get a load more washes than my synthetic ones.

I did the initial soak on my momotaro 15.7oz tight tapers after having worn them about 2 days, after the soak they really softened up and idk why but they felt more textured than before, is this normal?
Totally normal, all the starch and other chemicals were (mostly) removed and the cotton had a chance to hydrate and tighten up a little. Think of it like a really greased down hairstyle and then after a good wash and good conditioner , the hair can be a little more free, a little more wavy and much healthier. Looks better, feels better and you don't run the risk of looking like Ross from friends cira 2001... but in a denim way ;)

Trey Greenleaf Mine were a sanforized pair and also quite tight to start with. I went for a cold soak anyway, after the soak I felt like the fabric had a lot more give and stretch to it. So if they’re tight fitted now, don’t worry about it and go ahead and give it a soak anyway, the fabric really soften ups and makes it a lot more wearable.

Hey Stefan... Hmm that is a tricky one and I know you are not alone with this issue. Soaking in the sink I cannot recommend because the jeans will not shrink down evenly. Although I know a couple of guys who are fine with doing this I would be reluctant. Maybe you have a buddy with a tub? You only have to do it once

Nothing bad will happen to them. Make sure they are sanforized however. Otherwise you may find that they shrink up. But better to find out now than in 6 months after the first wash.
