So during college, i hung out with this group of africans. The main guy, my best friend, Zola from Zimbabwe. He was a super macho guy that never showed emotion. So i decided to put this movie on for them telling them it was a macho movie about fighting. There were kenyans, nigerians, Congolese, Zimbabweans, etc... Group of tough men. At the end, they all had Ryls reaction. Couldn't even hold back. Zola got up crying and went straight to his room, locked himself in. I thought he was mad and embarrassed and didn't want the other "men" seeing him cry but apparently he had not been talking to one of his brothers in africa so he locked himself in his room to call him to say sorry for something. He never told me why. I understood and didn't pry. He thanked me for showing him this movie.
Nick Nolte was nominated for an Oscar for this role. You know he’s gonna share the money with Tommy. I’m with Ryl, this movie and that song tears me up. Great reaction as always.
Thank you for reminding me of this gem. I try to watch it every now and then. The human experience is a heavy burden, happiness is well hidden in small packages throughout. So keep fighting, even when you can't, still strive for tomorrow.
i never clicked on a movie reaction this fast! lol. one of my all time favorites - criminally underrated film. every time i watch this with my sons, i always end up crying at the end. 😭
I definitely cried when I first seen this movie. Because I know what it was like growing up with family member that where lost in the drink. This movie hits hard on so many levels. Through faith and believe 🙏 i finally found the strength to forgive them and to forgive myself. 💯 Absolutely Amazing Reaction 👏 🙌🤝🙏
Nick Notle is listening to "Moby Dick" on tape. It's a book about a Captain's obsession about a white whale. He sacrifices everything to the white whale. When Tommy is entering the hotel room, Paddy is drunk and begging the captain to stop the ship, because he's killing everyone.
The reason Tommy's fights were portrayed as so fast and brutal is because the actor had very limited actual skill/experience with MMA. While the actor playing Brendan has real martial arts training and skill. It worked awesomely and what a beautifully, heartbreaking and triumphant film. 🙏😎💯🔥
@@harveywestern490 Is he really? Damn, that's cool. I'm sure making this movie DID have something to do with it. I can just imagine on set them messing with him saying "Yeah, we're portraying you as this ultimate badass who gets in and out of his fights so fast... But it's only because you have a toddler's understanding of real MMA" 😆 and if he's as alpha a dog is I'm guessing he is that wasn't sitting too well LOL
That's a problem in recovery. Sometimes people can't forgive what you've said and done. All you can do is move forward and hope that they come around someday. (Funny that you ladies had that exact conversation while I was typing this) I'm 12 years clean and sober on November 11th and some people still can't forgive things. I just had to move on and hope it changes someday.
As someone who is sitting here and looking at 8 years without a drink a mere 3 days from today, seeing the scene of the dad during a relapse screaming "stop the ship" while listening to Moby dick is perfectly fitting for the total despair that hits you when you're drunk and thinking about how great it would be to be sober. Congratulations on your sobriety and here's hoping for a lot more years ahead for both of us October 16th 2016 was the day I gave up the alcohol and got help
Im an alcoholic. And i am an amateur kickboxer as of the last 2 years, since i stopped drinking. Once an alcoholic you are always one. Its about your choice to hooefully stop using. This has always been one of my favorite movies to inspire my reconnect with poeple. Not that i "hurt" them. But i wasnt always nice either. The lroblem with getting sober is you can forgive yourself, and you need to... But you always wish that you will be forgiven. And thus movie shows how having been a monster can lead you down the same path because you finally put others before you because you love them. And the pain can cause a poor reaction. You don't need to forget someones mistakes, but you can forgive. And the truth is, its beneficial to them, but also to yourself. Don't harbor hatred. The world will be better for it.
This move is tragic...you feel bad for tommy because of his past and he was a soldier and that whole story....then you feel bad for brendan because hes doing everything he can to save his family...and then you feel bad for the dad because he knew he fucked up but their past but hes good now ...and at the end they all win
Tommy wasn’t smirking - that’s just Tom Hardy’s mouth. The dad talking about “stop the ship” etc. is from the audio book that he listens to on his Walkman
When God forgives, He forgives completely, and forever. He says, "I will remove your sin as far as the east is from the west, and I will REMEMBER IT NO MORE!" One of the hardest things for people to do, is accept such forgiveness. His mercy is real.
I love this movie… I could definitely relate, me & my brother couldn’t stand each other growing up.. Me being the oldest, helping a single mother.. and he was the only boy.. 2 years younger. I still held a grudge after he got out of the marines.. it took for me to watch this movie & understand. I was definitely Tommy even though he served special forces & went through so much.. now we are as thick as thieves!
31:40 he's listening to Moby Dick on audiobook and begging Ahab to stop the ship, it's an allegory for Tommy and his self destructive path to forgiving himself for leaving his brother with their alcoholic dad. He feels the same guilt for going AWOL, he feels like he abandoned his brothers. Brendan absolves him of this guilt at the end when he tells him that's it's okay and that he loves him.
His dad was also in the military and suffered from PTSD, when he relapsed and was screaming "stop the ship" I am thinking he is guilt ridden because it appears they left people behind who most likely died.
when the dad is drunk and keeps yelling, "STOP THE SHIP!" He's listening to the book, 'Moby Dick' and he's reciting it as part of his AA coping techniques. and he broke is sobriety to prove to Tommy that he still loves him even if he hates him back and would give up 1000 days to do it.
Brendan's fight style seems similar to Kazushi Sakuraba arguably the best ever. Koba is pretty much Fedor arguably the best ever heavyweight. Tommy's fighting style seems to be similar to Wanderlei Silva a very savage and aggressive fighter. I would put him in the GOAT argumement, except for all the steroids
@@babyfood9537 Koba might be, it's been a while since I saw the movie. I guess I was making more of a comparison to build. But the styles of Phil Baroni and Frank Mir hold up for the brothers I think.
The drunk scene the dad is reciting the book he’s listening to. I don’t think Tommy was happy he broke him it was just more of this is the father I know and I know how to handle this now
It also made him think for a moment that he was basically addicted to the rage he felt and that made him feel just enough remorse to identify with his dad's struggles in that moment.
It’s hard to watch this movie without at LEAST doing an ugly cry face, if not actually shedding a tear lol. Something really does hit home about extremely strained family relations, where there is - or was - so much love and pain. Another “family drama” so to speak that I like is Ordinary People. Quite a different oeuvre, it focuses on a wealthy white family around Chicago and how a tragedy affects them, especially the teenage son. Being WASPS, they of course are reluctant to discuss any of this openly heh. I do recommend it.
This movie brings me to tears every single time i watch it... such a deep touching story, maybe also growing up in an abusive house i relate somewhat to this. Fantastic movie, Tom Hardy looks like a monster in this!
i will die on this hill, the only thing not believable is Tommy losing. ain't no way, bruh. Brendan would've been KO'd in the first. still a great movie, manly tears genre go to.
@bonecold4387 Fr fr. Even he would say he's the worst fighter there! But Tommy had like ZERO HP taken away in his fights they were all ended quickly with the cleanest of victories. If I'm not mistaken we don't see him take more than 1 good landed hit before the finale, and Brendan went through hell in legit all previous fights especially Koba. By every single thing the movie set-up for us Tommy should've won within the first 15sec, even if that didn't happen it shouldn't have gotten to the point of him shoulder being popped.
"They'll have to kill me to get me out of that cage" Brendon was the warrior who had something to prove as well as needing to win vs Tommy who just wanted to hurt people so he didn't feel the pain and figured it would get him the money to take care of someone else.
I don’t know how Tommy is the bad guy in this scenario but you can’t really play both sides, their dad took out his anger and frustrations on his kids. People are very much afraid of what they don’t understand, anyone in Tommy’s position would have done the exact same thing.
Sadly, this movie bombed at the box office and due to that it hasn't been watched by as many as it should. I assume this review by you guys will be one of the least viewed due to that. It wasn't marketed well by Lionsgate, advertised solely a fight film aimed towards young men. The fact that it has an 8.1 on IMDB (which is in the top 250 films of all-time w/ a minimum 100K votes) shows that it is well liked by everyone - males and females, young and old.
It's absolutely insane how talented British and Australian actors are. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton are top tier acting talent, and they're so damn good here.
How is that phone funny? 🤦♂️ I can't imagine what one attached to a wall would make you do.. 🤦♂️ 2011 isn't even a long time ago 🤣🤦♂️🤷♂️ I could facepalm to so much of this all day..

He should have won, just for that relapse scene alone.
You two are consistently quick on the uptake (e.g. catching the different last names), always great reactions, keep it up!
If you don't cry at the end, you're not human. This film is perfect ❤️
I remember seeing this in 2011.... god time goes by fast.

Easily...the most slept on, underrated sports movie ever!
Am I wrong? Maybe I'm just too unaware...does this gem get the acknowledgement it deserves?
It was very highly rated and Nick Nolte was nominated for an Oscar.
As good as it is I agree that it's underrated. People talk about Rocky but this is up there as an all time classic
Charles "Mask" Lewis Jr., the founder of Tapout was supposed to be in this movie but he died in a car crash right before filming started.
