Is UNIQLO SELVEDGE Denim Any Good?

- Right from the start of this channel I’ve been asked what I thought of Uniqlo selvedge denim. And the answer was always the same. I don't know. I’ve never taken a closer look. We’re going to change that today.

Had the slim-fit Kaihara model. Super crispy. Wore them to shreds with minimal washing.
Had to retire them after 5 years. By this time, it had already transformed into a Heddels-worthy piece, with fantastic honeycombs and whiskerings.
5 years is a good life for a pair of jeans.
These are kaihara too, every uniqlo selvage are. Certainly made in China kaihara but still.
I got my first SELVEDGE denim from Uniqlo i have never experinced something like that from a jeans in my life oh God i love it.
I buy a pair every two years or so. They are so legit and fade perfectly and the stretch is incredibly comfortable. They were my gateway drug into the good stuff, but I always keep these in the rotation. In a pinch, I can get a new pair for a nice event for the brand new dark look and then enjoy breaking them in all season again. Most importantly, they FIT better than any expensive pair I have ever tried.
How long do they last on Occasional wear like once a week?
@@jeevan88888 a life time
@@jeevan88888if you brush them off and store them well after every wear I assume they will last as long as you care for them
How is the bleeding? Will it fuck up my white shoes and lighter cream/beige sweaters?
@@LumoSkendo595I also would like to know this
I bought a pair of these to serve as a crisp smart dark indigo jeans. I don't know better and I'm really quite happy with them.
These were my gateway drug into selvedge denim. I wear them all the time. Super comfy.
How's the quality and durability been over time? I had a pair of the stretch selvedge that wore out really quick and since then I've been a little hesitant to try out a different pair (and hopefully one that'll also fit me a bit better)
@@shauryakadiyala1171 Mine are still holding up really well! But I don't wear them as regularly as I did when I got them. So tough to say how durable they'll be.... sorry.
Here after I just secure one for 19.90 aud. My first ever pair of slevage denim jeans. Excited to see how it goes...
I just picked up a Uniqlo x pure blue Japan collab chore jacket off Grailed for 22$ and it’s absolutely fire ! Well made the cut is impeccable and the denim is solid . And I own over 30 premium denim jackets and coats
Hello from Canada. Wonderful review. I’m shocked, too. And, I’m jealous of your life in Berlin.
There pretty good I’ve had them for about a year and they held up well, little to no color degration, and look better with time. Love them
Thanks for validating my purchase. I know nothing about the selvedge world but these have been my goto jeans for a few years. Side note some of their selvedge jeans do have rivets they aren’t necessary but they exist.
Thorough analysis of a good value in denim. Like many others, this was my gateway into raw denim. I still think they are very good "entry level" jeans. As you said, they lack some of the fine details that a more prestige brand would offer: rivets, nice pocket bags, embossed iron buttons, etc... But at that price, you can't beat them.
Exactly. It’s an incredible price for very good jeans. And a very accessible gateway. More than Edwin or nudie.
I’m so pleased you’ve reviewed these jeans. 😁 I own three pairs and I think they’re great. At least on par with my Unbranded jeans. 👍
Unbranded?! I’m breaking in these relax taper 30x32s. Wondering how the Uniqlo fits are
I just got my pair of jeans from Uniqlo and they have rivets! These are my first selvedge jeans and I’m stoked! Uniqlo will even hem the inseam to your desired length for an extra 5 bucks online!
It's hard to beat anything Uniqlo makes when you compare quality vs $.
I dunno. Better than Unbranded? I'm an unbranded simp
Apart from wool. Theyre wool products are garbage
I picked up a pair of Uniqlo selvedge jeans for $40 a couple of weeks ago and very impressed. They are less than half the price of Unbranded (which was my go to before) fit better and seem to have more sturdy construction (pockets don’t rip!). The material is nice but not quite what you’ll find on $150+ jeans. These are going to be my new daily wear though.
I would love to see them create a more expensive version with thicker denim.
You have a Uniqlo in town, geez! These pants are excellent. My pair had rivets.
Just got a pair in the Sale for £12 + £4 postage a fortnight ago, washed them at 30 degrees, and had a small shrinkage, they fit ace now..very pleased with these.I must wash jeans after wearing for a week,as public transport, pub seats etc make them dirty, not to mention riding motorcycles.
In the store near me, they do free alterations on all trousers, so you buy longer and then they hem them to the length you want for free (gets rid of the pre crease). So a tailored pair of selvedge jeans for under £40...it's a bargain.
Too bad these seem to be online only in the US
I have had mine for 7 years. Fantastic jeans.
Would like to mention that these go on sale sometimes too so the value is even more insane! I think its an incredible wardrobe staple that has tons of longevity since I’ve seen some pairs age very well after a few years.
yep, 50% off with free shippping, total of $30CAD
nice review! you should try the mainline uniqlo selvedge denim (regular or stretch slim cut) since they had various lengths (30,32,34), rivets in front pocket and kaihara denim fabric. really a bang for your buck, and they often go on sale
Yeah. They seemed to be sold out of the regular denim at the store I went to. And the stretch slim fit isn’t my thing. Too old and dad bod for that.
ahh... that explain the reason why mine have rivets. i was soo confused when he mentioned that his denim doesn't have rivets on it.
Got one of those with stretch, been using it for 7 years, about 4 years constant use. faded fine, no blowouts.
The stretch does help The longevity.
Nudies were also my first pair back in 03 besides Levi’s and I’ve been through a lot of pairs and a lot of different companies since then. I liked the uniqlos for their pricing and cut when I first found them in 15? And have always had a fresh new pair in the closet in case I need them. The pricing is unbeatable considering the quality and I’d opt for these over the gaps offerings in the lower price points myself.
I got the slim stretch they have a branded button, pockets, rivets, kaihara mills denim and selvedge i.d. in the coin pocket all for 40 quid.
Damn It!
Have loved Uniqlo’s Selvedge for years…and now, courtesy of your video, the secret is out!
I ordered a pair of Uniqlo slim stretch selvage w/ hemming. Mine came w/ rivets on the front pockets though. I was surprised how great they were! I only have experience w, $60 Levi’s, Wranglers, Everlane, and Naked & Famous stretch 12oz. The Uniqlo is by far the best fit and best hand of the jeans that I have tried. I’m done exploring $160 brands! Available in indigo and black, I’d love if they were available in light wash, and grey. Maybe the indigo and black will fade to light wash and grey over the course of a few yrs, IDK. A lot of Uniqlo is not that great IMO but these jeans, OCBD’s, Linen shirts, merino wool, and socks and heavy weight Tees are excellent basics that don’t disappoint.
Yeah, they seem to do some great stuff. It really is the shopping experience that kills it for me. But maybe I'll explore the basics more however.
I've had a pair of these since 2016-17, and they still look and fit great 👍.
I got a pair to be honest with you I wear them more then my other pairs of denim
Have 4 pairs of slim with elastine. Kaihara denim. Wore the hell out of them, still my favourite pants and I paid even less, around 30 euro per pair. I have 15-20 other denim, 3sixteen, edwins, nudies, unbranded, samurai etc, many are heavier but as for comfort and fit uniqlos are great. They faded beautifully and had zero quality problems. Arguably one doesnt need any other expensive brands unless you want heavier stuff.
They are great, I use them & have been good for 2 years now !! Def an entry level especially if Kaihara finished the fabric!
I got one pair of these last week and they do have rivets now, what I was extremely disappointed of see missing is the leather patch ;;
These have pretty much become my favourite jeans and I have some quite expensive Atelier La Durances, Carhartt's and Edwins etc.
I'm very tall (202cm) and the 36 length of these (off the website) are the longest. I can double cuff them and show no ankle.
The denim is starting to honeycomb and taking form nicely now aswell.
They're amazing.
Found this - Many of our jeans, including our selvedge denim, are made by Kaihara, a denim manufacturer in Hiroshima, who we have been in partnership with since 1998. Established in 1893, Kaihara is Japan's top denim manufacture
Some uniqlo selvedge denim the fabric uses kaihara denim. I think those were the stretch selvedge
Wow i love the look of them. Fact they are so simple in design and lack of rivets makes it look different than other stuff and super clean and minimalistic. I didn't expect design with so much character. Im saving for my first pare of salvage and looking at 22oz unbranded ones but this is really strong contender. Untill now i had only raw or unaged jeans that i enjoy a lot of fades from
21oz*
Sehr schöner Ersteindruck. Schon oft gehört das die Qualität gut sein soll, aber es hat mich dennoch immer etwas abgeschreckt. Ich glaube ich werde Uniqlo mal besuchen um mir die Sachen anzugucken 👌
Just got a pair of these out of curiosity after watching this video, really impressed! Also would love to see a review/styling video on the 3Sixteen X Schott Type 3 at some point, my god thats a nice jacket...
I was going to do a review on it but it sold out in about 6 hours 😳. Always felt a little mean making a video about a jacket folks can’t buy.
Yeah that is fair! Minimise the torture 😂. The Iron Heart split steer type 3 is a good alternative though! My eyes are firmly fixed on that 👀
I got one when i was living in Kanagawa and then eventually got the D’artisans
I got some insight why these jeans are so well made.
It is part of the Uniqlo U collection. On this collection Uniqlo worked together with ex-Hermes designer Christopher Lemaire.
Explains that 100% on point fit also.
The slim fit ones fit me so well as I am very thin. My Studio D’Artisans don’t fit me nearly as well. The Uniqlo ones also start to look a bit waxy after you don’t wash them for a while lol which is really cool and makes them look like old Dior Hedi Slimane jeans.
I second the waxy part when you don’t wash them. I got my 5th pair in 2.5 years yesterday and god. I love these more than my saint Laurent d02s. I’ll be honest because I can beat these the fuck up and I wear them every. Single. Day
Glad I came back to this video im washing mine first time rn
13:00 There is a different pair on the homepage with rivets🤔 and brand on the zipfly-button. And the label is black not white.
And the colour of the constrast-stitching is different too, it has 2 colours like Levis.
I think the Uniqlo U line is a really paired back version of classics. I didn’t see the “regular “ selvedge “ at the store I went to. Just the stretch and I didn’t look too close at that.
It’s Kaihara denim. One of the originals from Japan and used in many other jeans .
I wonder how the jeans that you reviewed compare to what is currently available on their website.
There are rivets in the "classic" uniqlo selvedge but not on the Uniqlo U models.
I have own a pair Uniqlo selvedge jeans since 2018 and still have them and just have some points to the jeans.
1.I know that the normal pair of Uniqlo selvedge denim comes with rivets on them
2. If you live in a city with a Uniqlo store you can get your jeans altered for free on all jeans over 20€ also if you have brought them online
3. Uniqlo works with Kaihara denim to make all there selvedge jeans
4. Value for money the Uniqlo selvedge jeans is the best buy I have had mine for 4 year and there still hold up
I didn’t know about the alterations. That’s really interesting.
If the only 'big' nitpick he seems to have has to do with stuff outside of the actual jeans, then clearly these have earned their place as a good buy. I have the Kaihara straight leg from the Tokyo Ginza store. It's got rivets and they definitely wear and feel as good as the more expensive japanese jeans I own from Pure Blue Japan. It'll be a sad day when I finally wear through them in like 3-5 years.
I keep buying this one pair every time, been sold in UNIQLO for years. Also wear a pair of handmade raw Japanese made I got in Tokyo, still I don’t wear them as much as the Uniqlo ones. Also, no rivets means no scratches on my motorbike
I've own a few Uniqlo Selvedge before they became Mainstream Conglomerate and the quality has changed over the years but still one of the best value Selvedge especially on sale/clearance.
I’ve beat the piss out of my Uniqlo selvedge and the only thing that ever failed was one rivet popped on the pocket but I collected both pieces slipped them back together and hammered it flat and it’s been holding ever since! I wore them as daily drivers in the trades
They must look sick by now!
These are great! I have some 2+ old faded pairs and the distressing is beautiful!
lol I shouted no hidden rivets! when you did the back pocket review, for sure gonna recommend these for on the fence about buying some selvedge
Gonna have to pick up a pair if they ever restock
ive worn a few premium japanese denim brands and popular hi fashion brands. but i now only buy uniqlo. mostly because i dont have as much disposable income as i had when i was younger :P. but they really are good value. no fuss. good fit. can buy a pair within a 15 min drive from home.
This is my first time hearing a lot of this information. Nobody really bothered explaining it this thoroughly.
Well, the Nudie similarity could be because Uniqlo's indigo69 colour is a kaihara selvedge.
About the lack of rivets.
I find them more trouser-like without them and makes them better for the modern smart casual work place.
I have the slim fit version with stretch. They have rivets on the pockets. Fit wise, I would compare them to Levis 512's. As far as the quality goes....they're actually better.
I got these when they first started doing them in 2019. One of my favourite pairs just based on how much value they provide for the cost.
I think they "restarted" doing them in 2019? I don't know, but I bought my pair when I lived in Korea around 2013 or 2014. And they did stop making them a year or two after I bought mine from what I understand
@@Stan_sprinkle I had a pair with buttons and rivets back in 2008
My first pair of selvedge. For the money you can’t beat them. Sometimes they go on sale for $40. I really like the fit but I think my pair (2019 or so) were not sanforized as they shrank quite a bit when I washed them. They also had brand embossed button and rivets.
They shrink far too much
I got a pair for $10 on sale. I love wearing them.
Their old selvedge was even better, used to be 100% cotton. Plus you could get it in a skinny cut as well. These newer ones with stretch are not bad either as they age nicely, but there’s something about a nice pair of 100% cotton jeans.
they have both.
These are 100% cotton
Unfortunately they only do slim fit stretch in the UK, not the straight fit. I have a pair coming in, just hope they fit. I'm also going to buy a pair of Hebtroco gvnrs which are 4 times the price 😂
Love that jumper youre wearing.where is that from?
That’s a cardigan and it’s from 3 sixteen. 😊 amazing piece.
I tried wearing a pair in once and developed a rash on my shin. Ive been through many pairs of denim never experience anything like it.
Are these seasonal models? Right now, none of the Uniqlo stores have anything that's non-stretch and regular fit.
I'm on my 5th or 6th pair of Uniqlo Selvedge, best jeans on the market. No need to spend hundreds.
If you got chance, find the green selvadge edition. Known as earliest model. Its made from 100% cotton and much better from the latest
The stretch selvedge fit me so great.
I tried the Helmut Lang collab pair and straight cut selvedge pair but both of them made me look weird.
Im new to this raw denim jeans things. Frankly I just want the dark navy color and I dont want to be bothered with breaking them in or worrying about anything. I wanted to know how is the bleeding from these jeans? I really cba to invest my time into them not bleeding and washing with vinegar and stuff. Will they still bleed if i dont do that? And also can you recommend a brand with pre wash denim that would not bleed but still have kind of similiar dark navy color?
Picked up some of these for £14 in a sale the other week. Was too good to pass up on.
You should check the new Jeans from Uniqlo U collection 2023 they have a low % of hemp
i was in japan this past june, 6/2024. the selvedge straight fit was $25. i cant imagine a brand beating that price
I am thinking about getting into Selvedge Denim and consider these to start.
How often can/should you wash them?
Turn them inside out and give them a 30degree was straight away. Then after that, as much as you need to. My rule is 6 months no wash. Then every month or so.
Solid video, i will be grabbing a pair of these to add to my collection.
Did you talk about sizing or did I just miss the part? I’m ordering at least one pair! Thanks!
Uniqlo selvedge jeans fits me the best of all my selvedge jeans. I always have a couple.
I have the stretch slim fit selvedge jeans, and they do have rivets around the front pockets, weird that it is different on the fits.
Not sure if you will see this and reply, i went to a uniqlo store and tried a size 33 on and fits me perfectly, comfortable and roomy like i wanted. But i'm afraid of the first soak shrink. Have you done a soak with them? Do they shrink?
I’ve not done a shrink yet but I’ve heard they loose a little in the length. If you loose much in the waist then it should stretch back out again. If it goes down by more than a size then I think you’re in your rights to swap them out. This is a big brand and things like shrink should not really factor in at this level.
Not to mention you can actually walk into the store and buy them. There’s a solid level of availability for these vs like every other brand that’s basically always sold out.
Great video! I liked the review but i feel like some background music would help. Good review though!
Yeah? Always find that distracting on other videos.
Is this thick and stiff or thin strech ? I use levis 511 slim nonstrech size 33 ..what size for this uniqlo?
what wrist watch are you wearing ? Looks great
I bought a pair just a few days ago, after being influenced by this video. I noticed that there are some differences in mine - they have rivets, and don't have the reinforcements for the belts. Subtle updates or because I'm from Japan and maybe we have different designs here...? (Not so likely to be the case though but who knows) Anyways, thanks for the wonderful videos, I love watching them :)
I also have some of Uniqlo U selvedge denim jeans as well n good quality with reasonable price for me in Cambodia ❤❤❤... Quality is the best price range of Uniqlo uuuu😊🎉🎉🎉.. i bought second hand in Phnom Penh Cambodia about 5$ or 7.5$ of pink selvedge denim jeans 👖❤❤❤
Nice review.
Greetings from Tokyo 🇯🇵
Uniqlo are a great deal, that’s a fact. I really like your cloth tote bag where did you get it ?
My size at levi’s 502 denim 30/32. İ want order uniglo Selvedge regular. What size should i order?
The fabric is supposed to be woven by Kaihara Mills! Explains a lot
Nice review. However this pair of jeans you have in the video is from the U collection designed by Christopher Lemaire, hence the contemporary fit and rivet-less design. They also have another basic line selvedge jeans which is basically a replicate of the 501 1947 with the straight-and-a-bit-slim fit, also with rivets and other details.
I'm normally a 30 length without a cuff. Should I be getting 32 too or 34? They are out of 30s anyway. Is the waist similar to your Levis size? The ones online I found have rivets. They aren't raw are they?
It’s a shame that they don’t have any length options in this model
They're great but they don't fade very nicely
You need to start wearing these. They went on the one day pile. Maybe now it’s summer.
@@CeeAreDee I've got a pair. They are very nice quality for the price!
Tried to order some of these the other day. Website wanted me to create an account… ok, annoying but not the end of the world. While doing that I find that they only offer addresses in Australia… so I guess no UNIQLO for me in the US
I have a pair. I love them.
What jacket are you wearing?
3sixteen x Schott NYC" Cowhide Type-3 Leather Jacket in Copper Rough-Out
I just bought a pair of selvedge denim from Uniqlo, theyre Uniqlo jeans, not Uniqlo U, and the details are much better, they have rivets and selvedge line in pocket coin.
I just got the 60 dollar straight leg selvedge denim from Uniqlo and I love the fit. If any one can point me in the direction of more expensive high quality selvedge jeans that have the EXACT same fit as the uniqlo straight legs then please let me know because I’m down to investing in a pair right now
Japanese attention to detail, and pride of craftsmanship. This is why I now only buy Japanese brand clothing, mainly uniqlo.
Hey you should check out Rustler raw denim, they are incredibly cheap in the states.
What I love about these jeans is that some people, like myself, love dark denim, and we like to keep our denim dark. Yes, I'm aware of the various blacked out indigo Japanese denim too. We don't care about aged denim or patterns or honeycombs, yada yada yada. These are also great for people who ride bicycles. They'll wear out faster and then you just get new ones. They won't get ruined in the event of a fall either. Sorry, I know, this isn't sustainable but, heck, the oligarchy fly on private jets and summer on yachts. Let me use jeans the way I want to... or will there be laws against this too?
Another surprising buy are the Stroghold Selvedge that are / were available in Primark, yes Primark of all places for £20.00 a pair! Available in raw unwashed and worn look.
I found the smell of them really bad I get they are cheap but the smell is really unappealing
Horrible fit, saw them and tried on a raw pair, plus disgusting smell, in confides of the changing room, chemical
