- Time to improve our bedroom wind situation! In this video I install a ceiling fan from B&Q, the rather oddly named "Colours Hanki". A bit of a fiddly job but well worth it in the end.

I must say it was a little nerve wracking on the first night, hoping I'd done a good job of securing it to the ceiling - it hangs directly above my crotch 😂

I bought one of these fans from B&Q and I found it quiet difficult to install as the manual only had pictures but no instructions. The screws that go into the joists are rubbish and both of mine got threaded. The fan only had earth, live and neutral connections, so if your old ceiling rose or fan has a 'loop' connection then you have to buy a connector. I got my connector from tool stations the name of it is 'Spring Level Connector' and I bought the 3 terminal 250V 32A version (item: 45879). This did the job for me. The other two things I found difficult to understand and to do was the twisting and aligning in the socket where the pole connects to the ceiling brace and putting on the lighting element. The lighting element had very small screws, the wiring got in the way when I was putting it on and it didn't sit right on when all the screws were tightened. Some screws went in further than others, so it looked lop sided. The very last thing is the wobble. I haven't balanced it yet, however it does have excessive wobble and at the highest speed it is very noticable.
Yes, I had all the same challenges as you with my install. Although in my case the fan hasn't needed any balancing at all. The screws were completely awful, not looking forward to when I have to remove it again
I have 6 wires coming out of ceiling 2 wires leading to switch 2 black and 2 red. I bought the same fan as you from b and q that only has netural live and earth.
What wires do I need to connect to this spring leaver connector that I bought from took station?
So did you put the 3 red cables (live) in the spring leaver connector you bought from Toolstation?
Then did you put the light switch live wire (the one with red tape on it) into the fans connecting block labeled live, followed by 2 neutral wires into the fans neutral connecting block followed by the earth into the connecting block labeled earth on fan?
@@ctrldelete1763 First off I would take a picture of the existing rose wiring on your phone, this is so you can refence which cable goes where.
My existing rose pendant had one wire going into the Live, one wire going into the neutral and all the rest of the wires went into the connector called loop in the old rose.
When I fit my fan, I put all the loop connectors into a spring leaver connector and then just put the other cables (L and N) on the old rose into the L and N of the fan.
So to recap, any wire which are was for the loop (in the old rose) went into the spring connector and all the other cables I just wired up like for like (so N goes into the N on the fan, for example).
I will just say, I am not a electrician and only have a limited skill with electrics. I understand the basics of wiring these up by watching UA-cam videos ( For example: ua-cam.com/video/FjmC0qx1nrU/v-deo.html )
Thx for the information mate. And what about the noise? Is it too much or not? Maybe it will be noisy after a couple mounts.
So far it's been extremely quiet. There is a very faint hum from the motor but it's almost inaudible. It's possible it will get more noisy with time, but we've been using ours most nights for 3 weeks and so far it's stayed very quiet.

How tall is the ceiling BTW? Is it a standard 2.4m/7’10 or is it taller?
i have this fan and its 18 inches across and the height is 410mm

I bought a similar one from Argos. But the bracket is very small. How do you know you hit the joists?
In my case I was lucky, I could see the joist through the hole in the ceiling where the wiring came through. If you're not sure though, one way to do it is to poke a screwdriver through from the other side (if you have access to the joists in the loft) next to where a joist is. If you can't access the other side of the ceiling, you could also use a boroscope to poke up through a hole and look around for the joists.

Other option here if not close to a joist would be to fit a “fake” joist in your loft with some wood connected to the actual joists and screw it in to that.

Yes, there's a remote for controlling the fan speed and turning the light on and off
How do you put in winter mode?
There's a switch on the top of the motor assembly which will change the direction of the spin
Help help. This is exactly what I need. However, I am not completely clear about the wiring. I have the same looped system, old wires which, in the switch box have infact been wired "black" for live and red for neutral, which didn't help. Although, in all fairness to the electrician they did cover the black wire with a red sheet at the switch and the wire coming out of the ceiling. So that established. What I needed a, slower visual for was the switch wiring wire seems to be a wire you have seperate from the rest. I needed to see what the live switch wire was linked up with at the ceiling? Plus the where the two live wires from the fan go into on the other side of the ceiling fitment. Have you a diagram sir, that you could make it clear what wires are coupled with what one dude of the connecter and the other. If I've made it clear, being a complete non electrician. But I can understand, if shown, what goes where and what doesn't, if shown. Sadly my instructions doesn't show "wiring with multiple wires loops". Just shows it with single wires. Your video is great, but just need to understand a little more. If you would so kind to help me. All I know is I've got the combination wrong. All works, lights con on on both fans in living room, but if I use the switch now it blows the fuse😭. So I need help with my configuration. Knowing that I am almost there 😂👍 Thank you. David - Devon

With respect, if you are not confident with electrical wiring you should get a qualified electrician to do the work. I'm not qualified to give you advice on how to wire electrical connections.
In the video I do explain how to wire the connections - the earth and neutral connections connect directly to the fan and the live connection is connected via the light switch.
