I was born in 2007 I wish I lived in the 60s or 70s where I got to listen to this music with out getting made fun of by the bully's at my school. God bless Ralph Stanley
Fuck those bully's, stick a knife in them, they will lay down.
Stand your ground and do what you do, do well
God bless you..dont let em get you down..theyre the losers.
Them bullies now will grow up listening to this music trust me it never fails 💯💯 Keep listening and doing you
I no what your saying but just stay to what you like and don't worry about those bully's
All my people are from the next county over from where Keith and Ricky were raised. From the time I first heard Keith, there was a reassuring familiarity in his music that I could never put my finger on, most especially when he sang bluegrass. Finally I realized that there are slight things he does in his vocal, especially how he forms certain words that traces right back to the same area that as a young kid I learned to sing and pick. The little vocal runs into a phrase or word is nearly angelic to me. My family and the people that were the most important to me were always teaching me how to pick and included me in the music, which never stopped. One of the best gifts they ever gave me was music. I am getting upper-middle-aged now and the world is a lonely place sometimes without great talents like Keith, the elders of my family that brought me along and shared a blessing with me, and others, but I know we will all be together again someday and hopefully in the meantime I can come listen to MY personal favorite lead bluegrass vocal of all time. He may not be for everyone, but it sure takes me home and fills my heart. I'm thankful for what Keith gave us.
Such heartfelt words, expressing deep connection with the music.
I’m from Morgan County myself, like you, just the next county over from Elliot County and Sandy Hook. My grandfather was a Sexton and could play any musical instrument you put in front of him. He played with Ralph Stanley a few times. So many great men are gone now….
Thanks for sharing -- this was a beautiful read.
Inspires us and along with family and friends music will guide us to peaceful rest!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌💟🙏
Well Suh, mah kinfolk done got raised up in the exact spot where Ricky's maw done tripped and fell while commencing to make a quick trip to the outhouse. In fact, it was mah pappy that hired on during shine season to shuck they corn. If'n you was a-thinking you was country on account of your connection, Ah'm hear to set the record strate. I recollect your folk was referred to as shysters and reprobates. Times was we kep a couple possums on the back porch for nutrition, but I ain't got the notion that your kin done so.
There will never be another like Ralph Stanley. I love Blue Grass.
none like Carter neither, they'ze was just a head of their time zone and things.. they'ze was amazing, just loved them there great musicians folks.
How about The Osborne brothers?
I went to school in Hyden Ky same as The Osbornes.
What a truly bad ass piece of music. Thank God someone recorded this. It blows my mind how bad county music and how bluegrass has almost totally died as far as main stream stuff goes, and when I say blue grass I mean blue grass like this^^^. All band members singing like that would be unheard of now. I like old crow and Rawlings and all that for sure. The main stream country is just flat terrible “ Wake up America “
Correction. There is no country music anymore :(

Somebody in the audience looks exactly like Ricky Skaggs.
I wish that I was born in that period in USA... beautiful music.. greetings from Croatia
Me too. I am thankful to live here though.
I thought the same thing
I could have been one of the kids in the beginning. I had that striped shirt & bowl-cut red hair. Like yesterday.
Me and my family are from that area. Rememthe grass is always greener over thar. But I do miss those hills.
This is one of the best concerts to have ever been done. Just straight perfection
I would love to go back in time to 1977 and see this this group and then attend a real NASCAR race.
And put a few thousand down on google & amazon stock in the early 90s
Now with Renfro's passing in july 2019 they are all together again in heaven where they can play forever. This group is the best for playing mt. music and all them singing together. I play this just about every day.
Might even see a good fist fight too
it was around 76 or 77 it was a year or 2 before i got married so i cant remember exactly a friend of mine and I drove up to ralph stanly,s festival from tenn we got there a week early so we could sight see we pulled up at curly ray,s home i was scared to death i knew we was going to get shot i didnt know he knew curly very well by the way just in case who ever was to read this didnt know curly was ralph fiddler till he passed frankie blowed the horn curly come out i just knew we was going to get a cussing but instead curly hollered out hey frankie how are ye get out, my friend was frankie moore if u look on ralph stanly box set u will see it says a special thanks to frankie moore for making this possible he had ever record and album on the original label that the stanly bro,s every recorded so when they got ready to make the box set curly had called frankie to borrow his albums for ralph so they could make the box set with the original labels ,but anyways i getting sidetracked i had a d28 martin that i played and sang with and still have today frankie ask curly would you mind playing a couple songs with my friend curly said be glad 2 talk about a memory i will never forget that

I'm a diehard Keith Whitley fan, but how about that Jack Cooke? There's a Bluegrass voice!
Yes, Jack Cooke was excellent, a transcedent voice and gentelmen. There couldn't be a finer man on the planet.
Came across this during the pandemic of 2020 and love it. Thank you for showing us real talent reality.

I was fortunate to see Ricky Skaggs and Kieth Whitley with Ralph Stanley at Yale in New Haven in Ct. They had a coffee house about once a month. I think it was in
1972. I didn’t realize what I was seeing at the time. I’ll never forget it.
I don't think anything could wipe the smile off my face. It's wonderful.
A pure treasure for the heart❤
Love that Renfro too💜
I'm 27 years old and grew up on this type music bc of my grandfather who was a founding member of the The Panhandle Express band from Northwest Florida and toured around and about with some of the same bands around in these days. Bluegrass festivals was where I learned about real music and this here's what real music is. Iv been apart of a lot of music genres around my location from bluegrass/country to death metal, which I listen to both, everyday of my being. This always brings me back home safe
Yep. Nothing like it

Good music right here. Damn. I love me some bluegrass music. Specially with Keith Whitley and Ralph Stanley. With all of these guys on the stage. This is legend. Heck Yeah!!
Talk about stage presence! These guys are having an absolute blast making the crowd go nuts.

31 yrs ago today, Our Kentucky bluebird Keith whitley left this earth. RIP KEITH. you and Dr Ralph are with Cater and the boys showing St.Peter how sing Angel band.
Made me cry....😢
He was south-east Kentucky through and through , he would have loved the victory the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team had today in the Super-Regionals, it won't be long.
Gosh, 31 years, i remember when it was announced. all I knew then was that a star had been lost, a big star with lots of hits.
@dabneyoffermein595 it's been 35 yrs now and I miss Keith Whitley's more than ever. He was the Kentucky bluebird. Another Kentucky boy who came to a bad ending was Gary stewart. Those two were honky tonk kings 🤴 💜
Right after Bill Monroe there's Ralph Stanley. He grew up in the mountains singing the high lonesome sound. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys touched many lives during the many years they played. I was honored to have heard them a couple of times. They were truly an American treasure. We love and miss you Ralph!
I had the privilege to become close friends with Renfro, we played in another band together and traveled many miles, sharing many laughs together. He was an awesome person as well guitarist. Rest in peace my friend and thanks for all you taught me.
tweed donahue and danny lee davis worked with troy as well. glad you had a chance to play with him. could really flat-pick that guitar.
Hard to believe that's kieth whitley.so young and talented.him and ralph together will take you on a hell of a ride.they will make you smile and make you cry.
I love this so much. Every member brings something to the group. Keith and Ralph may have the most talent, but that Curly Ray is such a character.
Always love listening to bluegrass songs
Curly could sure saw that fiddle man! He was just as talented

Now these boys are truly "artists". That word gets thrown around a lot but they're the real deal, this is beautiful art, created by masters.
TRUE!!!
Have you heard of the Cleverlys? They do bluegrass covers of old top 40 hits. They are amazing and hilarious. Try turning them on to that or some Hayseed Dixie (bluegrass AC/DC cover band) also pretty darn good.
Thank God Ralph let Keith Whitley be a Independant artist and we got blessed 2x

I remember my mother taking us to see Ralph and the clinch Mtn boys in Menifee Co ky in 1977. I will never forget it. Love hearing the old time music.
God bless them all. All but Mr. Profitt are gone but never forgotten. Thanks for the great music.
Profitt is a really good guitarist whom I believe stayed with bluegrass roots and didn't go to nashville to make it big.
Renfroe passed in 2019.
Whitley was the greatest voice country music has ever had.
Dwight desperately trying to copy him...
Keith Whitley had his own zip code. Never will be another
This is my favorite thing in the whole world Im a grown ass man. 36. This makes me tear up with joy and I'm proud to admit it. Both my grand dad Kentucky born and this is all they listened to and played and I LOVE IT best thing on UA-cam yet!!
I guess I am a little blessed and fortunate to live where I do. Keith Whitley is from a bordering county (Elliott County) and Ricky Skaggs is from another bordering county (Lawrence County) and still yet in another bordering county (Johnson County) there came two girls by the name of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle and a guy named Chris Stapleton. Just about an hour and half down the road a couple of guys named Bobby and Sonny Osbourne who live in (Leslie County). My mom worked with Bobby back in the fifties when they worked at NCR in Dayton, Ohio. Bobby and his cousin Dean Osbourne run a school that teaches Bluegrass music at the local college in Hazard, KY. Back during that period of time this video was filmed, it seemed that there was a Bluegrass festival about every weekend, somewhere. One of my best friends and myself went to Natural Bridge in Slade, KY, I believe it was the same year 1977, and we saw this same group. We stood about five feet away from the stage, so we got a good view and good listening. Back then the performers interacted with the people and would talk with you like they knew you. (Some still do) A few years ago I looked out my front door and seen a fancy horse trailer and pickup truck at the barn of a friend I went to high school with and wondered who in the world owned that fancy thing. My cousin worked for the guy, so later that day I asked my cousin, I said Al who was that in that fancy rig over at Paul's barn? He said you won't believe it, that was Ralph Stanley, he bought one of Paul's prize mules. I know Keith and Ricky first met at a Bluegrass competition about five miles from the house in a little place called Ezel, KY. My cousin and her husband along with a good friend and Ricky Skaggs brother sang gospel music in several of the local churches. I know Keith's brother Dwight also done a little playing and singing, not sure if he still does or not. There are so many VERY talented musicians and singers around here it's unreal, seems like every other person plays some kind of instrument and there are several that are REALLY good vocalists. I have Dean Osborne on facebook and can keep up with him and Bobby that way, and with others also. As I said I am blessed and fortunate to live where I do, and I try not to take it for granted as much as I used to, because not everybody is so fortunate to be surrounded by all this GREAT music, and GREAT people.
I live in Lawrence county and love it!
I’m in Boyd County! We are blessed with amazing talent around here for sure!
At 28:40, the most haunting and memorable of ANY of the songs on this evening was "I've Just Seen The Rock Of Ages" -- Keith Whitley was amazing at old time bluegrass vocals to start this song out, and when Ralph joins him a few moments later we are blessed with a duet that will always stand the test of time as there will never be a sound quite like that ever again. Ricky Scaggs was in the crowd cheering them on too.

There never has been nor will there ever be another voice like Whitley’s.
I don't know what's more the smile across my face or that my foot has taken on a mind of its own when I hear this . It's impossible to listen and not dance and sing along
That's when country was country and blue grass was bluegrass for real I was born in late fifty's
bluegrass was very popular in the 70's and even as far as the 80's and had a very big following with the likes of Bill Monroe and the King of Bluegrass himself Jimmy Martin. Once they died off, it fell off the edge but will live on forever.

Keith Whitley was such a talent !
Kevin Allen He started touring with bluegrass bands when he was 15! He also started the love affair with booze then that would ultimately take his life at 33. It's rough when you have a kid that talented, you don't want to hold them back from their dreams, but it puts them in a very adult world with no parental supervision, and he grew up way too fast. He paid a horrible price for it, as did all of us who loved his music.
OGSpaceCadet so very well said.
Shirley Shawhan Awe, thanks! I'm a big KW fan, still hard to believe we lost him just as he was really taking off, he had so much more to give. It seems like such a waste, but alcoholics like Keith are truly powerless over their addiction, and way too many end up just like him. I don't blame him, it was beyond his control, I'm just thankful for all he left behind, his voice is unreal.
OGSpaceCadet. You are welcome. I am a big KW fan also. I hate that we lost him so soon. He had a sickness that could not be cured. Nobody is to blame.

Good mountain music. Im from same town as Renfro Proffit and just a few miles away from Stanley homeplace. Keith Whitley was as close to Carter as they come. So many memories of my chilhood hearing this great music.
Sir,
Old Mullins boy from Tarpon, half way between Clintwood and Haysi. Had a Clintwood address, Clinchco phone number and went to Haysi High School in the mid 1970s. Very familiar with Ralph and band. My personal best included Roy Lee Center whom I thought had a more Carter sound. The era of Whitley, Skaggs, Cline, Center, Cooke and Raph were the very best in my humble opinion.
Wishing you the very best Sir,
