This is the holy graal of Scarlet/Fire. The night when everything worked out, when the gods of music were present on the audience. The Dead is more alive than ever!!!!
I was there, and spoke briefly to Jerry afterwards -- the only time I did. It WAS a really good show. Even Donna managed to wail on key, instead of screeching somewhere else on the musical scale. Bobby's "take a step back" rap is well-etched in memory. Actually, this was the last time I saw the Dead live. Fortunately, THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED!
Why does everyone give Donna such a hard time??? I can't sing on key in the mailbox, shower, or in a paper bag on the sidewalk... I'm even outta tune in my own head... I say..."God bless Donna", may she always live ~n wail?..!!!! Idk, I always liked her efforts!!!
This was at the awesome concert at Cornell Barton Hall. I remember driving over the hills through a late spring snow storm and it was worth it. Awesome show.
the vivid connection between the vocal lyric & the instrumental jam is so resonant, yet without boundary. I was born too late, being in my early 20’s right now I wish I could’ve been alive at the perfect time to catch at least a handful of Grateful Dead shows. Nonetheless I’m not without gratitude-I’m blessed to be able to catch the wave as best I can through the tapes. Thank you for sharing this wonderful live mix of one of my favorite tunes of theirs. ⚡️💀
Wow..I'm in my fifties and the whole "tapes"word has left most people's vocabulary. I was a little boy when this get together happened.good to know younger can appreciate.its mesmerizing and beautiful.
@@samuelbutt8149 49 here… tapes were great. And a pain in the butt too! Wish I still had mine because my current car has a tape player. Fortunately it has cd too! I’m jamming either way!
Dave - there is/was no PERFECT time - I lived through all levels and not all were perfect - Donna's wailing, 80's fast paced coke fueled shows, Jerry stumblin, mumblin shows including the last one at Soldier. My fav take away though is the beautiful peeps I've shared the shows with from 70s til now - win, lose or draw. "Every show is somebody's favorite"
LP Giobi - DeadHead Origins- in case you never heard of her. Can still enjoy the dead their music lives on and has morphed with this talented girl whose parents were Deadheads!!
My dad had a reel to reel tape of this we would play often. He used to get lots of requests from his students to dup them a copy so he would play it and record it at the same time on another deck he would check out from the university. I miss sitting in our living room listening and watching the lights out our wall sized picture window while this played.
I began to listen to the Dead in 1980. I have always been a huge Rock fan, but couldn't find any Dead in my local record places. So I went to the local library. Checked out Dead Set. Lol Fell in love. Friend of the Devil, Fire on the Mountain did it for me. And to think I was only 13. At that time I was only smoking a little weed. And in fact, was sober the weekend I investigated the Dead. Proving you don't need drugs to dig the motherfuckjng good ol' Grateful Dead. Best American band. Period! My point? Not sure, I digress time to time. Lol . No, seriously. I've never been one to listen to countless shows comparing jams. Like is the Terrapin from Texas whenever better than Anaheim '87? But after reading all the comments here I may begin to try that? Either way still and always gonna love my Grateful Dead. And yes I love Dead and Company and think John Mayer kills it. Only wish after 5 or 6 years together they might give it a go and try a new release (wouldn't that be sweet 😊) or at least expand their repertoire live some more? Keep on truckin' folks. God bless...

I was there up front but can't recall a crush except the one I had on Bobby Weir. What a night and snowing? on the way out? Lost my boyfriend that night to another. Final exams next day and off to a year in Europe the following week.
New sub Omra! Saw the Dead twice. Once at Yale Bowl in 197something, (There was a riot outside), and again in 198something for a 3 day weekend in Park City, Utah. Thousands of Deadheads filled our town for a week, some never left...
I sure miss the Grateful Dead, especially at red rocks and alpine valley shows I’d save my money a year before the show and undeniably the best place to buy quality hallucagenics and weed hash you name it , it was there good great times
I don't know that much about guitar. I don't play, but I've heard all the so-called guitar gods... Hendrix, Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Prince... I don't know about who is technically better but my ears tell me that none of them plays anywhere near as melodically as Jerry does, and for me that's the key. His playing might/might not be that hard to do, but god damn it is beautiful. If there are other guitarists who play like that please share. I wanna check them out.
Are you crazy? Do you think anyone would come even close to Jerry? He is a league with only himself in it. Jerry was as godly as a human being could be. He may not be the most technically correct but most pleasing to my ear for one.
I don't know that you'll find anyone who solos "like [this]" - the5/8/77 "Scarlet/Fire" is pretty amazing even for Jerry - but you can find guitar players who care more about melody than about speed. I've always found early Allman Brothers satisfying. If you haven't heard it, the song _Blue Sky_ has two nice solos back to back (one is Dickey Betts, the other is Duane Allman) in the middle: ua-cam.com/video/UToUzWgHGyQ/v-deo.html And while it's a different style than GD, Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits is an underrated guitarist: ua-cam.com/video/O78v_GhEtgk/v-deo.html Both of those are worth the ~10 minute investment of your time to see if they take you anywhere. Good luck!
Adams reference to early ABB is on the mark with Duane & Dickey playing off each other perfectly, and you have to give Bobby his due here. I`d also say Early Santana When Neil Schon and carlos were playing off each other and it was a wonderful melodic jam and the 1st incarnation Peter Green`s Fleetwood Mac. Not Fleetwood Mac After he left the name changed. almost a totally different sound and the guy was one of the best guitarists ever but he also had a guy named Jeremy Spencer to play off of. I love 3 piece music and sometimes People like jimi or eric and stevie can pull it at the genius level but anyway if you don`t know who peter green was? My first 3 shows Winterland March 1977 was the Deads Debut of Fire. Jerry butchered the words. or so i thought. Had no clue then of course, years later when listened to show. Just was reading an article, talking about the song, and how Hart played it since 1974, anyways it says they changed to verses around until they finally decided what order and such. Love his tone on this song.
Gave a thumbs up and was the 666 person to do that I'm superstitious big time normally I would take that down but I love the dead too much thumbs up even if I'm the one to fall on that number 👍
Can anyone explain to me why the different versions of this recording on UA-cam sound infinitely better than the official CD release of Cornell 77? Am I just crazy??
This is a lossless upload to UA-cam and should be roughly in the same ballpark as the CD. I would say the difference is in the audio equipment you are using. Modern Headphones are amazing, perhaps better than the CD, DA conveter, preamp, amp and speakers you are using to listen to the CD. God forbid it is an automobile CD - unless it is a Mark Levinson, automobiles have lots of issues with spark plug noise, road noise, poor speaker placement etc.
Love Love and Respect but Barton Hall isn't my favorite Dead concert Or my favorite Scarlet/Fire. 72 is my favorite year, particularly the European tour.
Billy Strings is the reason I started jamming with the Dead. Thanks Billy!

Yeah buddy!
Hahahah exactly !! Holy grail beautiful - changed my life and I mean it!!!!
Awesome 5 he stone Gods are good
And to think they followed this with an Estimated Prophet St Stephen Not Fade Away jam… wow Barton Hall
Isn’t this supposed to be or thought of as one of their very best shows ?
Words can't begin to describe how great this version is.
...
I’m going to say:
“Maybe not the best Scarlet…
but, probably the best Fire”
😉
all those ec shows in 78
Phil is especially brilliant and fearless in this show I mean YIKES!! Can I get an amen?
52 concerts was all I could get in with work and kids but was worth every show.❤️👍🙏 RIP Jerry G
Simply magic. The world needs some good ole Grateful Dead right now
Nobody better than the Dead. The Dead how only one thing; it's better to be alive. A gift to us all was Jerry. Miss him so much it hurt's
Never been a Dead fan. At 63 and listening to this. Obviously, I missed some great music.
Never too late to catch a seat on the bus
I also just became a Dead fan a few years ago…never realized what musicians they truly are…also their range of styles!
Yeah, this Cornell show will make you love licorice 😎❤️
The "Betty Board" sound did not disappoint. This sound is friggin unbelievable for 1977

I saw them a few times. Last at deer creek. And sold my tickets for the rest of the show's, and soldier field! 😥 Would love to trade stories!!??👈👈
Saw them 3 nights later in St Paul for the first time.
Me too 😂
Cleanest mix so far for these old ears! As good as it ever got!

me too....... the better the mix the louder it goes in my place!!!!!!!!!! this sounds very pure....... especially jerry.....
Dayummm, Jerry and friends killin’ it.
This was at the awesome concert at Cornell Barton Hall. I remember driving over the hills through a late spring snow storm and it was worth it. Awesome show.
I think that was the year it snowed right before finals at SUNY Bing
Yeah I was in 5th grade in CT. We got 2 inches but the western hills got a foot of snow!
1977 to 1980 were the absolute zenith of the dead’s 30 yr run.
We miss you, Jerry.
I was up front mesmerized by Jerry and Bobby both...in love with them and the music and still am.

Take another step back...rite on!
If you're gonna really listen to this you need to grab your headphones. Trust me. The good ones.

You cant tell everyone to "step back" then lay down an epic intro like that!! Wish I could've been there to feel that energy! ✌🖤🎶
good point sir :)
I was at 11-6-77 and they played that same song.
And another step bacj

It like being there. Sounds great 👍 thanks
