Loooooooove Vindication! Sandbox Euro and like Tom, I buy into the theme. I always like to use the Pets as an additional module for those weird creatures!
I love these catchupalooza's. Don't stop dashing these in here and there. Great hearing commentary on a game 2 o4 3 years old (or more). If you guys have missed some of these gems, imagine the average gamer. we have to pick and choose which hotness to spend on and Catchupalooza hit close to home for those of us that may have missed some great games.
Mike made a very valid point that the way the game ends allows for players to explore different paths and do what they want to do. The last KS expansion ONeb did for Chronicles addresses what was most talked about here. Injecting theme and stories to meld with the amazing art, and merge with the great mechanics. We shall see how the designers did in achieving that lofty goal soon.
I got to teach this to Mike along with Chris at the retreat! It was such a fun experience, and the fourth player who joined us - Robin - told me the next morning that he was going to try to obtain a copy!!
And I did! Well, I've placed a late pledge...but I'm counting that. I can't wait to teach it to my game group once it arrives. Thank you so much for the excellent teach and the wonderful gaming experience.
I’m such a huge fan of this game, even though I’ve only played twice. I’m normally more of a thematic guy, but I love highly tactical games, and the puzzle this one turns into depending on what unfolds during the game makes it an absolute gem
This is one of my fav games of all time. Just make sure to use the dice from the leaders exspansion as it balances the monster killing strategy. This game favors people who can adjust and adapt to the tiles flipping over. It’s hard to focus on a strategy from the beginning because you don’t know what tiles will be flipped over. Every game will be different and the better you can adjust to that the better you will do. This games also deceptively easy to learn and play as well.
Vindication is one of the only game that I saw at the FLGS and just brought it without any knowledge. This was Orange Nebula's first game and they do delivered on their games. Which is why I got in on the 2nd Unsettled Kickstarter and looking forward to their new Spirited Fire which will get Kickstarter this year.
Interesting discussion about the sandbox game vs end game triggers - and I agree that the end game triggers allow it to be a sandbox game. Otherwise it’s a race to the end point/score. This design allows players to ‘position’ themselves for victory via multiple paths but always being aware that the game could end early so do not build a long slow strategy, unless you feel you have control over most outcomes.
i wasn't super familiar with this game (never seen it in person and only vaguely remembered the name from videos mentioning it), but found the discussion very interesting. I'm not sure if i'd be into the game, but always enjoy the ones that lead to discussions of proper classification (and especially love it when games can't easily be classified.)
Well if the recent release of Vindication Archive of the Ancients box you now can fit all of the original game along with the many expansions it has. So yes even a bigger box than the original though not in the same color (its mostly white).
This might be my favorite game ever. The BASE game is so elegant and has really solid/good mechanics. Sadly, the expansions just add a lot of NEW mechanics (to the point they just become convoluted) instead of EXPANDING on the existing ones. If you're new to the game, get all expansions and just use the colored cards. Villages & Hamlets might become the only good expansion this game ever gets.
I think chronicles could be good too. But I definitely see it slowing the game down. Maybe it would be good to help introduce people to the game. So that it seems less dry on first play , then remove it for more experienced groups who just want the pure efficiency engine.
I just wish the game was called Redemption. Whoever named it Vindication clearly didn't understand what the word properly means to a native English speaker.
Interestingly, the game was originally called "Epoch: The Awakening" and change it's name to Vindication halfway through the original Kickstarter campaign due to Trademark issues.
This game has fallen alot for pur group ... its started amazing but after 6 or 7 plays its fallen hard ... the theme exists for exactly 1 play and then becomes an efficiency engine euro ... also the expansion IMO are all terrible
I agree. The same could be said about virtually everything. The Last of Us 2 did not need to have amazing visuals, they could have just went with cell shade visuals to tell the same story, better yet present the story as a book. Isn’t a Lamborghini overproduced for what it is? I mean ultimately it’s a car? Well yes and no, it’s a lifestyle object and they can produce it however they want to. Calling something overproduced is a limited way of looking at things. Of course it is. Almost everything is so why not just move on from this
As someone who has limited funds, limited shelf-space, and limited table-space, I will 100% always disagree with this. I understand for many people, "overproduced" sounds like a non-issue, but I assure you it's real for plenty of folks. There are times when a game's components are so fanciful that they get in the way of clarity and playability too.
@@DTChrisYi Yes, but similar to cars there are enough board games on this planet to cover the full spectrum of the budget. If a game is too expensive that shouldn’t be a con. Of course it could be cheaper if we stripped out the chrome and luxury parts…but why hold that against a game? Not every game strives to be for the mass market, not every car is for everyone. It’s okay to select who you want to sell to because you feel there is demand. Those who cannot afford shouldn’t feel negatively about it but instead pick one if the thousands of games that are within their budget.

I think it just depends on the games being discussed. Chris is more interested in Euro's and Roy is interested in epic, heavily thematic games.

This game was so boring. It was just an overwrought cube pusher.
