Doug, great review. I have a CLS SHooting Brake, but it’s a diesel version. 2 little points of interest. The first thing is, this car was sold with run flat tyres and a TPS system. It also had a tyrefit, gel system or it could be ordered with a 19in space saver spare wheel. The second thing is, that’s really nice is when you pull the release for the rear seats folding, the rear headrests drop down into their lowest position AND the front seats will move forward electrically to allow the back rests to fold down. The E Class does this too. I forgot something else. The rear window has a magnetic (and release button) “parcel shelf’ which you can remove to allow you to pack up to the window/ceiling. The end of the stowage cover is articulated. This is what fits under the “parcel shelf”. Other nice touches, which you mentioned, like the gas struts on the underfloor stowage, which is secured by a latch, and a vertical net separator for the load compartment to the rear passengers. When you pull the chrome handle the latch disengages. There’s also stowage on the left rear wheel arch, which is where I keep my tyrefit kit, windscreen frost cover, a set of reflective vests and the cargo net. The underfloor space is enormous. I keep two aluminium camping chairs and the obligatory Mercedes umbrella under there. When we go food shopping, I can fit 3 large shopping bags under the floor WITHOUT taking the chairs and umbrella out. My car doesn’t have the Bang and Olufsen sub woofer, so there’s tons more space. I’m not getting rid of mine ever (or until the UK government bans diesels in 2030) as I love the styling, the comfort and the practicality.
@@mortensenvick5711 I’m in the UK, and European (and other market) specs are always different. We don’t get anywhere near the option choices that they have in Europe due to being right hand drive. I think there’s only a few markets left that drive on the right: India, Cyprus, Japan are the ones that come to mind. I think it’s the production cost and pricing strategies that impact what we get in the UK. For example, massage seats and ventilated seats were only available in the E-Class AMG E63(s) on the previous model.
@@pgVeritas Yeah that's true, also Australia, South Africa and Thailand are rhd markets. Also I remember to read the CLS 63 S is rear wheel drive on these markets, whereas it's awd in the rest of the world. That's pretty interesting actually.
Doug the “RS” is race start, every cls63 has the ability to go into this mode, however you must be stopped, with suspension in “sport plus” and traction control in “ESC Sport” mode. If both these criteria are met, and the engine is to temp, it will go into “RS”.
This is literally my favourite Mercedes ever. I am obsessed with it since it came out. It is like a Aston Martin Zagato without costing million dollars.

@@backroad_e9x technically you need a few things: 1. Engine oil temp at 179F 2. Sport+/Manual mode engaged 3. Suspension in level 2 4. Traction in Sport handling 5. Car in drive 6. Douglas, the true way to determine whether a car is a shooting brake or not is to look at the difference between the back of the front wheel and the front part of the front door and the front of the back wheel and the back side of the back door. The back of the front wheel on a shooting brake will be much further from the front door on shooting brakes than on station wagons or coupes or hot hatches or any similar vehicle.
Seeing an Instagram handle on a car immediately just makes me sigh. Especially since Instagram keeps recommending me the world’s most lame car accounts. I don’t want to see someone’s dumb 2005 Seat Ibiza.
The chrome badge on the back is there to tell you to not mess around with them, or the gang gonna beat you up. Jk Its somewhat an insignia of saudi's royal family
Back in 2014 I visited Munich, Germany. While I was there, I rented a CLS 350 diesel Shooting Brake from Hertz. I drove it across Germany all the way to Geneva, Switzerland. I didn’t plan to rent it as my reservation was for a 5 series/E class wagon but they gave me the CLS Shooting Brake which turned out very beautiful and luxurious. Also, it was very unique and turned many heads :)
RS is Race Start, basically Mercedes AMG speak for launch control. It definitively works and Doug, as a previous AMG owner you should know how it works.
If you look at the owner's insta page, you'll find that the car came from Saudi Arabia. My best guess is that it was either flown or put in a shipping container and wasn't scrutinized upon entry. After that, how it got California plates is beyond me especially since they didn't come back after a search.
Contrary to popular belief you can import any car you want to the U.S., but typically the cost to convert to U.S. standards (sometimes more than the actual car) and the red tape of Customs make it not worth the effort. Being that the E63 wagon is sold here and this CLS is essentially the same car it was probably relatively painless to legally import it.
@@PremierAutoMan86 Your first statement is technically correctly but not so confident in your second statement. Read Doug DeMuro's "four legal ways to import a car to the US" on Jalopnik - he's kind of an expert on this matter and he explains why European cars are almost impossible to import prior to 25 year exemption - even when based on similar models sold in US. A very cool car and interesting import and license plate mystery.
I have a 2013 CLS 250 shooting brake and I love it. Occasionally you see another on the road but not often. I love it when a car goes by and a kid turns to stare at it wondering what model it is. Used to happen quite often before Covid-19

@@ryanflanagan8879 google it :) The full procedure is to put the car in S+/M, put traction control in sport, left foot on brake, turn the dial to RS, right paddle to confirm, right foot full gas, let go of brake within about 5 seconds. ... an "original" shooting brake should be a 2 door station wagon like the Ferrari FF. This is just regular station wagon with smooth edges at the rear.
100% correct. Mercedes marketing department needs to be shot in the face for calling this a Shooting Brake. Just like when they released that "4-door Coupe" a few years ago. What's next from Mercedes? A four-wheel bicycle? A rear-mounted front engine? Maybe a naturally-aspirated turbo? Fuck off.
@@randorandom Considering there is no official definition for the car body style, you are wrong. The shooting-brake was originally a type of carriage that carries hunters and that name has been used for many different cars that all look more or less like an wagon.
original thinking for the shooting brake was for it to NOT be an utility vehicle, as the normal station wagons were, but a luxury car with a trunk to fit the rifle for hunting. Most notable difference was not in the multiplicity of the doors, but in the rear end. Normal wagons had straight rear window for carrying max cargo possible, shooting brakes had rounded tail designs, and generally trunk not much bigger than the normal luxury counterparts, but fit for long items, such as rifles.
Pretty normal car which you often see on our german roads. But I love your fascination about this beast! Definitely one of my favorites power station wagons!
Oh, a hookah bar. I guess where rich young Arab princes hang out. Knowning how Doug loves wagons this is like drugs for him
Who doesn't love wagons?
Does your CLS have double laminated glasses?
@@mortensenvick5711 Unfortunately, it doesn’t have double glazed windows. I’m not sure this was available, though it may well be on the AMG CLS 63.
@@pgVeritas Thanks, or maybe they decided to get only on the E-class
Doug: "Thisss is cool"
Me: "They got us in the first half not gonna lie"
Doug the “RS” is race start, every cls63 has the ability to go into this mode, however you must be stopped, with suspension in “sport plus” and traction control in “ESC Sport” mode. If both these criteria are met, and the engine is to temp, it will go into “RS”.
NO ONE offers such comprehensive, interestin and fun car reviews as Doug DeMuro!
THANKS DOUG!

This is literally my favourite Mercedes ever. I am obsessed with it since it came out. It is like a Aston Martin Zagato without costing million dollars.
It's unfortunate that it has not the designo wooden luggage compartment floor

Ultra-limited production = Everywhere in the UK. Literally, wouldn't cause a head-turn.
cls shooting brake yes, but the 63 amg version I'm not sure
@@rp003.0 The ratio of AMG to no-AMG is especially high for the Shooting Brake.
@@rp003.0 Most non car people wouldn't even know what an AMG is and couldn't recognise them. For most people it's just another Mercedes no matter what

I had a 2014 CLS550 and have always wanted the shooting brake and if they were available in North America I would've had one. Thanks so much for the review on this car, great job Doug!
9:33 - I love how Daddy Demuro always change his height according the weather, season or car color.
The rs mode means race start mode which is launch control and you need to be in sport traction to enable it
You also need to be in sport plus mode beforehand, plus the car was in PARK.
@@backroad_e9x technically you need a few things:
1. Engine oil temp at 179F
2. Sport+/Manual mode engaged
3. Suspension in level 2
4. Traction in Sport handling
5. Car in drive
6. Steering wheel straight
7. Left foot on the brake.
Then You can launch it. It’s a pain to get right the first few times, but once you have it you pretty much memorize it and go.
@@Mean_Bean279 disappointed Doug didn't figure that out & give us show of it, hahah!
This is unquestionably awesome, but with 2 kids and 2 dogs, the E63 is still my choice. If I only had either the kids OR the dogs, I’d be unreasonably lusting after this one.
That said, I’m crazy jealous of the hydraulic spare well cover!
Doug the type of guy to pretend to be asleep in the car so his boys will carry him inside.
I dunno man doesn’t seem like a bad idea
I audibly laughed when I read this..
Lol
You should have talked about how this car was imported to the US.
Yeah exactly hpe did they get around that? Its not 25 years old or whatever
I'm sure that either Doug doesn't want us to know or the owner didn't want the details on video. The former, because Doug wants the wagon and the latter, so he has the only one in the U.S.
I don't see the issue. It would be cool to find out.
The issue would be having the car serviced.
@@Andrew-zv4fm I don't think it would be too much of a problem getting it serviced tbh. Unless something goes catastrophically wrong with the rear hatch area, it's pretty much all CLS. I know it's an "S" but, MBUSA should be able to sort out any engine management issues. I love your original comment 👍
This is cool. This is a 2015 Mercedes AMG CLS 63 shooting brake

That chrome sticker and insta handle on the plate is so tacky. A lesson on how to ruin a beautiful car. :(
Seeing an Instagram handle on a car immediately just makes me sigh. Especially since Instagram keeps recommending me the world’s most lame car accounts. I don’t want to see someone’s dumb 2005 Seat Ibiza.
Not as bad as @ stickers on the windows. That should be a crime . The owner makes up for it with that hideous chrome badge tho
The chrome badge on the back is there to tell you to not mess around with them, or the gang gonna beat you up. Jk
Its somewhat an insignia of saudi's royal family
true. Imagine no stickers, not labels, no logos... the design is so damn beautiful anything will ruin it.

THIS is the wagon Doug always would’ve wanted!

@@johnelliott2497 I love cars and COD haha
I was just hoping this one would be fitted with the optional teak wood decking in the boot, just so Doug can laugh at it for being inherently quirky.
I was too! By far the coolest option you could get on the Shooting Brake. How much did it cost back then?
@@jannissfr I have no idea but it was quite a pricey option.
RS is Race Start, basically Mercedes AMG speak for launch control. It definitively works and Doug, as a previous AMG owner you should know how it works.
I am still curious how it ended up here and was titled.
@doug will hopefully put something on more Doug or he was told not to shar3
@@PremierAutoMan86 any idea how I could do this with a GR Yaris?
@@PremierAutoMan86 Your first statement is technically correctly but not so confident in your second statement. Read Doug DeMuro's "four legal ways to import a car to the US" on Jalopnik - he's kind of an expert on this matter and he explains why European cars are almost impossible to import prior to 25 year exemption - even when based on similar models sold in US. A very cool car and interesting import and license plate mystery.

RS on the drive mode selector is "race start" (launch control). You need to be in S+ or M and have your foot on the brake to be able to select it
Wow, really? I can't tell if I'm being trolled, but I feel OK about it...
@@ryanflanagan8879 google it :) The full procedure is to put the car in S+/M, put traction control in sport, left foot on brake, turn the dial to RS, right paddle to confirm, right foot full gas, let go of brake within about 5 seconds.
It's a royal pain in the backside to do, and honestly I find just flooring the gas in S+ and Sport traction is completely identical. I think some people just enjoy the theatrics...
Starting my new year off right .
“THIIISSSS”
... an "original" shooting brake should be a 2 door station wagon like the Ferrari FF.

The British Heart Association would like you to know that:
