- The Game Nerdz "investigation team" tracked down some examples of counterfeit board games to bring attention to the problem. We show off four examples, explain how counterfeiting happens, and tell you how to avoid accidentally purchasing a counterfeit board game.

Not gonna lie, I would like a small version of Splendor, to carry around when travelling, but not with those paper chips. LOL

Use colored metal coins. That would be compact but also give you the feel of the real version
The worst part is that Amazon has continued to comingle products, so counterfeits keep getting into their supply chain, even after partnering with Asmodee to try to reduce counterfeits.
Also, the Root counterfeit sold in China is amusing. Leder Games showed off a copy that they found, and they went with their own art style for the board and the meeples.

The convenience from services like Amazon can typically outweigh the negatives. Unfortunately this isn't one of those cases. 😔
As info regarding Deep Sea Adventure, when looking this up on your website, you have a picture of the counterfeit box as the product image.

Some counterfeits are coming directly from the factories where the real product is made. Once the factory has fulfilled the order from the client, there's nothing stopping them making more copies with cheaper materials and selling them themselves. It's too easy to pull off since they don't have to do any extra work for manufacturing as they already have all of the files from the client.

Wow, my copy of Deep Sea Adventure is Coutetfit, and I had no idea! I looked at my copy to make my guess as to which one was fake, and I guessed wrong. I bought it used and didn't think anything of it. It did always bother me that the dice were off center. I guess that should have topped me off.
Mine, too! Luckily, I just bought it from AMAZON a couple week's ago and can return it today.
Yeah they can be tough to mistake if you don't have an authentic copy to compare it to. We're happy and sad that this video helped to bring that to light 😅

Wow, hadn't even considered the concept of counterfeit games. Thanks for the heads up with this video. I prefer my FLGS to Amazon anyway but is good to be aware in the event of buying used games.

I bought a "model set" of the Anachrony suits, about 24-30? It came (with tracking from Shanghai) in a cheap insert with no box in a bubblewrap envelope. It was clear they ran the production line longer than claimed and sold the items bypassing the owner. The insert was damaged and I entered a complaint. My money was returned. :) So I tried again with a different game product/company, just the same profile of a seller. And again with coin capsules. All free. I don't buy from them anymore, but I landed my blow.
That "pizza" box made me worry that my copy of Risk Legacy was counterfeit! Thankfully BGG images confirmed that's how the box was designed. I had a similar scare earlier this year when I read some threads on BGG that made me worry I'd bought counterfeits of Pandemic Legacy Season 1 and Season 2. Fortunately, my copies are legitimate.
There's so much wasted space in the normal Splendor box though, I'd be tempted to get the compact version to see if I could get the standard to fit in the smaller box anyway.
Hopefully one day Space Cowboys will hear the cries of the community and make us a pocket size 👀
They should make it like splendor duel. That box is perfect size.
I moved Splendor to the King of Tokyo Power Up expansion box. Then I just printed the app's icon and logo and glued in it to the box

I ha e heard of cases where a counterfeit game is sold before the actual one even releases.
Unfortunately the counterfeiters can find leaked assets and get to work pretty quickly. Stay vigilant out there!

The last couple of games I bought, I went directly to the manufacturer (Devir and Portal, in these cases). The prices were better and there was no question about the authenticity.
Plus the manufacturer was making _much_ more off of the games, since they were selling at retail, not 40% of retail.
You can always sleep well knowing your getting the real deal! We buy from distributors who have rock solid relationships with the publishers and manufactures, so rest assured that Game Nerdz has you covered as well!
i like the cheap ones for no worry not ptotect gamming sessions for games i dont feel like colecting since most games i colect cost tons to protect and sleeve so havinga few uno's and such cheap clones to wear and tear are usefull

I have a counterfeit Clank! The board game that I purchased from Walmart. Almost looks legit till you see glossy board, off-color rules and cards.
I also have fake splendor terrible insert off center stickers on chips and, off colored cards and tiles.

i would not feel any guilt buying a KDM counterfeit if there exist one.
If any KDM game is worth playing, we recommend supporting the ones who are responsible for designing & publishing them. To each their own though.
I ordered Terraforming Mars on eBay and it proved to be fake. I do not buy games online anymore.
This is the second instance of hearing about Terraforming Mars fakes floating around eBay. If you ever decide to come back to shopping for games online, be sure to look us up. 😉

Doubtful. Especially since youre unlikely to be intentionally seeking out fakes, or buying in large quantities to sell them. You might get into trouble if you have an EBay store stocked conpletely with fakes, and you don't stop when the company tells you to.
The best practice is to avoid counterfeit products at all costs. Better safe than sorry!
I had no idea this was an issue! Maybe I have a few counterfeit games and I don't know it. There have been a couple that have been poorer quality. I guess if it makes money, it's counterfeited... Thanks for the heads up! Stardew Valley was VERY poor quality. The chits tore during the punch. Didn't buy it from Amazon though, but most likely from a place that buys counterfeits. "They could be funding the Death Star." 🤣🤣
Stardew Valley was made in America. That's why it's poor quality (relatively speaking).

Were the low priced Catan 3d and 3d expansion on Amazon legit?
We can't speak into what is and isn't authentic on any items that we don't handle. Thankfully, all items ordered through gamenerdz.com are packed and inspected by our amazing warehouse staff!
The thing here is, these counterfeits are still completely playable. It's like caring more about the gameplay than the graphics in video games. Not that I'm supporting these things. But a $5 copy vs a $30 legit one with essentially the same experience attracts customers especially to those who don't earn much like people in other countries.
The main issue is that these counterfeits are asset theft. If the game is enjoyable enough to play, it's our hope that people show that appreciation by supporting the ones that designed and published it.
When they sell at very low price, at least I know what I’m getting into. What I’m worried about is that these counterfeit games get on Amazon or some other platforms and sell for the price of a legit game.
We can only hope that creating awareness around the subject will spark more intense authenticity measures!
OK. But that is like buying something out of a truck that you know has been stolen, isn't it? That is ripping off the people who spent years developing and testing and redeveloping a good game. To me it's the same as buying stolen property because you can get it cheap.
@joeurban3724 What I meant is that these stolen and cheaply-made products got on apparently legit platforms and sold at the price of a legit game. You spend 30 to 40ish dollars to get tickets to ride on Amazon. You thought you were getting the legit version of the game, but instead, you got the crappy one shown in the video. Yet you don't know about it because you don't have a legit copy to compare it with.
Temu looks like the new Ali Express... Less quality than the original boardgames.
There are some really fun and interesting items on Temu but if the price is too good to be true, it probably is!
I think one of the people's mics was not on. I could hear them faintly talking in the background and it seemed like the people on mic we're speaking to them but they were inaudible. My recommendation is that if you have anyone partaking in the conversation they should be on a mic. Otherwise, they should not be included in the conversation because it is very hard for the listener to only hear half the conversation.

Bootleg boardgames has allowed me to experience so many boardgames that I would have never spent that ridiculous amount of money for.
2 authentic boardgames could probably buy me 10 bootlegs just to experience the different types of game mechanics of 10 different games.
It is quite obvious to me and all other buyers that we are purchasing bootlegs due to the low cost, and hence we are not expecting quality material etc.
For myself, I am merely paying a low price to have an experience with the boardgame(which I will never pay so much for).
Most importantly, there are some board games which are very costly, in fact more expensive than the typical boardgame prices.
And I have played bootlegs of them so that I can have the experience of playing boardgames i would never have access to.
As long as there are counterfeit products being made, they will always be an option. But our stance is that if the game is enjoyable enough to play, people should directly support the ones that designed and published them.
