This video is actually the beginning of his downfall sadly enough. Being a teenager touring with adults, anytime there was a drink around (which there are plenty in the music industry, let alone bluegrass)- he couldn’t refuse it. Early brain altering habits are the hardest to shake…
Amen to that! Millions of people can say they're from Detroit or Chicago or New York City. But few can say compared to the rest of the world can say they're from Appalachia! My Dad was from Knott County, Kentucky and my Mom is from Floyd County, Kentucky.
I think it’s mind blowing that even as a teenager Keith Whitley demanded the attention of America’s true greats in Ralph Stanley, a young Ricky Skaggs and not only was his singing so good, his guitar playing must of been something else for Lester Flat to give him a pre War Martin D 28🤯 Compare this to the tone deaf Nashville scene who rejected him for so long and it speaks volumes imo.
Keith is the reason I got into blue grass …. hearing him on my grandfathers blue grass albums as a little 6 yr old . I knew even at that young age what a beautiful voice sounded like . So different than the other blue grass singers I’d heard up until then he just had something in him no one else did since Hank Sr.
This is an end to a golden era of everything that was awesome in America. Thank you both for your singing and picking. I'm so glad I met Ralph a few times. What a kind, gentle, and also goofy man!
Before he started his country career, he played bluegrass with JD Crowe. They were a highly successful band with Keith singing and playing guitar. I saw a video where JD discusses his conversation when Keith talks about his desire to sing country songs.
My dad played bluegrass for 33 years with the seldom scene and I loved being around all the greats of bluegrass like keith and Tony rice , Dave Evans larry sparks bill grant and delia bell flat and scruggs and russell more
But Ralph....(OMG)my family grew up with him, went to Rio. In homes there in east KY and the toe of va., the hills. I so love him as man and true son of the mountain music.
I've been to his mom's house in sandy hook ky many times and watched him and rickey scaggs play on Saturday evenings at the courthouse in west liberty ky
I' followed keith whitley since he started with Ralph stanley back when I was a young kid I even loved him with jd crowe when he went solo in country music , I won 250 dollars in karaoke when I sang I never go around mirrors . There will never be a talent greater than keith he is missed as much today as when he passed away
@@alan4sure Thanks for pointing this out to me. I have great respect for anyone's name. I also have very poor spelling, as you have seen. Made correction. Thanks again! It appears we have the same first name.
This is what Keith Whitley was created by God to do, sing traditional and bluegrass ballads - just beautiful - nobody better... Where Keith went wrong, was his attraction to the bright lights and the big time Country scene. What a shame, he should have stayed with his roots, and he would have gone on to be the Leader and carry the bluegrass torch on from Ralph Stanley and Bill Monroe. Instead he went for Big Time country - Nashville, and got burned up by it - that's really what killed him. Damn shame. Remember everybody - stay true to who you are, to hell with the popular world...
Blame the Appalachian women. They got too fat and the women in Nashville were much hotter. Not trying to be funny - it's about the women more than the money.
No, he was country from the start.. it was his brother dwight who formed a bluegrass band, he decided to join… but really he enjoyed country the most. He wouldnt have tsken the trip down to Nashville otherwise
I'd like a opportunity to audition for any bluegrass band needing a lead singer , I don't play and instrument tho but I've been told by many people I have a great voice for bluegrass and I'm wanting to do something with it before it's too late
Good to see people talking about eastern Kentucky I'm from West liberty ky just a few miles from sandy hook in elliott county . I now live in jackson county ky and love it as much as I did morgan county
Not a better combo anywhere with Keith singing lead and Ralph singing tenor!! Me and my dad would go to the Ralph Stanley hills of home festivals every year and heard Ralph tell the story of when he was going to do a show in West Virginia and had a flat tire and was late for the show so the folks putting the concert on put a young Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs who was in the audience on stage to play until Ralph got there. Ralph said when he got there and heard them boys pickin and singing he thought somebody was playing an old Stanley brother’s record! He went to their parents and had them sign permission to go on tour with him! Ralph said they did the Stanley Brothers better than the Stanley Brothers!!
The harmony between those two is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard, I listen to it atleast once a day. And like others have said he looks so very happy here.
The more I hear and see of Keith Whitley I find it more than disturbing that he left this world so early. What an unbelievable talent.

Sadly, this is the end of the once greatest country in the world period.😢
Keith was one of my favorite country singers. I'll never forget the day I was driving home and heard the country station said he was dead. 🙏🇺🇸🪕🎻
Timmy clines dad playing here. Fiddler
Love classical, rock & roll and country, but bluegrass is my favorite ♥️
Two of the best there ever was. RIP you two.
Probably the best all around voice I've ever heard. Don't understand how Nashville over looked Kieth so long!!!
He's Lefty Frizzell reincarnated
He was 15 when he got started

My dad played bluegrass for 33 years with the seldom scene and I loved being around all the greats of bluegrass like keith and Tony rice , Dave Evans larry sparks bill grant and delia bell flat and scruggs and russell more
I still listen to the Seldom Scene. Every day!!!
Wow, what a childhood!
But Ralph....(OMG)my family grew up with him, went to Rio. In homes there in east KY and the toe of va., the hills. I so love him as man and true son of the mountain music.

"Borned and raised in Eastern Kentucky, waaaay back in the sticks, in a little town called Sandy Hook..." gets me every time, for some reason.
I love Keith but guess we all have our own demons.
Keith (not Kieth)
What's the name of the first song?
Spelled his name wrong. KEITH.
