I have been shooting recurves for 50 years . This is the first time someone has explained brace height in a manner that anyone can understand . It has always been dealt with as some mystic / magical science . Thank you for that !
Nothing mystical about brace height, only "teachers who do not explain it well. It's simple physics. The lower brace height gives the arrow a longer power stroke. This actually changes the way the arrow flies. Every bow/arrow/archer combination is different so you do need to experiment and find where your bow shoots the best, arrow flight and bow noise. The bowyers numbers are just a basic guide. Good luck!
I think the reason it's confusing is that the "longer power stroke" only applies when comparing two different bows set up correctly with correct string tension. If you have two 50# bows with the same type/ brand string, the one with the shorter brace height should be faster because its got the longer stroke. However, if you take that bow with the longer brace height and try to untwist or "slacken" the string the limbs relax effectively shortening the brace height but this does not add speed because you've lost limb tension. So shortening the brace height on your own bow should make it slower not faster because of the loss of limb tension. Longer stroke yes, but less limb tension usually indicates a net loss in speed. So, lengthening the brace height on ones own bow should not add speed. I hope that still makes sense.
I’ve been shooting the compound bow for about 6 years now and after watching your videos, I decided to order my first recurve. Your videos are informative no-frills traditional archery. Plus the leather gear, the hardwood bow, and the forest landscape is a fun aesthetic for the topic. It beats some guy in his company’s polo shirt standing on a manicured lawn. These videos really makes me want to leave my backyard range and get out in nature with my bow.
I don’t see how someone can dislike this sweet lady. Quite knowledgeable, a joy to watch and learn from. Sure she’s learning new things but, honestly, who isn’t. Keep it up Lily. You’ve made a lot of good fans
Absolutely brilliant instructional video for me, as a beginner, You explained everything so well in an entertaining and concise way. I learned more from this than many other longer videos on the subject. I was not aware of the fur to silence the limbs. Also loved the 'how to' on string silencers and improvised nock marker. Your passion for your sport and equipment is very apparent. Thanks
I've ordered a Mandarin Duck Phantom and it's my first bow ever, honestly I chose it because of the review from this channel and I'm so hyped to get it so I can start modifying it like Lilly does! Really helpful and informative videos and as a complete newbie I've found much confidence and security from this channel! Thank you Lilly! You're awsome!
The string loops are made two different sizes. Put the large loop over the top limb and slide it down first, then connect the smaller loop to the bottom limb. Also, if you choose to string a bow the way you did in the video, it is best to spread your feet wider apart and put the riser of the bow behind your leg, that way the upper limb can be more easily bent to equal the bend of the bottom limb and less chance of over torquing/twisting the upper limb damaging the bow. Wood grain on that bow riser is nice. Amazing how much quieter it shot when you put on string silencers and fur on limbs. Putting thin pieces of leather on the shelf and riser can quiet down even more.
Thanks so much for Your help! Recently bought the same bow only in the 50 lb. draw weight. Brace height was wrong and I was using a nock point exactly 90 degrees to the arrow rest. Twisted the string as you suggested and arrived at about 7 1/2 inches, and moved the nock point up 1/2 inch. What a difference! Smoother shots, much more accurate and consistent. Thank you again for your help!
Made me smile when you were getting a lot of bull’s-eyes. I’m really happy for you that you like your new bow so much. I have been thinking about getting into archery and you do a good job of putting things in a way that they’re easy to understand. Thank you very much Lily and God bless you.
I'm about to buy the Longbow version of your Bow. This video was part of my decision process and will be very helpful for setting up. You know your stuff and explain things clearly. Thank you for your great videos Lily.
Lilly when using the step through method to string a recurve bow, use your open palm to push your limb to meet the string. If you tightly grip the limb it is easy to torque the limb causing the string to lay outside the groove. That is very dangerous. It could cause the bow to come apart on you. Good shooting gal. Keep it up.
chiefkirk thats a good tip because my dad torqued his bow this was with a compound bow but it can happen with recurves his string came off the cam and cut about half an inch into his arm and in another occasion a guy was shooting a recurve he also torqued the bow and th arrow came off the rest and went clean through his hand so yeah those are some reasons not to torque
Typically, a string will have a bigger loop on top, because you slide it over the limb tip and half way down the limb before stepping through. Place the smaller loop on the low limb tip properly, then when you push on the top limb you slide the top loop up to the tip. Take it off in reverse order, sliding it back down the limb instead of taking it off the top, and you keep the same twist without having to remember how many times you twisted it.
Thanks From Brasil!!! you helped me a lot to understand the basic requirements to adjust my bow, your language is very didactic and its really nice to watch your videos, thanks for everything.
Great shooting Lilly. You can further silence your bow by attaching the fuzzy side of a small piece of velcro to the arrow shelf. I've done this myself, and I'm really happy with it. Learned it from Byron Ferguson & 3 Rivers Archery. Good job with the video and explaining the different aspects of setting up your bow.
I am brand new; haven’t even bought a bow yet as I have to get with someone and figure out my dominant eye/draw arm issue (they’re opposite). But this is an extremely helpful video that cleared up a lot of questions I’ve had. Well done and clearly explained. Thank you so much for posting!
The points of this video are familiar for me but need to say that I like A LOT the way things are explained here. Lot's of beginners will find this useful. Thanks Lilly!
Bought my Grandkids take downs. They are great to shoot but the 1 piece recurves fling the arrows flatter. I had that problem with my damen howatt 60lb hunter. String slap. Using to light of an arrow. Went from 220 grains to 580 grains. No slap. Accurate as all get out. Made my own arrows. Surewood shafts. The beaver balls work great as silencers. Tried the felt or fur on limbs. It was lame and came off. Only fix is the right weight arrow for your bow. Otherwise to light of an arrow is like a dry fire. Hard on your bow.
I recently got myself a decent 54" (40 pound) recurve takedown bow, very similar to the one you're using in this video. I'm definitely a beginner in every sense of the word but I've had so much fun with it so far. I've watched quite a few of your videos and I've learned so much useful information listening to explain things that I otherwise would've never known. Nice Shooting - have you ever tried "walking the String" to help adjust your aim point ? An old guy taught me this trick years ago when I still was Bow Hunting. If you shoot say " Low " consistently after several shots try walking your Knock Point on the string down one finger height or so - this will make the arrow strike higher on your target . Of course walk your finger the other direction for the opposite effect. after some practice you can train yourself in this to adjust for different shooting Distances using this method
Problem is string walking requires a much longer bow. I have an identical bow to this, there are about 10 companies that make the same thing (Sino Art, Top Archery, Galaxy Ember, etc.), and its a great bow to look at, its a great bow to shoot, but string walking on it is basically a non starter IMO unfortunately...
Just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I enjoyed the bow as a very young person in the early 70s. Watching your vids has encouraged me to start shooting again.
My Self Reliance thx for leading by example on the positive comments. I saw your video rant yesterday about respecting women on line. Too many folks were never taught that if they can’t say anything nice, just to keep their mouths shut. Well done.
My Self reliance you are awesome supporting other channels. I have learned so much from you and from Survival Lily. Thank you so much to both of you for all that you do.
@@SurvivalLilly Cool info, I know a Country where hunting with a bow outside of USA or Canada is legal for residence, at least I think it is in Australia or I know it was until the late 1990's when the for Guns all they could use and own is the 22 Win-Mag for max, going to the same as UK without a license to rent a hunting gun.
You are a great archer Lilly!!!And your channel is a good source of information for newbie’s and old archers to understand. Thanks for the videos and don’t change a thing. I wish you great health and happiness for new year!
That’s a quiet bow . Sounded good . 40# is perfect for target shooting imo. No need for shoulder injuries . I’m sore now after 3 weeks of 70# 100 arrows a day but it’s still fun . We re about 60 yards now . Not quite ready for 80 yds yet
I ordered a Black Hunter after I saw your video. Got it in about a month--had to go on the waiting list, I'm glad I went with my gut. It's awesome! Thank you for motivating me. Shoot safely,
Great video and congratulations on your award. Just a suggestion from an old bowman, to increase accuracy (not that you were doing badly in that regard) hold the bow loosely only taking the weight in the place between your thumb and forefinger with the other fingers out front to keep from dropping the bow after the shot. As far as release that has always been something that improves with practice but from what I’ve seen on this video you’re doing that pretty well.
Bows really aren’t that loud and I would only recommend a silencer if you wanted to hunt with it. The only reason silencers are there, is so that animals wont hear the bow.
bought a recurve bow and its 50 pounds. i have been gaining the strength to draw properly and had my first good day at the range, today. thanks for your videos. made some changes to my bow based on your knowledge. Changed my brace height!!!
thank you for your vid...i just got my black hunter and i'm new to archery...been crossbow hunting for whitetail deer in the states 5yrs now and wanted to learn skills in archery...anyway just wanted to say thanks for showing yourself string the bow, ididn't want to buy a stringer so i did it just like you did first time...you're great, thanks
Agree. I wear a back quiver to carry a few dozen arrows but they are tied down. I wear a hip quiver that holds a dozen arrows. I don't carry my back quiver unless I plan to spend an extended time in the deep woods. It is part of my survival pack. 2 takedown hybrid bows and 4 dozen arrows. I have always shot off my knuckle with either hand. My style is very "old school." i do have a hybrid Longbow with an arrow shelf on both sides. Learning to shoot with either hand will train you to keep both eyes open when shooting.
If you're trekking thru the thick woods, you'll find the advantage for the back quiver over the hip quiver. That hip quiver is going to hang up on brush, brambles, and tall grass. The back quiver won't get hung up because its behind you. Hip quivers are best for target shooting. But in a bugout situation, you'll prefer the back quiver. Mine is a back quiver. In addition to holding my arrows (up to 24 with broadheads attached) it also holds my breakdown bow in the breakdown condition, all my shooting accessories, and my Sven saw. There's not a lot of rattle to it either when full of arrows. I pack them six to a tube (four tubes) and there is almost no room for play. They still draw easily from the quiver.
15:05 oh my gosh your laugh is so darn cute!!!! as always enjoyed the video! im considering getting this bow as well now ^_^ the mandarin duck dragonborn quiver is just so gosh darn beautiful too i reallllllly want one!
Now I'm debating on whether to get the Samick Sage or the Black Hunter. I like the options on the Sage and the no allen wrench take down. Your videos are awesome as you explain easily and to the point. I did not know that it was as easy to set the brace height and nock point location. Very Impressive that your first shooting was with no nock installed. !! Also as other replies have said. VERY NOTICABLE NOISE REDUCTION when you added the fur to the limbs and the fur string silencers
I found this video for the first time 2 years ago. I ended up actually ordering a Black Hunter Recurve from Mandarin Duck as my first bow. I still use it these days, amazing starter bow.
You should get a bow stringer. Stringing your bow that way is good in a pinch but a stringer is safer and better for the bow. Good anchor point + practice = good shooting Nice work!!
In the Marines, I used a back quiver because during rapid shooting, it is much easier to grap an arrow after a release unlike having to readjust your shoulder when reaching for an arrow in a hip quiver and then properly trying to place the arrow prior to pull. I preferred the back quiver over the hip quiver in every situation.
great video, I always hated my recurve because of the noise but now after a few modifications it's as quiet as I like. thanks for the info. keep up with the great information videos
i bought the recurve bow from mandarin duck, first the bolt hole was really cheap quality i tried to tighten up the bolt but the whole was stripped , after managing to put in after few tries the upper limb snapped from its place because the bolt wasn't holding it tight, really bad experience now the bolt is trash u cannot use it for nothing but decoration
40 years ago as kids we used to love going into the local woods and making our own bows, haven't done it since and to this day I have her never shot one that was professionally made. After watching your videos I keep getting the urge to purchase a proper takedown bow and go out to play again. LOL. Love your videos Lilly.♥️
You were one of the very first archers to show the Black Hunter recurve/longbow on UA-cam. Now, it’s so popular that a bunch of other UA-camrs are barely featuring this now. This bow is a big deal right now
Yea definitely you need to change the quiver position you do have good form though good shooting Lilly... I shoot mostly compound bows I have a Matthews Z7 Magnum 2012 model I bought new in 2011; and I have a 2012 Hoyt Carbon Element that I bought used almost 2 years ago; neither one was less than a thousand US. I enjoy your videos and your channel thnx. for all your hard work... nice bow good deal. I'll check em out for sure i want to get a re-curve bow...thnx again.
Nice vid Lilly and you are an excellent shot with that bow. I haven't shot a recurve bow since 1982 but definitely want to try again. I checked the Madarin Duck website and they are completely sold out of all left handed recurve bows. I'll try again in Jan. By the way, what kind of fletchings are you using on the arrows? Thanks for sharing your expertise.
I just bought my first recurve bow 50lbs , and a bow stringer. Finally figured out the assembly lol but can’t get the thing strung for the life of me. Afraid I might break it and Definitely wish I had some educated talent like you! Anyhow thx for sharing.
Thank you very much for the great demonstration. Nice set up and shooting! I’m a big fan of straight bows and 40 lbs is just what I prefer - guess I’m gonna buy one!
Aria0WhiteWolf havent seen the reply to my comment at all on this video i was 13 at the time haha but i now have realize no one gets the “first comment” because everyones comments show up at different times showing you did get the first comment but really no one knows
I bought the Phantom bow when you were first sponsored by Mandarin Duck a while ago. Very nice quality bow and for only $80 USD you can't beat that price. Phantom is a great bow for beginners. And I use a 45lb draw which is my current draw limit
I think you should take some of these "chefs" that have all these shows on TV and make them cook at the bug out camp. Gordon Ramsey.....hand him a rabbit and say "COOK!". Make him prepare it/other food types on a campfire

Yes, ^ the decrease in limb tension has a much greater affect on arrow speed than the increase in the "power stroke" of the brace height.

@@SurvivalLilly Hi Lilly👏👏🙋♂️🙋♂️my greetings from Santiago de Chile!!!🇨🇱🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇
My Self reliance you are awesome supporting other channels. I have learned so much from you and from Survival Lily. Thank you so much to both of you for all that you do.
@@SurvivalLilly Cool info, I know a Country where hunting with a bow outside of USA or Canada is legal for residence, at least I think it is in Australia or I know it was until the late 1990's when the for Guns all they could use and own is the 22 Win-Mag for max, going to the same as UK without a license to rent a hunting gun.
This is fantastic information! We could listen to your accent everyday. 😍
16:51 when you get to the top of the stairs and think there's another step
You are a great archer Lilly!!!And your channel is a good source of information for newbie’s and old archers to understand. Thanks for the videos and don’t change a thing. I wish you great health and happiness for new year!
Buying my first bow soon. So glad I found your channel
That’s a quiet bow . Sounded good . 40# is perfect for target shooting imo. No need for shoulder injuries . I’m sore now after 3 weeks of 70# 100 arrows a day but it’s still fun . We re about 60 yards now . Not quite ready for 80 yds yet
Wow That is a beautiful laminated riser!!!
I ordered a Black Hunter after I saw your video. Got it in about a month--had to go on the waiting list, I'm glad I went with my gut. It's awesome! Thank you for motivating me. Shoot safely,
I thought, “What a great price!” But that was 2017 and that price is a bit more now. Thanks for the post.
Rick Croucher Nope. That’s exactly the price I just ordered one for.
$120 US. August 2020.
I just got 2 one for $115 usd in 45# and one for $99 usd in 50# October 2020 from ebay 👍🏾
You can get the same thing made by gonex for 80 usd
Great video and congratulations on your award. Just a suggestion from an old bowman, to increase accuracy (not that you were doing badly in that regard) hold the bow loosely only taking the weight in the place between your thumb and forefinger with the other fingers out front to keep from dropping the bow after the shot. As far as release that has always been something that improves with practice but from what I’ve seen on this video you’re doing that pretty well.
I always thought the fur was for decoration. Never knew it served a function
Same here. I guess it’s a dual purpose lol, looks even better and doesn’t make you go deaf
I like the way she says "cool."
"Ku•rl" 😊
Yes I love how Austrians and Germans say “that’s cool” - “dats kouhl”. 👏😎
thank you for your vid...i just got my black hunter and i'm new to archery...been crossbow hunting for whitetail deer in the states 5yrs now and wanted to learn skills in archery...anyway just wanted to say thanks for showing yourself string the bow, ididn't want to buy a stringer so i did it just like you did first time...you're great, thanks
Try a hip quiver like Chuck Adams uses. Easier to get the arrows out...
Agreed, and also easier to grab to steady and keep quiet when hunting.
im mean your right but that comes to down to preference and I think she is experienced enough to have tried it.
She usually does I believe, but she was provided with the straps for wearing it on the back
They still draw easily from the quiver.
its always such a treat when Lilly posts a new video
15:05 oh my gosh your laugh is so darn cute!!!! as always enjoyed the video! im considering getting this bow as well now ^_^ the mandarin duck dragonborn quiver is just so gosh darn beautiful too i reallllllly want one!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing this process! I just bought this bow (45# @ 28" draw), so this helps alot!
Hi Lilly - Keep doing what you are doing! Your channel is wonderful! 💙
Another great video from my favorite outdoor survivalist....Lilly!
I found this video for the first time 2 years ago. I ended up actually ordering a Black Hunter Recurve from Mandarin Duck as my first bow. I still use it these days, amazing starter bow.
You know this girl is never going to starve. 😎🍻
Finally a decent explanation on why people thread bever fur through their bowstring THANKS
I like how they edited out her drawing arrows from the quiver . Overall great video as I'm expecting my first takedown recurve any day
Very nice! Impressive, a lot cleaner than a compound Bow.
Lilly, Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Awesome skills!
„Right in the middle • Jawoll!“ Wirklich schöner Bogen und erst noch mehr als bezahlbar. Kommt auf die Liste als Anfänger-Recurve!
I just love it when Lilly says "Cool" So charming "(^^,)
As a compound user this is really useful information for me
You should get a bow stringer. Stringing your bow that way is good in a pinch but a stringer is safer and better for the bow.
Good anchor point + practice = good shooting
Nice work!!
That is a beautiful bow
great video, I always hated my recurve because of the noise but now after a few modifications it's as quiet as I like. thanks for the info. keep up with the great information videos
Coool video lilly!!!!!!!
Just come across your video. Thanks for the effort you put into doing it. I'm just about to buy one.
i bought the recurve bow from mandarin duck, first the bolt hole was really cheap quality i tried to tighten up the bolt but the whole was stripped , after managing to put in after few tries the upper limb snapped from its place because the bolt wasn't holding it tight, really bad experience now the bolt is trash u cannot use it for nothing but decoration
40 years ago as kids we used to love going into the local woods and making our own bows, haven't done it since and to this day I have her never shot one that was professionally made. After watching your videos I keep getting the urge to purchase a proper takedown bow and go out to play again. LOL. Love your videos Lilly.♥️
she split Robin's arrow in TWAIN!!!!
He gets another shot!!!
😂 luv it..lilly ur awsome...
Lil john "i can't swim" lol
😂😂🤣🤣💯
Very useful video. I learned to stop the vibration of string and Bow. Thanks for your tips
When hunting its the first shot that counts.
wouldn't the deer jump before the arrow hit it from the noise, they have serious reaction time
mr face that’s what the silencers are for.
@@ZSmith-yy4lv ahh they dampen the noise a little bit but deer still react to the sound
mr face trust me, silencers work. Combined with a pretty high draw weight, the deer won’t react in time.
You were one of the very first archers to show the Black Hunter recurve/longbow on UA-cam. Now, it’s so popular that a bunch of other UA-camrs are barely featuring this now. This bow is a big deal right now
1:09 or as the professionals do, in their violin cases.
How many bows do you have? YOU SHOULD DO A VIDEO ABOUT YOUR BOWS.
I love watching you shoot & your reactions to the shots. Lots of good info in this wideo - thanks Lilly!
Just as an FYI, if you release the string with your right hand, you're a right handed shooter, FYI. So you'd need a right handed bow.
Thanks Feint. I wasn't sure since I draw with my right hand and hold the bow with my left, so I assumed I needed a left handed bow.
William Logan I wasn't sure either so I looked it up on here and found a video explaining the difference.
ebay has the black hunter from $103.99 on up with free shipping.
I am learning so much from each of your videos Lilly, thank you 🙋🏻♂️
Giving me some tips...Going be buying my 1st bow...just doing some more Homework
I just bought my first recurve bow 50lbs , and a bow stringer. Finally figured out the assembly lol but can’t get the thing strung for the life of me. Afraid I might break it and Definitely wish I had some educated talent like you! Anyhow thx for sharing.
Lilly try breathing out when you're shooting it helps you keep your arms still love the video!
Thank you very much for the great demonstration. Nice set up and shooting!
I’m a big fan of straight bows and 40 lbs is just what I prefer - guess I’m gonna buy one!
"Split an arrow" Is it the same s Hole in One? :-)
Best archery videos out in UA-cam. Great form and simple explanations. Thank you 😊
First comment! Love your videos Lilly congrats on your award!😊
KidRebel13 not first but close
How do you manage to reply a comment 8 minutes faster than the comment was posted :D
Aria0WhiteWolf havent seen the reply to my comment at all on this video i was 13 at the time haha but i now have realize no one gets the “first comment” because everyones comments show up at different times showing you did get the first comment but really no one knows
Just ordered my bow..... can't wait..... I hope my shoulder injury doesn't cause trouble. Broke it in 2 places last summer.....
"Hi my name is Lilly and today I want to show you how you can set up a new bow. Stay tuned"
I see what you did there! haha nice pun :D
I bought the Phantom bow when you were first sponsored by Mandarin Duck a while ago. Very nice quality bow and for only $80 USD you can't beat that price. Phantom is a great bow for beginners. And I use a 45lb draw which is my current draw limit
Awesome
Awesome video. Please do a video showing all of your current bows and discuss pro and cons. Thank you
I think you should take some of these "chefs" that have all these shows on TV and make them cook at the bug out camp. Gordon Ramsey.....hand him a rabbit and say "COOK!". Make him prepare it/other food types on a campfire
Sabrecat Smiladon lol great idea
I love your videos. For someone just getting into archery like myself they are a god send. Thank you.
Robinhood strikes again. Now I've seen you split an arrow twice! You're getting pretty good at it. When will you take a deer with a bow Lilly?
Great job girl . My favorite bush tool .. i bring it every trip out in woods . Always brings a smile .
You don't seem so excited as you used to. :)
Thank you for everything you do. I've learned so much from you to begin my own journey in archery and survival. You're badass!!
I don’t think you’d get away with selling anything called a “black hunter” in the US lol
Hamez sb
Thank you for your moronic road kill eating post.
I am black man and have been shooting long bows, recurve bows and cross bows starting in 1958. I've handbuild thousands of arrows by hand and taught the Boy Scouts of Americia archery. I still shoot four or five times a week using a Bear Grizzly recurve at 50# @ 28", and hand built arrows at 72.
The title Black Hunter is who I am, and yes you are a Biopsychosocial failure and a moron.
@@toxophilite6804 You are the most insecure person ive ever seen embaress themselves in a youtube comment LMAO.
It was a simple joke making fun of how you americans take words so literaly, so thanks for just proving my point.
By the way you can't say you "Hand build arrows by hand" then proceed to call anyone else a moron, it's self contradicting considering level of literacy you possess.
ALSO i just realized these "BLACK HUNTER" bows do sell in the US. They are really big in Alabama, Texas, Louisianna and everywhere in the south! theres a big archery club that uses them going by KKK or something, i dunno.
@@toxophilite6804 Also you clearly don't shoot bow's if you need instructions on how to do so. And you dont "hand build arrowS" you fletch them. you'd know that if you weren't an insecure lying piece of dooky
Hamez sb it’s sad to see jokes fly over people’s heads
