Custom labels are literally EVERYTHING! If it's for the PC then I care more about that label than the difference between a 9.4/9.6 basically...
That is what literally all the others are lacking in...PSA is horrendous, and CBCS have nicer slabs and more cred than CGC but the labels are BLAH...

Because of your videos about EGS, I've been sending them books to grade. I love the way they look (the custom labels are awesome!) and how nicely they display and I think, if anything, their grading is harsher than the other guys, which I think results in a more accurate grade. I only wish their turn around time was a little quicker. But, hey, you can't have everything...where would you put it?

Slabs look great. The only issue I have with the smaller grading companies is that if something happened to the owner, the company would cease to exist. Seems risky to send high dollar books. With cgc and cbcs the company is not based on one person and will continue to exist.

For small books like these it is what it is. You would be taking a massive loss if you graded big keys, like massive. This grading service is behind PGX at best and always will be.
@@Comicbookyoutubersrock actually you wouldn’t any loss at all, you would only be taking a smaller gain. Buying a raw book and getting it graded and selling it for even a dollar more is a not a loss, but a gain. No one is making statements that at the current time EGS slabs will demand a higher slabbed value, but they will still add a premium from what you paid for it raw.

@@Comicbookyoutubersrock lol it's not a loss my guy. It's a ratio differential between gains, once sold. Taking a loss means you sell something for LESS that what you pay. Just because you would get less for selling the same book in an EGS slab next to a CGC slab doesn't mean it's a LOSS. It's simply a "smaller gain."
Secondly, do you see me grading a $5k or $50k dollar book with EGS? No. And I don't need to. EGS isn't CGC, and they don't need to be, just like Honda doesn't need to be Ferarri.
Again though, please brush up on the language of business and Finance. Because your understanding of taking a "loss" is incorrect.
Nah, don't think the other guys will get the respect Jerno. CGC grades tough. The value is there because of it. The boat has mostly sailed on grading companies. Reselling non CGC you just won't usually get the price you want. Not normally. Sometimes yes. But not normally. Not great advice. CGC issues won't sway it
I don't know what advice you think isn't "great" advice. Did I tell people to use another company and that they would get the same resale value as CGC? No. I used EGS because that's what I, MYSELF, chose to do. On the ones I am selling, I know I won't get as much as a CGC slab, but I don't care. I will still make a profit.
Secondly, CGC doesn't grade tough. Not counting PGX, CGC is the most lenient when it comes to grading. EGS and CBCS are much more tougher and much more strict. The value that CGG commands has nothing to do with 'how' they grade.
Lastly, the boat has NOT saled for other grading companies, for a multitude of reasons. One, because grading is still in its infancy. If the boat had sailed, PSA wouldn't have jumped into the market. Secondly, with all of the issues that continue to plague CGC, public perception is finally starting to backfire on them for a large population of consumers.
As I've said to many other people, EGS doesn't need to 'BE" CGC. You and so many others act like there can only be one ruling the entire industry. Honda doesn't need to be Ferarri. They both co-exist and make money. EGS has proven themselves to be a company that can exist in the grading industry and turn a profit, and that's all they need to do. Period.

You had a much different experience than I did. I just got 12 books back. They were crooked and bowed inside, the labels were crooked, the lines look sloppy, it was an awful experience and I will never use EGS again.
Not to mention the suspicion that multiple books were damaged in the process.

So far im liking the egs slabs but for me I think the black label with black book (venom 4) or the red label on the 300 ams facsimile red background blends everything in & seems a bit much. I think I prefer the regular labels better. I do like how the graders notes come on a physical certificate.
Remember, they have standard blue certified labels as well.

Label looks cool, BUT more than once you had to slap them to shift the book and that is going to cause damage especially for shipping and traveling with them to shows.
Actually, the couple times I did that was to see of the book would shift and they didn’t. Also, the inner well in these slabs will never allow the book to hit a corner in the slab, even if it moved a little (again, which these didn’t). CGC books have had a lot of movement that is visible. Some of my early EGS slabs have slight movement like that, still though, sitting in an inner well that protects them still, but these books didn’t budge.

Nothing EGS is fire in SC. You cant give those, PGX, or CBCS away in my area. People flat out will not buy them here. Doesn't matter what the price is, they don't even want to look at them if you mention EGS, PGX, or CBCS

If you ever sell those someone will probably crack those open and submit it to CGC. Just saying
I humbly disagree, outside of maybe the Wolverine 10. Why? Because all of the other books can be bought at cover price. Anyone really looking just to get these books CGC'd will just buy them raw.
The whole concept of color-coding the labels is to make it easy to identify between standard, signed, qualified, restored, and provenanced books -regardless of the third party grader.
Allowing custom label colors diminishes that convenience, and defeats the purpose of certification. EGS could have provided for customization within boundaries that preserve the color-coded Grading Certifications, but they haven't because they aren't capable of discerning inauthentic signatures and probably have passed books with amateur restoration without even realizing it. Their font selection is unimaginative and the kerning is awkward which makes their labels look amateur. Their chosen hues are garish and reminiscent of 99 cent store party goods. The back of the label wastes space on a giant advertisement for their website when that space could have been dedicated to grading notes. A certificate of authenticity is superfluous because if you can't trust the brand on the label inside the slab, you definitely can't trust a separate piece of paper -which is inherently inconvenient.
Are the top labels still a sticker? That's like four generations of slabs ago for CGC and CBCS. The thinner, sturdier CBCS slabs are the future of the hobby. I expect PSA's slabs to be similar and I've already heard that CGC are exploring a similar but proprietary design to maximize storage space.
I'm all for more competition in the slab game. I even purchased a quantity of the same re-openable slabs that EGS started out with (wouldn't do that again!) back in the day, but if I'm going to knowingly take a hit on resale value the product has to be better than what's already out there. But even now EGS are like five years behind the tech at even PGX and they have a poor design aesthetic. I've seen dealers with bins of EGS books at conventions and you can practically see the tumbleweeds blowing past them; NOBODY buys them. Not even at a considerable discount. Heritage doesn't sell their slabs, which handicaps them in the resale market. Raw books sell for more than graded, slabbed, EGS comics.
Lately CBCS has done a pretty good job of capitalizing on CGC's recent flubs, and PSA is now in the game. I think it's time to recognize EGS as a failed experiment that we can learn from. As is, they are a terrible investment. You are better off keeping your comics ungraded than paying for their grade on that EGS label and wasting good money after bad on the back and forth shipping cost.
Okay... where to begin. First off, you know I have nothing but respect for you, and I truly do appreciate the detailed opinion you shared. But, I'm going to go in on you. While I agree with some of your points simply in regards to resale, your paragraph where you sh!t all over EGS by making sure you show off your large vocabulary is pompus and almost childish. Your inability to see any positives while only stating exaggerative negatives proves that your overall argument was formed from an emotional bias, rather than logic or fact.
A "failed experiment?" If that's the case, why are you the only one out of dozens of comments on this video saying anything negative at all? Why are they still in business in the green? Come on, man. You're a "journalist" and you came into this argument with your undies riding up your backside. You brought a knife to a gun fight. Your emotional response is merely conjecture used in a way to sensationalize the emotion put into your words when people read it. There's no weight.
What do you know about EGS for you to insinuate all of these accusations? How they would allow restoration to pass? Inability to verify signatures? What hard evidence do you have? What research do you have to where you can credibly deduce these "findings?" You can't.
And being so fixated on "convenience" of the color coding; you sound like a Karen, or one of those 16yo girls that get a Lambo for their birthday and throw a fit because it was black and not red. Yes, the color coordination is great, but throwing the information on the label without the color coordination does not in any way defeat any purpose or devalue the certification of the grade. PEOPLE CAN SIMPLY READ.
Some of their labels aren't for me, and yes, EGS has evolved and will continue to evolve with their designs. But again, speak for yourself, and look at all the feedback in the comments here.
EGS has been around for about 5 years now, and they've only been solidified with their proprietary cases for about 1 year, and they continue to grow. They don't need to be CGC or CBCS. They are EGS. Honda doesn't compete with Ferrari. But they can co-exist within the same industry to serve different purposes.
Lastly, the fact that you are insinuating that there is no validity to the certification of the comics incapsulated by EGS while CGC's grades and integrity are literally worthless because they don't know how to slab a book without damaging it, or because I get 9.8s that have 8 color breaking spine ticks, is absolutely asinine. I trust EGS to grade every book they see with a standard and consistency that I can trust. Can't say that anymore about CGC, but, that leads us to the one point where I agree with you; go get your money by paying a company that knows they can run an unethical operation and still own the market. Fine by me.
I'd be willing to entertain any evidence you may have to back up all of the accusations you brought forth today. Other than that, it's simply an opinion, based on very little logic or fact, and mostly on personal bias and emotion.
@@JernosComicsPopCultureTony of EGS stated in an interview that his qualification for grading and authenticating signatures is a 30 hour class he took. And since he's the only grader named on his own website, and there have been no press releases issued about him hiring a specific authenticator or known industry professional from an established signature verification service, that gives a pretty clear picture of the qualifications involved. I have no problem using that tidbit alone to cast doubt on Tony's ability to recognize errors that occasionally get past much more seasoned graders. I'm sure that other services have had to rush-train graders, too, but they are still supervised by known professionals who helped establish the grading rules we all take for granted. How do we know? Because those other entities routinely issue press releases about it.
Balking at the consistency of label colors as indicators of certification is out of step with the overwhelming opinion within the hobby, but even more so with the investor class. And let's face it: that's who slabs are for. I don't see how pointing out such an obvious detail warrants insults.
As for a "big vocabulary," I think the largest word in that comment was "superfluous," which isn't a particularly fancy or unusual word, but if you think so that seems less like proof of pompous intent in the original commenter and more like proof of vocabulary limitations in the respondent.
Look, when Sticky accused you of being an EGS shill, I defended you because I've seen you critique them in the past. And if these slabs give you joy, I don't want to rain on your parade. Furthermore I am way more vocally critical of CGC than I could ever be of EGS. But I would be remiss to fail to inform the public that an EGS graded book has been deemed less desirable within the hobby by an overwhelming consensus. And that has reflected in much greater devaluation from FMV than any of the other three better-known 3rd party graders. And that's soon to be 4 when PSA graded books start to appear.
That is a stone cold fact.
I have no emotions connected to this, but there are basic rules of design and systems of measure by which to compare choices of hue, font, spacing, readability, and other criteria, and those EGS labels would fail a first term design class. I was critical of CBCS's old labels, but even those flaunted fewer design standards.
You called EGS a "profitable" company. They might be, but where's the evidence of this? I've never seen a public posting of their finances, have you? So I guess that would be an assumption, too. I know they got stuck with thousands of resealable comic skin slabs from before their transition over to sealed slabs; Tony has publicly discussed it and that's by definition a massive, unrecoverable loss. Is it possible that the company makes money? Sure, but I don't see a longterm sustainability when they purposely work against marketing and presentation standards and have no auction presence of note.
Recognizing some very noncontroversial shortcomings about EGS doesn't mean I like CGC, it just means that I know the markets, and the latter has established a top dog position in spite of their own very obvious flaws. For an underdog to succeed they have to be undisputably the best, and EGS isn't in the win, place, or even show positions in this competition.
And for the record, I have never received sponsorship nor free goods from any of these industry cabals -not from CGC, CBCS, PGX, PSA, KeyCollector, Whatnot, nor EGS.
